[Q] rooting: finding the correct guide? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
I am sure someone has already asked.. but haven't found an answer yet.. will keep searching though..
I am trying to find the 'correct' guide to rooting my desire..
I've looked through a lot of guides from a lot of sites.. and all are old... older.. like this summer, or older..
Some mention having to install Hboot, some say.. you don't need to..
some want you to use unrevoked, some say you shouldn't...
Is there a guide that is updated? that actually works right off the bat?
I am a total rooting newb.. I've read about it.. but still standing at the bottom of the ladder..
Hoping someone can guide me... !

You should use the unrevoked method.
Do a search on xda, I don't think the process has changed in the last few months.

As mikep99 said, check the unrevoked method.

[q] help the needy!

Well, i recently bought a desire hd(shifted from windows mobile), well i am rather scared to brick my device, so i would really appreciate if someone could direct me into the correct path of flashing my phone with cyanogen's Roms, at the moment, i have done reading, but i still have doubts and i cant really digest all the information given out there in certain threads, so please do help me! Thank You.
I would follow the Cyanogenmod wiki for completeness, this will taje you by the hand from stock to CM goodness
well, thank you, but i have a question, i have already rooted my phone using visionary, so i must i still root it using the method in the wiki?
That CM method is manual, and very complicated compared to the methods in this forum. You do not need to root using RATC when you have Visionary.
Ok, so yeah I have rooted with visionary, so in the wiki it mention that installing engineering hboot isn't necessary. So should I skip that step? Do I need to flash a new radio in order to flash cynogen mod? I am sorry for asking ridiculous questions. But I am rather worried to brick my beauty.

I personally would recommend flashing the hboot and also Radio S-OFF'ing, and I would recommend flashing the latest radio as it seems to improve battery life.
The reason I recommend the manual CM method is not every one has access to windows machines which many of the one click tools require,.
confusing, i am sorry, really and truly am, i am a noob with 0 knowledge on this, but i have flashed around with windows mobile though, please do help me, just guide me, small baby steps would do, spare me some of you time. Please and thank you,.

yes.. probs rooting.

Hey all, new here to posting although use this site alot for the quick fix answers ive had in the past.
How ever decided i would try rooting my desire z as i was looking for that extra control over everything and to loose some of that bloatware just like many of you.
Only thing im having trouble with is actually getting a successful root, im not one to just ask without looking of course but in actual fact ive been at this since 11ish this morning (8hours ago) with no luck. Ive tried about 5 different methods (from xda users such as 'Aegishua' and 'gtrab' guides to a random google searchs also) to no luck at all. Had quite a fair few errors pop up during the process of trying but so far my DZ is still intact and working fine but with S-ON still.
Im not here to ask for someone to explain a fool proof way to root my phone i was just hoping that someone may b able to point me in the right direction of a guide that should hopefully bring some success.
I have an unbranded Desire Z running 2.2.1 (originally 2.2) on Vodafone UK. i could list software details but im hoping someone could either tell me i can't root it since the new security update in 2.2.1 or could pass on a link to a guide that may work for me.
Sorry to sound long winded but its been a day full of "wtf's" amungst other phrases so im just a little lost and confused
Thanks in advance
Matt
if you have adb working and are comfortable with it, use the wiki method..
do you know what firmware version you are? if you are 1.72 or above, you need to downgrade to 1.34 before you will be able to root successfully.
Check in dev section, there is something bout debranding and rooting for DZ and shows what newly one has issue, also you could try the xda wiki methond gfreev.05

Before trying to root you need to follow the step above. This is mainly the mistake people make when they try to root the Desire Z if your a new comer, this is words from the wise. Lol
Your firmware is probably 1.85 or something higher than 1.72 by the looks of things which just means you need to downgrade. But the complicated part is actually getting the downgrade to recognize your vodafone branded Desire Z's unique CID. That's where a goldcard comes in handy because it bypasses the CID check.
Anyways, all you need to do is make a goldcard to downgrade. If you get any errors then post the exact errors word for word if possible.

[Q] Really confused :S

Hey,
After the news that HTC ain't gonna update to gingerbread, I've made the decision to root my phone. But I'm really confused what to do. What method do I use? Can anyone give a link to the method they used and worked? I've searched the web and they all say different things :S
Ever seen the stickies on the development thread??

[Q] BEST Root Guide For G2

Okay,
All I want to know is the best way to perm root my HTC G2. I have google searched and went through forums on xda and a few other sites. And all it did was give me a headache. Lol If anyone can help me with this, Please get back to me via this post or pm me. Thanks for your time! >_<
The Wiki method. Here it is:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/HTC_Vision#Rooting_the_Vision_.28G2.2FDZ.29_and_DHD
XDA User strawmetal had also done a detailed guide but I can't find it now.
The gfree/visionary method is another option that is pretty safe and easy, if you're still on 2.2. Not to be confused with the visionary perm root method.
The wiki method is the best way, but can be difficult if you don't know how to use adb. If you need to downgrade your phone, you'll have to learn adb anyway.
Please don't go anywhere near the Visionary tool. Use the method in the XDA Wiki. It might look confusing at first, but read it carefully and if you don't understand something then ask about it here, there are plenty of people who can help you.
There's a guide to setting up and using adb linked from my signature (if you are reading via a brower and not something like the XDA app).
Sent from my Desire Z running CM7.
Use the wiki method. It looks confusing but once you get into it it is not hard at all. Just follow the instructions to the letter.

Sweetness!
Thanks Guys! I will go with the wiki guide as I'm familiar with adb and I have 2.3.4, So do I downgrade?
Yes, you have to downgrade first.

How long should phone take to reboot after final step in gaining S-OFF
Have a quick question. Followed Strawmetal's guide for my G2, for both downgrading and gaining perm root. Got to final step both MD5#2 and MD5#3 checksums matched as they should. All previous steps matched also. So the final step then is type reboot. I did so, phone rebooted, but now 5 minutes later it's still on the "htc" screen. Impatient noob or brick?
It's not a brick if it displays anything ;P

Any update?
I actually think I may have even done a battery pull around then... but I'm not quite sure and would not suggest it.

New to the Vision

Hi
I had a p350 for ages, finally got a Vision, and now I'm stumped as to how to push a new kernel/baseband/rom to it.
Searching the forum gave me nothing of value, can anybody possibly link me a tutorial?
Think of baseband as radio, just so you don't go looking for it
The best way to root your phone to do all these things is to exploit with gfree, which will probably require a downgrade first.
Just do an xda or Google search for one of three guides, or all three, the more reading you do the better
Xda wiki vision
Cyanogenmod wiki root HTC desire z
Strawmetal PDF guide root HTC g2 dz
Don't use any other guide but the ones mentioned and you'll be fine, if your confused on what to do after root search the general section of this thread and find a tutorial made by rizzoizzo to flash your first ROM and more

Cheers, it was just the first few things that had me stumped.
I realize that this is still not quite the right forum, but I am new to the vision much like the title of the thread would suggest :|
Alright, I got SlimRom 4.2.2 to boot I just have to go and change to DPI to something acceptable for my sister's standards xD what in the world is 4ext recovery? I know 4ext is a file system format or something of the sort, but I have never heard of it as a recovery...
Please point me in the direction of you "Stupid Questions" thread, or what you have as an equivalent. Most device forums has it sticked xD
First thing you need to know is how to root properly, there are a few ways to gain root but the o lay good way for this phone is with the gfree method, if you did any other way fix it now before you end up with headaches. A post above explains where to go
Next being your new to HTC, I highly suggest learning fast boot
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=27796375
I also have a more comprehensive yet unfinished guide at xda-u, but this will due and will also get you 4ext recovery (ext 4 is a partition type, 4ext is the best recovery made for android)

Knowing what's here ahead of time before you run into a problem can help
First time flashers on the vision may be helped here

I'd link you more guides but its a pain on a tablet, just let me know if you need a hand. And yes there should be a new q&a thread made up for this forum with all the proper links... If anyone want to help out this community a massive set of updated links to the right stuff would be great and certainly warrant a sticky

Thanks, looks like I got some reading to do...
