[Q] Full backup and restore, inc root - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

There is a large section of my phone digitizer that no longer recognizes being touched. I am going to try to get a replacement under my warranty, but I need to know a few things before hand.
1. Will having CyanogenMod installed cause me any issues getting this replaced?
1a. If yes, what's the best way to go back to stock?
2. What's the best way to do a full backup, including root if possible.
3. How would I restore this backup? (I will be getting back a stock, unrooted, S-ON phone.)
EDIT- JK FOR SOME REASON THE CHARGER I WAS USING WAS MAKING THE DIGITIZER NOT WORK PROPERLY HOWEVER I AM GOING TO LEAVE THIS POST HERE INCASE ANYONE ELSE NEEDS TO KNOW. Best day ever.

Question for Shadowmite or anyone who knows

Greetings,
Am rooted, unREVOked, Clockwork recovery, s_off, froyo ROM and 2.XX radio and all of that working well. A couple of days ago my internal speaker blew, not sure why but is is all a buzz now and a replacement will be here in the morning. I am all clear and set with putting the old unit back to stock, but with a NANDROID backup, Titanium backup, and contacts backups all ready, can I just run unREVOked on the new one and do a NANDROID restore and all will be back, radio, s_off, and all ???? Or perhaps a good step by step so I do not break the new one ??? Thanks ;-)
no. you still have to run unrevoked, soff, and the 2.15 radio...after that, you can do anandroid restore
All done Grazi ;-)
I thought so,,,,all done flawlessly ;-)
Please report back
Sorry about your speaker ... I had to return 1 incredible over speaker issues myself.
I note that you ran S-OFF. I have avoided doing so for the exact reason that you are now experiencing ... blown speaker = warranty; S-OFF = no warranty; and one had NOTHING to do with the other.
There is some debate out there as to whether Verizon will figure out you ran S-OFF. Can you please report back and let us know if Verizon denies your warranty?
Thanks!
I would advise against restoring tha nandroid of the first device. There's a good chance that your old phone is going to be repaired and given out as a FRU. As such, both devices would share the same device id.

contagous and I learned the hard way. I sent him a completely tweaked and clean nandroid, with none of my personal info or anything like that. He has been using it and it works great.
Until AppBrain fast web installer is used. See, it IDs your device by the Android_ID, which is unique to every phone, or is supposed to be.
Nandroid backups will record this device ID, and clone it onto another device. Well, when contagous installs an app using the web installer, I get it. Without a prompt or nothing.
While I can do the same thing, and it was fun sending him pron apps and sexy men wallpapers, it has a real potential for a security nitemare. I trust contagous, but let this serve as a warning to everyone. Its also not so simple as installing another ROM and factory reset. So far as I can tell, as long as you stay on the same build OS, you will keep the same ID. The only thing that changed my ID to something else was going back to 2.1.
So friends, don't let friends share nandroids. If you do, play it smart, and delete all but the system and boot images and recalculate the md5.

While I do not intend to get into a debate about facts (facts are facts), the above is false.
I am on Incredible # 3. Each time I have nandroid restored on my new device. Each time I did so, I got a ton of FORCE CLOSES from Mobile Defender, which had to be uninstalled and reinstalled. Why? BECAUSE THE DEVICE ID WAS DIFFERENT.
If i log into Mobile Defender now, I see all 3 of my Incredibles all 3 with different device ID. Please understand, that's 3 phones, all of which used the same Nandroid, and all showing DIFFERENT Device IDs.
Ok steering my own thread, is that ok ????
Sort of still on the same tack but to address the above, I hope that the device ID thing being cloned by nandroid is false because I did not even think of it happening and I hope that I do not get whacked because of it. My old one was visually perfect so I hope they just replace the speaker, do a magic factory flash of some sort, which will hopefully S_ON the thing, and send it back out. An interesting thing is that I think some 3rd party company does the refurb because the box has a return label sending it to some other company, so maybe if they are not on the lookout then they will not check, just pass it thru like cattle on to the next customer. I will report back if VZW gives me any grief later on. If they do not honer warranty and charges me full price for the new one then they better send me my old one back and I will find the speaker myself from HTC and do an ESN swap with my old TP2.
On another note, steering my own thread yet again, when I did my restore I lost my pictures because I did not set the camera to store to SD card, but I assumed that they would be contained in the NANDROID backup, but they are not back in the new phone. I have serceral backups I could look thru but does anyone know how or what to use to open an .img file and which one they would be in ???? Thanks ;-)

HELP!!! I destoryed my EVO and just got a new one.

Ok so I fell on my evo (Hard) and completely smashed it. It does not turn on at all.
My Smashed phone was rooted etc... I did have Nandroid back ups on that phone.
I just got my new one and put my old SD card in it. I go into recovery and I get a back screen with a small pic of a phone and a red "!"
Is there anything I can do to image my new phone to the same as my old one?

Have you already rooted the new phone?
1. You still need to root the new phone
2. If you made your nandroid with amon ra (which you should), make sure you delete the wimax.img from the old nandroid before you try to restore it on the new phone otherwise you will hose your 4G forever.
Finally, in the interest of minimizing issues, you're better off just setting up again from scratch in case there's some compatibility problem with your new evo and you'll end up having to work backwards to figure out what's wrong.

that's what I did....took all of 2 hours I think including the rooting process. Just start fresh or I bet you will run into some bugs.
Ok I just re-rooted the phone.
How to i delete the Wimax.img?

Go into the nandroid folder and delete the wimax file.
Again, it's not recommended to restore a nandroid from a different phone, if you still want to, it's up to you, just make sure you delete the wimax file.
hmmm sounds like I might be playing with fire if I do this so I guess I will just do it manual. Thank you for the heads up!
Can I have your broken phone? I want to do a flip.

I would not use a nand from another phone like others have said it will break your 4G FOREVER.

First things to do when I get my Galaxy Nexus?

I am getting my Galaxy Nexus Tomorrow. This is my first smartphone. I would like to back up the phone completely so that I would have a way to "restore" the phone to it's original state, should I mess something up when I begin to customize the phone. This would also be good if I decide to sell the phone later should the Galaxy Nexus 32GB model become available, I could put the phone back to its original state.
What is the best way to back up my Galaxy Nexus out of the box?
In addition to backing up the phone, what are some other things that you guys do when you first get a new smartphone?
In terms of backing up, simply create a Gmail Account before-hand, or make one right on the device and check all the boxes that say "Backup my data to Google's servers". It will keep all contacts, apps, WiFi passwords, and even your wallpaper backed up (if you want to delete the backup, there's an option in settings as well). If you prefer local backups, there is a way to do that and even encrypt the backups, but I believe you need to be an Google Apps Account holder.
Enjoy your new phone...... Google backs most everything up so you can hit the ground running!! Being your first smartphone you will have plenty of exploring to do!
Danny
You don't need to back it up. There's an option to restore to factory settings which wipes all your data and returns it to out of the box state.
Even if some disaster happens and it won't boot, you can boot into recovery and restore it from there.
And, Even if the sky falls and recovery doesn't boot you can put it into a low level state called fastboot and flash the stock update using your computer!
Don't panic, there isnt anything you can do to take it to an unrecoverable state, unless you root it, and even then the chances are sooooo low.
The first thing i'd say you should do it look into getting a case or pouch (my personal preference). Especially if you're not use to a touch screen phone you'll probably need a bit of time getting use to the idea that it s a little more delicate.
Next, make sure you charge it overnight.
Lastly just play around with the settings and mess around as much as you like. Figure out what you do and don't like settings wise without worrying about returning the settings back. Then restore to factory settings from the settings menu, and set it up properly with everything you learnt from your playing!
EDIT: I read from your post you wanted to backup the phones virgin state, if you meant data backup, the other posters covered that
Wow, this is going to be easier than I thought. Thanks for all of the great replies and suggestions so far. I am really going to enjoy this phone!!!
edit. I tried to thank all of you guys, but I am only allowed 5 thanks a day and I ran out.
Yes, and this is a great smartphone to start with!! The new settings are really user friendly!
First thing to do when you get this beast is admire it, Its truly a fantastic device. Id recommend watchin a few 1080p HD videos on youtube with the screen brightness at 100% you will looovvveee the screen its truly amazing
I ordered the phone this evening. Since it's Sunday tomorrow I suppose it will dispatch on Monday and arrive this Tuesday.
I'll probably give it a go normally for a week or two, before I customise it (in terms of unlocking the bootloader, rooting, and installing custom roms).
What would be the process of customising once I'm ready?
1) Unlock bootloader
2) Install CWM
3) Root device
4) Install custom ROM
Or is there other appropriate steps? Also, when do I take backups? I understand I should back up with CWM or something?
I'm coming from a BB9700 so this will be a big (good) change for me.

I just unlocked the bootloader and rooted and installed CWM right off so I didn't havetoo mess with the unlock deleting anything (backup with CWM). I'm still happy with the stock 4.0 so thats what im running now.

Oh right yeah. I will most probably unlock the bootloader first (as soon as the device comes) because that does wipe everything right? Does rooting wipe everything too or can that be done later?
No, root can be flashed whenever you want. I just wanted it all done so when I do flash I have a CWM backup of the stock ROM.

Right thanks, and lastly must the phone be rooted for CWM to work?
First thing to do? Patch that damn volume bug If you ever get the patch....
This is the guide I used.... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1362957 Once you flash root just get Rom Manager from the market when your ready and flash CWM. But thats the easy step so you might as well....lol

Will this affect the warranty?
it _could_. Basically you can relock and flash back to a stock rom to take it back to how it was. But if your phone melts or something while overclocked with a custom rom, and no longer powers up - so you can't relock/restore) , they could blame the rom and void your warranty.
Having said that there's not much chance of that happening if you're not a developer trying extreme things. And even then the chances of them trying (/being able) to check the lock in that state is unlikely.
For completeness, there's a guide on how to return an i9250 to stock here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1366806
It even provides a dl link to a backup from a phone with the volume bug OTA update.

Crap, can this be done?

Just got this phone and I love it but the seller on ebay had it rooted and had one of the roms from here on it. They said they would put it all back to stock for me. I like to start with a clean slate if you know what I mean. Well, it is back on gingerbread but root is still there and a whole bunch of other stuff (apps, roms, titanium backup) etc etc in folders on the internal storage. My question is can I safely get this phone back to being stock just like it was from the factory, without the risk of bricking it? I know how to use Odin for the Epic 4G and all. I knew there were some problems with the touch and some phones getting bricked. I have no clue what they may have done to the phone so I am a bit concerned to do anything to it till I hear from someone who has done this (gone completely back to stock) Also, is there a tutorial somewhere?? Thanks guys for your help with this.
Oh here is some more info if it helps looks like I am on Android version 2.3.6, EL29, kernel 2.6.35.7 there is some other info if you need it please let me know I do see a Caulklin's folder in there in the internal storage so most likely they did have that rom on there at one time. There is also a ACS folder in there but when I try to open any of the folders in there I get an error that there is no program that can perform this action. Grrrrrr
Hi.
When messing with Gingerbread, especially stock, bricks are pretty hard to come by nowadays.
Here is what I suggest:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1433101
(from what you said, you probably understand this already)
Just run the EL29 OC. You'll be good to go.
In terms of the internal storage, just delete it all or run a format. You won't get yourself in trouble that way, it's just the internal storage.
If you're concerned about the data wipe brick, that is only on ICS. So since you're on GB, it is not a problem (and totally unrelated to clearing internal storage.)
Post back if you have any questions or anythin'.
If you are on gingerbread then there is no danger of the EEMC superbug(As far as I've heard/read). As for reseting I don't have a link to a tutorial off the top of my head, however the process is pretty simple. Start searching through the development forums for the stock odin files and then flash them. I can try to find you a tutorial/links tonight but I don't really have time right now...besides the search function works the same way for you as it would for me! Feel free to ask if you need anything else!
Hahaha MochaCharok beat me to it!
Thanks guys. The phone at one time was on an ICS rom and yes I can search for it. I just wanted to make sure before I did, that this could be done. So, I will see about finding the tutorial and how to go about getting the phone all back to factory like. I know I am so anal this way, but I really do like to start with a clean slate before I do anything to any phone. thanks again guys I will holler if I run into any problems. LOVE this phone though.

When you activated the phone on your account it should've wiped everything they had on the phone prior and reset it to stock. At least that's what happened when I activated a phone I'd bought from an XDA member. So I started with a clean slate automatically.
It didn't for whatever reason. I had to go in and edit the MIN and MDN manually to get it to activate so maybe that is why. That thing was a HUGE pain to do too. It would not take and kept resetting. Had to try it like 5 times.

If you are stuck with what to do next then take it to a Sprint store and let them wipe it for you.
Good info
As I'm going to try this and hopefully get the missus off her Opt S and onto an E4GT this week this was good timing to cover the process.
Here's what I am planning to do:
1) Flash EL29 + Root
2) Factory Reset from Recovery (which should clear NVRAM if I understand correctly)
3) Call MVNO and have them set up phone
4) Allow hands-free activation to hopefully fill in the blanks
If this works as I hope then I shouldn't have to tinker manually with the NVRAM data.... if not then I have my phone to base most of that off of. And of course it depends if the carrier will let me set the phone up - in the past they haven't been warm to using a different phone unless you purchased it directly from them.
All this just to sit tight until we can get the GS3 probably next year.. yeesh.

[Q] getting a new phone amd using backup

I might be getting a replacement for warranty since I broke my gs3 glass, but I was wondering can I make a backup on my current gs3 and when I get the replacement, can I use my backup for this one and get everything back again? Or is each backup specific to a device?

Not sure about the backups but I had to replace an at&t gs3 and several of the actual ROMs that I had saved did not flash correctly with my new device. I personally would be more cautious then lazy. After reading 100's of threads it seemed that this was due to the updated TWRP 2.6.0. After many trial and errors I discovered this was resolved by the following steps. You will need WinRAR installed on your computer
double clicking on the ROM triggering WinRAR to unzip the file > META-INF> com> google> android >then I removed the updater-script file and replacing it with the same file from a 4.3 ROM using the same steps, then backing out of the ROM that was not flashing properly but clicking on the up one arrow button until I was at the .zip. The ROMs i was having issues with were PAC-man, Liquid, Hellfire, and i747 Captivating rc3.
This was after I tried updating the modem, bootloader, firmware, formatting data in TWRP and a few other steps. But I would think the backups would work as long as the phones are the same firmware etc but to be cautious I would make new backups and use the old ones as a last resort in the event you no longer have access to the original ROM.
Im very lucky and thankful to have access to the plethora of knowledge here and owe it all to the developers and contributors of XDA. Many thanks to all. :victory:
