Question about dalvik to SD - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm using a2sd and have set up and confirmed dalvik cache on my sdCard (ran the command and which rebooted the phone, then ran the check that showed dalvik is on the sdCard. When I look in Spare Parts under Data Storage Options, the last item on the list is Dalvik-Cache on SDCard which is currently unchecked, indicating Dalvik-Cache on /data.
I'm confused (not uncommon ). Are these the same or different?
Any thoughts?
Running Myn's latest rom.
Mike

Spare parts is asking if that's where you want dalvik stored just leave it alone its already being stored on sd if you ran the a2sd command

WIPE

In wipe options it has one that says Wipe SD:ext partition. What does that exactly do, what does it wipe from SD? I don't understand that one.
dont worry. if you didnt manually create an ext partition using the partition sd option then, more than likely, you dont have one. it can be used as external cache basically.
Thanks for the reply

Runnymede 5.3, increased internal memory?

I am running the Runnymede 5.3 from Sebastian which i find excellend other than the lower internal storage I have.
I am on the CM7/R2 version after restoring my apps, i only have 20mb free. I dont want to use the XD2SDX script as i find it laggy.
So question is, is there any other way to get increased internal storage? I was thinking of moving the dalvik to the SD by using the zip created by coolexe but it does not seem to work.
Is there any other way for increased storage?
move dalvik to sd slows system
like XD2SDX
must have a class 10 sd card to speed up the system

Agree, I moved the dalvik on previous roms without any issues at all. Any ideas to the original question?
Im not familiar enough with the a2sd script thats in the rom.
if you explore the device, is dalvik on sd ext or on data instead?

Dalvik is on data. I was hoping to move this to sd-ext but not sure how.

The script attatched to the first post of 5.3 for a2sd, if you read it says:
Code:
busybox mkdir /data/dalvik-temp busybox chmod 777 /data/dalvik-temp###> Copy Application Dalvik to dalvik-temp cd /sd-ext/dalvik-cache; echo "Dalvik On SD-EXT:"
Which says it does move it.

Sorry, but where does it say that on the thread?
I have again checked and the dalvik is definetly on data. if the dalvik was on the SD, i should have loads more space.

It doesn't say it in the thread. At the botom of Post 1 is a list of attachments. One of which is a2sdx. If you download that and look at the script inside, it says that. Perhaps you need to flash that zip?
Im trying to avoid that script has i find it very problematic like many others.
So i was hoping a for a simple dalvik to sd script.
That script apparently doesnt work well with stock Hboot.
The simplest script is the redux one which you can download, but you will need to titanium backup all apps and settings, Factory reset, REMOVE YOUR EXISTING a2sd SCRIPT! then flash that one from the Redux website.
How do i remove the existing A2sd script?
If you have root explorer you can just browse to system/etc/init.d and delete what I assume is called 40apps2sd. But when you reboots all your app links are lost meaning all your apps will be broken so titanium backup first.
Or remove it from the Rom zip first in the same place (even replace it with the one on the redux site) and reflash

Did that and it seems to have worked, I now have over 200mb of space.
Strangely, the low memory warning message still pops up after a reboot.

Not sure about the message but its small potatoes.

(Q) Is my partition causing this?

Everytime I'm on a sense rom it runs super smooth for the like the first hour then i start getting extreme lag. By lag I mean I can barely go to the screen, when I use the keyboard it's really delayed and laggy. The only way to stop the lag is to wipe dalvik cache and cache. But that solves it temporarily. Is the partitioned card causing the lag? I'm using the stock sd card that came with my phone.

I think It's slow because your dalvik cache is on your partition. Use a2sd help in terminal to find the command to move it back to the cache partition. I'm blanking on that command.
Edit: type in
su
a2sd cachepartreset
This will move it back to the cache partition and clear it and reboot your phone.
If that doesn't work you can try
a2sd nocachereset
Which will move the dalvik cache to the internal storage.
my evo is aggressively runny

Will try later currently on miui so can't test because I don't use a2sd on it

So I decided to unpartition and reformat my card. I only get that lag I mentioned on sense roms. So I'm going to stick to miui for now. Most likely going to best buy later and getting a class 10 card
I actually looked to see what class my card was an its 8gb class 4 thought it would be good enough

Problem clearing Dalvik cache

When I am trying to clear the Dalvik cache as a step in installing whatever ROM I am getting an error message.
When I go into Advanced>Wipe Dalvik Cache> as soon as I select Wipe and it asks me if I'm sure, a line shows up that says "E:unknown volume for path [/sd-ext]". When I scroll down and say yes it gives me a message that says it worked.
The SD card is actually at [/external_sd]. So did it work, or is it lying to itself?
I'm confused about why it's looking for the Dalvik cache on the external SD. I thought that would be internal. What do I need to change so that CWM (and my OS?) is looking for the external in the right place?
I discovered this when I was installing Jugs 3.7. It installed clean and is working just fine. This error message also reproduced itself when I installed Domination 2.0 with the ICS theme. That rom also installed correctly and, as far as I could tell in the hour I was playing with it, had no glitches.

Mine says the same with the volume ....I thought it was just me....but everything runs perfect so I didn't wanna bring it up

Same here...not worried. All works without a glitch.

You can ignore that error. Almost everyone will get it.
The reason being, there are ext to sd scripts that people use on other devices that have very low internal storage. So they will move the /data partition to sd-ext. Now since the dalvik-cache is located in the /data partition, the wipe dalvik cache script inside cwm will auto-wipe to both locations, just incase. Since our phones don't really need this, we have tons of internal storage, we don't utilize those scripts.
Also don't confuse this with apps 2 sd scripts, or just moving apps to your sdcard, it's not the same thing.

[Q] E:unknown volume for path [/sd-ext]

In my defense, and before anyone jumps up and yells "questions go in Q&A forum" I know that and originally posted this question in the Q&A forum but, as is the case too often with the Q&A forums, it got only one response and no real answer.
So at the risk of being flamed (I have thick skin, I can handle it) I'm moving the post here in hopes of getting some help with understanding this.
Thanks in advance to anyone who responds with valid information/answers.
Anytime I wipe Dalvik Cache I get the following message.
E:unknown volume for path [/sd-ext]
I haven't altered any of the settings in my phone (that I know of) and I seem able to read from my sd card just fine so I don't think it's negatively affecting anything but I'd like to know why I get this and what it means.

Much appreciated but I didn't realize it isn't wiping dalvik cache so wouldn't have known to search for that problem. I never partition my sd cards and only started seeing this error a few weeks ago despite having wiped dalvik cache (on 3 different phones) many times. Or maybe I just didn't notice it before if it's a common issue with un-partioned sd cards.
Thanks for your help.

It's still wiping your dalvik just not EXT dalvik because your sd isn't partitioned. So it's still wiping internal dalvik. That's why it says dalvik wiped after it tells you no ext found.

Okay that makes sense.
Thanks for the responses.
So if we let it repartition, then we loose all the data on the card right? I have a 16gb (i know its not much compared to you 64gb sd'rs) but sometimes it can be slow (it is class 10) and yes, I know the benefits would be great, but I feel kinda lazy and do not want to repartition if I dont have to.

Hi, I DO have my card partitioned.
I used minitool to partition 1.5GB of my microsd in ext-2 and I still get this error.
