Hi everyone,
I've downloaded the latest OTA update (1.7.405.2). The phone reboots and starts the update process but fails at some point by displaying the red triangle hazard.
Could some please tell me what's going on? I never had any problems installing OTAs before.
I have Visionary installed with PermRoot.
Your help is greatly appreciated.
I got the same problem, first OTA on my phone.
Seems like the PermRoot breaks the update.
There are countless other threads saying basically the same.

You could try installing via bootloader, but your DHD would return to factory settings.
Download This ROM. Rename it to PD98IMG.zip and place on your SD Card.
Turn off your DHD (Disable FastBoot) and power on holding VOL DOWN.
Your DHD will then apply the update itself. With the new update you will not be able to root, HTC have fixed the exploit Visionary+ used. A new method to root will have to be found.
It could be worth having a sticky mentioning that being permrooted stops the updates from performing with instructions to unroot the phone possibly?
I have made an update without any problems. I had stock ROM (no root, nothing). Downloaded around 40 MB, installation process took about 5-10 minutes. I have noticed after update - during video rec camera became smoother (better), aslo before the update I had a problem with 3g internect connectivity. When I switched on the Router on my DHD, 3G connectivity used to went off (dissapear) from the bar. And I had to switch it off mannualy and on again to make it work. After update this is gone! Now router works perfect on DHD.

I had visionary+, permroot, all htc aps on stock. Update took a loooong time but my DHD turned on
I think PermRoot does not break the update.

Yes, permroot does not break the update because it does not change or remove anything on /system. It just adds su and Superuser.apk. As soon as you remove something stock, or change anything stock (like build.prop) it breaks.
Hmmm,,,, I am kindoff waiting for root,,, else its no fun,,

Help
Hi guys. I have a 1 week old DHD. Its not rooted, i dont even deleted any HTC software. I didnt use anything strange. I used launcher pro but doesnt matter...
I get the same red rectangle... Do you know why? And how can i solve it?
Don't upgrade it the official way. Unless you are 200% sure you don't need root.

I rooted my EVO using unrevoked3 (the one you download and do from your computer, NOT the one that you download straight to the phone) and now my phone won't update to froyo. The progress bar gets about a fifth of the way done and then it goes away and gives me an exclamation point error screen and freezes my phone. Is there a way I can update to 2.2 without losing all my data?

You do realize you will lose root if you update to the OTA 2.2, right?
Yep, but I don't really care. I just need to figure out how to get this to work

Just curious, but why would you want to get the OTA 2.2, when you can keep root and flash to one of the nice, existing 2.2 ROMS already out there?
yep just run simple root and flash to the stock rooted. very simple.
I was able to flash netarchy's rooted stock Froyo using Unrevoked3 from the ClockwordMod recovery. No need for simple root.
You will need to get the 1.47 rom from shipped roms as well htc sync. Search the xda forums for the procedure. I did mine yesterday and it worked for me.

I'm having the the EXACT same issue! Have you figured it out?! If they are updating the way they suppose to I wouldn't have to root my phone! It sounds like they are so I would rather have the "official" Froyo 2.2

Bros, please help
My Desire is running Froyo 2.2 and I rooted it.
There is an OTA today for version 2.29. I already download it. But when it restarted and installed, it failed with error like wrong signature or sth like that.
Please help me if you got any clue on this.
warmest regards,
Don't apply OTA updates on rooted devices, either use a custom rom which is based on 2.29 or use a 2.29 RUU and root again.

Exactly. I think you have too little knowledge of rooting. Don't even think about the word "official" when you rooted your phone.
Actually I toggled Sig off in Clockwork mod and
was able to install the update, it went well and the phone was working
fine, i did loose my root tho , so I had to root again....
I am a beginner, so don't take this as advice, cause I don't know
the downside off togling Sig off. I just wanted to state that in fact
it is possible to ota a rooted device..

Thx for your advice.
It's generally considered that if you're rooted you should not apply an OTA as you won't truely be back to 'stock' and it can cause issues further down the line. It can be done, though, as highlighted above but if people just used some common sense as opposed to just saying OK to any updates this question wouldn't get asked 30 times a day
Hi Guys,
I bumped into something earlier and i want to ask about it.
"System Software Updates" does not work if you have S-Off? Meaning you will not have the automatic OTA update should HTC release any software updates like gingerbread anytime soon..
Can anyone explain this to me or atleast clarify? Any feedback is greatly appreciated.
Much Thanks!

As far as i understand (and as long as you do not install any other custom ROM than the DHD stock ROM), the system software updates should work fine. But if you have deleted some apps or changed something to the system then you will not be able to install the updates!
Do not worry so much about this though, guys here on xda will have a better version for you as soon as htc releases any update.
but this is only specific to changing the STOCK ROM to a custom one. i believe updating and stock app like Adobe Reader won't affect your functionality to do Software Updates right?

Yes. As long as you keep all the apps that came with your DHD, you can download and install software updates (does not matter if you are rooted or not).
But if you have done ENG S-OFF and installed engineered version of H-BOOT and then CWM then you have to flash back the original recovery i guess...
Yes you need stock recovery sure ota.

okay..one more clarification and i'm done..forgive me for so many stupid (it may seem) questions..i'm helping a friend who does not understand english..LOL
so if I have Stock HTC ROM 2.2 Perma Rooted + Radio S-OFF + Super-CID + Eng S-OFF and i did not install CWM and never installed any custom roms (followed jkoljo's one click S-Off and Eng S-off Tool) then i should be okay with Software Updates over the air right?
Once again, much thanks!

Only if you haven't removed anything from the /system directory.

I'm not happy to see you, that's a Desire HD in my pocket.
Actually I have observed the same behavior after downgrading and setting radio & ENG S-off.
I haven't changed anything else.
I used jkolio's excellent tools and instructions.
Now don't get me wrong. Not one bad word about jkolio. As far as i'm concerned the man is a life saver. Losing updates OTA is annoying, but compared to losing root is a no brainer.
I'm simply reporting an observed behavior.

Thanks for your thoughts It is actually Visionary that causes you to lose OTAs, you can try undoing permroot. My tools do not modify /system in any way.

Hi again.
@ Jkolio: You are quite welcome .
Regarding OTA:
I tried the suggested approach. In a nutshell: Yes, it did the trick. However not without a couple of hitches along the way.
1: Unrooted w/Visionary r14. DHD reboots as expected.
2: Test using screenshot it. Prog. reports root missing. So far so good.
3: Attempting OTA update. (running 1.32.405.3). OTA tool hangs at the checking phase. Just as if root persisted.
Thinking:"No sweat" "will reroot & report result"
4: Temproot (Visionary). A OK.
5: Attempting permroot. Getting "error - Force Closure" msg. about ½ sec. before DHD reboots.
6: During reboot msg. recieved about OTA update!!!
7: Updating to 1.32.405.6
8: Update done. Reboot. Receiving multiple program force closures including rom manager.
9: Uninstalling botched prgs.
10: attempting reinstall via Market. Market also force closes.
11: Hard Reset.
12: Everything now appears to be humming along nicely & am now running 1.32.405.6. but som setup work to be done.
So. Before you try this. backup what you´re not prepared to loose.
Regards
ELO

Hey guys, I should have posted this about a month (maybe even longer) ago, but I've been dealing with some health issues and couldn't be bothered. First off I have a rooted phone (with S-OFF) but I like keeping the stock sense build. I upgraded OTA to 2.2 some time ago, then there was an OTA update a few months after that (which I was able to install without any problems after I replaced a couple of files that had gotten modified), now this newer OTA update refuses to install.
It tells me it needs to reboot to start installing so I click the button to reboot and it counts down, but it never reboots. Is it somehow detecting that my phone is rooted? I would like to have the most up to date OTA update installed on my phone at all times so any help or ideas would be great (also I'm sorry if this has been covered before, I did search but I've been afk for a bit so I might have missed some things).

Blah I have to go back to 2.2 stock? Oh well, it's not the worse thing in the world (I already had to do it once) and those are great instructions (plus I've wanted to have the latest version of Clockworkmod installed for a while and using Unrevoked means I won't have to mess with the payload/su/etc files). Thanks!
I also thought of something (kind of late though). I was using a custom kernel, which might have been the issue too. But I went ahead and re-enabled S-On, however now for some reason my phone is checking for errors on my SD card (no idea how long it will take, or why it's doing that), but does anyone have a link for that 17.7mb file of the 3.26.605.1 update? I found the full RUU, but it's huge and I rather just upgrade than possibly wipe everything out (and I don't know when my phone will have the OTA ready again). Thanks for any help!
Is it necessary to update or downgrade then upgrade the OS?

That seems to be what that linked thread says, but I don't believe that is correct (that's why I am looking for that 17.7mb OTA file). I was able to install the first 2.2 update (aka 2.2.1) without issue after I restored some files that were altered (either by rooting or installing the wireless tether app that's hosted on Google Code). However this OTA update (aka 2.2.2) isn't popping up again for me to install, so I am going to see if I can extract just the upgrade data from the official RUU. I have to wait until later tonight because I need my phone to be operational for another few hours but I'll post back with results (and files if need be =).
Yeah I tried the RUU update and as expected it did a total wipe... bringing back system via nandroid and will try something else.
Edit: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=969973 <= using Jay's thread, which is much like the post that was first given to me in this thread. Not re-enabling S-ON seems to be the problem... lesson learned, don't try shortcuts unless you know what you are doing (and I've been afk from the "Dinc Scene" too long for that =p.
Edit 2: Up to date and 100% working!
I unlocked my wife's (carrier-free) WFS via HTCDev, then rooted it shortly after just fine. After rooting it I did the Link2SD procedure to releave the internal space problem and that went well too.
Some time later an OTA update notification appeared that is 14MB in size. I downloaded & tried to install it, but the phone just reboots to begin the update, then stays on a screen that has the Android robot & an "!" inside a triangle. It never does anything from there, just stays frozen on that screen.
Please can someone help me by showing me the cause & solution, or a way to install the latest WFS OTA manually. Thanks in advance.

Pull the battery and reboot, you will then be able to continue to use the phone as normal.
As for OTA update; it doesn't work on phones with modified recovery e.g. CWM, try searching this forum, all the answers to your question already exist.

Yeah, I did pull the battery before and let her use the phone as usual while I searched for answers, which was some weeks ago. Guess I didn't look hard enough.
Thanks, let me try search some more...

ok...like this...since you are rooted and have custom recovery installed you are not able to complete OTA update.
Here is what you need to do-you need to go back to stock recovery..then update and install OTA.
NOTE: after that your phone BL will be locked again and you will lose root.
NEXT STEP: After updating you will need to repeat the procedure of unlocking with HTC.dev and of course root again if you want that.
more info you can find in the thread in link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1474067
Hope i helped a litlle bit
dont forget thanks button if i did
How a positive conclusion was achieved
Well, after Aef 101's suggestion, I ended up downloading the new RUU 2.13.401.3 from Shipped-ROMs.com, which of course refused to install saying the phone already got 2.17.0000 installed (a version number produced by RUU 2.13.401.2 + HBoot 1.08.0099), so I reduced the version number to the SuperVersion (0.0.0.0) and relocked the the BootLoader with the first tool suggested here.
That allowed me to successfully install the new RUU, but I got the problem spoken of here, of the locked/unlocked field disappearing from the top of the BootLoader because the RUU downgraded the BootLoader to the outdated 1.08.0000. So, I downloaded the new HTC EU HBoot 1.09.0099 from HTCDev, which I linked here and installed it.
After I did that, the BootLoader said it's locked again (the field that had completely disappered after the 2.13.401.3 RUU update, was back to normal), so I just reused the same "Unlock_code.bin" file I got from HTCDev the first time I unlocked, to re-unlock the BootLoader.
Once that was done, it was a quick root with SuperOneClick 2.3.3 and the job was done. I won't be putting any custom ROM(s), so I didn't bother re-adding CWM, in case it gives me hassles on my next update attempt if there is one.
Thank you gentlemen for your responses and I hope my breakdown of how I got it to work in the end helps others that may suffer this dilemma.
