One of the key features i loved with Windows Mobile was i could manage files and download files from the web with ease. i could download pictures, mp3's, zip folders, rar folders and extract the files all on the phone without being dependent on a computer.
Now i recently had a chance to try to download a mp3 file that i uploading on a hosting site and when i clicked download the mp3 i was trying to download began playing in the browser but i could not locate it on the device. What happens when u try to download pictures, mp3s , zip and rar files on wp7? i know theres no file manager but u are able to save pictures from what ive read so why cant we save mp3s and add it to the zune library on the phone? what happens with the zip and rar files? and if u are able to download zip and rar then maybe we can get some kind of pocketrar or something
is it any chance of a limited file explorer being made that just gives u access to files downloaded from the web without giving access to the phones files and registry settings that they dont want us tampering with?
this is a huge issue along with the usb mass storage mode and multitasking that i really hope they add support for in the future
Lol, I posted the same thing a week ago. So far all I found is you can save pictures to your phone. MP3's download and start to play in Zune, but they aren't saved. Same thing for videos I tried to download. Tried to download a zipped mixtape. No Go!
i hope they address this some kind of way because i do this 90% of the time now on my touch pro 2
it will unzip standard zip files but I don't know about the rest of the compressed files.

Like I said when I dl music, The Zune player opens up and plays the song. Video same thing. It opens the file just like on your computer when you select open instead of save. That's it. I was able to save pictures. They go with the other pictures on my phone. PDF go in Adobe Reader, but the must delete after you read them unless you save them(?). I get them everyday and read but I've never deleted them but they are gone.
internet exploere does have any featue to download files, even picture.
suppose it is possible to download files, where would the files go? how to find them.

If you select a picture on a webpage, you hold down on it and the save option comes up. That's all I've found. You keep asking. Everything I've tried doesn't download. IE buffers it then plays it. Like Netflix does! You watch a movie but it's not on your phone or computer.
Yea that was a killer for me that's why I use my mytouch 4g now and because the brower is so slow

played with this further. After downloading zip of 2 songs, it did unzip them and allowed them to be played, but it would not save them to the phone as far as I could tell.
I just tried a pdf, it downloade and open in adobe reader, but it is never saved to phone.
this is a big problem for WP7. cannot load files to phone except music and videos.
how to take out the files in word and one note mobile? i save some files and could not take them out.
As for pdfs and pictures its not true.
Those two can be saved and opened in the pictures hub and the adobe pdf app.
I don't think its a huge problem but I would also like it to be "fixed". Maybe Microsoft want to prevent that users are buying music at amazon or other stores than zune?
Edit: And for getting office stuff or pdfs out of the phone: you can email it to you... (not the best solution i know)

is it impossible to make a file explorer app for the marketplace that only gives u access to storage space on the memory card and not to the phones file system? that way you can manage files through the alotted space on the memory card adding songs to zune and pdf files zip folders and other kinds of files? that way saving files would be no problem and ur not screwing with the phones file system would microsoft go for a app like this?
pdf save in picture hub? i dont see it anywhere. you cant even email it to yourself if you cant find the file.
it is not saved it the file system. I tried to put the phone into usb mode, just see what files in pictures, and music folder. pdf is not there.
Guys,
Pdf is AUTOMATICALLY saved to the phone once opened from email or website.
You just need AdobeReader and files can be browsed and deleted from the app.

would it be possible now with mango for someone to make a app called Zip Manager or something that lets u d/l Zip and/or Rar files to that app and the zip files are only accessible within that app to open documents and other files contained in them and manage them in that app?
same with mp3 or other files be able to manage them in that app only?
the Free Music app made me think of that... we cant d/l mp3s through the browser and add to the device library but we can manage the mp3s we download through that app and with the paid version we can sync the files over
could something similiar to this be made to manage zip and rar files????
Due to the sandbox nature of WP7, you can't access the local file system. Also I don't think 1 app can open another app. So for example, you couldn't unzip a PDF and then call Adobe Reader to view it.
One way around this would be for your zip / rar app to download the file, un-compress and then upload it to a folder on skydrive. Then it would be there ready to open and use. I'm pretty sure I read that WP7 can already open zip files, so maybe you can already do this through the browser? What are you trying to download exactly??
an other good idea is too contact htc samsung lg or dell to make a app for bluetooth in and outbox and zip app all in one

Save games will be tricky as they all are located in their own folder.
Documents are stored in \My Documents\
Pdf's are stored here \Applications\Data\BC4F319A-9A9A-DF11-A490-00237DE2DB9E\Data\IsolatedStore\
Copying them "easily" is not an easy task. For the pdf's I suggest you sideload adobe pdf reader app and than use wppowertools to connect to the iso storage of this GUID BC4F319A-9A9A-DF11-A490-00237DE2DB9E, now you will be able to see all pdf files and copy them easily to the pc. Alernatively if you own a samsung you can use WP7 Root Tools or DiagProvXML (which has built in copy pdf to office hub, from which you can email the pdf).
Docs can not be accessed and will need to be transfered trough skydrive or mail.
okay works good thanks

I'm a complete n00b. I'm just trying to figure out on how to send videos from pc to my phone for a while now. HTC sync manager allows only adding mp3 files to the library but not video files to send to the phone.. And copy-pasting directly on the storage card also isn't helping me. When I copy paste it to my storage card, i can't find that file on my phone again. it only can be seen through astro file manager. any other way to send files from pc to phone which can be seen on my phone after i disconnect it from pc?
Go to settings - apps - All - Gallery - clear data/cache
Copy paste your movie file, open the gallery and let it rebuild it's cache/data.

Thanks! And is this the actual way to transfer videos from pc to One V?
NO.. need to do that when the gallery cannot see your video.
To transfer, just put your phone on Disk Drive mode, then just copy from PC and paste to SDcard.
So , does it work or not ? I can't think any other reason why the file is not showing on Gallery unless it can't read the video file format.

It worked perfectly. My first android phone. Will take some time to get familiar with this OS. Thanks again!
OK, I have searched dozens of threads and it seems they all come back to the same thing. I'm looking for someone to tell me if my deductions are correct. Movies must be stored ON the device or they will not play. There is no option to send them to the SD card.
Next, how do I delete the movie I did download? I can do it from ES file Explorer if that is the only way.
Thanks....
i guess u need to "un-pin" the movie....

Holy crap . . that must be why it downloaded in the first place. So easy. I guess I tried to make it more difficult than it is...
You can, if you have root access, cut and paste the .samsungvideohub folder onto your external from internal storage. The files will play, theres a subfolder then a numbered folder and inside the numbered folder a .pyv file eg. titanic.pyv. The .pyv files are the video files and will play on most players.
You must have root access to to see inside the hidden folder....
I used to be able to but haven't done so since March/April on account of the summer holidays but with school having now started again I need to download pdfs.
Basically I tried yesterday to download a pdf, the first red flag was that it wouldn't let me change the destination to the external storage, the external sd card wasn't showing as if there wasn't one in. I thought little of this thinking I'll just move it later.
Once downloaded however it won't move (using ES file explorer) and won't open, Adobe says its not a valid PDF document. I can download and open etc. on my phone (2011 Note). And I also managed to download the file on my computer and transfer it via USB, this also works no problem, I can open it and move it around etc. on the tablet.
I've tried a few files multiple times and the same thing is happening so I don't think its a case of the download being incomplete.
I'm using Dolphin and the firmware updated a few days ago.
Any ideas?
Thanks.
@dtst Have you tried deleting and downloading adobe again?
If its not a personal pdf document I will happily try download it from my tablet to test it. I kniw for certain I can download files no problem as I downloaded loads of PDF files a few weeks back.
Yeah uninstalling/reinstalling Adobe didn't work.
Thanks for the offer unfortunately its on the colleges moodle site so I can't link it.
I've had issues with pdfs that had copy protection on them, I couldn't save them or move them
Should have tried this earlier tbh but it seems to be a problem with Dolphin.
I have successfully downloaded the same pdf using Chrome, Opera and the stock browser just annoying since Dolphin is my preferred browser and the others don't give the option to change destination on a file by file basis (afaik).
Hopefully this will be fixed in an update by Dolphin but for now its just a minor inconvenience.
Also ES file explorer seems to have a problem, when I try moving the newly download file it fails, again the stock file explorer is moving the files fine. Hopefully this too will be fixed soon.
I'm just glad I can download files to my tablet in class now without having to wait to use my laptop and transferring later.
