Anyone get a good video chat app working on Archos yet? I installed Fring but it says that video chat is not available on my hardware...I have A101IT. Just wondering if there is something else out there.
Thanks,

Skype will have video chat for android later this month!
Oovoo works
Yahoo and ooVoo seem to work the best.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905327
Sorry, but i have to ask the obvious question, for those who claim oovoo and yahoo messenger works..have you actually tried using them to make video calls?
I've used both the latest apps using my brother's archos 70 to video chat with my galaxy tab but had dismal results. Ooovoo connects but my galaxy tab does not show the video from the Archos 70 and the connection terminates after 10 sec.
Yahoo messenger displays the image just fine but after a few seconds..the image hangs. Even tried its connection with my desktop version. Same thing.
I've also tried the older version of fring to talk to my galaxy tab running the latest fring from the market, but I get a warning from my tab's fring telling me the other party is using an earlier fring version and may have compatibility issues. If I ignore the warning, fring crashes after 10 seconds.
All testing were done with both devices connected to the same wifi router.
Hence sadly, as of now, I do not believe there is even one working video chat software for the Archos 70 running on the latest firmware.

I have used Yahoo with no problems. I personally haven't tested ooVoo yet.. waiting for it to get out of beta.

I ported my ReelPortal video conference to Android recently. It's reported to be working on the Viewsonic G Tablet with certain ROMs. I believe it works on the Archos 70/101, but I don't know how well, since the G Tablet has the Tegra-2 dual-core CPU and the Archos don't.
Anyhow, my app is published on AppLibs, or you can get it from the G Tablet thread here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=908613
Please provide feedback if you try it. Thanks.

I cannot get ooVoo to work on the new firmware (2.1.2). Anyone else got it working? I can see myself but I can't see the person on the other end...I was doing it from my Archos to a laptop with webcam.
video chat
Hey guys what you have to do is download an older version of fring (2.1.0.6) this one works on my archos 70 ... I can't remember where I got the apk but its easy enough to find on google I'm sure, might even be somewhere on xda.
I tested Yahoo video chat with a PC client and it worked - quite well actually, but I was forced to uninstall Yahoo on my A70 because receiving any yahoo text messages would crash my device (forcing me to reboot). I tested this several times and unfortunately, it wouldn't be practical to tell my contacts not to message me as it defeats the purpose
If (and when) Skype comes out with their video chat, I will definitely try it.

I used to use fring with skype but now that skype banned them from using it i dont have any other method of chatting with my family when i am away. Anyone have a solution to this?
No ways as of yet, unless Fring or Qik get desktop apps or Skype gets a native Android app.
you can do this with sipdroid...much better quality than fring...although, you need a gv number or sipgate number to pair with sipdroid (PLUS -there is a small monthly fee to add videocalling to pc via a pbxes account) ...just google sipdroid for videocalling and you can watch a video of how it is done on sipdroids homepage. this can be done over 3g,4g or wifi ...seems to be much better quality than video streaming of justintv, qik or than fring was
Yes,
Imovicha (Movicha) works very well from EVO to PC or EVO to another phone. I use this to communicate with a number of our PCs.

I just tried out imovicha for the first time...is there any way to get the quality of the video seen on the computer to be good? mine is really blocky and wont show on cpu bigger than about 3 inches by 3 inches??!!! Video skype through fring (when it was available) was much better quality.
I found a Skype beta but have not yet tried it out. I will report back.

I think there was a skype app in one of the magnus cyan upgrades in the theme section. I tried one once and it wasn't for me so I flashed over it. I thought awhile ago that someone ripped out skype and another app or two out of a verizon droid. I don't remember if it worked but I remember that you had to have the o they apps with it or it wouldn't work.
When i tried the skype beta app, it didn't have video chat...
Has anyone tried Movicha for the Evo yet? It's got pretty bad reviews so far.

I don't know. Just checked out their site. It says there is a subscription fee, but makes no mention of how much it is! Guess you have to install the pp to find out.
Also, their FAQ says it does not support video from the phone on Android - you can see somebody on their PC, but they can't see you!!
If this is true what good is it???
"I tried to place a video call to a friend who was using an Android. How come he can see me, but I cannot see him?
Right now Android supports receive only video."
I have downloaded Movicha but haven't actually tried it yet. One thing to keep in mind is that there is a version specifically for the EVO. You have to search the market for "MovichaForEVO".
EDIT: Just tried it between my PC and phone... video from phone to PC kinda sucks on 3G but otherwise it does work (will try it over 4G when I'm at work Monday to see if video quality is any better)
It seems to make calls ok, video quality on the PC from my Evo was HORRIBLE though, the GUI is kinda meh, dont have sound or cam on pc (sitting at Sprint..cant really expect too much lol) to test that. All in all, its a step in the right direction, but certainly fails as a whole package. Ugly as hell basically....just wish I had gotten my evo before Fring issues to test skype with my gf on her laptop.
So, did you have to pay? If so, how much???
no, never once asked for anything but a name and an email. I sure as hell wouldnt be paying for something like this though

What's the best way to go about doing video calling on the Epic with a PC? I don't think Qik can do it, from what I understand Fring used to support Skype, but Skype has since blocked them. What's the next best?
Qik In Touch is what its called. This is why the whole front camera movement has taken place. I run it on my MAC and Windows via boot camp. Google it, it will take you to their website. Or click on the website link for them in the market.
Another thing, I have an Evo, I will forwarn you, the epic's screen is what makes it crisp but the quality is not all that different. Enjoy...

just got my epic today and downloaded the qik in touch app... would u be able to put down some direction so me and my daughter can talk thru a video call when im using my epic and shes using qik in touch on my pc...
I downloaded Qik In Touch - it appears to me that it will let someone view your videos live, but not interact with you like a video call, correct?
i have the epic 4g and cannot get any video calls to connect. got a friend who also has an epic 4g and we cnanot seem to connect to each other. ideas?

If the the both of yall have epic's use fring from the market. It should work great.
I tested fring from my evo to another evo and to a pc via the fing app. I assume my Epic will fare as well.
Worked well, but had the delay you should expect.

What did you use to video call a pc from your evo? I hear skype has blocked fring. Is there another program that accepts fring video calls on a pc?
Sorry for the bit of thread necro, but does anyone know how to go about this? I was excited about the video chat, but no one I know uses an iPhone 4, Epic, or Evo, and I was expecting to be able to talk to PCs with webcams.
i found 2 versions, qik video and qik for HTC evo 4g, 2 different apps, but i didnt found wik in touch.
i was really hoping to do video chat with a pc, hopefully skype will get this thing going ASAP.
I been using Movicha... but is not real good... and I think is a issue with the Epic... only works good with the Evo.. I think the Evo had more develoment interest on developers than the Epic.. so I thinking in retuning my Epic for a Evo..

As far as I know, the first Android phone with a front camera was the Evo (correct me if I'm wrong), which was released a solid three months ago. If it was just a matter of there being existing but currently incompatible software, it wouldn't be nearly as big a deal, but as far as I can tell there's just nothing to fill this need. On top of that, this is all assuming that it should be left up to third party developers, when I think this should have been available in the first place (at the very least, given us a Windows or Flash chat client for Qik).
i can get fring msging and voice calling to work but it says video is not supported when i try with aim or gtalk
yahoo video messenger works. Kinda sucks though. Hopefully they'll improve it. But If you really need phone <-> pc then this is it.
for video from phone <-> phone, I recommend Tango or Fring. I like Tango the most because its super simple and the video seems a bit better. Tango occasionally has an issue with the mic, usually toggling the mic of and on again will get it working.

And that is because it does not exist or it is not out yet, correct me if i am wrong.
Yahoo just announced the other day that an official messenger app with video for Android is coming out soon, so watch out for that.
Plus Skype is going to release a Galaxy S compatible version of Skype soon as well (other Android phones work with Skype right now). :-(
So for now, it's only phone to phone (via Tango, not my favourite but it works) for us Epic users. I just completed a Tango test call from my Epic to a friend's iPhone 4.
Forgive My Brevity. To Be Or Not To Be...
Hey everyone one of the main reasons I got the evo is for video calls to my mom who is abroad. Unfortunately this is not as easy as I thought or I'm a total idiot. My mom has a Skype premium account I have no computer or Skype. I tried fringe, and qik but can't get either to work.
I really need step by step instructions on how to set this up my mom can do programs but unfortunately qik and fringe are mobile only so please someone tell me how to do this
fring doesn't have permission to use Skype anymore so that will not work with Skype.

Please read the rest of the thread where I asked what program I can use for video calling
I was just telling ya that's why fring doesn't work, you in case someone comes on here asking the same.. but I personally don't know of any programs. sorry

I'm interested in this as well. I had video calling working back when Fring and Skype played like nice kids on the playground but we know how that went. They both even mass emailed pointing the finger at each other.
Sometimes you need to see a face. My Dad lives 3,300 miles away and there is a possibility my exwife gets full custody of my kids and moves away. I use Gmail video chat on my desktop, but apparently Google didn't think it was a priority feature for Android phones sporting a front camera. I'm hoping all the iphone video chat hype steers Google into incorporating this into Gingerbread.
Anyone have an alternative?
If fringe or qik were downloadable on pc that would be a solution I'm also wondering why we don't have Skype mobile available to us
And another dream...
Somebody should make a face time emulator that is able to accept face time calls. Or just a working video chat app. Whichever comes first.
I like ooVoo. Works great on the EVO and PC.
Oovoo works well wit PC to evo. I've used it several times n it works. Oovoo is the only one that works I think

Here are two that work:
Yahoo Messenger and Ovoo
I'll have to try ooVoo. Until now the best I could come up with was a web cam app that wifi tethers the front camera to my pc running skype. The sound is no good though so i'd still have to make the phone call for audio. Was kinda cool to be able to walk around with the phone as a mobile web cam though
So what options do we have with the SGS2 for video chat/calling?
I see in the dialer/contacts there is an option to call somebody with video, how
does that work? Has anybody been able to try it?
D
I can confirm that the video calling from the dialer works great between two SGSIIs, even over a week 3G signal.
If you have root access, you can also install the new Google Talk app that has video. Works great as well between phone and PC over wifi at least.
I haven't tested other than this, but it gets me in touch with my fiancee on the phone and family/friends on Google Talk. I have a feeling we'll be waiting a while for Skype video support now that they've been bought by Microsoft.
edit: There are of course other third party options but I want to use the ones with the greatest adoption and compatibility between devices, which is Skype and Google in my opinion.

I wonder how long 'we' will have to wait for Android 2.3.4 with the Gtalk/video/voice built in? Or maybe Google will release the Gtalk app with this feature on the market soon.
Guess I could always root
Can someone confirm that Gtalk video chat on AT&T only works over WiFi? I can see & chat with people over 3G and it will even say video available and show the video icon but it then tells me that I need WiFi. Is there a way around this? Perhaps an edit to the prop file or even the Gtalk file thru root exployer to enable the video over 3g..?

Are you sure? I think Paul's auto install is the version that only works over wifi. I've installed that version off a fresh hard reset twice and no 3g. I believe someone from that thread actually said that apk was for the wfi only version.
UPDATE: Figured it out. I had to find the updated Talk2.apk and I used root exployer to copy over the old APK. Since it was already installed, that's all I had to do. Re-booted and Google Chat now works over 3g. Wow, it logged in 1st attempt after re-boot with no issues and started working right away. Good stuff... One quick question thou. When someone tries to video chat with me, I only get the notification saying someone tried to video chat but you were not on WIFI. I can then go right ahead video chat them back over 3g and everything is fine. So, I only ring for a video chat if I'm in WIFI but can send no problem over 3g..? Is that where we are at with it or is there something I'm missing..?
Tango is another great video calling app on the market its free and it works real good 3G and wifi it also detects who in youre contact list has it

tried video calls to several friends' android mobiles today in the office - all failed. not sure if it's a network or device limitation, none of the friends had samsung phone tho.
are video calls using the "stock" functions generally only supported between devices of the same make/model?

Do they have UK or EURO standard video chat over 3G enabled? I know I did hear that you can video chat within the dialer with SGS2 to SGS2. If anyone wants to dare try this from one SGS2 to another, or any other GSM phone that has the video chat icon in the dialer. let me know.
Ok as the title states, which video calling app do you prefer.? Been using tango and its been reliable, and now I see oovoo, now has support for the gs2 as well, so what are your experiences please.
Been using only Tango and it does its job pretty good. Can't complain, if anyone knows other apps please share the hint
Yes tango for me as well has been amazing, been calling my wife on holiday in Africa and despite the poor network over there it has managed to work, and also now oovoo, seem to support the gs2 so will be putting it through the paces tomorrow when I cal my wife.
I use yahoo messenger. Fring looks pretty good as well with group video chat. Yahoo needs a special application from xda to work

is free, and it works like Skype 2
the only information, hard to gather from the use of these apps, is which is more data effeicient, i would put my money on google, being the native app, but its hard to tell, and am really feeling it, more so now that my wife is in a country, were data is very expensive.
Tango is brilliant

Have tried just about everything and every time I keep coming back to Tango.
So the answer is Tango. Reliable and best quality of them all.
skype ftw!! but only on desktop pc. i'll use whichever connects me to my gf, in this order.
Skype > Tango > Fring > gtalk(cuz she have an iphone so this is last)
last time i checked oovoo is not for sgs2 yet so i'm gonna try now.
Skype. Not because it's the best, but because everyone else already has it, and it supports both phone to phone, and phone to PC.
A lot of the other apps look really great, but it's a huge PITA making someone sign up for a service and install even more software just to talk to me.
Just a heads up oovoo, video calling now officially supports the gs2, haven't tried it myself but it looks promising.
tried it with my gf's iphone 4. voice is great but my sgs2 video will hang/stuck while my gf's image is smooth like a soap.
I use fring (it can connect to all my other msgrs except skype). The group video function is also very handy
