Best thing to do is to download the RUU and let it run, it will bring you back to stock. If the RUU cannot find your device then the option is to run the RUU but do not click next, locate the tmep folder on your computer where the installer is running and find a file named rom.zip... this file can be renamed as PCIMG36.zip and place it on the SD card root and then try to get to the bootloader again, it should take you back to stock.

What can you do?
1. Post in the CORRECT section.
2. Yay we got number 1 out of the way, but you should probably run an RUU because you probably are using a root method you shouldn't be using. DjREZ videos are for a quite outdated root method if I recall.
3. If you can't get the RUU to fun you need to go to Bootloader and then run the RUU while your phone is in FASTBOOT.
4. Once you are successfully back to stock let us know what HBOOT you have and what hardware version your Evo is. I believe they both can be found in bootloader.

Okay where can I downlaod this RUU, and do I just download it and let it run or what? And do I boot into bootloader and then let it run or what?

Read the post that I edited, but to know which RUU you need to check which hboot you are and stuff.

search next time and you would have found your answer. and questions DO NOT belong in the development section. that could have been avoided by reading the stickies. which btw, would have lead you right to the thread to unroot. my advice, dont post in this thread again to let it die else you will get flamed back to the stone age.

Looks like ur stuck with the new locked Hboot. Hold off until an exploit is found or unrEVOked is updated.
hahah which is what version ???
go to recovery and tell us what hboot you have? If you have the new one
you kind off doomed (for now)
i have hboot 2.10.001

[Q] hboot says I have S-on but Revolutionary says I have S-off

So I was trying to unroot my phone to take it back to Sprint. I flashed PCimg to put S-on and was going RUU back to stock ROM. However, for some reason the RUU says it cant find my device. So I decided to just go back and switch back to S-off. But when I try to run Revolutionary it says that I am already S-off. But the bootloader says I have S-on. Halp!
download unrevoked forever son patch and put on sd card. Go into your recovery and flash it. Go back to hboot and see if its on. Lemme know if that works thanks.. if you need the file i can upload it for ya.

Ok well I attempted to do that....but I cant flash unrevoked forever because I have the latest radio version and they are not compatible. So the flash aborts midway through. And unfortunately I cannot downgrade my radio, at least not that I've seen. So now what?
What hboot version do you have?
If it is 6.17 because that's how you s-on'ed revolutionary, you need to run an RUU to get you back to 2.16 so you can reroot. If the computer won't find your device, try running it with the phone in fastboot.

I ended up flashing a PC36IMG that wiped everything and set my OTA, hboot, recovery, splash, boot animation, and got the S-on worked out. One file.....one flash....one happy Evo owner.
Thanks for the suggestions.

Well the first thing you have to do in the unrooting procedure is downgrade the misc partition so you don't get that message . It's all outlined there nicely, and if you have any questions, it might be easier for you to post over there - they're all very helpful .

Thanks again for the help. Everything went good with achieving the "locked oow" but the only problem im presenting is being able to flash the pc36img file due to the fact that i have to press up in order to update. My volume up button is broken (second time with in a month) which is why im taking my phone into sprint. Im downloading and RUU from rootzwiki to see if im able to flash back to the stock unrooted rom from there or by recovery. Thanks again.

If you do an "adb reboot bootloader", and then run the RUU from your PC, you shouldn't have to press any buttons on the device.

Thats where my problem was, the "RUU" I downloaded from the first thread you mentioned was in .zip format not .exe but all is good now, fully unrooted and back to original crappy malfunctioning 2.3.5  thanks again for your help and puttin up with my noobness

hey guys i had to unroot my evo with the unrooting method mentioned above, but i messed up and flashed the s-on and flashed an RUU b4 downgrading the misc partition. The phone also installed the 5.07 OTA with the stock recovery. The phone says it has "s-on" but the hboot is 6.17 and i cannot get it to update back to 2.18, everytime i try to RUU again, i get a error 140 saying bootloader version error. I tried to root again using revolutionary and i get told that the s is already off and get asked to install a custom recovery and that fails every time. i tried to install amon ra via pc36img method in bootloader and it does nothing. i tried using unrevoked since my phone says its hboot 2.16 and unrevoked fails and says my firmware is too new. I tried using htc dev to achieve root again and the cmd gives me an error every time i try to get the code from my phone. i made a booboo and i cant root nor update and i gotta return my phone to sprint since i upgraded my phone to a diff phone. Any ideas guys?

WHAT?? I'm lost. First you said your Hboot is 6.17, then you said your phone says it has Hboot 2.16.
Sounds like your misc partition is screwed up from the different Hboots that your phone had, especially from the 5.07 OTA. If that's the case, there is no current RUU that will work for that (the 5.07 misc). It's there to prevent you from downgrading. You will need the Tacoroot method in order to downgrade your misc partition so that you can run your RUU again. It will give you a temp root so that you can run adb commands to downgrade that misc partition. It's in the rooting method guide from Captain Throwback's link above.

My apologies, i was in a rush earlier. My hboot is 6.17, not 2.16. I tried unrooting and did for the most part except getting hboot back to 2.18. In this process, the phone forced itself to update to the new 5.07 OTA that there is no RUU for so im screwed to that end. I am currently trying Tacoroot method but am having issues being stuck at the sprint screen bootloop so i cant run the flash_image command from the sdcard (since the phone isnt starting fully for it to be in "charge only mode"). Seems alot of ppl have that same issue but havent found a solution yet. Not sure if i just start over if it bootloops or not. I've tried 3 complete times now and still get stuck on the bootloop.
Ouch, that sucks. If you cannot boot into the operating system, then there might not be anything that you can do.

i can boot into the phone, its just when doing the tacoroot method, i cannot get past the step where the phone goes into the loop and you have to enter 3 commands.

The looping doesn't matter - you should still have adb access, unless you didn't follow the instructions exactly.

i just stumbled over this method.. unrevoked web site has a s-on tool, go to there site ://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/forever you will see the blah blah blah tutorial.. scroll down until you get down to:
How can this be removed or undone if I need to take my phone in for service?
Download the latest ''S-ON'' tool to a temporary location and follow the installation instructions above to run it. Once your phone is S-ON, you may lose root permanently if you install an official update.. download it to your phone.. recovery mode.. flash from zip.. poof.. S-ON
now head over to htcevohacks, ://htcevohacks.com/htc-evo-hacks/how-to-unroot-your-htc-evo-4g/ get htc update rom utility for your phone.. that erases entire phone and and places sprints latest stock factory rom and everything back on your phone.. do all sprint updates.. and return to sprint and recieve your refurbished motorola photon.. sprint htc evo 4g has been dissed-continued.. oh yeah if you dont do it in that order.. you will loose your root with update utility.. which means you will have to use unrevoked3 to reroot and flash s-on tool .. done the right way its only two steps.. peace out

unrevoked can't touch 4.08.605.15

Skip the ruu part on the htcdev site as you probably already have an unlockable bootloader.

You need to go to the htcdev site and follow all the steps skipping the ruu (hboot update). After you skip the ruu part it will have you use fastboot to get a code from the phone and paste it to the site and submit. Htcdev will then send you and unlock_token.bin file you fastboot flash to unlock the bootloader. Then you can fastboot flash recovery.
Has the phone previously been unlocked? If so do you still have the unlock_token.bin file?

Cannot bring Evo4G back to stock rom

Hi Guys, I have spent the last 2 days searching this forum and trying to understand what I need to do to bring my phone back to stock but can't seem to figure it out and thought I did post a new thread. Here is what I have,
HTC Evo4G
Android version 4.0.4
Baseband version 2.15.00.12.19
Kernal version 2.6.38.8-evervolv-acies-ics+
Build number MIUI-2.8.3.0 MIUI
If I go into recovery mode (the one that u get when u hold down power and volume down button), here is what I see,
*** RELOCKED ***
SUPERSONIC EVT2 SHIP S-ON
HBOOT 2.18.0001
I have tried to run RUU and each time it comes up with "Error 140: Bootloader version error"
Does anyone know how I can return my phone to stock please.
Which RUU are you trying to run? The RUU's Hboot has to be the same as what you already have, meaning it has to be Hboot 2.18.

How do I downgrade my hboot to 2.10?
Download the RUU from this link and run it through your bootloader. I believe you will need to rename it PC36IMG.zip for it to work. Make sure you don't have an extra .zip extension on the end.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1484240
To downgrade your Hboot, you can use Captain Throwback's method for rooting Hboot 2.18. It involves using ADB to upgrade your misc. partition, which would then allow you to downgrade by running an older RUU.
Again, which RUU did you try to use originally?
Generally, since you are relocked s-on you can find a signed ruu file in which you can just flash from your relocked bootloader screen or you can run an ruu exe file from your computer. I do not know if there is a method for downgrading your hboot while on s-on but flashing a signed ruu or running an ruu exe will bring your bootloader down. If that don't work, then i would listen to this guy above my post lol and see if that method works.

I had the same problem also. It took me hours to figure this out. Before you can down grade to an earlier Hboot, you have to make sure the bootloader is unlocked from htc.devs, make sure that recovery is installed, and the phone has "su" rights superuser rights. It is critical that the phone have superuser installed and you have su rights before before you install these 2 files to your sd card. The first file is flash_image then the next one is mtd-eng. http://themikmik.com/attachment.php?...1&d=1327588554 http://themikmik.com/attachment.php?...1&d=1327588554
Unzip these files and copy it to your sd card. Then make sure your phone is in usb debugging mode, then go into command prompt on your pc, then type adb shell. then you should see a $ dollar sign. Type su and and you should see a # pound sign. Then enter these commands below one step a time.
cat /sdcard/flash_image > /data/flash_image
chmod 755 /data/flash_image
/data/flash_image misc /sdcard/mtd-eng.img
Then you can install your PC36IMG to your sd card then install the it into bootloader or run the RUU from your pc following the instructions on the program. Make sure your phone is charged up. I prefer a full charge so there won't be issues. If you still have concerns, Re post back and let me know where you are stuck. I followed this guide when I had my supersonic: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1473373

Download the RUU from this link and run it through your bootloader. I believe you will need to rename it PC36IMG.zip for it to work. Make sure you don't have an extra .zip extension on the end.

Thanks Guys. I downloaded the RUU and tried to run it from my PC. I went through screens and eventually came up with the error Error [140]: Bootloader version error.
Here are the versions I am on,
From:

4.24.651.1
To:

Boot into fastboot, and from the path where you have fastboot.exe on your computer, run the command:
Code:
fastboot getvar mainver
and then report back what it says. If your main version is 5.07.651.1, then that RUU won't work, and you'll have to unlock again and downgrade your misc partition to flash back to stock. You should really flash a stock ROM while you're unlocked too. Having an ICS ROM on there and relocking and likely what's causing your issues.

Here is the message I get,
C:\android>fastboot getvar mainver
< waiting for device >
So, what has happened since my last post is that I tried the directions that were given out by chickipaul, however, in trying that I was getting a segmentation error when trying to run '/data/flash_image misc /sdcard/mtd-eng.img' and I read some posts on here that folks having a segmentation error under icecream sandwich should try running the command on gingerbread. Because of that, I tried to put a gingerbread ROM and selected synergy. Now that I have done that, once the phone boots up, it gets to the lock screen Ok. When I try to unlock it, I keep getting messages that some process has died, I click Ok and another message pops up abt another process crashing, and so forth and so forth.
I am hoping that I just need to either install synergy rom again and hope it works Ok or somehow get another gingerbread ROM in there. From there, I could return to stock by installing the RUU. Right now if I run the RUU, the phone never boots into recovery (I think RUU never gets to connect to the phone because of all the processes crashing).
What do u think?

Hi Design Flaw. I just read your current post about what you tried. It sounds like something got corrupted in system files of the phone, that's why your phone is crashing. Question can you get to your bootloader screen by removing the battery for a few seconds, reinstalling the battery then hold volume down and the power button at the same time. If you can get into the bootloader screen where it says on the top of your screen has the Hboot version 2.18 and the S-On. I recommend to unlock the bootloader with your unlock_token file from htc dev first. I will borrow my wife's evo 4g and let her have my evo 3d and try to duplicate the same concern on her phone to help you figure out your phone. Post back here when you have time to work on your phone. I will help you out.

Do you have the HTC Drivers installed? Does your Bootloader say "FASTBOOT USB"? It sounds like either you don't have the drivers installed or you didn't select fastboot from the HBOOT list.
Once it says FASTBOOT USB, then run that command again and post the output.
Unfortunately, you can't downgrade the misc partition while you're on an ICS ROM - that's why you're getting the segmentation fault error.
Flash a stock Gingerbread ROM. Synergy isn't really a good choice.

Hey there ... I did not know that I had to run that when I was in bootloader and fastboot usb was being displayed. I was trying to run it when my phone was connected to the PC. I just booted into bootloader and while fastboot usb was up there on the screen, I ran the command and here is what I see,
C:\android>fastboot getvar mainver
mainver: 1.17.651.1
finished. total time: 0.003s
Synergy ROM did not work for me so I had to go back to MIUI.us. Now that I have a working phone and I can copy over files to the phone, I am going to flash urayamashii ROM and see if I can run ruu after that.
Thank you so much for your help!

If that's your mainver, you should be able to run any RUU or signed PC36IMG.zip.
First though, you need to flash a stock Gingerbread ROM. Every ROM you talk about flashing is not a stock ROM. That's the first thing you need to do. Then you can relock, and I'd run the 4.54 PC36IMG.zip through HBOOT to restore back to stock (you can get it from the "Restore stock" link in my sig).

When you say run 4.54 PC36IMG.zip through HBOOT, what do you mean? If I goto the link that is in your sig and downloaded, that is a RUU and the fullname is PC36IMG_SuperSonic_GB_Sprint_WWE_4.54.651.1_Radio_2.15.00.0808_NV_2.15_release_220182_signed.zip. Can I just rename it PC136IMG.zip and put in the root folder of sdcard and then from bootloader install it?

Yes, that's the link, and the procedure to flash it - but you will have to be relocked first for it to work.
And an RUU is not the same as a PC36IMG file, which is why I made the distinction. One is run from a PC, the other is installed directly from the device.

Thanks again! So, dumb qs here but why RUU won't work when installing from PC (gives incorrect version error) but when installing directly from device, it is Okay?

I have no idea. It should really work either way. Not sure why it doesn't. Though . . . It could be because the device can't reboot into RUU mode because you're not running it from a stock Gingerbread ROM (like I keep saying you need to flash).
