Hi everyone
I posted earlier asking for help on rooting and flashing custom roms. I was kindly given the link to the complete guide in the desire development section.
I followed all the steps and successfully created a goldcard and flashed the device with the stock rooted desire rom, however that's as far as I got as now my phone's screen won't work at all. This is what makes me think it's an SLCD model as I've heard such problems as well.
I've tried using unrevoked to flash the slcd modified recovery image, that doesn't work either. I've all drivers installed correctly and followed everything precisely.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
What rom exactly did you flash with?
I followed this guide theunlockr.com/2010/06/07/how-to-root-the-htc-desire
Basically I got as far as applying a stock Desire rom that was rooted. After that the screen no longer works. The phone itself works as unlocking and locking prompts the phone to light the hard buttons and also receiving calls work.
At this pointI'm not fussed if someone can tell me how to put a rom on there that will work whatever it be, i'll ust have to do it blind as I can't use the screen. I've got the goldcard ready.
A ROM guaranteed to work is the official Froyo. It cannot be rooted:
http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Bra...3.00.32U_5.09.00.20_release_140022_signed.exe
An earlier ROM may work but it would depend on which ROM you flashed.
Thank you for replying, I will try this in the morning as I need sleep
Can you let me know if this will fix the problem with my screen not working?
Yes, that's the point of it...

My situation was a bit different.
I got an Asian ROM & wanted the European ROM. I followed 1 of the guides here & somehow i got a black screen (SLCD brick), possibly because I got the wrong RUU.
Found this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=748498
I followed method 1, didn't work.
But method 2 is a cure.

Thank you ever so much

Ok. I just got my EVO Tuesday and while I cannot confirm for sure that i had 3.30 to begin with I am pretty sure I did.
Not knowing that the guide i was following to root the device was for an older version I attempted to root, and bricked the phone. I managed to restore the phone using "RUU_SuperSonic_S_Sprint_WWE_3.29.651.5_Radio_2.15.00.09.01_NV_1.77_CNV_release_150224_signed.exe" and I was back to normal....or so i thought
Now the camera/camcorder does not work. I am assuming that my phone was 3.30 and the 3.29.651 I am on now doesnt speak to the camera the same way. It was rumored the 3.30 builds had camera fixes so this makes sense.
Here are my actual questions, with number 1 being the biggest and most important to me at the moment:
1. How do i get back to the 3.30 version the phone came with? IS there a RUU similar to what i used for 3.29 to restore the phone? Where can i get this?
2. If i cant get back to 3.30, is there any way to fix the camera?
3. How can I successfully root 3.29.651? Ive tried every guide i have found here, unrevoked 3, and the one touch rooter programs, but none seem to work. They all fail applying the radio image with FAIL-PU
I appreciate any support and thanks in advance to everyone who can help

I just replaced my busted EVO for a new one. Has the new 3.30 in it, hardware is 003. After rooting I lost camera/video due to the PC36IMG I had used while rooting. I installed Myns Warm 2.2 rev3 and got camera/video back, so far that's the only one I can get it on. Just for SnG's I changed out kernels to Kings, and sure enough lost camera and vid. Reflashed 2point2 rev3 with stock HTC kernel and back to working cam. Hopefully this will help. I haven't tried Sprint Lovers yet, but I would imagine it would work the same as Myn's. Any other rom I have run (MIUI _CM6.1) no camera again.

So I'm looking into this unrEVOked thing, and it seems as though I could root my EVO just fine with it. However my HBOOT is 2.02 and my build number is 3.30.651.3 (this is the part that worried me, since my friend said that a EVO with the hardware version of 0004 and that build number won't be able to be rooted).
My question is basically is there any method of rooting that I could do with no worries? Somebody mentioned to me this method right here but I want to be certain I would be alright with that before I get started. The steps aren't the issue, I'm just trying to do my homework beforehand and be sure I'm ok.
the method you linked will work. unrevoked will not. pm me or gtalk [email protected] for help. i sitll havent gotten a hboot 2.02 person to give me enough time to let me help them root.
I have a 0004 hboot 2.02 device, and used that method. I had many issues during the middle of the process, but made it through using a microSD memory card reader to rename those pc36img.zip files...
Worked great!

Hey Dkdude36, I have questions along the same lines. For hboot 2.02, what other rooting options exist that DO NOT involve the use of Unrevoked's components. Looking through the download files, you'll notice both referenced methods (this and this ) use the file unrevoked-forever. So, what gives?
I am personally on the lookout for a rooting process (for hboot 2.02) that doesnt use that method. The reason being that it's a bit tedious to unroot.
unrevoked forever is different than unrevoked. the methods are completely valid. unrevoked-forever seems to be the key ingredient in rooting 2.02

So, if I currently have hboot 2.02, and I want to 'downgrade' to the eng build .76.2000, what are the steps? Root with whatever flavor of unrevoked-forever that works with my EVO (hardware 003), then flash the hboot .76.2000 downgrade zip? I don't even understand why I need hboot 2.02 versus the earlier builds. Besides it also appears the earlier root methods (1 or 2 clicks, Simple Root 1.47.651.1,etc detailed here will not work on 2.02.).
Got around to rooting the phone just fine using the method I linked. However I can't installed CM 6.1 RC at all. It gets stuck at the white EVO 4G splash screen. I'm assuming it's an issue with 0004 EVO's?

I've been trying to figure this out for a few days now... Apparently it's the kernel. A guy in the official forum said he used the toast test kernel 2.6.35 and everything works, including the camera! I'm just having a hard time finding it!

I don't know if that's going to happen anytime soon. I just installed the lastest nightly with snap's 7.6 cfs kernel. Everything works, and I'm super happy! Still use Frost, Fresh, MIUI, Myn's Warm, and everything else too...
tho this may seem like a dumb question i just got my evo over the weekend and i havent stumbled upon the answer yet....how do you know what hboot you have? i see that i have hardware 004 and i see that i have the newest build number i just not sure where or how to tell the Hboot version. Any ideas? Thanks.
Just boot into hboot. Power off, and then hold power and volume down. You are now in hboot.
Google brings back a lot of people who have this problem but no-one seems knowledgeable enough to have a fix for it hence my post here. Since I followed the How to downgrade, Easy S-Off and the tried and tested radio.img flash guides and flashed Leedroid (13/01 epic stable build) I've had an infrequent (i don't reboot much) problem with my DHD freezing on the HTC screen during boot. I've solved this in the past by reflashing (as I can still enter the bootloader and Clockwork Mod) from an SD card but this is getting annoying.
The people on Google who are having this problem have said they've returned their phones however If I were to do that I would have to go straight to HTC as I got mine from eBay, are HTC going to helpful in this situation?
So Is there a known fix for this that I'm missing? Maybe the latest Leedroid?
On a side note if there is no fix is it even possible revert my DHD to level of stock such that HTC won't know I've been mucking around with it? I took to easy S-Off route that apparently can be reversed and I didn't SIM Unlock it but due to my over confidence I can't be sure I kept all the backups of the stock stuff that I should have kept.
Anyway, thanks guys. I'll just hang out here with no phone for a bit hoping there is a way to get it to boot because I'd really hate to lose some of the MMS message I've been sent .
You should do a full wipe and try a new rom, for example the newest LeeDroid or Android Revolution HD.
It is possible to revert to stock so that HTC will never know, just follow the S-ON instructions in my Radio Tool thread.

Many thanks for the reply. I did a ClockworkMod wipe and went for the new Leedroid (I've no idea if its the best but it was the first I spotted after rooting my phone), guess I'll have to wait and see if it happens again but touch wood no problems so far.
I've just been looking through the Revolution thread and spotted your wipe tool so if it does happen again I'll try that. I'd also like to say many thanks for your s-off thread, its very well written and easy to understand, and your work supporting the DHD is outstanding.
Hey all,
***ISSUE*** I can only boot into recovery or a ROM once. ***ISSUE***
I recently replaced my EVO through Sprint, and rooted. (unsuccessfully with unRevoked, but successfully with AutoRoot). After I used unRevoked (but before using AutoRoot) this issue started popping up.
I can flash a recovery image via Bootloader/Hboot or PARTICULAR ROMs, Sprint Lover's seems to be the most reliable, CM7 does not seem to work at all, and be able to access them once, and upon reboot I get the white "htc EVO 4G" screen and it hangs there until I reboot. Once that happens I cannot access recovery or boot into the ROM until I reflash from a PC36IMG.zip in Hboot/bootloader.
Here's my hardware info:
SUPERSONIC EVT2-3 ENG S-OFF
HBOOT-0.76.2000 (PC3610000)
MICROP-041f
TOUCH PANEL-ATMEL224_16ab
RADIO-2.15.00.11.19
Hardware Revision #3
My Evo was originally on HBOOT 2.10, but I flashed an eng-PC36IMG.zip that let me install the ENG bootloader on it, which has made it so things flash more reliably.
Anyone have any advice? It seems really odd to me that software would work once and not again. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
There could be something from the rooting process that's affecting your phone somehow, although that's really strange. I would suggest unrooting, getting fully back to stock, & rooting again. If you're not going to be able to reboot your phone without reflashing, which seems like a pain, it might be best to redo it.
Other than that, I'm baffled :/

I am in the process of unrooting now to see if that works. I installed the unrevoked-son via ClockworkMod Recovery 3.0.0.5, but I still had S-OFF when I went to HBoot. I'm not sure, but I think I remember somewhere that the ENG bootloader does that.
Regardless, I'm installing the latest (3.70) RUU now and will see what that does.

Yea, im pretty sure the. 76 eng hboot is permanently s off. Also, I was unaware that hboot version 2.1 was downgradeable, I thought it wasn't able to be changed. Interesting. Maybe that's part of your problem, im really not sure. Sounds annoying though. Hopefully unrooting and starting fresh will help.

Thanks for the reply k2buckley!
I've now run the S-ON tool and used the 3.70 RUU to unroot my Evo. After the RUU completed its process my EVO rebooted and has not left the white "HTC EVO 4G" screen. (EDIT: I checked in Hboot and am now S-ON and on the 2.10 bootloader.) I've let it run for about ten minutes now and I'm not hopeful.
Now that I have it in a state where I can return it to Sprint I don't think I'm going I'm going to mess with it any more. It's such a shame. My first Evo was wonderful until an odd software glitch bricked it, and now this. It's been a really frustrating couple of weeks.
After this experience I don't think I'll be using unrevoked again. I loved having the speed and features of CM7 on my first Evo, but I'm debating rooting at all at this point.

If you do, root it manually - save yourself from all these headaches of the autoroot programs.
Thanks for the advice Heaterz16!
I'd love to root manually to ensure everything goes well. The guide that I saw indicating how to manually root was taken down and linked to AutoRoot as the way to go. Could you point me towards a guide for manual rooting?
Take it back to Sprint. I had one that would rarely boot, it would take 20 or so tries. When it finally did boot, the screen would freeze up & I'd have to pull the battery. They gave me a new one, no questions asked & I had it the next day. That phone was never rooted, it was only two weeks old. I have insurance, so all of my replacements have been free. I had the one before that 3-4 weeks before the usb port gave out. I got my third one three months ago, rooted it, and have had no problems since. I hated the Evo for about a month when mine kept breaking.
I would also suggest manually rooting. The "one-click" methods are easy to do but difficult to troubleshoot. Manual methods are a little more difficult to do but cause far less problems.
Just remember to delete any evidence of rooting from your sd card or just remove it entirely before taking the phone to Sprint. I hope everything works out for you!

Thanks for the advice. I plan to just go to Sprint without my SD card and tell them the situation.
If you could point me towards a good guide for manual rooting I'd be grateful. After this last experience I'd much rather just do it myself and ensure it goes correctly.
Unrevoked gives issues like this. Try to start with autoroot this time.
Do not try to downgrade your bootloader this time. Make sure you nandroid back up and flash different ROMs and ensure things are working before you set anything up. Also make sure you are wiping everything. I suggest using Caulkin's Format All and flashing that in recovery.

Thanks for chiming in, sekigah84.
The reason I tried downgrading my bootloader last time was that the issue appeared consistently with the 2.10 bootloader (tried flashing various recoveries, ROMs, radio versions, etc, over four days on that bootloader) and I thought reverting to ENG 0.76 might help correct the problem. I was very careful about doing nandroid backups and wiping cache, dalvik before installing ROMs, etc. when I could access recovery. Restoring from a backup was never possible because upon reboot I'd simply get the white HTC screen.
The problem seemed to start immediately after using unrevoked and didn't go away regardless of what I flashed or how many times I RUUed.
I definitely won't use unrevoked again. I'd consider using AutoRoot, but I'd prefer just to do a manual root process, or maybe not root at all.

Here's a link for you. As you said, this post has been retired, and it links you to xhausx's autoroot, however it still contains all of the info and instructions, and that method will still work for you. It's not outdated yet. So if you want to run it manually, follow Zikronix's instructions within the first post of this thread. Have fun!
