[q] flashing cm7!? - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

when flashing the build for cm7 could i do it using ClockWork Mod v2.5.1.2 or is there a special recovery i need to flash before trying to put cm7
reason i ask is because on the MT4G you need to flash recovery to v3.0.0.0+ before flashing cm7 build
if someone could please responf on this thread or pm me would be awesome!
Thank You

pretty sure you can just flash it the regular way.. wouldn't see why not as the gingerbread roms are flashed through the regular cwm also

my next question, i tried rooting the phone using the unrevoked program but after it tries running the root it come with an error
"ERROR:Failed to get root. Is your Firmware too new?"
does anyone know anything about this?

well sounds like you already have the latest Clockwork installed? if so, I believe UnRevoked comes with a downgraded version so I would try and downgrade the version on your phone see if it helps

Well I'm able to go into recovery it's just when I try and use rom manager or titanium backup it comes up saying the phone doesn't have root privileges so I thought it wasnt rooted properly. If I'm rooted because I can go into recovery and it shows s= off in h boot then how do I fix the privileges part of it all?

This happened to me after I used unrevoked. It ran successfully, I tested w/ rom manager and it worked. I then rebooted a few minutes later and tried using several other root apps and none could obtain root privelages. So, I flashed a custom ROM (cyanogen 6.1) then had full root access again. Maybe that will help?

You can just get the rooted version of it on this site if you do the ota you will lose root and so far there is no way to get it back yet .

Why install the OTA when there are complete ROMS here that are better than what you're gonna have with stock 2.3.3???

It is possible if you're s-off with Unrevoked Forever on Froyo. I had to switch to Amon Ra in order to install the update and then reflash Amon Ra after the update. Had to update Superuser after that but after that was fully rooted on the update.
There are several stock rooted versions of the OTA available, there's no reason that you need to lose root just to have the latest update.
If you are keen on losing root though, then go for it. You can install it with S-Off just fine, and since it'll remain S-Off you'll be able to flash a recovery on there and re-root by flashing a rooted rom.
If your intent is to have the latest update but also have root, then just flash one of the already-rooted stock roms available in the Android Development forum.
To hip kat, I actually don't like any custom roms, I'm an ogee only person and I tweak what I want or need myself. To tempe, how did you get clockwork off first assuming you had it? Also I used the unrevoked3 method but since mine is sprint, it automatically does a perm nand unlock.

Well, easiest is to just use Rom Manager to flash alternate recovery, that's what I did before running the OTA. After, you'll need to do it manually. If you search here on "recovery" you should find threads that have the pc36img.zip files for both Clockworkmod and Amon Ra. After installing the OTA, turn off the fastboot option under Settings/Applications. Copy the pc36img.zip file for the recovery you want to use to the SD card, shut down your phone and then hold volume down while turning it back on. Just follow the prompts on the screen from there. After the recovery is installed you should be able to boot up and have root. If the Superuser app give you FC's search around here for the fixed superuser zip and flash it.
You can go S-on with the Unrevoked S-On tool....
I don't want s-on hip, trying to keep s-off. And thanks tempe for your help.

According to the error you posted, it's just the blockbuster app that your missing. Did you uninstall other system apps? Or just that. You need to have all your system apps installed for it to work. I'll attatch the blockbuster app for you. You'll need to install it to /system/app using ADB or using Root Explorer. If adb, do this
adb remount
adb push Blockbuster_htc.apk /system/app
adb reboot
If using root explorer, just copy the apk to the /system/app folder and set the permissions the same as all the other apps in the system folder.
Also, it would be much easier for you just to flash a rooted stock rom. Here's a link for ya. You'd just flash the rom like normal, from within recovery. It'd save you some hassle.

I don't believe flashing the radio is necessary if you're doing the stock ota, I didn't have any issues with my current radio while I was using stock 2.3.3 (or any other ROM that I've used so far)
Alright I did the de-odex rooted ota but now the problem is once booted up, I cant update the prl or profile, it gives me an error. Im re-wiping the dalvik cache to see if that fixes it but is there any other steps I should try?
Side question, is a stock rom that came with the phone or an ota update a odex or de-odex?

Some Rooting/GB Flashing Assistance

Hello all,
I'm trying to assist my nephew in rooting his Evo and flashing GB to it but am running into issues as this is my first time rooting an Evo. I'm a thunderbolt user and have adb/rooting knowledge.
I used the autoroot.zip method to root and get access recovery just fine. The problem I'm running into is when I try and flash the MikG's GB rom (the radio flashes fine via hboot), I get an assert failed: write_raw_image("/tmp/boot.img","boot") (also tried re-downloading the rom as well thinking it was a corrupt download or the md5's didn't match). I tried flashing other roms but to no avail. My guess is the issues are lying in recovery, but can't be certain. At this point today, I'm going to try and unroot, and then re-root using unrevoked.
Another question is when I re-root, will i have to flash amon-ra's recovery via hboot as well? Any direction would be much appreciated as I'm stumped as far as the above error is concerned and haven't found any real definitive answers relating to the error. Thanks!!
here is the link i have for the AmanRA recover.. put it directly on your sd root.. and it should flash it self..

Thanks gonna give this a shot tonight, but hoping I don't receive that assert failed error message. I'm really hoping my problem lies me not using an updated recovery. My nephew is still rooted, so now I'm considering if I should unroot then start all over or just try an updated recovery option.
no you dont have to do it via hboot if you unroot then reroot with unrevoked you can get rom manager and flash a different recovery from there its super easy

[PATCH] Install Superuser, Busybox and Rooted Kernel (For Use After Obtaining S-OFF)

The first thing anyone is going to want to do once AlphaRev's S-OFF process is complete will be to get your device properly rooted within Android. I have created a simple update zip which will take care of the following for you:
Re-install the stock kernel, using a rooted ramdisk (credit jcase).
Install the Superuser app and su binary in /system/xbin.
Install and setup Busybox in /system/xbin.
Simply install this patch via CWM and reboot. From there you can proceed to run any root apps you need (such as Titanium).

AlphaRevX patches CWM for your recovery during the S-OFF process. And even if it fails you can follow a guide posted on this forum on how to fastboot it.
I flashed this .zip through CWM and Titanium backup won't work. It's telling me that it is unable to find root. I clicked the "Problems?" button and still nothing happened. I remember with the Eris it would run the busybox after you pushed that button. I might just try to install busybox manually as described on Titanium's wiki.
Any other thoughts before I do that?
I flashed this file on my stock but rooted/soff incredible 2, and i seem to have lost root privileges. Luckyily I made a backup before I flashed this so now I'm back to my original problem, of not being able to fix permissions via rom manger because it doesn't see root.
Hey, I have S-Off and patched CWM, but when I hold down the volume button and try to power on, it goes straight to the HTC screen. What am I doing wrong? Does fastboot need to be turned off?

Older EVO 4G HBOOT 2.10.0001

This phone was rooted already, then today I returned it to stock since the cyanogen7 that was on there did not... somehow... have the menu option to "update profile" I needed to change my phone number. I wanted to re-root, but I'm having trouble where to begin.
In the Power+Vol Down boot screen, it shows S-OFF, and HBOOT 2.10.0001
I cant make Revolutionary work because 2.15 is the lowest HBOOT it accepts.
If I choose the "recovery" option in that list, I get a black screen with a red triangle/exclamation point icon over an icon of the phone. I have to take the battery out to get the phone back on.
The phone does work, btw. But I miss the stuff I get when it's rooted. Anyway... what do I do now? How do I get the recovery/cyanogen7 on there if I cant get superuser permissions?
I used some other method back when I rooted this phone, but I haven't seen anything yet to spark my memory of the steps.
U are already s-off. No need for revolutionary. Go to dev thread and look for amon_ra recovery. Download it and follow directions to flash it. Then download whatever rom u want and flash that. The red triangle just means you have no recovery.
Support TrevE !!
I thought Revolutionary was how I got the custom recovery on the phone, which I need before I can root? I;d like to put CWM on there, since I have a paid version of Rom Manager already, and I believe they work together well.

You'll have to uninstall rom manager as you need CWM recovery. To back up, simply backup all your apps and data in tb, boot into recovery, select nandroid restore/backup, selecet backup, and you NEED the first 3 checked [boot, system, data]. Also if its your first, backup wimax as well, then copy it to your pc for safe keeping, in case you ever lost your wimax keys.

So I was thinking about upgrading and using revolutionary. Is there really any difference that would want me to re learn unrevoked, or just upgrade the h boot and software and use revo? any insight would be appreciated

There is no reason to "upgrade" to revolutionary. Unrevoked is the same thing as revo. Just unrevoked doesnt work with the newer hboots. If your already s-off in bootloader there is no difference. U can use any rom regardless if u used revo or unrevoked. The whole object of rooting is to get s-off. Once you have it there is nothing more you can do. Ive used both on unrevoked on my original evo. And revo on my newer refurb. There basically the same. Easy auto root pretty much.

CWM not installing! GT-i9505

Can not for the life of me get this too boot into CWM.
I have used CF auto root and confirmed I have root access, I have deleted the recovery file in system/etc and no matter what I do, CWM just won't boot, it just keeps booting into android recovery. I even tried taking the battery out as soon as CWM is finished to prevent a boot into the os and then trying to boot into it, still nada.

Already rooted, I read a guide that says delete install.recovery.sh, which I thought I did but it is not actually deleting, says it is but just does not disappear? wtf

Ok this is weird, root checker confirms I have root, I can grant things root access (rom manager, goomanager) but they always fail when setting the permissions, also can't delete that file in system/etc...so my device is like half rooted or something? Any ideas?
