[Q] Unbranded?... Or not ? - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey,
Basically i got a DHD on a orange contract and decided to root and stuff, and flash RUU 1.72.405.3 stock, but after trying a different sim the phone didnt allow it, does this mean i wont receive updates from HTC ?... or orange cos i dont have their ROM anymore... Please someone enlighten me

You have to buy an unlock code as Orange tend to SIM lock their handsets. The device should update regardless as it can do it over Wi-Fi

(Q) Remove Simelock

I wanted to know if it is possible to remove the simlock form a T-Mobile (Austria) HTC Desire on your own.
Or do I need to use a online unlocker like htccode.com
I have read that its easier or cheaper when you have an older device because the unlock codes are well known.
You could contanct your carrier directly and ask them for it, they should give it to you although they might ask a small fee for giving you the code ... same as using an online unlocking site ... as the desire has been around for a while now the price shouldnt be too steep ... the only factor that you might want to consider is how long you have had the device, some carriers will only provide the unlock code after a certain period of time. I am not sure what t-mobile policy is concerning this.
Its always worth a try contacting your carrier first before you attempt anything else.
normaly they just unlock it after a year or so but then its almost for free
maybe its possible to ask another provider for unlock?
isn't it possible to flash the radio from a lockfree device???
You can flash another radio but i dont think that would remove simlock otherwise the need for sites to provide unlock codes wouldnt be there as everyone would just be able to root and flash another rom and then one of the newer radios that get released and are provided here on xda.
I know that there is a radio s-off tool over at the DHD forum that manages to obtain sim-unlock ... but they dont flash a new radio to do this and as far as i am aware this isnt possible yet for the desire.
I am by no means an expert and i would be more than happy if flashing a unlocked radio would provide sim-unlock! Hopefully there is someone in the forum that has more insight than me into this
another method would be to get access to the unlock codes
hope there is a way to onlock it somehow
Here in the uk you can get the simunlock code for £20 from the carrier. Orange (who recently merged with tmobile) still asks for £20 for older phones (i wanted an unlock code for the original HTC Touch and HTC Touch HD and they told me it was £20 for each handset so i told them to piss off!). Try getting a code online (it usually cheaper than getting one from your carrier + you get one nearly instantly, where'as carriers have to contact HTC for one so it can pottentially take longer) if that doesnt work for you contact your carrier. Also note that if you have a custom rom/rooted you may encouter problems like I have (I have a code but cant use it and am looking for the original orange ruu which doesnt exist)
So is it possible to unlock with the stock rom, and then flash anotherone? or do i have to stick with the stock branded rom????

Once unlocked you should be able to flash any rom..Rom shouldnt be involved at all
Nice, the desire from t-mobile would cost 94€ plus 20-40€ for online unlocking. still sounds like a cheap htc desire ^^
guess its the same unlocking thing with desire hd.

Sounds good!
The phone being sim-locked has no effect on flashing custom roms etc.
Hence unlocking the phone will make no difference!

[Q]How do i know if my phone is unbranded[Q]

As above, how do I know?
I bought the phone from TMobile Direct UK, I got it pretty much the day it was released, it shows no signs of Tmobile branding but how can i be certain?
I also have downloaded the zip file of android 2.3 if i update manually will the phone be able to pick up signal despite the OTA not being officially released in the UK yet?
Sorry for the noob questions!
if you try and flash the gingerbread RUU and it works then you are not branded and yes you will still get signal
Do i need root access to achieve this? and what are the chances of making my phone a paper weight?
i was very tempted to do it, yesterday. I booted into recovery and decided i'd wait for more info from HTC who seem to be treating us Uk folk as second class citizens
You don't need root, If you install with the RUU it will either work or it wont, you won't brick your phone, just plug ur phone into ur pc, you need to have htc sync and/or android sdk installed, select htc sync from the pop up message on ur phone and run the RUU
I think i'm too noob and should probly wait for HTC!
you might aswell tbh, gingerbread is being pushed to random phones as we speak, shouldn't be long till everyone gets the ota
yea i know, i'm just concerned that my phone might be branded and i have to wait for tmobile which could be significant wait.
and franky with all the bugs in this version of FroYo it's getting quite irritating.

Actually if you read the threads it seems branded phones are getting the update first.
To answer your original question, when you turn the phone on (from off), do you get a T-mobile screen? The answer is the answer, as a guide.
Nope i don't, i just get a HTC Splash screen.
I tried to insert another sim however (vodafone uk) and it asked me for some sort of 8 digit code.
Could be either SIM lock (the SIM card itself is locked) or the phone is locked to your network (doesn't have to be branded to be network locked).
Check the software number (settings -> about phone -> Software Information) on the phone.
Mine Desire HD with Android 2.2.1 is 1.72.405.3 and doesn't have any T-Mobile splash screen interestingly was primed to connect to t-mobile as there was a little piece of paper which said at the network selection screen choose next despite NO network being selected and T-Mobile not being one of those in the list?
Anyway I believe the 405 bit indicates its an htc (i.e. unbranded) build. The Vodafone uk builds have 161 here instead and my wifes desire that does have a t-mobile splash screen shows software version 2.12.110.4 with android 2.2 installed

[Q] HELP!!!!

I have a HTC One X, i have unlocker bootloader etc & installed LeeDrOiD One Xtreme V6.2.0, everything works, but, my phone is on Orange, but i was told installing a custom rom would allow me to use another sim (T-Mobile), but when the phone reboots after install the custom rom, it says network locked & will only accept an Orange sim.
Is there any custom rom / stock rom that i can use to get around this??
You need a SIM unlock code - whoever told you otherwise was wrong

[Q] Can you help me unlocking to have HOX working on another provider / operator ?

Hello,
I bought a second hand HOX last week. It was sold to me as unlocked from operator SFR (Vodaphone France, or CID VODAP203).
I bought an unlocking code from an internet shop, tried it, didn't work... I went into a shop specialized in unlocking phones they could not make it provider free...
So I went on to this forum. Plenty of nice things, and as I already rooted an Android tablet from TOSHIBA (FOLIO100), I tried a few things.
It appears that my phone is rooted. When I boot in bootloader it says "UNLOCKED", and it is also S-OFF!!! I am able to change the CID as much as I want, and I have set it to "11111111". As such I was told on a french forum that any SIM Card from any provider should work, but it doesn't...
I have been able to install Jelly Bean from one of the ROM developpers, thinking (and this is where I am a noob) that I will clear the part of the system that tells it is locked to one provider... Of course it didn't do anything more, or different than telling me it doesn't work on any provider.
I went back to stock from Vodaphone France, and came to you in order to get some instructions or link to have on working on another network than the vodaphone one...
Thanks in advance for your help,
Alain
First off, it's great you have an S-OFF handset. You are lucky about that.:good:
On the other hand, unlocking bootloader doesn't have anything to do with SIM locks. So, whatever you did (as you experienced it yourself) doesn't work.
I suggest you search over here, because I know for sure there is a way to unlock SIM lock on HOX. I didn't have to do it, as mine was already unlocked (or SIM free, I can't tell now).
Don't worry, you'll find the way, just be patient.
A bientot!
Yeah everyone told me it was great to have it S-OFF, although I don't know what it can do for me... I guess this would be great for developpers ?
I hope I won't have to go through several unlock code providers...
S-OFF is giving you advantage in being able to flash any ROM, any RUU, any HBOOT, any radio... Good not only for developers.
Back to topic - I suggest you visit some mobile phone service, and pay ONLY after they finish the work. I guess there are whole lot of frauds online,, that would take you money for the "unlock code", and not care if it doesn't work.
I repeat, be patient, and keep searching. Here's what I found (you can do the same search yourself):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1654075
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=25341694&postcount=71
it cost me a whole £2.79 to get mine unlocked.
I bought the code from ebay inserted an un supported sim and entered the code when asked. That's the main reason actually why I've stuck with HTC they are so easy to un lock

Mate, nowadays most phones are unlocked through pw.... code. Usually, you get it for specific handset (IMEI and operator), and just type it in as you did.
BTW, Samsung Galaxy SIII is even easier to unlock - by an apk from Google Play Store.
Hello,
I went through one of Unlock Code providers that [email protected]|-|oR provided me through his links...
I had the exact same unlock code as the one I got in France... that doesn't work. But the guys were really professional, in reimbursing my money as they could not unlock my phone.
The strangest thing is that they asked me if the phone is rooted, and said that this is why I cannot SIM Unlock, because it is rooted... I reverted by to stock, and re-locked the phone but the result is still the same, it stays stuck to SFR...
I hope a solution will come out in the form of an application such as the one for Galaxy III, it looks so easy to do.
Have a good evening,
Alain
Hi my phone was branded by orange and obviously had a simlock what did with my hox and many others before is:root the phone ,get recovery, then flash custom rom and all that branded garbage with simlock is gone.I've done it before with galaxy S,S2,now with my hox. Don't never ever buy any codes online.

Hello,
I already did that, (root, flash customer ROM), but simlock is still here... only thing I didn't change is recovery, but it is 5.8.xxx (aka I think it is the latest).
Can you guide me rapidly in return ?

SIM unlock is totally separate from rooting.

HTC One X won't accept sim unlock code

I have had two companies give me the same unlock code which does not work. Is it a problem with the phone or a problem with the code?
Both say factory reset the phone but this has some issues I think, sometimes I get a red triangle or it reboots very quickly without resetting from the rom.
Phone is sim locked to Three UK (who have stopped fixing the phone directly and HTC won't look at it as its been boot loader unlocked)
Can anyone help with this if so, give full instructions and files needed. Thanks in advance.
P.S. it would be nice if a debranded rom could be installed.

ARe you on STOCK rom and stock recovery. If no go to full stock
I had the same problem on my One X locked on Orange Romania. It seems some GSM operators change the factory unlock codes. The only way to unlock it would be to have a buddy working at the GSM Operator or wait until the phone gets out of contract. I was unable to unlock mine.
yes I'm on full stock rom.

OK so I have got the code from Three UK and it is the same as the the others and does not work.
Does anyone think it is because the boot loader has been unlocked?
HTC support chat reckon thats the problem

It shouldn't, I believe I had the same problem but I was on AOSP, I had to put a stock ROM on for sure.
It could be worth locking it to see though, it's not the biggest pain in the ass!
If no joy, Im out of ideas... sorry mate!
Good luck

My phone has this stock Rom already on it.. I would have to try putting another stock Rom on it. It it possible to put a standard unbranded stock Rom on it instead of HG3?
As far as I know ofcourse you can
OK I have put another H3G stock rom on and this does not work either.
After looking into this further I have found somewhere that if the phone is a replacement one or something was changed from manufacturer and providers with regards to databases for unlock codes then the one provided may not work.
Well my phone went into the service centre and they fixed it but stated after testing they decided to change the mainboard. I suspect because it was originally a CID 1111111 with S-OFF(unbranded as HTC described it) as it was delivered first day they came out. Rush job to get to market and didn't get branded to H3G_001 and S-ON I suppose.
Anyway I suspect that because the main board has been changed the the unlock code has also changed and not been documented or changed on the database for the codes. So they are providing me with the original code not the new one and the letter for the fix state IMEI code previous and new the same, so they must have just reprogrammed that and forgot about the unlock code.
Is there a way to read these off the phone, NVR or something?
I am with Orange or EE and I have tried to flash a stock rom with stock recovery and relocked bootloader and nothing has worked. I have paid 2 companies for the unlock code which is the same code and nothing works I am so frustrated might have to leave htc. This is ridiculous I am on 3.16.61 and my cid is orang001

Just to kick this up I've had the exact same problem (this time with t-mobile) 3 companies and EE all with the same code, all refused by the phone.
Heart breaking really.
Is there no hardware method to get the code or an alternative sim unlock out there?
