Hey fellow forumers , I have some questions about defy before i buy it
By rooting , is it possible to get remove some of the motorola 's preinstalled applications or maybe even without rooting ? Are those applications taking up a lot of storage and ram ? Will it also be receiving froyo 2.2 update ?
Thanks in advance , pardon for my poor english .
Yes, no, yes and yes. :-D
It's possible, perhaps even advicable, but you have to root it. These apps are taking up a lot of RAM (don't find the ROM much of an issue though), unless you flash a non-Blur ROM. Guides for that too here.
I've not taken the time to remove any apps myself, but I think Titanium Backup can help you get rid of the most annoying ones.
Official Froyo is scheduled for Q2, but a custom version is already in the making, in the development part of the forum.

Thanks dude , sorry to ask but what is the main causes for a bricked defy?
I have found root explorer to be the best for removing bloat. Its a paid app but well worth the money. It is best to rename the app rather than removing it, but i have personally copied them to my sd card.
I have bricked mine trying to swap out files incorrectly. Some have had issues with the recovery. But it is really hard to brick it permanently....trust me i have tried! RSD lite is my best friend!
Sent from my MB525 using Tapatalk
rbeier1221, how did you try to permanent brick it? Did you stop a rsdlite flash?
Ha...no, but that might be the way to go!

There are no custom ROMs because:
1) there is still no universal way to back up restore the relevant phone data (Trim Area, or TA)
2) there is still no custom recovery
3) there is no way to unlock the bootloaders for people with SIM-locked phones
4) there is only a certain number of people with interest and means to work on the three prior points.
You should be patient and support the people who are working on it. They'll do great things if we let them work
Yea I am eagerly waiting for some tweeked custom "ROOMS" lol

1) It's possible for now with Omnius - it officially supports TA backup/restore for MSM7x30 platform.
2) It's almost there. Check out Arc section - it works but with graphical glitches, but no files to flash yet...
3) I'm working with Androxyde on TA backup/restore tool in hex format. It'll make my progress on this much easier.
or better yet we should be trying to get xrecovery to work on our phones, doomlord and Z are trying to get it to work on the arc(they might have it working by now) once that can be implemented then we'll be able to do custom roms no problem
1) I cant wait

I'm 90% happy with the stock play rom, but we all know the xda developers unlock more than 110% of a mobile devices potential
hi, i'd like to free some space of my internal storage so i can install more apps, is this could be done by just rooting my device? i've seen some Apk' rooting program, but still can handle mine, some article say GingerBread v2.3.4 can not be rooted :-S , is that right?

Some roms are prerooted, but you may need an unlocked bootloader for some(Just read rom thread), and another way to root is "fastbooting a kernel" like Doomkernel. Just search around. You will find it in Play "Android Development"

Hy all.
I just got a Htc desire hd yesterday with stock android 2.3.3 and i dont know a thing about rooting and hacking android(i had an iPhone 3gs before). So i would like to know how can i get the Sense 3.0 (like the one from htc sensations) on my htc? please someone explain this in a simple way,for dummies like me.
Please if someone want to help me.
Thanks.
Search this forum.. There are numerous guides on how to Root your DHD..
hy thanks
but i need to know the steps .... i dont know anything about this kind of stuff...
Hi,
welcome to XDA! You're generally better off asking questions on the Desire HD Q&A thread.
A stock (as in made by HTC) Sense 3.0 rom isn't available yet (if at all) but there are a few custom roms that dedicated teams have made.
Here's what I did to get 3.0 on my DHD - please note that all these steps may not be necessary but they're just what I did. Also I'm pretty sure they'll void your warranty as I think you'll need to root your phone to get a custom rom on there.
Firstly, read up on this stuff as ignorance = bricked device!
I started by looking at the sticky'd threads over on the Desire HD Development forum here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=765
specifically M_T_M's roll up thread here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=936214
which should contain all the info you'll need to back up, downgrade, root, s-off/eng s-off, flash clockwork recovery, wipe and install a sense 3.0 ROM.
I think you'll probably need to downgrade your phone from 2.3.3 to 1.32.405.6 (I could be wrong, but I don't think you can root 2.3.3 - I'm sure if I'm wrong someone in the know will correct me).
This guide seems to cover downgrading -
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905003
then this guide is great for flashing a ROM etc -
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=11557769
I'd recommend Virtuous Unity for a 3.0 Sense rom, but there are others out there.
Hope that helps
Good luck!
Grim.

No problem, I know it can be hard if you don't know where to start.
1) Yup, it will erase the content on your phone, but shouldn't erase your SD card.
You can back your contacts up to the SD card through the People application:
people-> menu -> import/export -> export to SD card -> choose account to export.
this will save them as a .vcf file in the root of your SD card, you then reverse the process once you have your new ROM installed.
I think the most popular application to use to back-up your apps is Titanium backup (available from the market), however I think this needs root permissions, so you'll likely not be able to use it (if my previous assumption about not being able to root 2.3.3 is correct). I use a different app called Appmonster which I find better for restoring market links (personal opinion), and I don't think this needs root.
I think it's possible to back up your settings using the above apps, however I'm sure I read that it's not recommended, especially when moving to a sense 3.0 ROM.
Your photos and videos should already be on your SD card, however it might be worth using the (PC) sync software to sync them onto your pc first just in case.
I'm pretty sure you will like your 3.0 ROM, I love the one I'm using. however there are other threads that detail how to restore your phone to stock, I'm sure it's more complex than this (I've not tried it) but I would assume you just flash back a stock ROM. If your handset is network branded you could re-flash either the stock network ROM or a stock HTC ROM - I'd definitely read up on this before attempting it though.
Good luck!
cheers,
Grim

THIS IS NOT TRUE, the desire HD will NOT receive Sense 3.0 a good example of this...http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/14/htc-sense-3-0-will-only-support-sensation-evo-3d-flyer-and-new/
Not officially at least, XDA is full of partial sense 3.0 ROMS, and I'm sure will be quickly growing with more and more full sense 3.0 ROMS
htc does however, state, they may try to work in a few htc sense 3.0 components into some of the other devices.
Thanks button is aways appreciated!

Dont do it official 2.3.3 sucks... and to downgrade to froyo in the future you will have to S-OFF and flash RUU which might be too hard for some people.
Either stay with Froyo or Root and use custom ROM's, trust me.

What is bullsh*t in what he is saying?
I have loads of people who wants to get away from the official gingerbread, because it s*cks on the danish android forum... Maybe some people thinks its fine, but most people who are trying it, thinks that it s*cks and they want to either go back to Froyo or get a custom ROM, which isn't easy with the official Gingerbread...
So please explain why you are saying stuff like that !!

Not easy eh, you just have to go to revolutionairy.io, click to download the program, fill in your desires serial number, you get code, run downloaded program, enable usb debugging on desire, fill in the code and the program does the rest for you.... Yeah really hard....

Didn't really wanna get into the argument but firstly, I have seen many people do the update.. and then their phone didn't even boot after it.. so well done HTC for releasing a possible phone bricker (since you can't do jack all if that happens with this RUU), You get less space on the GB update compared to Froyo (123mb vs 134mb) and there have been a few bugs reported..
HOWEVER...
You get improved battery life (by quite a margin apparently), The phone runs q lot smoother, you get the fastboot feature and better (stock) A2SD.

This argument is invalid, as you can move to SD card A LOT MORE apps and data.

What you want to do with your phone to get you started is this..
- install clockworkmod recovery (This will be your safety net from bad flashing(uploading new roms))
- root your phone.
- start flashing! (WARNING: now, be careful not to flash any rom other than the T-Mobile t989 model or AT&T skyrocket model roms. If you flash any other roms besides these, you will brick your phone (say bye bye! to your phone).
Good Luck!

I use ROM Toolbox quite frequently. I have never updated my ROM through ROM Toolbox though, I just use the other features it has to offer. Before you start messing around too much take some time the read the beginners guides and learn how the Defy handles various mods. It is difficult to brick a Defy especially if you are well informed. Only tweak things in ROM Toolbox if you understand what you are doing otherwise leave it alone until you have learnt the ins and outs of your Defy. From my personal experience, ROM Toolbox has never caused me any problems...

thank you, one more thing: do i have to do anything to the boot menu or install stuff like 2ndinit?
MB525 (really laggy)
To flash a ROM from stock you need 2ndinit. If you are already on custom ROM bootmenu is already installed and set up to use
