Hi, how can I delete a file in \Windows folder? it seems complaining that the file is in ROM, I had tried many way even using other File Explorer or via ActiveSync. None of them work.

if it's built in the rom, you might be unable to delete that file.
Please be more specific: which file do you wish to delete?
Maybe you'd have to recook the ROM without that file.

Things built into the rom are "READ ONLY MEMORY" therefore cannot be deleted. if the file is only marked as system and readonly though you can change its atributes using total commander. just long click on item to bring up menu and go to properties. there you need to uncheck everything and delete
I had downloaded Total Commander and installed it, the checked file attributes are 'read only' and 'in rom'; so I guess the file shall be consider undeleteable.
Now I had to learn how to recook, any good guide how can I recook the ROM that I have?

I downloaded some software and it came up as being faulty software. The file was a zip folder titled : res_ppc-custom.icons
I tried through my windows mobile device center to uninstall it, but it was never actually installed completely in the first place.
I then tried to delete the file a few times. Once directly from my pda, once through the device center and again through my pc windows explorer. All three attempts were unsuccessful.
How can I get rid of this thing?

perhaps you may want to check if the file being accessed by other software, easiest way is to soft reset and try to delete it.

Move files to storage card
OK I want to move some files (not ROM) in Windows and keep getting error. For example Opera.exe is not marked as anything in properties yet I can't seem to delete the file. I did copy it to my storage card without any issue but can't delete the original from Windows directory. Any suggestions since Total Commander won't delete it. Will edit registry to find it on the Storage Card.

I have the same problem - I have colpilot.wm6ppc.cab in my Windows directory. It's 12.6mb, I don't want it, and it's taking up a lot of storage space. My phone is a T-Mobile MDA and it obviously came with CoPilot as an option, but I think it's really unfair that the cab is right there in the Windows dir and I can't get rid of it....

The cab is cooked in as part of the rom; there's nothing you can do about it, except flash a custom rom (this is one of the main reasons people flash custom roms). Be glad it was installed as a cab and not as a full package-at least cabs are compressed are a single file.

I think the issue is not on the files in ROM.
I have the same problem. I've copied a file under Windows folder and after that I'm unable to delete it.
Strangely I'm able to rename it, which should mean that file is not in use, however deletion is not possible.
I've used TotalCommander, the built-in Explorer and also connected the phone via ActiveSync, but still nothing happens and access seems to be denied.
The exact message is "deletion error".
Any idea?

Use Total Commander to modify the contents of the \Windows directory.
Yes, but you won't be able to delete a ROM file anyway.
In the \Windows folder, you commonly encounter three kinds of files :
- Pure ROM files (can't be deleted nor renamed nor moved, nor even copied, but can be overwritten, consuming internal storage memory space in the process to store the new copy, that will become used instead) ;
- Files put there by installation CABs or else (can be freely deleted, renamed or moved, provided they're not currently used by a running process) ;
- Files put on top of previously existing ROM files, wearing the same name (deleting, renaming or moving them will thus make the original ROM file undertneath to reappear with its original contents and attributes).
Once you've understood that, you'll be more aware of what's cooking there.
ROM files can't even be copied, but you can use ROMExtractor to copy them elsewhere, in case you want to study them, or use them in your own ROM (useful to get up-to date versions from another HTC device to cook your own ROM).
Since ROMExtractor is a very minimalistic tool (you have to type in all the files names with their path, same for the target copy, all one by one !) manually extracting hundreds (even thousands) of files is a very tedious taks, I made a MortScript to automate the process in order to extract all those DLLs, EXEs, MUIs, etc. files that can't be directly copied from a phone's ROM.
On the other hand, you absolutely can't delete a ROM file to make room. Overwriting it with a file wearing the same name will jut result in actually adding the new file, thus consuming even more room. The new file will just be used instead of the original one (so you can still update or personalize the ROM).
As a direct consequence, the only way to get rid of unwanted ROM files or permanently replacing them with up-to-date ones is to cook a ROM and flash it to the device to replace the old one.
That's way how operating systems can become better and better, and save space at the same time.
And no, Windows Mobile isn't dead : I'm not quite finished with fixing it until it's perfect, so it's not over yet. LOL
There are many possible situations where you want to deploy some files to a certain folder on your phone. Copying music, ringtones, provxml, etc. This can be difficult if you don't have a working file-explorer for your device.
This method will let you deploy files to your developer-unlocked WP7 device, as long as it is developer-unlocked. It works on any brand and any version of Windows. It also works if you have Mango and your device is Interop-Locked. You won't be able to overwrite ROM-files!
At first I thought this method had access to all folder on the phone. Unfortunately that does not seem to be true. When I tested this, I thought I had removed all policies I added to get root-access on my device. This was not true, so when I tested this I had more access than on a regular WP7 device. It is still possible to write to the root-folder, create new folders in the root-folder, "My Documents", "Applications", etc. Unfortunately it does not seem to be possible to write to \Windows.
Follow these instructions:
1. Download this file: File Deployer by Heathcliff74 v2.xap.
2. Open your favorite archiver (WinZip / WinRar / 7Zip).
3. In the archiver open the xap file.
4. In Windows Explorer (or on your desktop) create the folder structure where you want to deploy files on your phone. So if you want to copy files to the \My Documents\My Ringtones, then first create a folder "My Documents" and in that folder create a folder "My Documents".
5. Put the files you want to deploy in the folders you created.
6. Rename the root-folders you created and add this at the start:
XX-XX-XX-XX-
It must be exactly like that! Only do this for the root-folders. So in the example I gave, the "My Documents" folder will become "XX-XX-XX-XX-My Documents". The deeper folders, like "My Ringtones" will remain as they are.
7. Drag the folders into the xap-archive.
8. Close the archiver tool.
9. Open the xap-file in a hex-editor.
10. Search and replace these hex-values (all occurrences!!):
Search: 58 58 2D 58 58 2D 58 58 2D 58 58 2D
Replace with: 2E 2E 2F 2E 2E 2F 2E 2E 2F 2E 2E 2F
11. Save and close the hex-editor.
12. Use any Windows Phone App Deployer to deploy the contents of the xap-file to your phone.

beautiful, I wonder if somebody can write this into a program. the program asks which folders, which folders are root and what files to transfer. then does the rest (creates the folder structure, renaming, packaging, hex replacing) and spits out the xap ready for deployment. I know that I will screw this up with all the xes and hex replacements

This is not working as expected. It seemed I had some policies in place, that allowed me to do more than on a 'normal' WP7 device. It does still seem to work for a lot of folders, like the root-folder, "My Documents", "Applications", etc. But it does not work for the "Windows" folder. Too bad I will update the opening post with this info.
I will also update the xap, because not all archivers did handle the xap well. That should be fixed with the new xap.

LOL! I'm surprised the deployment system accepts ../ paths, and that it ignores the ZIP CRC checks that obviously become invalid when you hex-edit that stuff. Good find!

Finding exploits is always about finding things a system accepts that it really shouldn't accept
The zip crc's are only on the file-contents, not on the folder-structures and headers.

can anyone suggest an app that can browse the folders on my phone? No need to have write access, just read. I just need to have the path of the Isolated Storage folder for the Kindle application. I want to deploy my .mobi ebooks into my phone.
No such app exists, aside from the HTC filesystem browsers (TouchXplorer, Advanced Explorer, WPDM on the PC) and WP7 Root Tools (currently Samsung gen1 only). Apps don't have the required permissions by themselves even to do read operations on the majority of the filesystem.
However, if you just need the path to an app's IsoStore, it's \Applications\Data\<ProductIdGuid>\Data\IsolatedStore. For Kindle, the GUID is 48195FB4-EE0E-E011-9264-00237DE2DB9E (as in, \Applications\Data\48195FB4-EE0E-E011-9264-00237DE2DB9E\Data\IsolatedStore\). I don't know how the app organizes its files within that folder, though.
can you confirm if the kindle isolated storage path is "\Applications\Data\<ProductIdGuid>\Data\IsolatedStore" or is it "\IsolatedStorage"?
One last thing, If I decide to uninstall the XAP, will all of the files also gets removed?
It's IsolatedStore. Also, uninstalling an app does not remove files deployed this way.

how did you become so good at finding exploits in wp7?
I'm trying to use this way to transfer game saves. But it always says something like "The group policy blocks this app."
Can someone confirm this deploy method still valid under the following circurstances?
- System version 8107
- app IsolatedStore, i.e. \Applications\Data\<guid>\Data\IsolatedStore
- app is deployed by Marketplace
You can't install homebrew (unsigned) XAP files with the same GUID as installed Marketplace apps. You also can't use IsolatedStorageExplorer or anything built on it on Marketplace apps (or their data, rather) - it will give you that "group policy" error if you try.
However, the deployer hack should work fine for adding or replacing files in a Marketplace app if the GUID used for the deployment "app" is different.

+1 for the idea... I also want a program like winrar which also available in symbian phones.plz any dev note this and develop an app for compressing and decompressing files...
WP will unzip zip files, make the sip, copy to sky drive, open via IE, it will then give you the contents of the zip,, it can't compress files to zip though. Technically there would be little point since docs auto sync to sky drive, and WP doesnt support anything else or file system access, but its doable for unlocked devices I suppose

its doable so long as you have interop unlock and WP tools installed and setup
if the Windows Phone SDK is missing Zip functionality (it may be called "DEFLATE" which is the name of the compression algorithm; ZIP is the file format) then there are surely libraries for various compression methods which you could download. Alternatively, if you don't mind using native code homebrew, there are compression libraries (zlib, etc.) that can be compiled to a native DLL, and you could then access them via COM.
i add this to new version of my file manager and now you can compress and decompress file and folders

Generally speaking, Silverlight (which WP7 uses for apps) doesn't even allow normal file access, so you might just be getting a MethodAccessException on File.Create. If not, that still won't work without elevated privileges. The default working directory for a program is it's install directory. For a WP7 app, that's going to be either its install location (\Applications\Install\<GUID>\Install) or the Windows directory where the taskhost.exe file lives (\Windows\). Trying to create a file without specifying full path will crete it relative to the working directory, which in this case means creating it in the working directory directly (no path specified). Since the app can't write to the working directory, you'll get an error from that too.
To get around the permissions error, use the IsolatedStore folder (\Applications\Data\<GUID>\Data\IsolatedStore\) or run the app with full permissions ("Trusted" or root unlocked).
Hi folks, I've never tried editing anything in WindowsApps under Windows RT 8.0 but now when I use version 8.1 I feel like playing with modern apps. From what I read in Windows 8 it was(is?) possible to fully access it by taking ownership of that folder. I did the same, changed owner from trustedinstaller to my user account and while under permissions it looks like my user has full access to all files I still can't edit anything, only read, execute and delete, no write. Is it possible to edit anything in WindowsApps under RT 8.1 or was it blocked since RT 8.0 or in both Windows RT and 8 and I just misread something?
Taking ownership allows you to edit the permissions. Editing the permissions enables adding the Write (or Full Control) permissions.

Did you enable it for subfolders, etc.? Can you create a new folder directly under WindowsApps? Have you applied the permissions change yet?

Yep, I've enabled it for subfolders, gave full access to all users, unticked read only flags, changed owner... i've tried everything I could. And yes, I can create a new folder directly in windowsapps but not in applications subfolders where I can't perform any modifications except deleting.
I'm not currently using RT 8.1, but something is off, here. You're sure you have privileges on the subfolders (individual app folders), not just the WindowsApps folder? Each one has their own permissions.

Yes, I'm 100% sure that I have full control set for all subfolders. Strange thing is that I tried some random files in random app folders and some files are writeable and some are not, even in one folder. I think that MS did it on purpose to prevent users from modifying/cracking apps. All I wanted to do was to edit one xml file in Asphalt 7 folder to enable some graphical enhancements that are disabled for Windows RT and are stored in this xml as presets but no matter what I do I can't edit this file and believe me, I tried everything.
There are things I'm sure you could do - for example, opening a file or folder with FILE_FLAG_BACKUP_SEMANTICS lets you completely bypass ACLs, assuming you have the SE_BACKUP permissions (Administrators and other members of the "Backup Operators" security group).
One other possibility, that in fact sounds quite likely from your description: are you sure that the apps aren't *running* in the background? 8.1 makes apps suspend, not close, by default even if you do the swipe-to-bottom-of-screen gesture. Obviously, if the files are locked, you won't be able to edit them. That should give you a different error, but you never actually said what error you're getting.

I know that apps are tombstoned in 8.1 so you can fast resume like in WP and to fully close you need to swipe to bottom and hold unless tile flips but that's not the case as I tried that on fully closed apps. And the error is just typical "you need permission to perform this action". It looks like things are locked and impossible to access without some special trickery. So that's why in modern apps many crucial files like licenses or in-app purchase settings are stored in human readable files like xml, if there is no way to edit it, why encrypt? Either article that stated that you can gain full access to windowsapps wasn't exactly accurate or something has changed in 8.1, I don't have 8.0 so can't check.
I'm running into this issue as well in 8.1, and I had no issues in 8.0.
Anyone made progress? I have tried right after a reboot, without opening any apps (this is a store app), so the app shouldn't be running or in use.

P.S. C:\Program Files>icacls windowsapps /t /c /q /reset seems to fix issues if your metro apps stop starting ?

I'm running into the exact same problem, in Windows 8 I could write and edit files in the Windowsapps folder without any hassle (obviously with the correct permissions set), in Windows 8.1 this is not possible. Guess Microsoft toughened up the protection in this particular folder after the WSService Tokens Extractor was being used for turning trial apps into full versions
The apps are protected but if you make an new folder and move the files and rename you have full control hover for the apps to run need the unknown account which execute the program

You might wanna extract separate partition images from the ffu then edit the MainOS image but you can't repack them into a new ffu. You can only repack those images into a flashable zip file. If you're not in hurry, I can write a full tutorial next week if you need one. Otherwise, you can experiment yourself with Interop Tools, OSFMount and Total Commander. Just be very, very careful cause you might turn your device into a brick

Ya Interop tools and sftp or Full MTP access is what I use.
Go to C:\PROGRAMS\COMMONFILES\XAPS
Remove what you do not want. But be careful not to remove stuff you may need later, like wallet or other foundation apps. Also if you Hard reset they will be gone next time around. Secondly I have found some OEMs use another folder I think under C:\PROGRAMS\COMMONFILES\OEM\PreinstalledAPPS or something C:\PROGRAMS\COMMONFILES\OEM\Preinstalled......
The main folder is the XAPS folder though, that gets used during OOBE provisioning.
