[Q] kernal question - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm running cm6.1.1 right now and OCed it to 1ghz using the cm kernal that it came with.
I was looking into pershoot's kernal, and was wondering what undervolt means?
If anybody has a link to show me about kernals in general, that would be swell.

It does exactly what it says on the tin.
Lets the CPU run off less battery. So in theory you should get better battery life and less likely to heat up excessively.

So even though it's undervolted, I should be still getting a good 1ghz speed on pershoot's?

Correct. You could try benchmarking both Pershoots kernel and a non-uv'd kernel to see the difference at 1ghz.... Thats only if your as anal as me though.
But yes, 1 ghz flys super quick on Pershoot's.

I was able to get around the same quadrant score with both cm kernal and pershoot's. I'll stay with pershoot since it's supposed to give longer battery life.
Thanks again.

Have voltages been tweaked to allow you to run it at these speeds and it still be stable?
Edit: Have you compiled the new wifi driver to go with the kernel as well?
I think it would be best if you just posted it anyway. Those interested will download it, use it, comment, etc. Those uninterested will ignore.
Sounds crazy. How would it effect bacon bits if you have that installed?

Yes I have the wifi driver and no it wont affect bacon bits. It is actually now 1.9Ghz and I'm reaching for the big 2.0. I am using coolbho3's source code and 1.8 worked on 1400Mhz and 1.9ghz is at 1500. It gets a little warm but setcpu profiles are a must

What have the voltages been tweaked to? If the Cpu isnt getting enough voltage and you continue to overclock your gonna begin to get negative effects followed by freezing and rebooting. Not really concerned too much about battery life as much as stability.
EDIT: Oh NVM i see what your saying the Mhz after the 1400 threw me off

Calkulin's Rom is Fast...

Anybody with questions about the speed of Calk's Rom, here it is. Not sure how this compares with other, more modern phones. Quadrant seems a bit out dated at the moment. This is at forced 1.6 ghz with the LoST kernel Exp build. I don't particularly trust the kernel that gets up to 1.8 ghz..

You realize that none of these "fast" roms are actually faster than stock?
All of them use various tricks to improve the sd card score without affecting the cpu/gpu scores. Quadrant is a flawed benchmark susceptible to cheating that way.
None of those "high" scores truly translate to real world performance improvements.

Who gives a damn?
Kernels don't "go to" megahertz. Your hardware can either handle it or it can't.
Get any kernel which allows cpu voltage tinkering, and figure out your best speed.

And yes i wipe all before i flash.

As far as OC and UV I don't bump it real high, as a matter of fact right now I'm running at 1 ghz (stock speed) if I do OC I'm usually running it at 1.3 ghz.
UV usually a decent is -50 under. Much under that and you could run into freezing up.

I'm not too sure what the max temp these phones can handle is, i'm just giving an extreme example of what the phone can handle, i wouldnt reccomend more than 1.6, at the highest, 1.4 is fine for daily use

it's always cool to do that just for testing purposes but oc'ing your phone to that level will only fry out your cpu faster as well as kill your battery life. not really necessary to oc this phone above 1.3ghz and if you want to save battery uv between -25 to -50.
I have been running 1.4 for a while now. I uv -25, except the top two voltages I leave stock. Might try -50 eventually. Battery life is pretty beasty with smartassv2
Sent from my mobile typewriter with tapatalk
Oh that reminds me actually, when i oc to 1.8 (or is it 1.9, forgot what aero's kernel maxes at) i CANNOT run it at smartassV2
Locks up for me past 1.5ish every time when i'm on smartassv2, i have to switch to smoothass for the phone to work well
However, i've had no problems with smartassv2 below 1.5, which is why i run it on my phone

Darkside kernel questions.

So I'm currently running Juggs 5.0 and using the Darkside kernel. First day was rocky but relished it and love how smooth it is. Now am just testing the battery life. Here are much questions... 1) I was using cpu tune for my Faux kernel and used different profiles for it. Since I have Gideons script can I still do that? 2) Do you recommend it since I have this script? 3) I want my phone to not use hardly any battery when at rest or sleep, what's the best way to do this with the info I have given? Also I am using juice defender. Thanks in advance fellas !!

1) Yes but I wouldn't recommend it, its equivalent to having two CPU apps, they'll conflict, so pick one
2) See point one
3) Make sure your phone is deep sleeping, by using CPU spy and betterbatterystats to avoid app wake locks, which keep your phone from entering deep sleep and draining more battery.
For better performance all around (including deep sleep) i recommend undervolting with either faux clock or system tuner. Gideon script can also be modified to undervolt more if you read up on it a little.
As a side note, the general consensus among power users is that juice defender sucks. It drains more than it saves

Yeah I know that but I still don't know a lot about it still. It's more based on how the rom works, and the kernel yes helps with CPU and GPU scores but I noticed his GPU scores are lower than mine, one of the nation reasons I'm still stock. Because it's probably persues kernel and has issues with FPS in real world and quadrant performance.
He probably ran it 1600/1600 on performance or something on those lines
Edit: this is mine stock rooted GPU much better than his, until persues can match this without overclocking the GPU just to get the same performance I do on stock I'm not switching.

Maybe you should consider that you're not the brightest, most experienced person in this thread before talking smack.
Exposing a component to more heat means you are shortening its life, there is no doubt about that. Those with overclocked desktop CPUs often have elaborate setups with overclocking in mind. You can't add a better heatsink, or a fan to your phone. Mobile CPUs, especially, are designed to be efficient at a certain range of clock frequencies. Moving it too far from the norm means you eventually see diminishing returns.
I've fried everything from my first Commodore 64 to my current box, and everything in between. If you think the phone can function at that level for an extended period of time without failure, best of luck to you.

Dude it was part of the whole meaning of rooting and tweaking. Checking different settings for a little bit, testing them and then reverting back to defaults. I will never leave overclocked/ undervolted or vice-versa settings for a whole day... its just part of the fun of tweaking and experimenting with our devices...
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda app-developers app
I am all for overclocking, modding, tweaking, hacking, etc. Breaking **** is the best way to learn. But that doesn't mean you should push your hardware past the point of exponentially diminishing returns, and increased risk of burning your chips out. That is, unless, you have no problem with the very real possibility that you'll need to buy a new phone.
That being said, kudos on "going plaid" with your Quadrant score

But that doesn't mean you should push your hardware past the point of exponentially diminishing returns, and increased risk of burning your chips out. That is, unless, you have no problem with the very real possibility that you'll need to buy a new phone.
That being said, kudos on "going plaid" with your Quadrant score

Im with you 100% thus my paranoia about leaving the tweaked cpu/gpu settings for more than an hour or so... Too "paranoid android"

How is the kernel treating ya? Which one did you flash?

It's more based on how the rom works, and the kernel yes helps with CPU and GPU scores but I noticed his GPU scores are lower than mine, one of the nation reasons I'm still stock. Because it's probably persues kernel and has issues with FPS in real world and quadrant performance.
He probably ran it 1600/1600 on performance or something on those lines
Edit: this is mine stock rooted GPU much better than his, until persues can match this without overclocking the GPU just to get the same performance I do on stock I'm not switching.

I'm stock rooted for this very reason.

Its the Redpill v1.42... I prefer it compared to all the others i used ( stock, perseus, n.e.a.k., note2core). Those results were with stock rom but redpill kernel. Im a fan of omega but today i discovered another Rom (Hawkish extreme series Rom for N7100). I may try Perseus with that rom and see how it treats it...
