[q] obtaining newest ota 3.70 with root help & guidance needed - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am rooted with unrevoked with with sprint stock rom on 3.29.651.5 pri version 1.77 003
I tried to unroot using unrevoked forever and flashing the pc36image file therefore I could recieve the ota and reroot: Well it didnt work because I am still rooted and got the error code.I want to flash the stock sprint rom with root and the newest ota, which I'm pretty sure I should go with Sprint Lovers?Problem thought is while messing with the unrevoked forever it put the S-on back on but obviously I am still rooted,so how should I go about this basically obtaining the rom with the ota with super user powers and everything. Is it still possible for me to just flash the rom to my phone as I have a 6 month old who is a major distraction if I have do it manually meaning typing in codes thru cmd prompt . Easiest way is needed { thanks

Go back and mess with unrevoked till you get S-Off again.
There are many roms based off the 3.7 ota.
Just load one into your phone.
If you are using RA1.8 recovery then move the zip to the root of the sdcard.
Use titanium to back up your aps.
Do a nandroid backup.
Follow the flashing directions on the thread with your rom on it.

whats the best rom you would suggest I like the whole htc sense and also I have clockwork mod recovery on now and that what comes with unrevoked,do I have to flash amon recovery perform nandroid backup then I can flash rom and also does amon ra recovery backup wimax keys

I had a much earlier clockwork thoroughly bork my system.
Now I do things manually.
I would install better terminal emulator from market, in order to flash ra1.8 recovery - not 2.1 at this time.
Follow the directions for ra1.8 here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=705026
In terminal emulator:
su(press enter)
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-RA-evo-v1.8.0.img(press enter)
reboot recovery(press enter)
-I use fresh's 3.501 rom. It's very stock.

Use the any HBOOT version number as long as it isn't 2.10 or 3.70.651.1
For future reference, once you are rooted just flash the latest ROM to update your version. You do not need to unroot and reroot to use a later version.

[Q] Quick Question about restoring Recovery on 1.39.00.05.31

Hi,
I am Currently running a Evo with software version 1.39.00.05.31 I didn't take the 1.47 update. I rooted/iinstall custom recovery using Unrevoked3. I want to take the OTA 1.47 so I can then apply Unrevoked 4 ever and then upgrade to 2.2 and maintain root. I downloaded the 1.47 update and created a pc36img.zip file (Used it on another evo) However when I try to flash it, it doesn't work and say something about wrong version. Wondering if anyone has the recovery.img and android.txt from 1.39.00.05.31.
Also if I can't get recovery back can I use Clockwork to apply the update that was downloaded? I would rather not restore to stock and restore all my apps and such.
Thanks

Update the radio via recovery then install unrevokedforever. Or just install unrevokedforever lol
You know your on the very first release of software for the phone right? We are all on 2.2 froyo right now where have you been? I liked 2.1 myself but the fixes alone are worth the updates

Well I'm not sure why you would want to do it that way but if your already rooted using unrevoked 3 (Not Full Root)
Then you can simply Download and apply Rooted 2.1 1.47.651.1 Rom to it or even the 2.2 3.26.651.6 (Most Recent)
But if I was you I'd use Titanium Backup to keep all your data so incase you can't use any recovery in the process at least you can restore it to any Rooted Rom or unrooted.
But to make this much simpler you need to use SimpleRoot that has Nand Unlock Option, also called 3 step Root.
This is in regards to your issue with Main Version Older Error when you tried using (PC36IMG) in bootloader.
If your gonna use SimpleRoot Make sure you have all the files included in your SD Card Otherwise PC36IMG by it self won't work.
Hope this Helps

[question] root after 2.2 RUU

Is it possible to use the 2.1 RUU after using the 2.2 RUU? I want to downgrade to use unrevoked. Thanks for the help.
If you're S-OFF, you can just root by installing a custom recovery using PB31IMG.zip and flashing a root zip.

Watch this video, has instructions and the necessary files to download listed in the information section.

Easy directions, and brings you back to Stock 2.1, .77 HBOOT and 1.xx Radio. Essentially, the way your phone was when you purchased it.
You backup anything you can, this will wipe your device.
After finishing this process, if you want to go back to the 2.2 RUU with Root...
1. Perform unrEVOked Root Process.
2. Flash unrEVOked forever.
3. Flash Stock Recovery
4. Perform 2.2 RUU (you will lose your root... here)
5. Flash ClockworkMod (you can do this because of the S-OFF function being invoked)
6. Flash a root payload containing su and superuser.apk
7. If you want to go ahead and revert to Stock Android 2e recovery (being prepared for other OTAs in the future)
If you need help feel free to PM me.
Full of win!

Thank you all so much!! I'm going to try this later tonight. If I want free tethering after 2.2 with root, do I just install the binaries and the old evo tether (pre) or has that changed too? I read something about changing a setting so Verizon doesn't pick it up.

[Q] Quick a stupid question about going back to stock rom

So I now have Clockwork Recovery 3.x and running cm7. I tried straight flashing the latest T-Mobile ROM (1.22?).
It fails right away. I am not really wanting to unroot or turn S-ON. Is it failing because I am using cwr 3.x and need to flash the 2.x recovery? I thought I read somewhere that to flash a Froyo rom 2.x is needed, and 3.x is only for the GB roms...
Also, if and when I do successfully flash the stock rom, will this remove root/s-ff or the other unlocks gfree performed? And the linked thread for flashing the OTA rom instructs to rename to update.zip... is that only for the non-rooted folks?
And lastly, since the clockwork recovery 2.x has been out there for a while, thread info is quite old. Can i simply reflash the 2.x recovery using ROM Manager?
Thanks in advance.
The 1.22 is just an update zip it is not a complete PC10IMG stock rom that is why it is failing, make sure you have s-off via gfree before flashing a stock PC10IMG other wise it will turn your s-on, there is only a 1.19 complete PC10IMG rom out right now, this is pre OTA.
Yes you should be able to use rom manager to reflash older CWM recovery

Ill try to help a fellow tampa area guy out
the stock rom your trying to flash isnt going to work with CWM 3.XX your need to replace it with 2.XX. flashing a stock rom will not remove root or s-off.
when i go back and forth using CWM from 3.xx to 2.xx i follow these directions... there super easy... and i have never had a problem with it.
1. Install clockworkmod from market.
2. Flash Clockworkmod recovery from Rom Manager.
3. Navigate to clockworkmod/download/koush.tandtgaming.com/recoveries (or where ever your recovery was downloaded to. This can be done in File Manager, Astro, or Androzip.
4. Mine was "recovery-clockwork-2.5.1.3-vision.img". Rename it to "recovery-clockwork-2.5.1.3-visionXXX.img" or something obviously different.
5. Download clockworkmod 3.0 from hereish:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=893933
6. Move your recovery.img to clockworkmod/download/koush.tandtgaming.com/recoveries and name it recovery-clockwork-2.5.1.3-vision.img
7. Go into ROM Manager and Flash Clockworkmod recovery, it will say its still 2.5.1.3 when your done. Reboot into recovery and you'll be welcomed by a new orange 3.0

of course you can just reverse these directions to go back to 2.xx...
you shouldnt have to change the stock rom name to "update.zip" just flash the zip like you would any other rom through CWM...
Thanks WarBird! I think I'll just flash the recovery images using flash_image. Can you confirm what joemn said though? If I want to flash the stock ROM, do I need both the PC whatever and the ota?
Also
make sure you have s-off via gfree before flashing a stock PC10IMG other wise it will turn your s-on

This doesn't make sense. Based on this, you're saying that if I have s-on, flashing pc10img will... turn s-on...?

You are misunderstanding me, what I am saying is if you rooted via the old method and don't have radio s-off via gfree flashing a stock PC10IMG will turn your s back on, and what I told you about the 1.22 update zip is correct.

Ah I see. Since I was late to the G2 game, I did use gfree to get s-off as mentioned in my op. Thanks!

Help with Update issue

So I was rooted (running no roms). Used this method HERE to go back to stock/unrooted. All went well.
However, now when I try to look for system updates it says nothing available. it did when i was rooted, but obviously would fail on install due to root.
Any suggestions?
If you want to root again, it'd be fastest to just reroot (takes like 5 minutes with unrevoked) and flash the rooted stock rom instead of updating OTA. That way you'll be rooted & stock, and won't have to worry about waiting on a root method for the new OTA. If you don't want to be rooted, just keep checking... it'll show up eventually.
(from... Evo/MIUI/Tapatalk)
That is a possibly way. just sort of "bugged" me that it wasn't showing the update anymore. I will take a look in development to grab the OTA rooted files.
Thank you
if you used Unrevoked3 you should have S-Off Just run Amon RA and install it in recovery and download the new 2.3.3 odexed or de-odexed and install that via recovery after you install the Amon RA

S-Off but on 6.16hboot w/o root access?

okay so i updated to the new rom by ruu method and i was already rooted when i did it. So here is the deal now, im trying to use root required apps and its telling me im not rooted the su binary is not installed or it is in the wrong directory so i click okay and i launch my phone into bootloader mode and it shows revolutionary s-off hb6.16.00 and i am not able to get into recovery mode. So am i really not rooted? Did the update only make ir look like my s is off?
what i want to do? I want to be on s-off and rooted for reals instead of fakey.
First download and flash amon RA FNMA thru bootloader. In that recovery you can flash superuser and binaries. There is an option for it. U are already s-off so you r almost there.
Support TrevE !!
Hey,
Did you install a recovery when you turned s-off? I had it happen once when switching roms that something must have went wrong between the rom and super user and I had to run recovery to get it back to a previous version of super user in order for it to work and be able to manage root, even though I already had s-off.
and if you didnt flash the recovery then:
defiantly listen to the post before me, go flash the amon recovery!
Good luck let us know how you do!
Your right steve i didnt flash a recovery but because i thought i could do it in my recovery after the ruu install but it turns out that the ruu must have taken it off because i have never really use ruu just zips so is there a clockworkmod file that i can change use in the bootloader flash update method?
Where can i find that other recovery program 2nd poster?
grabbed that recovery here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=705026
then usb toggle through recovery to get the su flashed and good to go.
thank you
actually no bueno!! su app still wont update says root access failed when i try to update it and also busy box not installed and also i dl an app to check root access and it says root is not on device so what i have is a supersonic device with s-off and custom recovery working and also was able to flas su through recovery yet i still get messages from apps saying device is not rooted??? I guess i spoke to soon.
Im just going to try and flash a custom rom from recovery and hopefully the system files will load correctly i will do a nand back up for this one first of course.. ill be back.
i used energys newest release and holy kentucky durby batman it works my system files are back to root access.Maybe has to do with something then from the stock ruu bacause i went to the bootloader after putting energy back on and it says hb6.16.1002 which is what i got with the stock ruu i used, and s-off still and root access available. awsome.

Keep in mind that having S-OFF and having root access are two different things even though they are usually together: S-OFF allows you to flash whatever you want on to the phone while having root access means that you have access to basically every aspect of the phone (application-wise) on that specific ROM. For example, it is possible to flash stock (which has no root access) and keep S-OFF which will allow you to flash anything else whenever.
When flashing the RUU it overwrites the custom recovery ( Ra - TWRP ) and also removes the ability for Superuser to do its job. So you broke your " root " .
I don't know if it will work in your case but try to re-run whatever method you used to gain root access in the first place. See if you can find a PC36IMG.zip that is already rooted. and then a PC36IMG.zip of a recovery.
You can flash both by booting into the bootloader. Remember to remove / delete the first ( rooted rom ) image from the SD card before you run the recovery PC36IMG.zip.
Man I hope that all made sense !
hboot 6.16/s-off revolutionary/stock recovery/no root
I had the same issue. hboot 6.16 revolutionary s-off but i was not rooted and on the stock recovery. i thought i was a goner because no pc36img i downloaded would flash in bootloader and ruu's wouldn't flash. I just recently started revolutionary and when i plugged my phone in revolutionary said 'you are already s-off, do you want to flash revolutionary clockwork recovery?' Once I hit Y (yes) it flashed the recovery and i was rooted again. this took a whole lot of guessing and checking so hopefully this helps someone
