I'd be curious to know whether the thing that occurred with JPC on sim locked phones is still happening with this firmware - the product code changing and the phone asking for a network code. I really don't want to root my phone and go through the file copying again - I like it nice and stock-y.

If you pinch-zoom in the applications menu this is now smooth =)
edit:
That was only true until I installed apps and had 5 pages of apps
First impressions best 2.2 out there at the moment. No lag, very responsive mind you not downloaded many apps at the moment. No market missing apps.
I find 2.2 is hardly as exciting as what people make it out to be.

For someone that uses flash 99% of the time on the web, 2.2 is a gift from God himself.

JPH After 3 Hours Review:
Zero issues so far for me. I'm using the APK lagfix. Everything is nice and snappy (with and without the lagfix, although the lagfix seems to makes it better).
GPS seems to get an accurate lock very quickly indoors. (Started up maps, it found the nearest cellphone tower instantly with a 1km radius or something, then found my location perfectly after ~6 seconds. Going to street view once it had my location took my directly outside my house. Not the best GPS test ever, but it worked as well as any other GPS I've ever seen for that simple task.)
Compass seems to be as flaky as ever. This might be a hardware problem with my phone though, since the compass has always been flaky.
Blacks in videos seem as good as ever, and it played a few video files I gave it without issues.
Google market worked without issue, and wifi/hsdpa worked well. No issues with sdcards or anything like that either.
Internet browser is the best I've seen it, with flashing loading and playing smoothly without affecting speed on the rest of the page. Full page engadget with flash ads along the top and right side scrolled very smoothly after loading fully.
Games work the same that they've always worked (zero change, there aren't any games out that tax the GPU yet.)
I'll post a further review after using it for 24 hours or so.
Sorry to disturb your happyness and the overall enthusiasm
But.
Similar to JPC there is still an great Problem or Bug.
As JPC, JPH also dont sync tasks and appointments that are created with another app than the built in stock calendar
This is (for me, and for everyone who want to use the Galaxy seriously for Buisiness and Task planning) an absolutely bad behaviour.
I use Jorte and at first Quick Addroid for adding and editing Tasks. Because the Stock Calendar is to poor in Functionality and not very comfortable.
So if i add an Task with e.g. Quick Addroid, it appears in Device in all installed Calendar apps but is not synced with Google.
If i then edit and save it in Stock Calendar, then it will be synced.
Maybe, it belongs to changes in the code in Froyo, that ar not compatible with not samsung apps. Maybe the programmers have to fix it in their Software.
But also maybe that it is an Bug and Samsung have to fix this.

To be honest, I doubt this is a dealbreaker for 99% of people.
I think it would be classed as a 'minor annoyance'! As far as I know, syncing (google integration in general) has changed a bit in 2.2, so it's probably the app that has to be updated. I could be way off here though.
Scrolling trough the Touchwiz icons in the menu is very sluggish here. Eclair was way smoother. Is just me?

Nope, it isn't just you. I've done factory reset and it's the same.
I knew it isn't so good when I saw that the boot animation was slow and sluggish.

Maybe you´r right.
But this is my experience and my oppinion.
So far, so bad.
If this is (and i think so, as you) an problem of the apps, that ar not compatible with Froyo, then i hope they fix it asap.
For me is the proper sync of all Data and tasks absolutely mandatory. And so i have to downgrade (once again) to JM8
Very bad.
Much more because i really appreciate and like the new Functions in Froyo.

Is WiFi Router working for you? I just get on H icon in notification bar upload arrow highlighted, download arrow stays gray all the time and theres no connection on PC. On USB tethering i get few pings nicely and then connection is broken for few seconds. I have to try this with other FW, maybe it's my provider fault but maybe you have simmilar problem?
Well...then , not worth upgrading from JM8 , i guess
Uhhh, theres also problem with compass and calibration. Every phone restart they are changing to default which is bad and compass after reboot always shows that theres wrong magnetic field and it shows wrong directions.

Yes, working WiFi Router.
Going back to JM7. Samsung engineers and programmers are a bunch of monkeys.
GPS, FM MONO!!!, LAG, SLUGGISH SCROLL, mehhhh
Never had good experiences with Samsung products and support... they only want to sell, get OUR money, and then tell their customers to screw themselves.
I will update this thread as I found issues.
1. Middle of downloads the phone turned off and refused to switch on. Taking the battery out enabled restarting the phone again.
2. Despite of master reset/factory reset the phone is really laggy. Freezing applications made Defy very responsive but under 2.2.2 it appears no difference at all. (Second factory reset seems brought back somme life to my phone now...)
3. Definitely something is causing an annoying delay at startup even though the phone appears to be ready to use.
4. I have noticed once after a restart the capacitive buttons didn't light up for 1-2 minutes even though I was using the phone. The LauncherPro is installed and I'm suspecting that is the culprit here.
5. Once a number is dialed the phone locks itself. This is rather inconvenience when you need immediately use the key pad to select options. (20 June 2011)
Guidelines - 20 June 2011
I decided to write a guideline for Defy users. The information provided here have already been mentioned by others but normally not in one place. Please follow the steps below every time you flash a new ROM.
1. Master Reset (Whether you like this step or not this is required to do. Imagine upgrading a windows machine, it would be simply a mess in most cases. Any pro users would tell you always to do a clearn install. The same principle with Android applies)
2. Discharge the battery (It seems flashing a ROM messes up the battery calibration. Drain the battery to the point it won't boot then recharge it from the wall socket)
3. Avoid Restoring Apps (Only if is a must. Since Android 2.2 is different to 2.1 many apps might not work very well with the same settings restored from 2.1. Some vendors also offer different version for Android 2.2 or higher. Installing from market is best practice)
4. Avoid using widgets (They are simply battery eaters. Avoid them if they don't provide useful functionality to you)
5. Don't trust all vendors (Many apps placed on Android Market is written by programmers with no experience at all. A badly written app not only drains more battery but also takes up more precious RAM than it should. The less RAM you have, the slower the phone performs)
6. Don't keep large number of emails in your inboxes (They simply take up more memory)
7. Charge your mobile from wall socket when you can. It really does make a difference and also a recommended method by Motorola.
8. Put the Mobile Network to 2G when you can. It does save considerable amount of battery.
9. Switch off the phone once per day for 30 seconds before switching it on again.
Any chance to get hands on SBF for this release

I notice on my handset (UK T-Mobile eclair) that the capacitive buttons sometimes dont light up when holding the phone landscape. I think there is a light sensor somewhere which detects the ambient light and adjusts the capacitive button lighting.

That will get you the motorola update software.
During the update the .sbf is downloaded. We need to get the sbf, however it is deleted once the update has finished. I think this happens when the motorola software asks to "reboot phone, connect usb and verify update".
Please, if anyone does the update make sure to find the .sbf file and copy it somewhere safe before the update is verified. Then post to xda of course

Thanks for that. I can actually reconfirm the issue. Last night when I was setting my alarm, with no lights in the room, I noticed once again the capacitive buttons' led were off. I was helding the phone in portrait and I know for sure this problem wasn't there in 2.1 because I always set my alarm after I turn the lights off (Bedroom's). When I press the Home Key to come out of the Alarm app the capacitive buttons lit up again.

If the msu is compiled by Motorola then I'm sure you won't be able to upgrade. The .msu can contain many other smaller installers that can do all the checking, exactly the way the update program does. Your only solutuion is to revert back to Motorola's stock ROM and give it a try.
Two more very annoying Defy/Froyo issues:
1) You can't disable the lockscreen anymore, so prepare for a lot of annoying swiping. Yes, you can get rid of the slider with an app called "No Lock," but this will also disable your security lock (pin code or pattern) which leaves your phone wide open.
2) The new gallery has more eye candy but less functionality, and it got slower too. If you open the folder list you can't read long folder names anymore. Is there is a way to run the old 2.1 gallery on Froyo?
I found the gallery the worst bit. So poor, I can't believe they let it go out like that. Runs like a dog.
I feel embarrassed for Motorola. Or I would if they were not working hard every day making their great hardware under-perform!
Seriously what a phone once CM is on it!

As far as I'm concerned Motorola has degraded the phone and I'm not too sure if that is legal or not. I'm referring to the apps Motorola developed such as the video player and the gallery that you pointed out, not the Android itself. The additional Task Manager that was shipped with 2.1 in US is a welcome.
I have found my defy is performing slower, unless those claim Defy performs better with Android 2.2 has some settings that I don't. I ended up installing SetVSel to speed thigns up. It seems to me I'm getting 1/4 less juice out of my battery. I can reconfirm it once I play music on it for a couple of hours.
Not wanting to sound negative all the time, here are some positive things I found so far. I'm very happy with this update because now I got all my emails working on my handset which was important to me which missed the feature for the past 6 months. The browser appears to work very smoothly in most cases. I haven't used the Tasks app yet but that is another welcome addition as I always have a need for such features on portable devices. Other positive things about Android is to thank google not Motorola anyway. The slightly improved dialer worth just mentioning about it.
If Motorola refuses to give us Gingerbread then I hope they provide an update to fix some minor issues that either annoying or impacting the user experience soon enough.
I gotta say I'm pretty surprised about all the issues people are facing with the Froyo update everywhere. I had the french update installed which was one of the first available in Europe before moving on to the leaked 2.3.3 and it was smoother than ever. No bug at all except for the space touch getting a bit crazy while typing a text a few times. I didn't have many applications installed. A few people mentioned the update's fine as long as you don't have much installed on the phone but it starts getting extremely laggy when you keep installing more and more applications. After a factory reset there shouldn't be any lags though !

QuickPic would be the best gallery app if it would let us change the grid size (the thumbnail previews are too big now) and if it had "all photos" and "all videos" views. Unfortunately QuickPic only does folders.

Thank you for your post. In my experience there was a noticeable performance difference between 2.1 and 2.2.2 before a single application was installed. One theory to why some people are happy with the performance and others are not could be down to different components used in Defy. No one knows for sure if all Defy around the globe use exactly the same components or not. As you pointed out installing apps appears to effect the performance so we can conclude those that are not experiencing performance decrease are not power users.

I am confused, all my photos and videos are in folders anyway and all the previews load like lightning so i fail to to see the problem, it is better than any default gallery whichever way you look at it.
Anyway only issue i can find with the retail 2.2 is how low highest screen brightness setting seems to be, the display is really hard to read outside now.
If you have a hundred pictures scattered over ten folders, would you want to tap into those folders one by one to browse all your photos?
Just like there's a unified inbox for mails from many accounts so you don't have to jump from one mailbox to the next, the stock gallery has a unified pictures view (all pictures in one grid) for all your folders.
If you want to swipe through lots of pictures from a bunch of different folders, having them all in one grid beats having to open all the different folders one by one.
If QuickPic would have the same unified picture view and custom picture grid sizes I would throw the stock gallery out. While QuickPic is working on it (are they?) I'll keep both apps.
The problem with the capacitive buttons that not lighting up is worse than I thought. It happens all the time, it doesn't light up and the only way to make it to work, when it gets really bad, by locking the phone (power switch) and unlocking it again.
The battery life noticeably shortened after the update. What I have done today was to completely discharge the battery to the point it doesn't turn on. Recharged it fully again without turning it on and from the wall socket. I'll report back if there was any improvements on Monday.
I also uninstalled VSel and set it to default CPU speed again. Despite of freezing so many apps and services the start up is really slow and I really feel the lag with the phone.
Another Defy/Froyo bug:
Dial *#*#4636#*#* to get into a service menu. From there battery_history/network_usage would tell you network traffic per app since last boot/unplugged/all time.
In Eclair all data was counted. In Froyo it usually doesn't count anything.
Hello Guys
Let's share the bugs that everyone experiencing with the new stock JOP40C Android 4.2 for Galaxy Nexus
I'll go first
I have a problem when in a call the phone keeps doing a weird vibration and once i done the call i find the phone on the homescreen and have to go to the notifications menu to hang up
the other issue is randomly force close for the launcher and some apps
the camera is very laggy when rotating from landscape to portrait
anybody experiencing those issues ?
Ok guys anybody experiencing random reboot on the stock android 4.2 Galaxy Nexus
You can star this for Google to fix : http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=39912
I am not. Also, and unrelated, I'd like to point out the redundancy of your title. Android 4.2 issues on, say android 4.0.4 would be revolutionary, but as you've directed this... Anyways, did you update ota, or flash the image manually? I've read of many issues from the image flashes prior to ota, that I haven't experienced at all since my ota on my drive home.
In stock browser in full screen mode i'm having a weird effect on loading bar on top, don't know if thats supposed to be like that or not.. just strange and sometimes the adress bar becomes bugged strange behavour
Yeah you might wanna reword that title...
Anyway, this update SUCKS!!!!!!! I was trying to be positive about it... Focusing on the cool new stuff... But then that shifted to at least neutral with the crappy changes.... But now this just sucks!!!!!!!!! I just got my first launcher FC EVER!!!! On my galaxy nexus.
No root, never flashed, been stock all the way on this phone just like any regular user. I used to root on my tmobile g2 but decided to keep my gnex all stock.
So what he hell!?!?! Force closing stock launcher!?!?!? Are you freaking kidding me?!? This update is turning into a total joke, its not funny google! Your pulling anAPPLE move on your most loyal customers(nexus customers!)
EDIT: this is a rant.. I was pissed at how badly 4.2 has screwed my phone up. But no i didnt mean the part about being as bad as apple..
I do think 4.2 sucks though. Especially compared to 4.1.2, in my experience they seemed to have sacrificed new features and "style" over stability with 4.2

"the camera is very laggy when rotating from landscape to portrait" --> Yes, this is extremely annoying.
And also I find that when the camera shot in landscape mode, about 10% of the upper and lower part of the viewfinder are cropped (i.e. the things you actually shot are more than what you saw in the camera app)
1). I don't have problem with phone call
2). Yes, launcher FCed! But only happened once after first reboot after flashing factory image.

No, just needed to rant
Plus the fc had just happened like 5min before i posted that. It was weird... I was browsing here on chrome, then pressed the home button and tried opening the launcher, and it got stuck loading for like 10sec... Then fc'd. Soo i tried again and it got stuck again and fc'd. Third time it finally worked.
I expect these things on rooted devices or custom launchers... But on stock its just sad, especially when it's never happened before the ota.

GNEX 4.2 default browser
Hi
Really hope someone can answer this for me, I've got a stock GNEX just got 4.2 by deleting my Google Services Framework cache and hitting update. Everything seems to be ok, but I still have the stock (blue icon) browser, I thought the default browser is chrome on 4.2. Also I don't seem to be able delete it, no biggie just annoying to have an app that I'm never going to use.
Anyway to remove it manually without rooting etc..
Many Thanks in advance to anyone that can answer this
Only issue I've noticed so far is the camera rotation is indeed very slow on my phone too.
Now, in 4.2, every notification makes my phone vibrate. This doesn't happen with earliers versions. I don't know if it is a "new feature", but I don't like it.

According to Google : Chrome is not part of the AOSP but for the new devices such as Nexus 4,7,10 it's the default browser but old devices like Galaxy Nexus i guess for now the default browser will be the Android Browser , who knows maybe with next major release of Android that will change
As for how to delete the default browser you need root privilege to delete the app apk from the system apps using something like Root Explorer
I had three soft reboots already since yesterday (at least that I noticed, maybe more while I wasn't looking). This is a clean install (flash_all.sh from the factory image).
To hell with it, I'm going back to my beloved CM10.
This is based on the work from the Original thread and the original thread link from that post. All I did was package it into an Xposed module so you don't need to flash a particular version to get the short delay. I have only tested this on the international stock odexed ROM, but it should work on any ROM with the stock Samsung keyboard. If it doesn't work, please send me a copy of /data/xposed/debug.log. It's super simple, so I don't expect problems. I'm running the multi-DPI keyboard mod as well, and it works fine.
Installation is like any Xposed module, so see the Xposed thread for info on how to use it. Once installed, it should show up as a module in the Xposed installer app. Just check the box to enable it and reboot. You should be good to go after the boot is complete. Please be sure your Xposed install is working. Try using one of the other mods to make sure before reporting bugs with this module. The setup is pretty simple, but there are a few steps to getting it going. Once I get some reports that it's working, I'll post the source to github. I just don't want to push out source that doesn't work for anyone other than me.
I use that module for Xposed in my Galaxy S4, and I have a question: is that mod correctly work on another device than Galaxy Note II? In my phone there is no autocorrection, and delay is not short. Is any possibility to further decrease the time?

I have only tested it on a Note2 and Note3. It worked for the Note3 without any changes. The S4 may well use a different keyboard app as the Note keyboard has a number of options for the larger screen. This mod never did anything with auto-correct, only the keyboard long-press delay. Going much lower will break some other features, or just make them really hard to use.
Trying it now on my note 2, key board feels snappier but I'm still testing it, question if I ever want to go back to original, what arte the steps to go back?

You will need to edit the source code and rebuild the module as I didn't think anyone would want to configure it like that. See the link below for the source.
I tried this on my Galaxy Note 3, and now the keyboard is missing the shortcuts. Anyway to get the shortcuts back on my keyboard? I already uninstalled this tweak, and I tried a factory data reset, and the Samsung keyboard still has no shortcuts.

This mod doesn't change anything I can think of that would affect that. I tested it on a TMO US Note3 with stock software and it worked fine. Modded ROMs might have compatibility issues with it as they may have changed the code I'm taking over. As I understand it, the shortcuts are handled by CSC settings. Have you recently installed anything that could mess with those? A data wipe won't affect CSC, as it lives on the system partition. I believe there was an issue similar to this with Wannam breaking wifi calling due to CSC mods, as one example. Even an update to another app could have done it. It's hard to say.
If you want to get it back to stock, the only way I can think of would be to restore the stock CSC. The simplest way would be to wipe system and re-flash the ROM. Then install things one at a time to look for what might be messing with CSC settings.
The code is about as simple as an Xposed module can be, it takes over one method in the keyboard class and tells it to use a shorter delay. The original method is a one-liner, as is mine. It's literally "return 200;".
Here's a direct link to the code: https://github.com/travistabbal/Xpo...SamsungKeyboardShortDelay/ShortDelayMain.java
I have the At&t Note 3, so I don't have any custom roms. The only other app I have is Wanam Xposed and the only thing I have enabled on Wanam is the flashlight on the lock screen. Before I installed this tweak I had the shortcuts on my keyboard, after I installed it and rebooted my phone the shortcuts were gone. It feels weird without them, I'm so used to them being there. I rooted my phone with Kingo root, and I wouldn't know how to flash to the stock rom. Please help.

If you disabled/uninstalled this mod, and rebooted, it's no longer there. It makes no persistent changes to the system. If Wanam updated before you rebooted, that could do it. That one does modify CSC files. I have no idea if that is what happened in your case or not. I'm afraid that I can't be much more help directly as I don't have an ATT N3 to test on. The best advice I can give is to hit the ATT N3 Q&A forum and post there about your issue. Perhaps someone can send you a backup of their CSC files? Or someone may have run into the same thing and know the cause. I would be VERY shocked if this little mod had anything to do with it though. It's only a few steps away from "Hello World".
Wanam is what's breaking the symbols. There's a setting to turn them off, and it's "on" by default.
Turning it off doesn't always make the symbols come back. But after a few reboots they will be there. I had the same problem before I even found your .apk
And updated version would be great where I can pick my own milliseconds.. I'm a 128ms kinda guy

Thank you so much for saying this. I have a Verizon Note 3 but I was having this issue on a new ROM and I thought I had some weird junky modified keyboard because I didn't even realize it was a Wanam option. It was driving me insane. Somehow I found your post in a search and I'm glad I did! I actually couldn't get them to come back after a few reboots but uninstalled Wanam with the symbols turned on, reinstalled, rebooted, and THEN they came back.
This is nice! I have another question too if anyone can answer me. I flashed the root 4.3 stock odin style onto my note 2. After rebooting brand new and checking my samsung keyboard settings, it showed having the auto replace option there which is good for me. After a while though i noticed that it would not replace my words anymore and checked the keyboard settings and the auto replace was gone!! Anyone know what may have happened?
After I updated my xms to android 4.3 my keyboard pops up really slow. Once it's opened it is quite responsive, but it seems to take a while to open. In particular in the native sms app, when I create a new message and the cursor jumps from the contact field (after selecting a contact) to the text field it literally takes a few seconds to respond.
Anyone a solution for this?
Can I install the old keyboard without root (cause there is no root with locked bootloader available?) ?
Thx
Mine is slow too... Please help us, also have i launcher redraws very often

Could I try to decompile the keyboard from here (http://www.xperiaguide.com/2013/11/07/xperia-keyboard-version-5-6-d-1-28-ota-update-xperia-s-sl-p/), change the package name, recompile it and install it as a normal apk? Any chance that could work?

So I tried this: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/16840127/how-to-install-the-same-app-twice-without-interference
and got an apk that I could actually install and it was registered as a keyboard, but it crashed when i tried to actually use it
No idea why and now idea how to find out.
Guess I'll just wait for a root method that works with locked BL

Unlock bootloader? That's a lot of work for a keyboard friend. If you can, I'd wait for an update to fix it. I'm not sure voiding warranty is worth editing keyboards, but it's up to you.

Yeah I know that's an option, but for the reasons you mentioned I'm not really willing to do that. But as soon as there is a root method that worked on locked bootloader I will try to replace the keyboard.
Thanks
found this one which could be installed as normal apk. Settings etc. worked but it also crashed on opening the keyboard itself.

Got it to work after getting full root.
I'll give you steps if you're still interested (basically just flashing a zip of the old keyboard, although I did it manually)

the default xperia keyboard was really slow for me as well.
i'm currently using a keyboard named Smart Keyboard, it pops up instantly. i love it.
been using the android l google keyboard too, it's pretty fast.
Yeah I tried some other keyboards as well but I liked none of them as much as the xperia keyboard from 4.1 (maybe because it was my first).
I like that it gives a lot of suggestions instead of just of 2, that it deletes the whole word after swiping and pressing backspace, that it suggests quotation marks after a space etc.
It is not as fast as some other keyboards during the typing itself, but not slow enough to become irritating to me. And definitely less irritating than the slow opening of the new xperia keyboard, or switching between receiver and text field in sms app which literally took seconds with the new one.
