If not is there an app that will enable it?
Thanks
not officially since atm it is running 2.1 but you can wifi teather if you root your phone then install and ap such as barnicle wi fi teather works well for me
Installed Barnicle and it appears to be running but niether my Vista laptop or my Win7 netbook see it.
I bought mine from Germany, and it too had the "3G mobile hotspot"-app. I´ve tried it, but can´t make it work properly. Not that I put that much effort into it...
The USB-tethering is working just fine though, I´m using it right now.

My Defy from Austria has given me no trouble using wifi tethering.
Though WPA2 encryption didn't work for some reason, it worked flawlessly with WEP.
Is there any chance you can upload it here?

Downloaded and tried to install but for some reason it won't. It is the 3G mobile hotspot app though. Guess it's only for European Defys.
Edit: After further research I found an app called Wireless Tether 2.0.5. Works great. There is supposed to be a newer version(2.0.6) but I can't find it on the market.
Edit2: Nevermind I found it. If intrested it's can be had here: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list

Thank you for posting that link! I am new to Android and "rooting" cell phones. after rooting my Defy I was spinning my wheels finding a teather program that worked. That program is awesome!!!!!
Thanks again. I now have the perfect phone - beach resistant, work resistant, email, apps and it now has tethering. Now i get to use my iPhone and Blackberry Bold for door stops!
I've been using the stock wifi tethering app since got the phone - works sweet for me

There is no stock wifi tethering app for the US T-Mobile Defy.
Tethering via motorola's 3g mobile hotspot application works fine, same for the usb tethering (without any changes, rooting etc.).
But one thing I found was that the data traffic via tethering is not counted. It neither shows up in the internal traffic counter nor in applications like 3G watchdog. I couldn't really figure out any reason for this! Anyone else a clue?
Happy to report that the 3G Mobile Hotspot app comes standard with the T-Mobile 2.2.1 ROM and works great.
Where can I get this ROM.

Just confirming what JamesDax mentioned. Android-Wifi-Tether 2.0.6 works well with my Defy (rooted stock ROM) and Windows 7 laptop as a client so far without issue. I had skipped over it until his post because I could find no evidence of the Defy having 'netfilter' support as required by the application. Based on JamesDax's postI figured I would give it a shot. (Thanks James!). Note: the only encryption it offers is WEP 64 which is very weak. App is worthy of a donation.
I also tried Barnacle Wifi Tether previously and it would behave as if it were working but the SSID could not be detected by any client I tried. I tested various settings in an attempt to get it working to no avail. I do believe it's something to do with it's interaction with the Defy as it seems to work on various other devices properly from reading reviews and discussions on the app.

Worked fine for me over GPRS, WCDMA and HSDPA. Of course it's slow on GPRS. I think it depends on your provider / signal /data plan whether this is a viable option for you.
Just tried the app that was previosly posted and it works great connected really fast to my laptop

I have rooted and flashed VirusROM on my HTC EVO 4G. I used to be able to use Sprint's Hotspot app to tether Wifi to my carputer. I was using it Thursday on the way to my in-law's place for Thanksgiving. I left and then could not get it to work again. The computer connects and the signal is at full strength but all browsers say "Page cannot be displayed" and my weather updates down load anymore. I tried using other computers/devices and all connect but none show an internet connection. I can use Google Maps, send/receive pics and videos, and use the internet on my EVO but I cannot share it. Did Sprint cut me off? Is there a setting I mistakenly changed?? I was under the impression that I can tether for free when its rooted. I even download to different tether apps and got the same results. Anybody have any suggestions? Any and all help would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks in advance...

Although I am not using wifi tether, I am using the built in wireless tether through Miui. It is working flawlessly on my Mac. I suggest you change your SSID and maybe your password. If no success delete your network settings and try again.

I've never heard of Miui. I'll try that next. I already tried changing the SSID, the passwords, and even the encryption type and nothing worked...I'm gonna go back and try it all again. Thanks for the input, dude!!
Didn't know Miui was a ROM...I like the way I have everything set on Virus so I was hoping to not have to change ROM's. Thanks again though! Please keep suggestions coming, guys!

Try this link, not sure which one will work for you but the pre-14 works for me. Just try each one untill you find one that works on your ROM, sorry I can't point you to ont that I know will work on that rom. I know the link says Nexus one but they will work on the Evo just fine. Most of these act just linke a router, not an ad-hoc.

Sprint's HotSpot and Wifi Tether don't give the option and Barnacle was already set on Channel 1 :/ Thanks though
Wireless tether is what I was talking about I use pre 14, just open the app and menu/settings, its the 4th option down.
I don't know how I missed that option. I went in and changed it to Channel 1 but no change...my roommate came home and sparked up his Incredible's hotspot and it worked perfectly of the bat...something has got to be wrong with my EVO
does your evo say that a device connected and does it show that anything downloaded under the wireless tether app mine used to get stuck at just over 1kb of data then i modded my framework_res.apk and somehow i can tether again
It does seem to stay on a very low KB like 1.1...although it does show the devices that are connected...
Mine did the exact same thing although im not entirely sure what I did that fixed this I edited the xml code for the notification bar and edited the notification bar which somehow caused my tethering to work

I have been using my dhd as a wifi hotspot for my laptop for quite sometime, recently I got a nookcolor and I tried to connect to it as well. It showed that the wifi is connecter, but no internet.
I tried connecting to other sources, like a regular router, a nexus one, all works.
The settings are all default, including the DHCP being checked.
Anyone know why?
same problem I am with orange UK - wondering if just dont allow you to share your signal. I know in USA they have to pay their provider to use wifi hotspot. I posted on this before but nobody replied.
Well I persisted to try it out again, flipping around the authentication methods (None, WEP, WPA etc). Now this is the weird thing.
Gtalk/Gmail app on my nookcolor works perfectly fine. On browsers (stock, opera mini), nothing loads ....
which network are you with? and are you using stock rom?
I'm on a Singapore network, there's no restriction on tethering, and yes, I'm using stock rom (not rooted) on my desire hd, nookie froyo on my nookcolor.

I didn't want to make a new thread, so i thought i ask here.
Have any of you tried speedtest.net or the speedtest app?
If i do a speed test on my DHD it shows 4,5mbit download (HSDPA). But if i use HTC WIFI hotspot to share my phones internet connection, then i get only about 2mbit download on my laptop. Is that normal?

I was rooted and running Barnacle just fine in Froyo, then upgraded to GB. Now it does not seem to be working. Im rooted in GB still (just be a different program) and it shows Barnacle has root access.
It goes and says NAT is unavail, restarting NAT.. and nothing after that.
Heres a screen shot of what its saying:
Guess this is a common error with GB
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/dr...e-any-roms-dont-have-wifi-tether-blocked.html
Seems like GB has a built in wifi/hot spot thats taking over control of the avail network.
So far i havnt come across a fix
Also tried Open Garden to no avail

EDIT: Update in post #7
Anyone find anything for a work around?
Im thinking about going back to Froyo

I used the latest android-wifi-tether (beta 6). In the settings go to "Device Profile" and change it to Motorola Droid X, then connect. After you connect toggle the Pro into airplane mode and toggle it off again. You should be able to surf and will not get the "Verizon" pay wall. I know its one added step, but it's a whole lot easier and cheaper then paying $20+ more a month...

Yes you are correct. But with Verizon you have to pay an additional, I believe, $20 a month for the built in feature.
If you're rooted there are apps put there where you can do it for free at your own risk.
I did find a solution to the problem a week or two ago. But last Friday I upgraded to the Razr. And will have to find a work around for that phone haha.
I was having signal go in and out at work all day yesterday, and it turns out Sprint was replacing a bunch of hardware in my area (Atlanta). Now, I cannot get wifi tether to work. My computer will connect, but it will not get internet. Wired tether works fine. I've tried the Sprint Hotspot in Calkulin's 3.0, and also the Hotspot in the ICS Goodness. I've also tried Open Garden, Wifi Tether for Root, and Fox__* (I can't remember the exact name).
It will not connect. Tried different roms, 3g/4g, resetting network ##72382# or whatever that code is, did a complete reset, tried different roms, etc.
The only thing I can conclude is that whatever Sprint updated here locally fixed this loophole for the hacked hotspot. Atlanta is an "A" market, and typically one of the first to get updated, so if this is the case, maybe nobody else is seeing it
Any ideas on what else I can try?? I need this wifi tether desperately.
have you tried foxfi?

I am not a dev, nor do I know a lot about anything. I seriously doubt changing tower hardware would "fix" a software workaround in a phone for internet sharing. I don't have an answer as to why or why not, but it sounds highly unlikely. I am speculating the two are not related.

Had this same problem about a year or so ago. Download "Root Checker" from Google Play. I forgot why but sometimes Root will be lost but your phone will say you are rooted. I don't remember the details. All you have to do is Root again if this is the case.
Try going into superuser app and updating the su binary, when mine get outdated sometimes wifi tether quits working but other root apps will still work.

Yes, no go on that one as well. No matter the program, I get the issue with my computer "unable to connect" on Windows 7, and also limited/no connectivity with Windows XP..
How can I generate a log to find out what's going on? I'm starting to get the feeling it has something to do w/ wifi driver, although wifi works fine, 4g works fine, 3g works, and wired tether works fine, I cannot get wireless tether to work with 3g or 4g..
Tried Sprint Hotspot, Wireless Tether (for root), Open Garden, Foxfi..

I agree, however, I'm assuming there's also an upgrade in software to go along with hardware changes, and they may have rolled something out at the same time. It could be a coincidence, but I've never had a problem before.

Ok, this is interesting. Do you all know if Wifi tether has always been ad hoc? I thought it used to show up as an AP in Windows.
Also, once I updated SU, my XP would connect to Wifi Tether only, but then tried the Win 7 and gave me the same "unable to connect" box. Now, neither of them work again.
Ideas? How to log, etc?
Do you all know now LAN settings would affect connectivity?
It seems Wired Tether uses 172.20.xx.xxx/30 while I believe the others were using 192.168.2.0 or 192.168.1.1, etc.
I'm in the Atlanta area (North West - Kennesaw/Acworth). I use WiFi Tether (the open source app not the built in), just tested it, I was able to connect and use the internet from my Nexus 7.

Foxfi is broken on the SE4GT since the ICS update.
Installation instructions (for Sprint Users):
1. Make sure "Unknown Sources" is checked in phone Settings (under Applications or Developer).
2. Tap on the following links to download the apk file for FoxFi.
3. From phone notifications select the downloaded file. This will install FoxFi.
FoxFi latest version: 1.91.3
*Support for the new Galaxy S3 and the new ICS update for Epic Touch are being worked on. Should be compatible soon in a future update.

As far as I know, the built in sprint hotspot is the only way to get infrastructure mode. All others are adhoc. If there is a setting for it for a profile, I think I remember reading somewhere to pick the galaxy nexus profile.
I just tried Wifi Tether in netd mode and it worked as Infrastructure. Client was Win7 x64.
Good to know too that I have a backup internet source if the main goes out. Not great but better than nothing.
Was looking for a good way to enable the hotspot on my ATT Optimus G and tried a bunch of crappy apps. Finally found one that works well so I thought I'd share it.

After installing it, set the device mode to the Galaxy S3 and presto, it works. My iPad sees it, connects, and works like a champ. Only catches are you gotta root and be careful with ATT snooping your data since they will try to make you pay more for tethering.

The North American ATT version does not have a hotspot button in that drop down menu. Also, because it's ATT you have to pay extra for tethering. The solution I listed above is for those that want to run the hotspot without paying ATT extra to do it.
And an update on Foxfi: Apparently our phone and the SG3 use similar chipsets for network connectivity. Unfortunately, the latest version of Foxfi does not work with the SG3 or our phone for mobile hotspot. You can use the bluetooth DUN instead. Hopefully they will put out an update to add the right drivers.

Well I can say that none of these options work on the sprint varient, as I've tried Wifi tether for root, barnacle, and FoxFi, and all show enabled, but I can't find the device to connect to it. So if it really is enabled, I can't see the SSID. I havn't tried to manually connect to the SSID, but I have run all tethering apps with SSID broadcast on, so I should be able to see it...
Never mind got it working using Generic (wlan0) ICS/JB setting...
Please explain, i am using pdanet on mine with sprint via usb tether . I don't want to root at this time but want to get hotspot free.
1 thing I've found with USB tether is that it only works at half speed of what I get for speed the galaxy s3 that I had prior would get full Speed. Also when connected to my laptop via USB I get hey message stating slow battery charge
Anyone know what I can do to increase speed through the USB cable

The LG Optimus G E971/E973 (which is what this forum is for, NOT AT&T or Sprint) supports WiFi hotspots by default. There is an option to enable and use this natively in the settings application.

^ ya it doesn't work if you don't have tethering enabled on your data plan
most of the new new plans have tethering enabled is a different thing
this thread is for enabling tethering without carrier restrictions
for ex rogers doesnt allow tethering on north american one rate plans
Works thanks

Was looking for a good way to enable the hotspot on my ATT Optimus G and tried a bunch of crappy apps. Finally found one that works well so I thought I'd share it.
Wifi Tether (Free) by Müller, Lemons, Buxton (apparently I'm a noob and can't post links so go find it yourself)
After installing it, set the device mode to the Galaxy S3 and presto, it works. My iPad sees it, connects, and works like a champ. Only catches are you gotta root and be careful with ATT snooping your data since they will try to make you pay more for tethering.
