Just thought I'd share what I've run across so far. After updating to rc33 the market would not work, I have since done a wipe, tried installing a complete them I converted to rc33 and it gets stuck on the second boot screen, so I decided to play with some files and see what could be causing it. I removed the framework-res.apk and replaced it with the stock one. Now I'm getting to the android logo screen, so something may have changed with framework and I am using the template to create this theme. I noticed I was still getting txt messages even though I was on the android logo screen, I've seen this before when I removed Launcher.apk and didn't replace it. So I replaced my launcher with stock and it boots up my theme, sorta.
I have a list of icons that do not take the new icons i've created.
Amazon
Camera
myFaves
Market
Pictures
Settings
Superuser
Terminal
Voice Dialer
Voice Search
Youtube
Everything else is working just fine and copied over. What kinds of problems has anyone else run into? I'm done for the night, gonna work on it some more tomorrow
**Update
including a link to a modified jf rc33 file that frees up system space by removing media files

I can't get past the Android screen. Is there a way to go back to RC30?
I updated to RC33 and had Buuf installed before the update. Installed the RC33 first then the radio, no issues. It even kept my Buuf wallpaper.
I just installed the light version of Buuf that the creator released a bit ago and had no issues updating that. Maybe he can shed some light

did you make a back up with Nandroid? You can also put RC30 update on your SD card and boot into recovery console and update back from there.
Not sure how the new Radio is going to work with RC30 though
any theme creators wanna chime in?
I am not a creator but I have some input I guess. It is very puzzling.
I edited Stericson's stock theme template, changed app icons (removed some apps) resigned each APK, modified the framework-res.apk (did not touch any xml files, and tried to only modify images I thought were changed to create Blue Star 5 - my basis for theming). I zipped it up, signed the zip. And updated my phone.
It took a while to get past the android logo (which by the way did not change color as I expected with the new framework files), but eventually booted up for me. No problem. My case may be special, because before I applied my update I removed some stock APK's and all the stock ringtones, ensuring I had room to spare on my /system partition. I removed amazon, email, and IM - the APK's and ODEX's. My update zip that I used initially to apply my theme contained :
All APK's except those listed above - resigned all that I modified.
And JUST the framework-res.apk
I have since modified some more files in the framework and created another update.zip that just included that file - it applied just fine.
However, no one else has been able to install this theme on their phone (that I know of), and I can't figure out why. Maybe it is the space that I had free?
I am at work right now but when I get home I am going to start from scratch. last night I was using stericson rc33 and was installing the hole drawable folders to the apk.did not think there are new images in some of the apk.that is what you get when you try to get a theme out fast and I am going to look to make sure the images are still the same name .there is some new apk. in rc33 and not just voicesearch.apk and tmoimplugin.apk and like i said at work so i don't have the names rc30 has one apk. not in rc33
yeah tmoimplugin.apk is where all the emoticons for Im are stored.
I just tried editing the clock in launcher and applying it but it didn't work. Maybe it does have somehthing to do with system being too full, that could explain why only some icons are changing.
I installed a theme and now I'm stuck on the Android screen.
I have RC 33 and I tried wiping data and still won't work.
Help Please
Anyone know how to get rid of the theme and wipe everything back to RC 33?
I don't have access to my sd card so I can't reinstall RC 33.
Can anyone help me?
please don't spam the boards, this thread is about figuring out what issues are keeping us from installing themes. If you don't have access to another computer you can't reflash the jfrc33 update

I think you are on to something with this, I removed the amazon app then reflashed one of my update files and now my custom my faves icon showed up. Of course i got forceclose on a few things and my phone wouldn't find service. I wonder how we see how much free space is in system
I am not spamming.
Obviously I installed a theme which caused my phone to screw up.
Don't worry I'll try and figure it out myself, thanks for your help.
Possible solution to RC33 theme crisis!
Ok I'm not entirely sure how or why this works, but with any luck a sharper mind will! Whenever i replaced the application icons or frame images the phone hangs at boot and i'm forced to unplug and restore via nandroid. However if i copy the image file, edit it with gimp and then put it back (resigning both the apk and the zip, it updates perfectly. At present i have modified about half of my icons and got a new splash screen. I just thought i'd share this success and hope someone can work out whats different about the new icons etc.
three posts in 10 minutes is spamming. starting a new thread would have been better
I am not sure what changed but i tried copying the PNGs i changed in framework-res from FadetoBlue and it won't go past the first screen. But i did try editting a bunch of files from RC33 and it works fine. So i think most the themes will need to be rebuilt from RC33.
Just my 2cents. hope i am wrong though.

From terminal emulator or ADB run "df".
Try removing some stock APKs from your update file, and see where that gets you. Of course, remove them from your phone.
Safe ones are (if you don't use them) com.amazon.mp3, email, IM. You can remove the apks and odex's if you don't use those programs. That's what I did and my theme flashed fine on my phone, but not on others (who probably have those files installed) also I removed the stock ringtones, you can just pull the whole /system/media folder and push it back after testing.

I just copied pngs as well, and it did work for me. I think Stericsson hit it on the head when he mentioned free space in my other thread. Definitely an avenue to explore.
yeah this is a free space issue, with the stock rc33 update I only have 352k avail in system, I just made a file with only app icons being changed, by rebuilding from scratch and now system has 0 available and not all my icons flashed over, infact it even removed myfaves.
I am confused. I am trying to theme the stock twitter widget (com.htc.TwitterWidget.apk). I am only changing one image, the large logo. Every time I try to push it back to the device it is gone. Its not on the home screen anymore and its not available to choose from under htc widgets or android widgets. It is however on the device I looked through linda file manager and I see it there. I have restored with nandroid and tried again a few times with no luck. I have even tried to push the original com.htc.TwitterWidget.apk and it does the same thing. I am not sure why its doing this. I have used this same procedure to mod the clock widget and it worked flawlessly. I am pushing it to /system/app/ which is the same place that I pulled it from. if anyone can help I would appreciate it.
Hey there,
I got a HTC Desire with Froyo and the lastest update. Rooted and S-OFF as well.
I was just wondering which apps that came with the Desire standard that I can actually safely remove without breaking the OS/Phone.
Mainly I am concerned about these apps as I don't use them or has a replacement for them:
* Footprints
* Friendstream
* Gmail (I use K9 instead)
* Mail (Again K9 used instead)
* News
* News and Weather
* Peep
* Stocks
* Teeter
Those are the apps I would like to get rid of, and prefebly their widgets too if it possible. But which of them are safe to simply delete without causing random errors and/or breaking of the OS.
Can't remove FriendStream as it's leave the phone in a constant sync loop - it's linked to FB contacts being linked to your phone book

You can if you want but it won't sync. I just unticked it to stop syncing. You can remove a fair few amount of system apps. I got rid of maybe half of them. But what you listed if fine and won't mess around with anything. Just make sure to back them up and then install them if anything goes wrong.
And I will still be able to use market?

Market (Vending.apk) isnt linked to any of the others. You'd know that if you used Cynaogen with Gapps. It's plain Google.
But I don't and im not really into beginning using custom roms just yet as they don't seem stable enough for me just yet .
Now I just need to find a moment of peace to go digging for the correct way to remove apps and then having the time to do a full backup and get started
u can remove teeter n stocks n footprints .. i had long ago didnt face any problems but better to do a nandroid backup n delete watever ud like to your hearts content..n if fails just restore the rom !
Is there a GUI program available to delete those unwanted apk files, or does it have to be done through ADB?
If you're rooted look at Android Commander - still needs adb but it's a GUI. I use it and its easy!

I have rooted, but Android Commander claims it can not get root. So that one is a no go. And Droid Explorer crashes when I try to uninstall, and just reloads the page when I try to delete something

You can use Titanium Backup to delete any system apps you want as long as TB has super user permissions.
I personally delete the following:
stock (dcs apk and dcs service also)
teeter
peep
twitter
If you are using a sense based rom, do not delete any widgets else rosie utility (sense) will keep crashing when you try to use any widgets.
Here is a list compiled by baadnwz (of insertcoin fame)
Safe to remove apks from /system before flashing or after in order to free some space
If you delete those you will loose the HTC Book Reader
EReaderLibrary.apk
EReaderViewer.apk
EReaderWidget.apk
HTC Stock will be gone
com.htc.StockWidget.apk
DCSStock.apk
Stock.apk
HTC Mail will be gone if you don't use exchange or you use k9 mail you can delete
htcmailwidgets.apk
Mail.apk
HTC Radio
com.htc.FMRadioWidget.apk
HtcFMRadio.apk
HTC News reader
HtcGreader.apk
HtcGreaderWidget.apk
HTC Likes
HtcRecommends.apk
HtcRecommendsWidget.apk
HTC Messages - if you use Handcent you can remove default htc message apks - you dont need 2 apks for the same thing
Mms.apk
htcmsgwidgets.apk
Included live wallpapers, if you dont use them or need them you can delete those too
LiveWallpapers.apk
LiveWallpapersPicker.apk
MagicSmokeWallpapers.apk
Mode10Wallpapers.apk
VisualizationWallpapers.apk
Flickr- well if you dont use it for uploading ur pics its safe to delete
Flickr.apk
HTC Sense - if you prefer launcherpro or adw or whatever and dont need htc sense you can delete
Rosie.apk
You can delete any apk from /system that has the word widget into his name if you don't need it, i for one remove all widgets i dont use (90% of widgets present :B). But if you delete them from zip before flashing or via adb after flashing you might encounter "ghosts" widgets in widget list #ff3ccc3 for example will be a widget - and if you select it rosie.apk will crash. Don't say I didn't warn you. Best is to have s-off and uninstall them via titanium backup

What about these?
Gmail.apk
Gmail.odex
Cause I don't use the build in Gmail app either. Unless removing this one breaks all the Google Syncs ?
After going through a long list of stuff to remove I still got weather and News & Weather I would like to get rid of. But what are their proper names?
Doing the installorama I sadly realised that at some point during the process apparently facebook breaks so that it will no longer sync the profile images to people >_<. I very much like that feature, so is there any files I have to avoid for that not to break?
barebone experimenting
First of all, baadnewz, thanks for oa beautiful and well working rom. And I totally respect your (or anyone else's) choice to ignore this post. I'm not expecting anyone to wast their energy on dummies like me. I will keep on searching and trying on my own anyway.
Used leeDroid for a long time but this rom is fantastic.
I am a noob, but not a stupid one. This is the first time I post, after having done my own experiments, testing, searching, reading, learning (I hope) and of course, failing a lot. I'm addicted to deleting apps I don't use.
I work in the area of personal development and I research a lot, so I use my desire as a pure work tool with Docs2go, ezPDF, iReader, PowerAmp, SpringPad, ThinkingSpace, Dolphin HD and TextEdit as my main apps plus helpful apps like AdFree, AutoKiller, BookmarksToSD, BrightnessControl, DesktopVisualizeR, DropBox, LaunchKey, QuickSysInfo, RootExplorer, SetCPU, SuperUser, TitaniumBU, WirelessTether and obviously XDA. Occasionally I download a game but if I'm not using it enough I uninstall it after a back up with Titanium for possible later use.
Other than that I love sense, so I leave the Calendar (+widget), FriendStream (+widget), HTC-Mail (+widget), News (+widget), settingsWidget, WorldClock (-widget), PhotoAlbum (-widget), Messages (-widget), People (-widget).
I also have a few apps like barcodeScan and stuff, but no big space user, except Adobe Flash (do I really need flash if I don't watch film online?).
I think this was all... Yes, everything else is deleted from the zip file, including everything in the resource catalog (wallpaper and stuff) - I only use the wood skin and a wood wallpaper. I deleted some fonts and replaced those with dead files with the same names (stupid maybe). Deleted clock widgets and slideshow. Deleted all media files except for one of each. I also deleted all boot animation zips. I tried to delete libraries that looked like they were connected to apps I deleted, but not anymore. I'm not sure if this was the season, but different functions stopped responding, so I try to not touch lib files and files I don't know. Anyway, all this worked until I tried to do the same with a clean wipe 1.9.5 ? Big problems all the time!? I also tried flashing 1.9.5 on top of 1.9.4. but this worked much as bad. So I'm back on my 1.9.4 restore point...
I love to free up as much memory as possible, at the moment: Internal Storage 117mb, System Storage 77,5mb and Memory 206mb. I believe this is pretty good,or!?
To take some advantage of your latest rom baadnewz, I flashed 2.6.32.29-insertcoin-kernel and lower_voltage_UV_flashable on top of my "barebone" 1.9.4 - donno if this improves anything really, but now everything is working like heavens....
I have tried some kitchens and done some adb, but the kitchen bit feels wrong as long as I don't really understand what I'm doing and what's happening behind the scene..
So, in other words, I have a very stripped down iNsertCoin rom, and I will keep on trying and searching/learning more....
My big question is:
Is different file/apps/scripts/lib and more, dependent on each other, so deleting some will lead to loops and/or errors/fc? Can I edit code/script to support everything I delete?
Is there a place where dummies like me can learn the basics about Android programming, so to be able to understand my question before this one? And YES, I have been looking for this for a long time with no success...
Keep up your brilliant work baadnewz, and thank you so much for all your effort!
Sent from my Desire using XDA App
hello everyone, i already used the forum search and google but that didnt help me out, so i have to ask here i think...
since i tried out the "black status bar" in the rcmix3d tweaks (runnymede 2.5.1 rom), a few icons like wlan and gps are now the old ones and especially the gps icon is now realy annoying because everey second it switches from old to new icon (the same goes for the "deault status bar" tweak)
so i tried to replace the systemUI.apk in /sd-ext/app-s (which is actually the same as /system/app) with the original apk from the rom zip-archive, but after i do that, it comes to a force close of systemUI and after restarting the desire the status bar is not even there...not until i run the rcmix3d tweak for the white (or black) systemUI
my question now: why cant i just replace the systemUI.apk with the original one? do i have to consider any other files?
thanks for all answers
Framework files are a collection. framework-res.apk, Systemui.apk and com.htc.resources.apk are interdependent..the former two have to be replaced together.
now i've repladed framework-res.apk and after that systemui.apk, but now after restart ive got boot animation loop (repeats the whole time)...can i do something without restoring backup? because the last one is a bit older and i dont want to lose all user data :S
ps: ive backed up the both files for sure...
or you can try and reflash the same rom again without wiping anything.
you can maybe do this if the only option you have left is a complete wipe already. this might not be logical but who knows.
would be a possibility, sure...but before i would like to try to solve this problem somehow without installing anything new :S
can i somehow gain access to the root directory of the phone and paste the original files there, when it doesnt boot?

is there something like qtadb for fastboot instead of adb?

You mean you can't see the SD card? I was thinking maybe you can push the apks using a flashable zip.
I'm running Xylon 2.1.1, which is based on 4.2.2
I recently thought it would be great to copy the systemui.apk file, change some of the icons and replace it. It didn't work and somehow it made my status bar disappear. I put the original file back, but that didn't fix it. I then wiped the cache, did a dirty flash of the same ROM and wiped the cache again, and I still have the same problem.
Also I'm using a system theme (Flow) and it's not really applied properly, some interfaces aren't themed, if that helps.
Anything I can do short of doing a factory reset? I know I haven't enabled expanded desktop or anything.
I've reinstalled different versions of the same ROM multiple times and it still hasn't fixed the problem, I'm starting to think there's a bigger problem here. Could I have downloaded a virus? I'm always careful about installing apks but still...
Also is it possible that when I messed with systemui.apk I broke something else?
A re-flash of the ROM should have fixed it so I dont know what to tell you there. As far as replacing system files, make sure you set the permissions to what they are supposed to be or else they mean nothing to the OS. And if your systemui.apk file isnt working right, I would think more than just your statusbar would be messed up.
I'm not entirely sure what you mean by setting the permissions, I did "fix permissions" a few times in TWRP. And it does seem like my systemui is completely borked actually:
-No status bar
-No navigation bar (I usually have it disabled because I use gestures, I tried to enable it and nothing happened)
-Aforementioned theme problem
-Can't change the wallpaper from the default phase beam one
I'm getting worried that it's some kind of virus that's sneaked its way in to my other apps. I've tried going through /system/app and /data/app but I haven't seen anything that I don't remember installing. I might try an antivirus but the ones on Android seem to be more focused towards real-time protection and that kind of thing, rather than getting rid of things that are already there.
Anyway thanks for your reply
I fixed it! I'll post what I did in case someone has this problem in the future:
Settings - apps - all - SystemUI
For me there was an option to "uninstall updates" which I'd never seen before, so I hit it and after a reboot everything is fine. I was getting pretty worried there...
You arent going to just get a virus out of nowhere. Contrary to what people believe, viruses are pretty rare on Android. So dont worry so much about Viruses.
You not knowing about changing permissions is most likely what happened. Most file browsers will let you change permissions to a file if you have root access. I use Root Explorer and its pretty easy. Whatever file you make changes to need to have the same permissions the other apk files in that folder in the end.
But I'm glad you got it working.
