[Q] Stuck and need help. - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I tried installing the new Bonsai4all 1.1.13 and may have permanetly messed up my phone but you never know. After installing I tried rebooting and it just sits at the samsung screen when it firsts boots up. I never installed the ext4 mod because I thought that the new bonsai had support for both ext4 and rfs support built in. I tried flashing another rom but no matter what i keep getting a write error at some point. So I figured I would try and odin back to stock but my computer will not recognize my phone. I am running windows 7 64bit and have installed the samsung drivers. I have even tried uninstalling and then reinstalling but with no luck. Any help would be appreciated and I refuse to believe I fully bricked my phone since I can get into recovery and download mode. Thank you for your help.

First, your phone is not bricked if you can get into d/l mode. Second, to run mammon's newest version of his ROM you must be using clockwork v3.x, which by default formats your file system to EXT4. Third, keep trying with Odin. Try different usb ports, cables, computers, etc. You could try a different version of Odin. Bottom line, it WILL work eventually.

I've used ODIN a couple times to return to stock. Last time I used my 64-bit Windows 7 desktop and had problems. I switched to a laptop running the 32-bit version and it worked perfectly on the first try. Any chance you can try a different PC?

Did he include both script languages or something? I was under the impression that he was using the Edify script now.

As far as I am able to tell, the older version of CWM supports both types of scripts (as the EXT4-Formatter.zip used to convert to EXT4 uses an edify script, not the other kind (append?)). There are a few other zips floating around that are already using the edify scripts that work just fine on 2.5.1.0 and .2.
From what I have been able to get from various posts is that CWM 3.0.0.5 will support both rfs and ext4 (may be mistaken, not sure), and makes it easier to convert from one to the other (no preconverting necessary), but will only recognize the newer edify scripts.

problem solved
I ended up using my desktop and installing the Samsung drivers that I found over on sdx and was able to odin back to stock dk28. I just don't understand why my laptop won't recognize the phone when I connect it and just says it can't install the drivers. Wonder what could be causing the problem since I have used odin on it before. Oh well at least my phone works and I ended up just installing the ext4 mod and running bonsai and all is going well.

Yeah I figured it wasn't bricked I just don't understand why the drivers were not working on my laptop anymore since I had used it to odin to dk28 when it first came out. I thought the newest bonsai had a dual kernel so you could flash it whether you were on rfs still or if you had installed ext4.

Is there an update.zip for the DK28 Modem or you have to use odin?

Hey guys I have a quick question. My buddy has the Samsung Epic 4g and was running from store stock DK18 build. He recently updated to DK28 using the leaked update.zip method. So far his phone is working fine with the exception of the gps not working. I dont own a samsung and after reading through all this info im super glad cause I see nothing but problems from what I am reading. Things are so much easier with my OG moto droid haahhahahah. He wants to root his phone and install a custom rom.
But most of the roms I look at say you need the dk28 modem installed first. Was the DK28 modem installed with the DK28 2.2 update zip? Or it wasnt included with that? How can I tell on his phone if he has the DK28 modem? Is the only way to get the DK28 modem on his phone by flashing it using odin? I find it hard to believe that there is no update.zip for it by now. If anyone can help me out with this or point me in the right direction I would appreciate it. Would much rather just find the update zip for the dk28 modem so I dont have to mess around with odin since I dont own a samsung.
There are way to many threads on here regarding this issue so its kinda hard to sort through them all. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
Go to Settings=>About Phone. This will tell you you're baseband version. If it says DK28 at the end you're set...otherwise read on.
I just flashed Bonsai 2.0 and the modem was not included. I used the signed modem update afterwards from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=861341
Without the DK28 modem you won't be able to get a signal through the cell radio. Wifi worked but the device was switching airplane mode on and off every half second. Flashed the modem AFTER the rom...I don't recommend this... and all is well.
I was also coming from DI18 and stock rom with a modified kernel.

Ok ok awesome I was thinking that about the baseband version but wasnt sure so figured I would ask. So he does have the dk28 at the end. Thats good. One less step he has to take. How do you like Bonsai? I was actually looking at that one for him. That will probably be the first one he will try.
One more question. How did you root the phone? Did you use the z4root app and then download rom manager and flash clockwork that way? Or did you use one of these one click root programs that I see in this forum? What do you think the easiest way is for him to get root and clockwork recovery on his phone?
Thanks for all your help Zetter I appreciate it.
The best way to root is to use the one-click. It will give you root, recovery, and the recovery redirect.
Rom Manager will not flash clockwork without a custom kernel and z4 doesn't install recovery or the redirect.

For one, it allowed the use of multiple recoveries. For example, for a short period, many of us were running cwm 2.5.1.0 AND 2.5.1.2 since one only supports rfs and the other only supports ext4. Booting into recovery via the death-grip brought you to 2.5.1.0 and the redirect allowed you to reboot into 2.5.1.2.
I believe the redirect is also what allows programs like quickboot to reboot to recovery mode without using the death-grip.

Awesome thank you for the info Digi. We used the one click root method and now we have root and when holding the volume , camera and power button we go into clockwork recovery 2.5.1.0. Is there a special button or combo you need to hit for the redirector to work? Or it reboots you into the correct clockworkmod automatically depending on what filesystem RFS/EXT4 you are currently using? Sorry to be such a pain. This stuff is kinda new to me since I dont own a samsung. I really appreciate your help though.
Ok I after reading the bonsai rom thread I found the new oneclickroot with clockwork3. So I tried that one now and was able to reboot into clockwork 3.x.x.x
and install the bonzai rom. Had a problem after the install completed. The phone wouldnt boot up just got hung on the black samsung screen. I know in the Bonzai thread it said not to wipe but after the phone hung I booted into recovery and and did a wipe then installed the bonzai zip again and the phone booted up. GPS still doesnt work so that kinda sucks. But I guess its all trial an error. I will keep reading. Thanks for the help.
Is there a way to check on his phone if he has the ext4 filesystem or the rfs. I am guessing since he has cw3 and was able to boot into the new ext4 bonzai rom he converted to the ext4 FS but would like to know if there is a way to check.

Like you said, by installing CWM3 you have automatically converted to EXT4...BUT if you really want to check: from adb you can type 'adb shell mount' without the quotes. Or you can type 'su' (enter) then 'mount' from terminal emulator. You should see EXT4 as the fs type for /system, /data, and /cache.

[Q] Need help with CWM Recovery and other issues!

Hello All,
I have been working with my friends EPIG 4g phone for a while now. The first thing I did was use "superoneclick 1.7" to root his phone. Then he got interested in trying different roms+kernels, so he came to me for more help. Almost all the custom roms I was researching are EC05 based roms, so I looked further into it. For reasons unknown, he is still on DI18 Eclair (must not have got the OTA). I dug on forums and found the zip file that would allow him to jump from DI18 to EC05 (froyo), but I need a custom recovery to install the zip. No matter what I try, I cannot get the phone to boot into CWM recovery. (Tried both from rom manager, and using camera button+vol. down+power combination) I have tried just about everything that I can think of, to no avail.
I have also tried:
Unroot & Re-root using process found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=770388
Wiping all data via factory reset (really wish I wouldn't have, waste of a try)
Tried using methods found here:
http://forum.androidcentral.com/epic-4g-rooting-roms-hacks/34603-clockworkmod-recovery-rom-manager-guide.html
When trying to do anything in the stock recovery, I always get the:
e:signature verification failed errors.
Please bombard me with any and all ideas you guys have. I am currently about to try to manually install the CWM recovery by placing the update.zip file on the SD root directory. IF I can get that part done, I'm confident I will be able to get everything going. Another option I have read from other people's threads that I have not yet used is the Odin revert to stock and then flash some special .tar files. I took a look at Odin and don't remember seeing options for "stock" or anything, so if anyone can point me to a good Odin walk-through, that would be awesome.
PS: Ask me if I have failed to clarify on any aspects of the problem. Forgive me for not including more info on the problem, Ive been through like 8 hours of random stuff while trying to fix this, so Ive seen too much to remember everything I've seen.
Thanks in advance!

Too many words
I kinda fell a sleep in the middle so yeah
If you want to return too stock use odin
If you want to go to froyo from eclair use odin
If you want cw use I've of the one click rooters
Going to cw is just pressing every button that is not on the keyboard
(power + volume up + volume down + camera)

Stock recovery will get you nowhere on this phone, and with all you have tried so far, I believe Odin is the best course of action. Here is a link to the Odin package-
http://www.mediafire.com/file/fn9s5cqkkwyu68d/Odin3+v1.61andepic.pit.zip
Unzip it to a folder on your desktop.
The necessary drivers and instructions for using it are here in the wiki
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Samsung_Galaxy_S/SPH-D700#Odin_Stock_Flashing
Follow the instructions carefully and be sure the drivers are installed before starting. Obviously, wherever it mentions the DI18 tar, you will use the current one in it's place. You can use this one, it's pre-rooted and de-odexed.-
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1021305
That tar file is still RFS file system so you will need to install CWM 3.0.0.6 and boot into it with the 3 finger solute so it can convert the file system to ext4. Package and instructions here-
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=897612
If you made it this far you should be able to install one of the current ROMs you've been shopping for.
Thanks for the responses guys, I will try that out when I get a chance. Might be a while though because I don't see my friend that often.
So I was able to use Odin and successfully flash the EC05 .tar. However, I was unable to flash the Syndicate Frozen ROM that my friend wanted. It seems to fail on the flashing kernel step, some blue text that is large and out of place shows up for a second, and it goes back into the recovery menu. When I try to reboot the phone, it is clear that it did not work (assuming the kernel install is failing). I am going to Re-flash the EC05 for now, but do you guys have any recommendations for ROM+Kernel combinations good for battery/performance? Link me up if you know of any good combo's, but I've researched it a bit myself as well.
Basically, I would like to know what I am doing wrong here. Is the CWM included from that .tar file compatible & ready to flash any custom ROM that I want? Or do I need to use that CWM 3.0.0.6+root that Mattalica suggested? The EC05 was prerooted, so I'm wondering what happens if I use the 3.0.0.6 exploit on top of this root... Let me know guys.

What happend when you rebooted that indicated it was not successful? If you had strange vibrations and a bootloop, that is common when trying to flash these new generation ROMs like ACS and Bonsai. A simple reflash usually fixes it.

The Syndicate one failed as the kernel step was happening, resulting in a complete ROM failure (syndicate frozen tries to install their kernel midway thru the ROM flash). I tried it more than once, with no success. It just kept failing at kernel and only letting me into the CWM recovery (probably had already erased the base ROM?)
I was able to flash Baked Snack 1.6 without trouble and he is going to try that out for now. Interestingly enough, I did try to flash the baked snack "step 2" kernel, which is supposed to be a bit better on the battery life, and guess what happened mid install: the same weird black screen with huge blue text that goes off the screen (I think it says it fails, not sure though).
Here's the kicker on that, the "about phone" section does say that the base-band is something like "baked snack 1.6 step 2", which is odd, but the kernel version section seems to boast the same kernel version number that it had before. This leads me to think that it may have worked, but again, I cannot be 100% sure. If you have any more comments/suggestions, feel free to keep posting. Thanks again for all your help with the Odin TAR stuff, I really didn't feel confident until you confirmed the method.

BakedSnack 1.6 is a RFS ROM and is DI18 based. If you installed CWM 3.0.0.6, it would have converted your filesystem to EXT4. BakedSnack 1.6 does not have kernel support for EXT4. However if you installed an older version of CWM it would explain how ACS failed to install and how BackedSnack 1.6 was able to install and boot.

is it the phone?? flashing problems.

So lemme say first i can over from an HTC and love the way this baby works. i was very active in my HTC and flashed and did a lot of stuff to it, also doing a lot to my brother and sisters phones to. Evo and Captivate. my brothers evo like my HTC wasnt that bad at flashing could just download and go. I had so many problems with getting odin or one click to read my phone i was so upset cause i couldnt get to flashing. WELL now my comp is a champ and working like a charm, my phone on the other hand not so well. I once got SRF 1.0.1 to flash but it was real buggy on me, force closes, browser was screwy. Also Odin flashed SwissCheese but was slow. The reason i Odin flashed it is because no matter what rom i try and flash i get stuck on the samsung screen. even SFR 1.0.1 does it too. I have looked all over for the answer and nothing. I know what i am doing when it comes to these androids and am very good at figuring out the solution, but i am stuck. I am 100% sure i have done everything step by step per the devoloper.... just saying, anyone have a clue? think it could be my phone?
Odin back to stock. I have a video made, click the link in my signature.

2 things, first coming from stock EC05 is screwy to begin with and it is best to do all the wipes. It would be much better to either Odin in an EC05 or EB13 prerooted. Then when you pick a ROM is it EXT4 or RFS? If you pick an EXT4 ROM make sure you have converted to EXT4 somehow first unless the ROM says it will convert it for you. If you try to flash an EXT4 ROM on an RFS system without converting, you will get stuck at the SAMSUNG screen.
Okay well here's a little update... I have tried using 3.0.2.5 many times in the past with the same results. Stuck at samsung screen!! I have made sure to use the flashable rfstoext4 before flashing a ext4 rom, even tho SRF converts for you. I feel like a baffled idiot on this because I have done this so many times on other phones and am very quick to figure out a solution if needed... BUT I AM LOOOOOST I did see a few good suggestions I am gonna try... I am gonna odin a prerooted rom and see.
For ****s and giggles I tried to flash the ONE rom that did work for me SRF 1.0.1 and it worked! But very buggy still. Even a fresh dwnload of he rom will not work as it didn't before. Just the one file I downloaded before as its been the only one that worked. Also I tried to flash SRF 1.2 on top of it and still stuck at the samsung screen.
I am confused as to what is going on. I have tried many different things and to no prevail. I even started to think maybe it is the stock rom I am odin'in to but even flashing over the SRF I had the same outcome....
You think it could possibly be a phone problem?!?!

Did you try to restore a nand backup of your last working configuration? You can install an RFS ROM like RFSplus or one of the Gingerbread leaks. Pull your sd card out and put it into a computer to download and copy an RFS ROM onto it and put it back into the phone and flash.

[Q] Noob modem question

Where can I see what modem my phone is running. I've flashed multiple modems, but because all my cwm attempts have aborted I've used mobile odin. I have no problem with this, just not sure where to see the modem version so I can confirm it's actually there.
I have no problems seeing my rom/kernel versions, just modem.
thanks

Go into settings then about phone and it will be under baseband version. if you updated your modem be sure to also click system updates and update your profile and prl too.
Well that's not good. Still says EK02. I've flashed (or apparently only attempted to flash) EL29 & every one of the FBs & now FC05, both through cwm (always aborts installation, emmc error?) & odin (I thought it was working).
Any thoughts or ideas on what I may be missing or how to fix? (And I have flashed multiple roms/kernels without issues, unless I do something stupid lol)

Make sure to wipe cache and delvik cache mang if that still doesn't work then update it through odin with the modem .tars and the should work fine for you
I was afraid you might say that. Odin doesn't like my phone for some reason. Connects when not in download mode, but refuses to recognize in download mode. I can flash the tar in mobile odin but still not taking. I've reinstalled odin a couple of times, reinstalled the drivers repeatedly, different cables, different USB ports, etc. May have to get Sprint to swap it.
Thanks for your help.

Don't worry bro you'll get it, Odin is picky so be sure to uninstall and reinstall drivers then try again or try a different kernel (depending on if your on a gb or ics rom)

try flashing stuff from your INTERNAL SD card, NOT your EXTERNAL card...that solves many problems
I've actually tried from both internal and external. Same result.
and, I assume you have downloaded it more than once, to your computer, NOT to the phone, and then transferred it to the phone to flash?

[Q] Get back from ics to gingerbread

First of all, sorry if my English isn't so good. So I have a problem here with my gio. It's rooted, at first I had the gingerbread 2.3.3, I upgraded to ICS 4.0.3 beta 8, all good no problem but I am not very happy with this version because my internet connection works very hard from how it worked on gingerbread, and a lot more, sometimes it crashes gonna restart my devices. And I want to get back to gingerbread, I have seen some tutorials and I understand that I have to download the odin software, with the gingerbread driver and must put my phone into the downloading mode, and after I make the settings in odin I must connect via usb my phone, I've done that and the odin won't recognize my phone. I have Samsung kies installed, I have seen that it must be closed, I have been closed, end task but not a chance. I have a pc and a laptop, on both the problem is the same. What do you think it is?
Gonna mention that I am new with the android os.
make sure that you have installed the drivers
Amm do you wanna have the stock ginger? (2.3.3) cause u can flash any other rom like cm, im.supposing that you have instaled cwm. No need to.use odin
Sent from my GT-S5660 using xda premium
I understand. Yes I have installed cwm, so I just copy the file on memory card go to cwm recov mode and apply the zip?
Yep
Depends on if you want back to Gingerbread with an ext4 or an RFS system.
ext4: just flash a Gingerbread ROM with a compatible kernel. Done.
RFS: Use Odin. The stock recovery should be able to reformat /data and /cache properly. If it doesn't there are ways to restore them through a CWM-based recovery.
