Desire SD read-only problem - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've had a strange problem, even after reboot my Desire couln't mount sdcard with write access.
Because all my apps are stored on sd-ext, i need the card to be mounted with full permissions and also the icon on the status bar was annoying.
I've read a lot about read-only sd card problem, but tried the simplest thing:
- boot in recovery and connect via usb OR connect your sd card through card reader
on pc:
- select new drive, that appeared
- open regular windows scandisc, check all available repairs and run scandisc
Most likely it find some disc structure errors and will repair it.
After done, your phone should mount the sd card with write acces.
Hope this helps somebody!

[Q] SD Card mounts read only

I've rooted my Desire and installed the LeeDroid flavour of Froyo. I've formatted my SD card with the EXT3 partition, and everything went perfectly. However, I've found that when I run the new 3D Gallery application, the app stops resonding, and I need to close it (not force close though, just usual exit). When it closes, I receive a message saying "there is a problem with your SD card", and it mounts read only. I can remount the SD card, which resolves the problem. I'm guessing that the 3D Gallery is corrupted somehow, but can't uninstall it to see if this corrects the problem. Can anyone please let me know if there's a way of uninstalling the Gallery app (if this is the best way), or if there's a way to file check the SD card to fix errors (like FSCK), or if I can remove a corrupted directory, or anything really to fix this problem? Thank you
It's the A2SD+ bug. Search for SD card corruption.
use card reader to copy everything from your SD card FAT32 partition to your computer, format the SD card (just format the FAT32 partition), and transfer back the files from your computer to the card. that should do the trick.
always reboot your phone after going into Disk Drive mode to prevent this from happening again. or transfer files in recovery mode. that's A2SD+ bug. otherwise use rom without A2SD+.

[Q] SD card not detected

I’ve recently upgraded the SD card in my desire to a 16GB class 4 and its giving me some major issues! I’m running OpenDesire 4.0.1 and the sequence of events was as follows:
1. Inserted new SD card and formatted with gParted: 512MB Ext3 and the rest FAT32 (Ext3 partition was at the end – hope that’s correct!)
2. Rebooted fine and all the apps stored on the internal memory were present and correct. Those that I had moved to the old SD card were missing so I uninstalled them.
3. Tried to install Estrongs file manager from appbrain using the fast web installer function. This downloaded OK but the phone rebooted during installation. Tried again but same thing occurred again.
4. Tried plugging phone into PC. USB debugging mode started up fine but I wasn’t offered the option of mounting the SD card
5. Unplugged USB and inspected phone storage menu to find that no SD card was mounted
6. Rebooted a few times, removed and reinstalled SD card etc – still no SD card detected by the phone
7. Booted into recovery, connect phone to PC and used the “mount USB” option in Clockwork mod. This was successful and allowed me to inspect my SD card on the PC. Noticed that Dalvik cache and some apps (those not included as part of the ROM) were present on the SD card (FAT32 partition) – OpenDesire must have moved them there automatically (but why to the FAT32 partition and not Ext3?).
8. Rebooted phone out of recovery to check that those apps that appeared on the SD card were accessible in Android. Found that they were, which is strange given that the SD card was still not being detected by the system.
9. Decided to mount SD card again via clockwork recovery method and formatted the FAT32 partition with gParted.
10. Rebooted phone and found SD card still not detected and all those apps that had magically been moved to the SD card by OpenDesire were (unsurprisingly) gone.
11. Tried a few adb commands that I found in another thread but didn’t seem to have any effect.
Out of ideas – can anyone help?! Will try old SD card tonight and see what happens, but I don’t think there is a problem with the new card since I managed to successfully mount it through clockwork. I’m also wondering why the apps were moved to the FAT32 partition instead of Ext3? I thought that’s what the Ext3 partition was for?
Cheers
The FAT32 partition must be the first partition on your SD card, and it seems from what you've said that you created the EXT partition first.
Regards,
Dave
no the the FAT32 was first then the Ext3
OK fixed. Managed to mount the SD card on the PC via clockworkmod, deleted all partitions and rebooted phone. Phone detected SD card and asked me to format it. Did that and then added a ext partition using gParted.

SD card broken, how to format?

So somehow my SD card became unreadable. It seems the files are still there as the space is taken up, but it cannot be read in the ROM and it seems that apps cannot write to the SD card anymore. WHen I connect in Windows no folders show up or anything, almost like the owner changed or something. I cannot format the SD card in Clockwork as it just goes to a black screen and ClockworkMod reboots back to the main screen when I try to format the SD card. I also cannot mount the SD card through Clockwork as it doesnt work. So how do I go about formatting the whole SD card and removing all data and partition it properly?
First you can performe a chkdsk on it. Mount it to your pc so it shows under my computer, go to cmd and enter the following command:
chkdsk [sd card drive letter]: /r
Sent from my LT26i using xda premium
How do I mount it in the PC so the phone has a drive letter? Whenever I plug the phone in it just mounts as a portable media device and has no letter at all.
...what?
/sdcard symlinks to /data/media/. Your sdcard cannot be broken unless your data partition is corrupted.
This exact same thing happened to me about 4 weeks ago and the only way to fix it was to restore to a stock google image and start over (root, recovery, etc.).. Hope you can find a better fix.
I'd give "SDrescan" from the Google Play store a chance. It forces a rescan and can fix files not appearing correctly on the "SD card".
Another way is to relock the bootloader and then unlock it through fastboot. It will clear the SD Card completely. I had the same issue two weeks back or so.

[Q] sdcard damaged after using usb mass storage

So I am using the infamous v4 Rom and I have been happy with it. I used the usb mass storage enabler app for the first time. After transferring my fines, I ejected the sd card and disconnected the phone. I then switched the phone back to mtp mode. This was when all the problems started. Now my apps can't find my sdcard but the es file explorer and gallery can see the sdcard fine. When I unmount the sdcard and remount it, I will get the message sd card damaged try reformatting it. I did a full reformat, not the quick one. Still says damaged when I mount it. Doesn't make sense that the file explorer and my computer sees the card fine but some apps says the card is missing.
What did you format the card too? FAT32?
yes, i formatted it as fat32

[Q] My External Micro SD card is locked up! Can't write to it (android 4.3)

I'm not sure if this is related to the 4.3 bug or not but I have the tmobile galaxy s4 and I can no longer modify anything on my external sd card. Everything still reads fine but it seems alot slower than before.
I tried using es file manager to delete/write , but it dosen't work. It will say deleted successfully but when i refresh, it reappears. When i try to create a new file it says "sorry, operation failed"
I also checked the permissions file and it says it has r/w access for external storage.
Is my card just dying or corrupted or what? How can I fix this?
I just want to be able to use it again.
I also tried formatting. When i do it on the phone it just freezes. When I do it on the pc, it says write protected.
I tried gparted as well but it hangs during detection.
This is the default micro sd card that came with the phone...

Remove your external microSD and plug it into a card reader and or the adapter which came
with the card then plug it into your computer.
Make an empty folder on desktop of computer and copy all files and folders from the microsd
card into the empty folder.
Format your external microsd using this windows utility and copy all the files/folders back onto
the card from your computer and replace it into your phone.
Here is the direct download link for this fat32 formatter which is a windows utility:

By doing the above your external microSD card should work find again.
Good luck!
