[Q] Newbie to custom firmware/rooting need advice - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there. I'm intrested in maybe applying a custom firmware desire, but i'd like to know exactly what i'm doing. I managed to debrand my phone to get the 2.2 update awhile ago as o2 were taking ages, have not done anything else. Here is some information on the firmware i'm running.
Android Version: 2.2
Baseband: 32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27
Kernel: 2.6.32.15-gf5a401c
htc-kerneland18-2 #1
Build: 2.29.405.5 CL293415 release-keys
Software: 2.29.405.5
Browser: WebKit 3.1
As i'm a right noob to rooting etc I have a few questions.
1. Is it really worth it, rooting that is?
2. What is the best custom firmware for the desire. (ideally one without htc sense just the standard nexus style layout)
3. If done right what are the chances of bricking my phone
4. Is it hard to do?
Thanks!

The word 'best' is awfully subjective. I, personally, believe for multiple reason, that MIUI is the best rom type available. Some of the interesting features:
- Revamped settings app, with access to many more options
- Privacy mode (very useful, might I add)
- Very very fast (quadrant scores of over 1800 are not uncommon)
- Theme app allows you to apply a theme on the go (much like an integrated metamorph type thing)
- Custom Music, Gallery, Launcher, Lockscreen and Data monitor.
I have been using MIUI as my rom of choice for about two months. I test other roms (like new DeFrost releases sense HD updates, for example), but I keep going back to MIUI.
In particular, the ROM I use (and help develop) is located here:
www.miui-au.com
Josh.

Well I managed to flash a custom rom then after awhile flash back to stock but something is annoying me. I've done a few formats here and there and after all them one of my calendar events is still there??

I am lost, seriously!

Howdy!
I am currently pulling my hair out because I tried so many roms and I lost control over my HTC Desire. I am guessing I am currently on Android 2.1. I want to use a ROM that has no HTC Sense and is rooted. But all those roms are coming with so much annoying extra's I just don't want. And some of those roms tells me that some things are working and some not, that olso scares me.
When I click 'About my phone' I see the following information:
Firmware version: 2.1-update1
Smallband version: 32.36.00.28U_4.06.00.02_2
Kernel: 2.6.29-0cb9f166 (htc-kernel - and18-2 #1)
Build number: 1.21.405.2 CL174215 release-keys
I hope somebody can point me in the direction I want because I am fairly new to the android phones,
Thanks!
i had kinda the same problem as you.tryed many different roms and now i'm happy with opendesire + launcher pro instead of adw launcher.
I think LeeDrOiD Mod might be good for you. Froyo with sense and not much extras. Just need to format and make ext partition to your sd card and you are good to go.
Edit: SPEED READ IS BAD... sorry. I thought u was looking for sense rom. .. lol
Edit 2: LeeDrOiD is still good point to start. I dont run sense either but adw, but i still like to use htc calendar etc.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Thanks guys. I decided to use the HTC default rom and rooted. I'll try from here out to tweak and remove some stock applications.

DeFroST on its own ?

Is it possible to get the DeFroST application as part of a complete ROM, or a can i get it on its own to install ? (without installing complete new ROM)
I see some Stock HTC ROMS that have DeFroST included but i want Stock+Sense+DeFroST hboot 0.83 if possible
I have currently :
I have a Rooted Stock ROM-2.2 +Sense-Froyo (without the OTA update) + Radio version: 32.49.00.32U_5.09.00.20
cheers
im pretty sure that it is not possible to have defrost and sense at the same time as they kind of cancel each other out. i could be wrong though.
closest thing you can get is a couple apps here and there that LOOK like sense, and if you buy launcher pro plus it almost is identical to sense, but as far as i know there is no way to actually have both with each other.
DeFroST is a ROM and not an app you can install on an existing ROM

[Q] Worried HTC One X User

Hello everyone I just wanted to ask you guru's for some advice pretty please. I recently got a HTC One X on Vodafone in the UK for me and a SG3 for my wife and I am starting to seriously regret getting the One X because I have been having some issues and my wifes phone has been awesome.
The issues I have been having is the battery life being much worse than my old phone (Desire HD) also the phone getting warm/hot on the back at the top left.
Here are the details of my phone for reference:
HTC One X - White
Tegra 3 Quad Core Version
Vodafone UK Network
Android Version: 4.0.4
Htc Sense Version: 4.1
Software Version: 2.17.401.2
Htc SDK API Level: 4.23
HTC Extension Version: HTCExtension_403_1_GA_20
Kernel Version: 2.6.39.4-g090b42e, [email protected] #1, SMP PREEMPT
Baseband Version: 2.1204.135.20
Build Number: 2.17.401.2 CL89015 release-keys
Browser Version: Webkit/534.30
Has there been some fixes released at all? or is my phone buggered? I have thought about putting a custom rom onto the phone to hopefully fix it, is this the way to go? If it is what is the best ROM to pick up at the moment with the least amount of issues?
As I have never flashed a new ROM before I have a few questions about it:
•Can you backup your old stock ROM before you flash because I assume flashing a ROM voids the warranty
•If I flash a ROM like RENOVATE will it effect my abilty to take pictures/video and use Wi-Fi or vertain apps? As I have heard Radios and other stuff not working right or something.
•I guess I will have to root my phone before any flashing, is my software version rootable?
Sorry for so many questions I just don't want to seriously fluff up my phone, I think myself as a pretty advanced android user but ROMs and flashing is a bit scare because I dont want to end up with a brick for another 2 years.
Thanks in advance

We have 3 One Xs.
1-My Old (Dropped in water) (WWE)
2-My new (India)
3-My wife's (Korean)
Any of them doesnt have a heating problem
And battery life is better than my old phones (Desire s,sensation, gnex)
Have you updated your firmware yet?
I remember the earliest firmware 1.26 had a TERRIBLE overheating problem. Later releases pretty much fixed it.
It's not buggered mate, they are famous for geting hot when being pushed hard.
Battery life is questionable on stock. If you switch to a custom ROM, you'll generally see an improvement in battery life especially if you switch to a ROM like Cyanogenmod 10 which doesn't use sense.
You will lose Sense benefits like the excellent camera features AND if you flash a custom rom you assume warranty responsibility. Even if you flash a recovery rom, HTC will still know you've unlocked it.
All variants of the One X are rootable and there are excellent tutorials available depending on your needs.
I did it, and haven't looked back since. Cyanogenmod 10 in particular is incredible and feels so fast and fluid in comparison with stock builds.

Fixes released? - HTC has released updates, but in general we don't really know what their updates really fix
Buggered? - No
Custom ROM will fix your problems? - In my experience, yes!
Best ROM to fix your issues - Personally I'd suggest OrDroidX or ARHD ROMs (ICS).
Warranty? - Will void your warranty, but personally I think this doesn't matter that much as long as you're not a klutz
Yes your phone is rootable/flashable/whaever.
You'll probably be wondering whether to go with ICS ROMs (eg. OrDroidX) / JB ROMs (eg. CM10)
ICS:
+ better battery life (very significant - can reach 2 days with 5 hrs+ screen on time depending on kernel)
+ more stable
- performance wise it's enough, but not as fast as JB ROMs
JB:
+ extremely powerful performance
- not as stable
- battery life sucks (lasts me 16 hours - about 2 hrs screen on time)
ICS: I recommend OrdroidX
JB: I recommend SlimBean
Custom Kernels:
1. Bricked - amazing battery life, low performance
2. Faux - less battery life, great performance
3. Ncx - somewhere in the middle
All these are based on my experiences

looks like the latest to me man.
Anyway, much has been fixed as you're running the latest version atm. You can backup your current ROM before installing a custom one and flashing a custom ROM should only enhance features, not affect them negatively.
i do get heat issues when i game, thats about it.
Thank you very much for your advice guys I definitely grow some balls and install and try each of those recommended Roms. You guys awesome and thanks for all your replies
I only got "overheating" issues on stock rom (vodafone / The Netherlands), after two updates the Hox was not gettin really warm anymore.
On Renovate rom i never had any issues! It never gets to warm, and battery life is awesome. Normal use gives me more than two days of use!
So don't worrie and enjoy the Hox!

flashed UCUBMK6 now it is very sluggish

Hi, I have CWD recovery along with the following ROMs installed. I believe this one is rooted and stock AT&T.
However afte rflashing, it is quite sluggish, the screen is simply not smooth plus the response is slow. I am wondering what is out there I can do to mitigate the issue?
Also the settings has much lesser menus available and many configuratble items are simply not there:
Here is the info:
android v: 4.3
BB ver: I317UCUBMK6
kernel: 3.031-2048209 [email protected] #1
Build No. JSS15J.I317UCUBMK6
I am wondering if there is a later build available that has better performance and features or any other ROMs? What I am looking for us stability and all features are working and rooted ROM.
and I unlocked my phone and switched to T-mobile.
Thanks.,
ok

[HELP!] Camera Problems with MildWild Jelly-Gingerbread

So recently I decided to get back to some of my older android devices, and why not try out the good o'l HTC Desire.
Now at one point I thought that installing a custom ROM was a good idea to get some of the newer apps or what not... and managed to screw up the camera somehow. Now the problem is, this was done around 3/4 years ago and the phone was left as it was.
Another issue it had with this ROM is the insane battery leakage. It lasts MAX 1 hour... Starts to heat up after a couple of minutes of usage.
I've tried several different things, including:
1. Camera Restarter application that many people recommend.
2. Wipe Dalvik/Cache, Factory Reset, Wipe Data... etc
3. Force closing the app, getting rid of the data/cache within the OS application settings...
The ROM I'm using is the old MildWild GingerBread v.2.3.7 JellyBean based version of the ROM.
Kernel version: [email protected]#1
Mod version: MildWild Jelly-Gingerbread
Build date: November 2013
Recovery: CVM Revolutionary 4.0.1.4
Phone model, obviously the HTC Desire Bravo, the original.
I'd love to try and fix this rom's issue... but what I'd like more than anything is, if someone could post a mirror to this custom ROM too:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2204681
I'd like to give that a try too, as it has the HTC Sense feel to it. Miss the good ol' rainbow blur live wallpaper, square weather widget... (the closest to the original)
And if not that, someone that knows how to revert this thing back to the original stock ROM.
Already tried doing that, but couldn't flash any of the RRU zip files provided on the Android Development section.
The phone should be from the European Region, as it was bought from there. Specifically don't know the operator... so WWE.
If none other options are avalible... may someone recommend me a very good ROM that atleast looks like the old HTC Sense and has a fully working Camera, without any Battery leakage issues.
Thanks in advance.
