Are full screen pop over ads going forward the new norm on xda? If so i guess we just have to live w/ it, but ads like this are incredibly annoying...
Happened to me the first time I logged in today but thats it.
I've gotten it on my phone and on my computer the last few days...
Are you talking about accessing xda on a laptop or on a phone's browser/app? Its happened to me viewing the web version from my phone. Really annoying.

I have seen this on so many tech sites lately. I am just doing the nasty thing and using ad-block for chrome. I wouldn't use it if the ads weren't as intrusive but these are just silly.
You are using chrome.. is there no AdBlock-Addon??
Never seen that
// this message is nonsense 5/8. I need to get "search in thread".

All the forum sites are using pop up ads, flash, etc. these days, and it freezes the browser momentarily at times.
That's why I use Tapatalk-based Android apps like this one.
Too bad I can't see all the fancy signature blocks, etc. but I can see & reply to messages quickly.

It just annoys me when I am reading xda on my computer, I understand why they do it, I still don't like it.

We are not choosing to put pop-over ads on XDA. If you see them, please screenshot them and send it to "svetius".
Full screen ads on my Gingerbread Nook Color are a total fail! I usually don't mind ads, but this is going too far.

Please read my post above. We hate these too, but we need a screenshot to know what you are seeing. Else how can we get rid of it?

Yeah, this totally sucks, and could be a reason for me to not visit XDA. When I'm viewing this on a phone, it's ridiculously tedious to close the damn thing down on a small screen.
Ever since I got my phone, I started getting spam such as "you've won a $500 card to Best Buy, just answer a few questions" daily. These appears in my drop down list and not SMS/messaging.
What can I do?
Its called air push. There is a permanent opt out apparently in the market, but it has mixed results. For me it doesn't work for my brown it does
Not my brown, my bro damn auto correct
Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk
Kkg is correct. Not sire if it comes included in the phone but from my experiences it happens after you install certain apps that include it.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk
actually there is a newer SPAM bot system than air push, just last week i installed a new game and it came loaded with it, good thing is, all i had to do was uninstall that game to remove it
annoying as hell, sorry forgot the name of that game, it was some shoot them up game, just don't remember the tittle
just today i found yet another one, this one was caught by the antivirus software when i tried to install a fake temple run
Run the airpush detector and download an antivirus app. Its probably one of your apps. What did you download as soon as you got the phone? Was there something free or did you get one online with your cpu and install with the cord? You can fix this easily. If it really is something that came with your phone rooting and flashing should get the job done. I have gotten 2 weird messages but they originated from tmobile. Some attempt at raising revenues.

there is a app that will tell you what app is causing it airpush detector i think is what its called
I have gotten that spam crap when i open my browser
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
I would definitely check through your apps and delete the ones that look "shady" to you. I can usually tell if a app looks shady or not just by the app itself, but it is sometimes hard to distinguish. Also, running a anti-virus app mentioned by the posts above me will help in flushing out suspicious looking apps.
Its an app. It happened to me with free mp3 downloads app lol

Some GOSMS themes now come with this. Sad ****ers have got to go.
If you install Lookout's Push Ad Detector and run it you'll know which apps you have installed have these ads. It'll also direct you to the way to opt-out if you can or you can uninstall the app.
Link to app --> https://market.android.com/details?id=com.lookout.addetector
the opt out never works, is best to just uninstall the App/Game and give them bad reviews
The application stated above works great! I had been getting the green plus signs in my status bar that say I won something or free best buy gift cards etc... I found out that it was caused by Go sms themes, like the black& white theme and purple theme specifically. I hated getting these adds. It made me feel like my phone was unsafe. Do virus apps really do much, or do they just take up room? Thanks for the application and any more info! David

there is a fake ICS them for Go Launcher EX that also comes pre-loaded with SPAM bot
Thanks, it found MySettings. We will see in a day or so what happens.

Cmon ads help pay for the game. Support the dev.
most ad blockers like adfree or ad away will block all ads.

Yeah, adds help the devs. I still use a firewall cuz lots of apps abuse their Network permissions to send sensitive information without user consent (it doesn't matter if they explicitly say its anonymous, if they got an I'd for your phone, then its not anonymous at all).
I'd rather directly buy a premium app than having information about usage being sent over the Network without privacy or Security being warranted.

i love it
I'm rooted. I run AdFree. Everything is up to date.
My gf installed an app then delete it. Not sure which app. Now every time I restart the phone I get the "Android is updating...." message before it boots. But the part that really gets me......
I'm now getting ad banners even in paid apps. I see ads even in paid versions of ROM Manager. (Yes the ads are turned off in the settings.)
This is really frustrating me. Does anyone have any suggestions other than a factory reset?? The ads all say they are AdMob ads by Google.

Addons detector then look for push ads. Top button after scan. Had a similar issue. Hope that helps

Try adaway it downs multiple host lists and merges them together. Works well for me basically all in game and browser ads are block.

Thanks guys. Neither one of those detected anything. Yet - the problems persists.

Can you reflash the ROM, and restore?

Not at the moment. Won't be home for a few more days.
It's very frustrating. They aren't normal ads.

Here is a good ad blocker for ROOTED phones that works on most GS4 roms.

Hit the Thanks button if this is of help to you.
GS4 running Liquid Smooth at the moment
For reference, this was the adblocker that was on the ROM Toolbox.
Google has already removed 99% of ad blockers on the Google Play Store and we got lucky they didn’t notice ROM Toolbox. We have since then removed Ad blocker from the main screen on ROM Toolbox.

their official reason was that if affected other app developers revenue from their ad supported apps, which is true. But the bigger more then likely real reason is because it messed with googles ad revenue. either way its not that hard to install a ad blocker anyway. just install a third party market (i use f-droid) and install adaway.
the reason jrummy removed the adblocking feature of rom toolbox is because if he didnt, the whole app would of been removed from the playstore. In turn, the posted app in the op is useless, its no longer maintained which means it wont block ads anymore (or will just block old ads, which is pretty much pointless)
you can download the ad block zip from goldeneye roms and pull out the hosts file and put it in system > etc
