With my Nokia E65 running apps (Opera Mini, IM software) it will turn on (and off) wifi/gps when needed, so that it's done automatically in the background without having to turn on the wifi function just to open a website.
Is this possible on Android/HTC Desire? I keep having to turn wifi on then off for using an app, why isn't this handled automatically on a need-to-use basis by the app/os itself?
Some apps can enable wifi, its not the desires fault, that the devs of the particular apps your talking about, hasnt bothered to include that feature....

and i dare say apps cant auto activate gps as a security feature, so no1 can gain your geo position without your permission

I thought some would, but even the built-in browser doesn't for me. Maybe I'm doing something wrong.
Gameloft games ask and can turn the wifi on without you needing to exit the app

Folks,
Just wondering if anyone has any experience with automatic WiFi switching apps? Basically after something that works on the desire with froyo. What I want it to do is poll the available WiFi networks every so often (say hourly) to see if my home network is avaiable, and connect if it is.
What do the demon hordes of xda suggest to try, or avoid?

Tasker is a app that can do that, and much more.

On there site you can download it, try it for a week and if you like it buy it. It's a rater expensive app but it has a lot of possibilities. There is also a market version but that has no trial.

Thanks for the tip, I'll look into it. Do you use this? If so, what for? Looks like there's tonnes of ability that I don't think I'd use.
Any other auto WiFi experience out there?

Yeah it's true that for only wifi on at home it's a expensive app but i don't know any other ones.
And yes I use it, for now i have:
Wifi at home
Flight mode on, auto sync off and low brightens at night
5 minutes before my alarm goes off i turn flight mode off, brightness to auto again, wifi on and autosync back on
GPS turns on when opening maps or navigation
When there is a appointment in my school calendar my phone goes on vibrate during that time
When i open my terminal emulator it prompts the keyboard input method
This is after two weeks of using the app and there are a lot more possibility, they also have a wiki with example apps and some tutorials you can look at.
Y5 battery will do it for your home network, on market.

I thought the Desire automatically does this with no 3rd party apps? All the OP is saying that they want to connect to a WiFi connection when it's available (as opposed to performing some action).
Or did I miss something??

I suspect that the OP wants an app that switches off WiFi, and only switches it on again when in range of a "known" WiFi network.
This is essentially what Y5 does - it only works if you have a cellular signal at that location, and basically when the WiFi network connection is lost it looks at the cell id and if it has changed turns WiFi off. When you get back into range of that cell again, it will switch WiFi back on again.

Hey Guys,
Any programs that'll toggle the WiFi on or off based on my location (e.g, save my work location in the program so that it knows to turn on WiFi when I get to work).
Search for "locale", by "two forty four" in the market. It's a paid app, but do many other things beyond that.... you can automatically set almost everything based in location...

At $10, I'd like to see other opinions on the Locale app. Anyone here use it?
Yes, look for home wifi, it does just that.
Very simple to use.

Juice defender can control wifi usage based on location. Also uses mobile signal to pinpoint location instead of gps so saves your battery too!!
So after two long years of using, what I can only describe as the most stable phone I've ever used, I've upgraded to a galaxy s3.
My 2 daughters generally fight over who can use the iPod to watch BBC iPlayer when they goto bed at night, or when they're bored during the day..
I now have a phone sitting in a drawer and it got me thinking If there is any way I can give my desire a new lease of life and give it to my daughter to use for accessing the BBC website? That way one can watch on the iPad, the other on the desire.
I'm only concerned about them using the phone to call the emergency services by accident. Is there anyway I can disable the phone for making calls an still keep the wireless/functionality the same ?
Any comments appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Maybe you can hide call/dialer button from the app drawer (try apps like audio manager-you can lock/hide anything with this app. Also you can remove dialer icon from home screen
And just try searching on market there must be a way to disable it with some app
Also our good friend Google can always help you good luck

Airplane Mode Wifi Tool on Playstore is another alternative. Enables wifi on airplane mode.
via xda app
Any tips/tricks/tweaks (for stock OneX with Tegra3) more than much appreciated... Even just toggling to homescreen to check something closes the app, when you come back it restarts, if it is a web session (does not matter whatever browser it is) and you were logged in somewhere, you have to log on again, needless to say you loose your stuff data/text you left there before switching.
Although i like OneX too much, i am seriously thinking about leaving htc for ever due to that and also because of the Wi-fi policy issue in my beloved OneX, it is also similar. After screen off then on, you find wi-fi went sleep and trying to reconnect, if you are/were sharing media streaming through dlna, it stops as soon as wifi goes sleep. Also the remote apps are becoming useless due to same as you need to re-establish connection each time you wake your phone.
The only manufacturer/device in Android world which deserves to go after OneX is SONY imho, especially the latest Z is seemed a super phone.

You can get WiFi to connect by either switching off the option in power saving mode, or in advanced WiFi settings.
Sent from my faster than SGS3 HOX.
U cant do that in stock ROM.atleast in non rooted devices. If u root and install a custom ROM then its possible.U can adjust the way multitasking is done in some ROM.ViperX JB is released so do give it a thought. Its the best ROM out there.

I just disabled the app as I got annoyed by the notifications but I never really had the app actually turn off / on WiFi. Wondering if anyone is actually using it and can comment on its usefulness
I used to use Smart WiFi ( paid ) but stop using it because it stopped working properly and dev is stagnant

I disabled this also but have also wondered if there was any functionality it provided.
i used it very briefly when I first got the phone and I didnt find it useful at all. I disabled it, as well.
Among other features, it's supposed to help you connect to AT&T hotspots around your area but I found that while it did connect to the wifi hotspot, half the time, my data wouldn't work (no notifications, emails wont send/receive....)
