[Q] Need SERIOUS help - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a rooted EVO (with UnrEVOked-forever).
1. the tool won't undo UnrEVOked
2. can't change from ClockworkMod to RA (ROM manager says that RA is Current)
3. when I turn the EVO on, prior to the white HTC screen, I get a screen that looks like a computer screen when you set the resolution wrong.
4. SuperUser is still one of my APPS, EVEN after I took the phone to Sprint to be reloaded.
5. Flashing image doesn't work
6. RUU reports error 171 ... never gets to bootloader
the issues started after a I installed UnrEVOked-forever, but not sure it had anything to do with issues.
is there a way to reset this phone at a level DEEPER that Nandroid?
I really need to get this phone back to Pure HTC EVO as I suffer several issues including LOCK-UPS.
I normally use Warm Two Point Two & Baked Snack both are unreliable now.

Did I brick my Dinc SLCD??? Help please!

Ok, so I did unrevoked and have an unrooted phone. Started to get bored with the stock 2.2 and wanted better battery life.
My Dinc has an SLCD screen. So, when I go into the standard clockwork recovery, it goes to a black screen with white bars on the side. I had to do a custom flash recovery for my phone through unrevoked/flash. I then did a nand backup.
Tonight, I downloaded MIUI and attempted to install through the recovery flash. I ended up getting errors. So, I then thought that I needed to go through the ROM Manager app.... when I tried to flash the ROM, it automatically switched my recovery back to the Clockworks recovery..... then tried to go into the recovery portion of the ROM flash. Needless to say, I had to do a battery pull. Now when I try to do a normal boot, the phone freezes at the white screen that reads "HTC Incredible". If I boot into recovery... I can get to the hboot screen with the three droids at the bottom, but a script comes up on the screen and I think that it says something about no image... from there I can navigate around the recovery menue, but nothing works for me getting past this. If I go to recovery, it just keeps going to the black screen with the two white bars.
Is there anything that I can do. I am wondering if it is trying to flash the ROM everytime it comes on.... but this recovery method is not working on my phone.
Any help would be greatly appreaciated!
I believe you need a special clockwork recovery for SCLD screens. Not exactly sure where to find it on here, but it should be hanging around somewhere. I hope I helped ya out a bit, good luck.

OK, so I was working a 24 hour shift yesterday when I posted this... unable to download any zip or exe file (damn firewalls)... This morning I was able to remove the miui zip from the root of the sd card via card reader. I then copied the PPB31IMG.zip to the root of my sd card. Then booted into recovery. I asked if I wanted to flash this file, I said yes and then it gave me the correct recovery menue. from there I was able to choose the recovery image that I had created yesterday. It seemed as though it was going to work, booted up to a stock rom that required manual setup (like on a new phone). Then I started to get FC's all over the place. I was able to find on my sd card two other nandroids that were saved in a different place than the only one that recovery allowed me to choose from. I moved the newly found recovery folders to the same location as the first and now I had those recovery options listed. I chose one from last week and thankfully my phone is restored and working.
I am not sure if this information will help anyone with an SLCD Dinc. There seems to be a huge difference in how these phones react to roms and tweaks. I am very hesitant to attempt any other ROMs at this time. On my eris, I flashed about 30 different ROMs and about 5 differnet radios. I am not new to this, but this SLCD Dinc has been a headache.
Any Aosp rom on an Slcd takes a different kernel. Get yourself the koush test#2 kernel and just keep it on your sd card. Flash it everytime you do a AOSP rom.
Sense based roms all seem to be ok as the kernel was built with Slcd in mind.
Well I'm glad you got it back up and running. I've heard about them not working well with some roms, I didn't know it was with all asop roms.

Thanks for the info on the AOSP roms. I did not know either. I wonder if there is a way to make the AOSP roms to support it by providing the new kernal in the flash or at least making a note on the AOSP ROM forum page that states the issues with SLCD Dinc's and what needs to be done to avoid problems. I would venture to say that anyone new to this stuff and was feeling brave would not be able to figure out how to restore there phone when it was acting the way mine was. Just my 2 cents.
Thanks again for the info.

[Q] First Time Root Question

Hey everyone,
I just saw that Unrevoked came out with the Nov. OTA root for the DINC and I’m thinking about rooting. I have a stock SLCD DINC and the only thing I have done is the ##778 wifi tethering fix. Being that this is going to be my first root experience, I have a few questions. I am going to use the guide found here to root.
jonsuh.com/2010/11/root-your-droid-incredible-how-to
What program should I use to backup the phone before I root? My goal in rooting would be just to remove all of the bloatware for now. Later I would like to check out some custom ROMs, but for now, removing all the crap that came installed on the phone would be fine. When rooting, will I erase everything on the phone including the installed programs? After the root is done, what can I use to remove the programs I don’t want?
Thanks!

I am almost 100% sure (99.999%) it won't wipe your phone, so you don't need to back up anything. I'm not even really sure how to back up apps (besides syncing) if you're not rooted lol. After you've rooted, you can use Titanium Backup to backup and restore apps if/when you try custom ROMs that require a full wipe. You can also use this app to remove system apps you may not want (Stocks, Setup, etc). Not sure if that's a Donation/PRO feature only, but it exists lol. Need anything else cleared up?
Sent from my Droid Incredible running Myn's Warm Two Point Two RLS4.
Yep, your phone will look the exact same after root, except for the inclusion of the superuser app.
Thanks guys,
I'll give it a shot and see what happens!
I had my phone plugged into my computer before I was able to choose the custom recovery because I have an SLCD. Now all I see on the phone is a black screen and two white lines on the sides. I opened up Unrevoked again and chose the custom recovery but it now says “device */sbin/sh: getprop not found” is not supported at this time.
Any Ideas????
I took my battery out and put it back in and it came back up. I ran it again with the custom recovery for SLCD and it looks like everything is working. Thanks!

Whew, I don't know what would have caused the getprop issue, I'm not that technical lol. I'm glad you got it up and running.

Congrats. Now you might want to freeze all those annoying apps HTC put on the phone. I used titanium backup, very easy.
Hey, I just got a Droid Incredible for Xmas, and want to root it, although am terrified of bricking it and ruining Christmas... I read through the forums, and was wondering, before I try to root my phone using the aformentioned guide, step 4 says "Run Unrevoked 3," which I assume means on the phone itself. When I get to that step will I know what it is talking about?
Second question, while checking if it was an SLCD or AMOLED Incredible, there was no light coming from the screen until I got the first white HTC welcome screen, but after this a bright black screen is stuck between the next HTC white image. Assuming this means I have an AMOLED, but just wan't to make sure.
Thanks!

[Q] Misc. Questions, Flashing to Ginger help

Thanks for taking your time and helping me, I saw you guys(and girls) have done some pretty amazing things here at XDA. I just need some help with getting this Gingerbread ROM to work.
I'm using Supersonic 2.2.1 first off, and using the alter. recovery rom from Rom Manager.
Ok, so I rooted my phone using rEVOked and chose a ROM called Bc-Gingerbread-beta4. I'm not sure of the eact title used, but if anyones faimilar with Gingerbread ROMS, they should know what that is... It was on the EVO ROM page.
So at first, I was using ClockWorkMod Recovery (2.6.*) to try and install the ROM. I eneded up with status 7 ever time, so I tried to upgrade to 3.0.* (newest one) and recieved a error about not being able to flash. No details were given.
I tried flashing to the alternate recovery, and it worked. From their, i (un?)successfully installed the ROM according to the recovery application.
The status bar didn't move past the halfway mark, but i figured it was just how it worked..
Then, I tried to boot into the new ROM. I was on the HTC screen for about 3~5 minutes, then it showed me the android load screen instead of the usual Sprint/4G screen. From their, it was in a constant loop because every 3 to 4 seconds, it would take off the android logo, then place it back. I waited approx. 10 minutes... Nothing. Unfortunetly, the alternate screen doesn't have the option to browse for your nandroid back ups (mine aren't in /android) So i'm left with a relativly bricked phone until I can find a working ROM.
I have a microsd card reader.. so I'm not too terribly screwed, I just need help on what I did wrong, how can I fix it (if im able to), and what Gingerbread ROM I should use. It needs to be relativly stable. I don't care about 4G support, even though its almost everywhere in Atlanta. I'd like to have video rec. if possible. and 8MP support.
If it fits those standards, please, I'd like to hear what the community thinks is a great Ginger ROM.
Also, I'm using Windows. I have the adb shell installed, and im familair with basic-medium level terminal commands.
Edit: I'm going to flash again, using cm_supersonic_18.zip. It says installing update, but it says flash zip from sdcard in the main menu...
Edit #2: apparently it's a Cyanogen mod (#7)
Just keeps looping the android on the skateboard screen... I'm going to figure out how to get back to the clockwork recovery console and -hopefully- get this thing working.

[Q] Major help asap

hey guys the other day i tried to use kernal manager on my rooted evo 4g hoping i could overclock it and it restarted and showed htc evo 4g the black screen viberated then restarted all over so i went into recovery and i have no back ups and i have seemed to erase the stock android system i did wipe data/factory reset and nothing, went to mounts and storage menu and formated the boot system data cache and thats where i probilly messed up i also went to advance and wiped the dalvik and still got nothing
is their anyway i could get it back to normal and hopfully put a rom on it or can i just put a rom>?
Download a rom, put in your SD card (either by turning on USB-MS in recovery or by putting the rom directly on the SD card with a USB reader on your PC), then flash the rom. You already lost all your stuff with the wipes you already did, so just start from scratch.
dude thanks so much i was so scared that i messed it up
Flashing kernels can be a tricky thing. Sometimes you can get away without a wipe, sometimes you do need a wipe before the kernel will start working. And sometimes you get what you're running into, where the whole thing gets hosed and you have to just flash a rom and start over.
Just remember that after a fresh flash that your first boot will take forever.
thanks so much any ideas as a daily driver for a rom
Depends on what you're looking for, honestly. I'm personally a fan of Sense, and I have an Epson screen, so my rom of choice right now is Calkulin's EViO 3 beta: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1060456
If you don't have an Epson screen, or aren't sure, then I would stay away from the current gingerbread Sense roms. Any of the current FroYo roms should be fine. My choice prior to going to Calk's rom was Sprint Lovers. That one is nice and stable, but a lot of people find it too boring and too stock.
I can't speak for any AOSP or CM6/7 roms since I have no interest in them, but I hope that others here can make some recommendations.
ya i love sense and i have a 0004 screen if thats what u mean its the white evo
004 is your hardware version. Unfortunately that's not an indication of which screen type you have. There are currently 2 different screens on the Evo, one made by Epson, and one made by Novatec. There are plusses and minuses to each one, but right now, the leaked gingerbread Sense release has a bug that make is so that screens made by Novatec are always at 100% brightness. You can flash a froyo kernel to fix the brightness issue, but it ends up breaking other stuff like the camera.
here's a post I found that outlines how to find out which type of screen you have: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=12506189&postcount=13
1. Connect PC to Evo in charge/development mode; then adb shell dmesg > evoinfo.txt. Look for "novatec" or "epson" in the txt file
or
2. Download terminal emulator from market, type dmesg, find "novatec" or epson" in the output
or
3. Add HTC Power Widget, change the screen brightness. Instant change = Epson, gradual/fading change = Novatec
i have the epsom bcuz i always use the sense brightness widget and it instantly jumps brightness would u mind helping me put a rom on ie flashing it i would greatly appreciate it i have win 7 and i download the one u recommended but have no idea how to add it. if u have aim and walk me throught it my aim is xxdoaxxspitfire
nvm got it i thought i had to rename it to update
Glad you got it to work. I was just leaving work with my last post so there wasn't any reasonable way for me to help
well have a fantastic day at work thanks so much hey if u play xbox add me its toxic spi7fire cya

[Q] Completed Factory Reset (MIUI) and SDCard format and now soft-bricked!

Hey folks,
Thanks for taking the time to read/assist. I don't typically do these kinds of posts and am at my wit's end!
Phone's Previous Setup - MIUI Gingerbread, Rooted (but with S-ON after the fact).
What happened:
My HTC Incredible finally got to the point of being practically unuseable with laggy behavior and random restarts and the like, so I decided to complete a reset to factory settings or wipe.
I completed my backups using Titanium (apps) and ClockworkMod Recovery (full backup). After this, I went ahead and opened up Settings and directed the phone to complete a Reset to Factory Settings. It ran through the process, rebooted, and came up jelly. While no custom apps were installed (expected), my folder settings on my main home page were saved, along with some previous text messages. I was pleasantly surprised.
From here, I wished to wipe the SD Card so as to make sure it was clean of any residual folders/files that might cause conflict down the road (based on advice from others). So, headed to the SD card part of the settings. Had to unmount the SD card to format, proceeded to do so.
Here's where things went wonky: Despite receiving a confirmation that the SD card format had proceeded, nothing else ever happened. I attempted to mount the card again w/o luck (kept getting a msg that it was now unmounted). Eventually, I decided to go ahead and restart the phone and see if that helps. Big mistake.
From this point forward, the phone refuses to fully start up into any Android ROM. Initially, it hung on the white HTC Incredible splash screen (yes, even w/ giving it an hour+ of time). I tried wiping and reflashing different ROMS over the period of the day yesterday to no avail.
Doing a full recovery via ClockworkMod (from my backup that I made before and copied back onto the SD card via USB) leaves me stuck on the HTC Incredible white splash screen.
MIUI - 2.2.10
Hangs on white splash screen
No go w/ or w/o SD card installed
MIUI - 2.2.17
Loads past white and MIUI splash screens
Instead of loading into Android homescreen, immediately loads up "Encryption" error and directs to "reset phone."
Repeated restart and attempts of resetting phone don't work
No go w/ or w/o SD card installed.
MIUI - 1.12.9
Hangs on white splash screen.
No go w/ or w/o SD card installed.
CM - 7.1.0
Hangs/loops on CM splash screen.
No go w/ or w/o SD card installed.
CM - 6.1.0
Hangs/loops on CM splash screen.
No go w/ or w/o SD card installed.
I looked into HBOOT options, getting PB31IMG.ZIP and PG86IMG.ZIP.img thinking maybe I could try reverting to stock at a friend's suggestion. HBOOT sees the files and "checks" them, even briefly showing a small vertical blue loading bar at the top-right corner, but never attempts to run/update them as I am lead to expect from all the instructions/encounters I've found on the net suggest. The screen info flashes by so quickly, I can barely read it, but I confirmed that it said "checking" and not updating or such. x.x
I considered trying to flash an updated copy of ClockworkMod Recovery, but I cannot do that w/o being able to load up the phone into Android.
I cannot run anything desktop-side, like ADB, as they all require the phone started up and put into USB-debugging mode.
I've looked into and tried all this and more, but nothing seems to be working.
My next idea is to try to forcibly downgrade the phone. Reasoning being that I read that the HBOOT will not try to update if it senses that the ROM is newer than its default settings(?). So, I need a good choice of "old" ROM that I can attempt to install via the HBOOT or CWM Recovery, and verify I have the correct files for HBOOT to try updating/running.
Again, this is a speculative attempt, but I'm willing to try whatever might work! Otherwise, I've got a fancy brick and my well-being on the line w/ no $$ to replace the phone. x.x
Thanks again for reading and hopefully offering some wonderful assistance! Sorry it's so long!
Feel free to ask Qs if you need clarification on stuff.

You need to gain s-off again before flashing with clockwork. How come you turned it back on?
"In a nutshell, S-OFF means that the NAND portion of the device is unlocked and can be written to. The default setting for HTC’s devices is S-ON, which means that neither can you access certain areas of the system nor can you guarantee a permanent root. Furthermore, signature check for firmware images is also ensured by the S-ON flag."
edit:
gain s=off boot into CMW wipe data, and factory reset. Flash a new rom of your choice and then boot. should get you back to a working phone.

The first time my phone was rooted/flashed, my bf did it for me. He used Unrevoked to root it and install CWM Recovery (v2.5.1.2 presently). I recall conversation being that having S-On would be better security with regards to the cell carrier (e.g., good to leave on, bad if off as they can see you rooted). So I agreed to having it put back to S-On, which I understood he then took care of.
Fast-forward a year and he now tells me he didn't actually end up running the other Unrevoked (Forever) tool to put S-On back in place, but that it simply *was*, so he left it that way. o.o;
Keep in mind, I've flashed 3 different ROMs since he originally rooted and flashed, w/o issues.
I pulled up everything to try re-rooting it again (to gain S-Off), but the instructions required having the phone loaded up and in debugging mode, which I cannot do as I cannot start up the phone past recovery in the first place.
Did I miss something that allows it via recovery? Going to check again in the meantime.

actually its better to keep it s=off so this type of situation wont happen. Your carrier cant see your hboot from my understanding on how this phone works. They dont care if you have root or not, unless you are trying to exchange the phone for another one from them or for insurance reasons. With root you only void your warranty on the phone and not your contract or anything to do with VZW. S=off is just a NAND lock, meaning you cant add your own custom recover to the phone, and you are limited to builds that come from VZW themselves (ie the security signature check).
If you ever want to take the phone back to them because its defective or call insurance then you need to remove root and S=on. but thats the only time you need to toggle the NAND lock.
ok so you will need to ruu to stock, downgrade then gain s=off over again:

OMG I may've gotten it!
So I decided to give things another go with attempting to revert to stock again, as at this point, nothing is going to work other than via HBOOT.
I completed another reformat of the SD Card (Fat32) to be on the overcautious side and copied over ONLY the PB32IMG.zip file and restarted into HBOOT.
(Ah.. new user, so not allowed to post the link of where I got it.)
This time, much like before, it scanned, found the file, and did a parsing/loading. However, THIS TIME it actually prompted me to update! I chose yes (Vol+) and let it do its thing.
At this time, I am happy to announce that it actually is back up stock!
Wooohoo! Now to get it back to how I like it again. XD
If nothing else, hope this information helps someone else later on.

You might have lost root if you did the ruu from hboot. to check download the app "super user" from market that will tell you if you still have root or not.
Alright, now that I'm back to stock and runnin' smoothly, I need to figure out what route to take for rooting and flashing. Everyone talks about Unrevoked3, but I've heard there're other newer tools, too.
What would you recommend?
....also, sorry for the weird delay/disjointed/incomplete responses. I keep forgetting that XDA severely limits my posting capabilities. I wanted to say super thanks wolf, for all your help and sticking with me! Your input is appreciated. And yes, I'm pretty sure I lost all root, etc. It is back to "out-of-the-box" stock as far as I can tell.

unrevoked3 is the easiest way. but you will need to downgrade to android 2.2 for the security exploit.

....also, sorry for the weird delay/disjointed/incomplete responses. I keep forgetting that XDA severely limits my posting capabilities. I wanted to say super thanks wolf, for all your help and sticking with me! Your input is appreciated. And yes, I'm pretty sure I lost all root, etc. It is back to "out-of-the-box" stock as far as I can tell.

lol now worries. easiest way to get to the 10 limit is just pad the count in here. ie just say something 10 times and you are good to go.

Good news, I'm on 2.2 stock right now (just checked to confirm). So should be able to just go ahead and run Unrevoked3 then.
Also, the most popular recovery I'm aware of is ClockworkMod Recovery. I found that it's up to version 5.0.2.0. Would you recommend anything else or know of a newer version?
Figure if I'm going to do this, might as well do it right.
