Considering this phone but have some questions. - Defy General

So im thinking of getting this phone but there's a couple questions I need answered.
1. If I were to use the music player would I be able to put the phone in the shower to listen to the music better?
2. How's the screen quality? Is it washed out or fine?
3.How's the battery life with light to moderate usage?
4. How's the camera? I used to have a cliq xt and it took the most amazing pictures. I loooved the picture quality. So how's the camera quality with the flash?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App

1) its supposed to be water resistant to around 3m depth, so in theory should be fine in the shower, but of course, your mileage may vary!
2) for me the screen quality is excellent, I prefer it to my laptop screen; my brother has an iphone3g and he was very envious.
3) battery life, with texting, a few calls, some wifi and angry birds lasted me nearly two days
4) camera is pretty good quality, not amazing, but good enough, the flash is quite bright too and doubles up as a handy flashlight as well

I now know why the Photo quality and Video recording quality on the HTC Desire is bad

It's because of the back cover!! Crazy!
youtube.com/watch?v=bPQAzblZll0[/url]
Clean your phone.
Actually i tested couple of times. And yes pictures do appear crispier and brighter without the back cover. Its due to the lens windows made of cheap plastic
You've made me waste 1.56 minutes of my life. That video was pointless in my opinion. Most photos were either the same quality, or were actually in focus second time round. Should have had both pictures side by side.
Just clean the back case every now and then and it won't be such a big deal.

I don't get why people are always bashing the camera on the Desire. As far as I am concerned, it's excellent. It takes great pictures, they are clear and nice. I think many people are comparing phone cameras to expensive digital cameras. Just this fact alone makes me happy about the camera quality. It doesn't suck, you're just comparing it to something that is obviously going to be better, for the time being anyways. I remember when cameras on phones first came out. The phone I had actually had a camera attachment you could get. The quality was horrible. You could barely make out what you were taking a picture of. I have had lots of devices since then, and every one surprises me with how far cameras on phones have come. The camera on the Desire is great. It's got a great flash, great quality. I take pictures with it all the time, and they look almost as good as my actual digital camera. The flash isn't horrid either. LED flashes used to be little more then a joke. I never considered them even a half way attractive selling point until I got the Desire. It's nearly as good as a normal flash.

[Q] TP2. Really Bad Camera Quality?

Hi all,
I have a touch pro 2, have upgraded from a touch pro, and its an all round better phone than its older brother.
However, the Camera on my old TP is so much better than mine on my TP2. On both the stock Rom, and my Energy rom the picture is total rubbish at all resolutions that its taken from. all the images seem very grainy and distorted compared to my TP.
I have tried cleaning the lens, and that hasnt seemed to make any difference either.
Has anyone else found this?
I completely agree with you on this. I remembered I was watching a video review on this device and they noted that the severity of the camera graininess is carrier specific due to the different battery covers. The other day I took a Pic with the battery cover off just to see if their was a difference and the pic was definitely a little bit sharper.
The clear window on battery cover can severely degrade image quality if scratched or greasy. The TP2 camera takes very nice pictures set at highest resolution and with good/bright light. Not so good in dim/poor light situations.
I've seen the same thing. Detail is all mushy. It reminds me a bit of some noise reduction software set too high. Since the tiny sensor in this phone would be prone to noise (small sensors have small pixels, so their light gathering capability is boosted by amplification, adding noise), so the Tilt2/Touchpro2 may have excessive noise reduction running.
Just a thought.
Images taken w/TP2
I am surprised to hear these comments! I have had a couple people mention how good images look that I have taken (using default settings). I have the T-Mobile version TP2 and am using b16b's AthineOS 21914 (superb) and am OC'd @729mhz. I have attached a couple photos taken recently that show what my device produces with it's camera. I am not a photographer by any means, and the image quality isn't amazing compared to a high-end digital camera, however, for my everyday usage which is somewhat limited to impulsive shooting of animals or car-wrecks & bum-fights, it seems to take fairly decent pictures. I do want to also mention that I take great pains to keep my device clean and use microfibre cleansing material frequently. Also, most of my use is outdoors, I have noticed that indoor usage doesn't give great results unless there is PLENTY of light available. Lack of a flash really disappoints me, however, overall I am very satisfied with my TP2!

[Q] I know it's kind of an older android phone but...Defy questions

Howdy all,
Currently I have a Optimus 7 that's going to be given to my wife, and Telus is going to send me another device due to the issues I'm having with mine.
My options are the cheaper phones that they have and I've been eyeing up the Defy because of it's Gorilla glass and damage resistance. I do a bunch of hiking, caving, etc and I'm in the military which means my phones get roughed up a bit, in very humid conditions and so on.
Now, I know the Defy is a tad old in the way of things, but once rooted and Motoblur is removed how does it stack up?
Basically I use my phone for internet, email, texting, some photos (nothing spectacular expected from phones, carry a camera when I hike too) and GPS (I have Back Country Navigator from when I had a XPeria X10 - http://www.backcountrynavigator.com/content/android-gps )
Anyways, I don't have the cash to roll out for a Galaxy S2 or Atriux or whatever (I have wife, kids and other important things that eat my money). I'd like to know how the Defy has held up.
Thanks
Well, it's the best phone I've ever had.
Some lag on CM7, but I'm running nightly versions, so I don't know if a stable version will work better.
It's a bit too big, but the resistance factor makes it worth. I've dropped this phone so many times, I can't even count. Dropped it on beer once, no damage.
So, yeah, get it, but beware of the lagging once you start installing apps
I don't have any lagging on CM7 latest nightly and neither had any on RC1 or RC1.5. I also have a second defy with tons of games on it and there is no lagging there either.
I'd say the lagging on your phone is not the norm and rather an exception, most running CM7 don't have any issues. You might want to tell us what apps you have installed.
Get the Defy+ if you can.

i can't notice any issue, what did you mean?
The phone just cant compete if you keep it with Stock rom. Its crippled (Software wise) in every imaginable way to keep it to a 200ish $ phone. Once you root it and blow away the stock rom and install Cm7 is just simply amazing.
Motorola just crippled the phone in the kernel so it wouldnt compete against their higher priced phones while having pretty much the same internals.
You can play any of the new games fluently, I'm playing Tegra games like Riptide amazingly well, Galaxy on Fire 2 and quite a few other Graphics/CPU intensive apps and they all run perfectly.
Last week I took my defy to a water park... it did its job very, very well. I have some amazing pics with my girlfriend underwater, got some videos in some high-speed waterslides and so on. All I did was put a bit of duct tape on the USB port to be safe and used a Silicon skin to avoid the battery cover getting opened by handling the phone.
How is the sound quality?
I had many phones and Defy is by far the best in sound quality.
Voice quality in phone calls is great (loud and clear), loud-speaker is excellent - maybe best i've ever heard from mobile phone.
Sound quality on headphones is very good, better than any MP3 player i ever had. And you can trust me, i have trained ears from my home hi-end headphones setup
You would be so unfair to your wife
I carry mine all the time while mountain biking and even after a few wipes (and holes in T-shirts), the Defy is still kicking butts.
The Defy is such an understated phone; it's marketed as a high-entry/middle level but perfoms like a mid-high to high end one once you root it and switch to CM7.
Ignore the comment about lag; it's fast and has no problem playing decent games like Asphalt 6 and other Gameloft games.
Sound is great (on headphones or speakerphone) and if I'd really had to find a downside or two, I'd say GPS performance is so-so in dense urban areas and low-light pictures also so-so - but that is also true for many digital camera as well...
But once again, just don't waste time on Froyo and move up to CM7 right away.
You could try/buy the Defy+, but other than the slightly bigger battery, it brings nothing more than mine on that ROM - in fact it would lack a lot of very useful options. I'd choose all the extras of CM7 over any official Gingerbread (and Blurred) ROM from Motorola any day.
I like it so much that I recommend this phone to all my friendsl so I do the same to you.
So go for it! You won't regret it...other than maybe having the wife yapping about it or constantly borrowing it from you - hehehe!

The Call sound quality is REALLY amazing. When I first bought it a few people to whom I call often actually asked me what I did to my phone since they could hear me perfectly, even with lots of noise around me. And the earpiece is really good.
The speaker phone is by far the best I've heard in a Mobile phone.
The Camera (I got a red leans, tweaked) is crap compared to Cameras, average compared to other phones.
I had an HD2 before and it took better pictures (using android) than 200-300$ Compact cameras, is just insane, so it was a big letdown once I found out the Defy camera just cant compete

Is this the right phone to get?

For those of you that have this phone, and have had it since close to it's release date, what are your opinions?
I am going to be purchasing a new phone, for use with WindMobile in Canada (i.e. it must be an AWS phone). As far as I can tell this is my best option because I use my phone mostly as a camera so my #1 interest is a camera that does not lag and will open quickly. I also am a fairly heavy user for NUMBER of apps. I have a lot installed and switch between them frequently. I don't play games or watch videos so graphics don't matter much.
The kicker here is I am REALLY hoping to keep this phone for 2 years at least. Do you think that this phone will last? Keeping in mind I don't care about being behind on new technology. I only care that it can handle my volume of use and won't sputter and choke to a slow after 6 months use like the one I have now.
I currently have an Optimus 2X but it is dying. It lags incredibly between tasks and the plastic covering the camera is poor quality and I had to rip it off so the lens is mostly unprotected now. I don't want to deal with stuff like this is I am going to buy a brand new phone. Do you think the Xperia ZL is the right choice?
p.s. I saw a review of the camera where the reviewer said that the photos look great on the BRAVIA screen but once on a computer screen are not very good. Has this been your experience? What about printing?
p.p.s. would appreciate comments about how rugged it is also as I work as a nanny with two 24 month old toddlers. Honestly I want the Z due to it's waterproof encasing but it's not sold new up here in Canada.
so my #1 interest is a camera that does not lag and will open quickly.
--> camera itself is the fastest I've seen. First thing you notice is the super smooth and responsive viewfinder.. even in low light. It always feels 60fps. I compared this to HTC ONE and it's a LOT slower..really.
About opening.. opening of the camera app isn't fastest i've seen (can take 3 secs) but because of the dedicated button you can still open it way faster than phones without button.
I also am a fairly heavy user for NUMBER of apps. I have a lot installed and switch between them frequently. I don't play games or watch videos so graphics don't matter much.
--> Ye as with all 2GB phones multitasking is almost instant and apps never really close.
The kicker here is I am REALLY hoping to keep this phone for 2 years at least. Do you think that this phone will last? Keeping in mind I don't care about being behind on new technology.
Then yes. I don't see why this phone wouldn't make it 2 years.
I only care that it can handle my volume of use and won't sputter and choke to a slow after 6 months use like the one I have now.
With 2GB ram it's pretty future proof IMO.
p.s. I saw a review of the camera where the reviewer said that the photos look great on the BRAVIA screen but once on a computer screen are not very good. Has this been your experience? What about printing?
Well, in my opinion, pictures look suberb on the 5" with bravia engine 2..really gives a wow-factor.
When you then watch them on the PC they look kinda normal/bland/boring..so its just the way you look at it
p.p.s. would appreciate comments about how rugged it is also as I work as a nanny with two 24 month old toddlers. Honestly I want the Z due to it's waterproof encasing but it's not sold new up here in Canada.
The back isn't made from glass but very grippy texture. I haven't dropped mine but the phones feels very sturdy and good quality, except for maybe the little flap on the back for sim/SD.
Honestly I think ZL is very underrated and still (even with new models like Z1) ZL is still my favorite.
Thanks for your quick quick reply!! One clarification I have to ask: I understand what you mean about quality depending on the screen. However when you look on your computer do you think the quality fits the price? Let's put this simply: I am tired of my boyfriend's iphone photos looking SOOOO much better than mine. Can I at least compete now? lol

To be honest I really like the camera but the software app just doesn't do it justice. Pictures looked a bit washed out when looked at the computer. You can still install another camera app with less compression effects.
Also, for me the camera opens very quickly, less than 1 second with the latest 267 firmware update.
The phone looks gorgeous with the incredibly small bezel for a 5 inch phone. But if you want an awesome camera phone you really should go with the Galaxy S4. Still the best midrange camera phone I've seen so far is clearly the Nokia Lumia 920 but its a Win8 phone... both phone can be easily unlocked if not offered by Wind and are AWS versions.
Also, lots of people complain about the screen being TFT which is the cheapest technology you can use for a phone nowadays. So the viewing angles aren't good but I personally don't care much. But I think you will notice it right away.
Still, for a lot of other aspects, I prefer the Sony ZL

I just traded it my s3 for an zl very disappointed in camera in dark places there is a ton of noise I have to also take multiple snaps before I can get a shot to have a properly focused pic if I use flash it works fine but using superior auto mode and in a well lit room it still doesn't compare anything to the s3 which had a very quick focus but other then that the phone is well worth it will last you 2 years if you do not abuse it only thing im concerned is the non removable battery... wonder how will it perform in 2 years from now....

Don't use superior auto by default, it adds way too much noise. Try using normal with some basic tweaks, you will see a major difference.
Especially with the latest update.

Well I kind of have the same problem. Own an Optimus 2x and now ordered Zl from an amazon offer (350 euros). I love the white version since - if the black back looks cheap - this is absolutely not the case with the white.
However, I am quite disappointed by the screen. You notice the viewing angles immediately and every time the phone is lying on a table in a darker room, it looks like it is showing a bright Grey picture although background is black. So I wanted to return it.
Then I thought of alternatives, but very successful.. I am looking for a phone with no amoled screen, wo no s4. I really want at least 32gb memory and would be happy if it had a working fm radio like XZL (tried Optimus G and thought that must be a bad joke). The Optimus G was nice, but fm radio crap, and due to non expendable storage, I was really missing USB otg. S4 active would be nice, but no fm radio, feels somehow big and is very overpriced. The new nexus 5 seems to only have 16gb.. LG G2 is very expensive with 32gb. And none of them has a dedicated camera button. So I guess xperia zl is a great package! If only they had included a IPS screen (which can be considered as standard today, even for cheap phones).
Today I looked at the screen in a bright room and then it looked way better than yesterday night when it was dark. So I am thinking of keeping the phone - seems like the package is quite good. Or does anyone of you habe a proposal?

My comments:
The poor viewing angles on the screen aren't as horrible as people make it out to be, the screen is still perfectly good and quite a joy to look at. (plus if you like to be private then it stops people from seeing what you're doing easily)
Picture quality is fine, I have an unlocked bootloader(which I did before TA backups were a thing ;_ and even still everything looks great on the screen. Video quality is pretty good in my opinion. In low light, yes the picture quality does tend to suffer but it's still acceptable for it being a phone, I personally haven't tried tweaking with the settings much besides installing the Z1 camera app port.
If you want to see the quality yourself, here are some photos/videos(mind you the outdoor greenery shots were taken a while ago so the latest updates might have improved things):
http://imgur.com/a/qoqg2#0
http://youtu.be/SXxN14HdeGU
Performance has been pretty good, there are a few things I've noticed which can make it a little laggy, like setting a smaller icon size in Apex and the app Twilight can make scrolling a little laggy, but otherwise performance is snappy.
Something that might be of concern is battery life, due to the non-removeable battery. I can usually get through a day before having to charge. I get about 4-5 hours of video watching, so if I only use the screen for a few hours sporadically(15 minutes here, 15 minutes there) then I can usually push it to 24 hours.
One thing I would really suggest is getting at least a decent screen cover, if not case as well, I have one of those meifeng cases from ebay, it's decent enough quality and it's pretty thin, I don't use it every day though. But the built in screen protector is an absolute lint electromagnet, it's like it's sole purpose was to collect lint, not cool. I picked up a skinomi screen protector, just put it on top of the built in one and it works/looks fine.
One thing I like about the skinomi is that it's slightly soft, so it doesn't scratch easily, but it still a good surface for fingering.
The speaker isn't loud enough to be heard over a concert or some power tools, but if you're just at home or in the car then it's quite adequate, the headphone out is also adequate, though it can be a tad quieter than some might like, depending on headphones used.
The microphones are pretty great, that youtube video? The music in person was ear-screeching, yet somehow the microphones managed to pick everything else up pretty well.
The IR Blaster is fun if you normally use multiple remotes for your home.
I can't really think of anything else at the moment, but feel free to ask and I'll try to answer.
Edit:
Shadowman19: Personally I find the viewing angles acceptable knowing that I'm probably never really going to be looking at my phone from these angles anyways, 99% of the time I'm looking at it is straight on.
Personally I don't own a ZL(I currently own an Ion), but i have seen a couple of Z's(the Z screen is similar to the ZL). Honestly, I don't see the difference when tilting the phone(I can definitely see it on my ion). The poor viewing angle claims are exaggerated.

Flossy Carter Review

Have been hearing mostly bad things about this device since it's release but just watched this review from Flossy Carter who says this is the best mid range phone out there.

It is the best midrange phone. Here are my pros and cons:
PROS:
1) Absolutely gorgeous 6.7" AMOLED screen. So sharp, vivid and bright with superb inky blacks. Bezels are so slim giving the phone a sleek immersive design.
2) Performance is superb. SD675 with One UI is fantastic. Everything is so smooth and lag free and it runs every game with high graphics and zero lag.
3) Battery life is excellent. I'm getting 10 hours screen on time. The 25w fast charger is amazing, it takes only 1 hour 15 minutes to get a full charge.
4) Audio quality through headphones is superb, clean and loud, with dolby atmos supported. In ear headphones which come supplied in the box are very good.
5) Complete package: NFC, Samsung Pay, Always On Display, Navigation Gestures, Dark mode etc.
CONS:
1) Camera low light performance is poor. But this can be fixed with Gcam's Night Mode. Video quality is average and lacks stablization making footage almost unusable. (Can be improved with software update)
2) On screen fingerprint scanner is slow and inaccurate (can be improved with software update)
3) Face Unlock is fast and accurate but it works even with closed eyes (can be fixed with software update)
3) Front panel has Gorilla Glass 3 protection only. At this price point you would expect atleast Gorilla Glass 5. Back panel and frame are plastic but they feel good in the hand nevertheless.
4) No stereo speakers. Speakers audio output is OK, could have been better.
5) 20:1 aspect ratio is a stupid decision from Samsung. Most videos have big black bars on both sides. You need to zoom in to make them full screen which sucks big time.
In general use, as a navigation aid, browsing, music, watching video and making the odd call it is a very good phone. Having used it a couple of weeks I don't regret buying it. Battery has been very good which is one of the main reasons I got it. I haven't had to test the fast charging because it has easily lasted the day, every day.
I don't find the fingerprint that problematic and use it as the only method to unlock the phone except when a password is a required on reboot. I can understand why some are frustrated with it but with a bit of work and practice it works well for me in a second or under 95% of the time and works second or third time on other occasions. It never causes me more than a few seconds pause. A firmware update is apparently on the way to improve it further.
I only use the camera for the odd snap when out and about and it seems fine but I didn't buy it as a video cam or for low light photos and have never used it as such.

Thanks for the reply, good list there and pretty much what Id expect.i was quite impressed watching the flossy Carter review, especially with the camera, seems to be some EIS stabilisation for certain video modes. The fingerprint seems to be an annoyance,. Not do much a problem with face unlock.Gorilla glass 3 is bot of a bummer also
I hear there is an A70s coming in the second part of the year, complete with the world's first 64mp camera on a phone,
Might be worth waiting for

I read it in the news today, hope there will be other improvements other than the 64mp camera.
The upcoming Xiaomi K20 looks very promising, with smaller screen and battery though. I'm waiting for the Xiaomi Mi Max 4, a real multimedia monster. If they stick to LCD it's a no buy for me.

Have to laugh every very time he picks up a phone and says feels good in the hands,
"Ladies you know the procedures"
If a70 is a good phone by any reviewer then they have not considered some of the features which should be present at this price point.
If this is a good phone, then any phone in this price should stand good.
Major cons are
Speakers sound is very low. Have to be 80% or more. it is not loud at all.
6.7 Inch screen is good for nothing.
Type c is only for charging and no additional features.
Camera quality, it is better if we don't talk much on it.
Slow motion and super slow motion are useless.
They are just for marketing and not for use.
6.7 inch screen is great for games as you still have plenty of screen left in middle while your thumbs cover the edges, it's also great for movies it's almost the exact ratio for them
