Hi all,
First a little background into what I'm attempting...
On my PC, I have a self created program which swaps the desktop image to one selected at random from a predetermined directory. There's lots of nifty features, such as image resizing to fit desktop, support for different images on different monitors in a multi monitor setup. etc.
But enough about that, as it's not really windows mobile related. What is related is the fact i'm trying to implement something similar on my Xperia X1.
Obviously I want it so I can have different images for the today screen when it's in landscape and portrait mode - like the built in themes do. I have to admit i'm fairly miffed that this feature isn't supported nativly in a nice easy non-theme related way. it's nigh-on impossible to find an image that looks good in both aspects.
Anyway, I did have something working. A small program which creates a stwater_480_800.bmp and stwater_800_480.bmp by selecting a random image from one of two predetermined directories, and then plonking said images in the windows directory. (Replacing the two bmp images put there by the theme i was using) No resizing of images or anything fancy, just a straight file copy.
This line of code:
SendMessage(HWND_BROADCAST, WM_WININICHANGE, 242, 0)
forces the today screen to update to the lovely new images after the files have been replaced.
All was well until I installed gtrab's excellent pure windows mobile 6.5 update (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=588882). And although the app still works for the main part, i.e. it picks an image, and changes the background for the today screen, i have encountered a bug.
The image behind the updated start menu doesn't get refreshed - it stays as whatever the image was when the phone was last reset (Think it's specifically a hard reset? i.e. holding power button down the rebooting with sony ericsson logo etc).
Here's the code i'm currently using (Apologies for lack of comments, despite being employed as a vb.net programmer, i'm self taught and not commenting is a bad habit i've never gotten out of.)
Code:
Public Shared Sub SwitchBG()
Randomize()
Dim curdir As New IO.DirectoryInfo(SharedVars.LandscapeDir)
Dim imagefiles As IO.FileInfo() = curdir.GetFiles("*.bmp")
If imagefiles.Length > 0 Then
IO.File.Delete("Windows\stwater_800_480.bmp")
IO.File.Copy(imagefiles(Math.Floor(Rnd() * imagefiles.Length)).FullName, "Windows\stwater_800_480.bmp")
Else
MessageBox.Show("No Landscape Images!", "BGSwitcherPPC", MessageBoxButtons.OK, MessageBoxIcon.Exclamation, MessageBoxDefaultButton.Button1)
End If
curdir = New IO.DirectoryInfo(SharedVars.PortraitDir)
imagefiles = curdir.GetFiles("*.bmp")
If imagefiles.Length > 0 Then
IO.File.Delete("Windows\stwater_480_800.bmp")
IO.File.Copy(imagefiles(Math.Floor(Rnd() * imagefiles.Length)).FullName, "Windows\stwater_480_800.bmp")
Else
MessageBox.Show("No Portrait Images!", "BGSwitcherPPC", MessageBoxButtons.OK, MessageBoxIcon.Exclamation, MessageBoxDefaultButton.Button1)
End If
SendMessage(HWND_BROADCAST, WM_WININICHANGE, 242, 0)
End Sub
I'd love to know what I have to do to force the start menu image to refresh. I've googled for a while with no joys.
Incidentally, I did discover that i can use .jpgs for the background (makes sense really). Not sure if that will have any bearing, but i'll be changing the code to accept both bmp, jpgs, and probably gifs. Can't see that it will affect my specific problem, but thought it would be worth mentioning.
Once i've got this sorted, i'll be ready to tackle the next stage, which is implementing some form of schedule so i can wake up to a new today screen image every day.
Thanks in advance to anyone with any pointers.
Matt.
Sorry, just realised I should have posted this in the windows specific forum.
Still, any help much appreciated!
Okay, I've managed to do this. Via a hacky work-around.
Basically, I realised after a bit of playing, that if you set a "normal" wallpaper, all it does is create a registry key. But, rather handily, the start menu and lock screens (lock was also affected by this bug) would see this change, and update their pic.
Also, rather handily, if you set the registry to an image that doesn't exist, the image then defaults back to the appropriate stwater
so the workaround is as follows...
Every time i run the switch code, I write an incrementing value to the HKCU\software\windows\today\wall registy value. This can be anything, providing it's not a "real image"
when you next open the start menu, it looks for this "new" image, can't find it, so loads the appropriate stwater image.
I'm gona stick the program in an Xperia forum for some feedback/suggestions.

Hi,
Welcome new and longtime Mortscript coders. This app will bridge the gap between you and coding Mortscript on your phone.

Here are a few limitations we experience as we Mort code more and more.
Getting at It:
So you've set up a a script, Do-Me-Now.mscr, and copied it into a sub folder on your phone. Maybe you even copied it into a sub sub folder because you have so many scripts, like me.
How fast can you browse to that script? Well let's see, Start, Explore, Storage Card, Morts, Testing. There it is! Great! I am here, now I run Do-Me-Now.mscr. And of course, like all new and great scripts, it doesn't run. That only took us clicking four clicks to get there and run it. My thumbs already tired and I have a blister.
Exploring Anew:
Now run another script you have in a different sub-folder. Click up, Click into new sub folder. Keep in mind not all phones File Browse quickly. My phone is more small perhaps than your screen, as well as slower. Small is a pain to see while browsing folders. I feel it every time I click the D-Pad I am committing to waiting. You may have tabbed exploring, but I don't. Then if I want to get back to my old script, browsing back. It isn't simple.
Edit Me Not:
I see my file in the little File Browser window, I can run it, but now I need to edit it. Right Click? Do any mobile phones have a right click button? If mine does I have never seen. My soft menu buttons say "Find" and "Menu". Where is the "Edit File"? Dead end. But wait, I know, we can rename Do-Me-Now.mscr to Do-Me-Now.TXT, and now we can edit it with the default editor. Then save it and rename it to Do-Me-Now.mscr. Well at least we can.
Tomorrow is a Whole New Day:
I've reset my phone. Or the phone auto closed my File Browser. Now I start finger browsing from scratch. No favorite folder list, no default last explored folder is selected. Every time I run File Browser I have to start from scratch.
But Wait, I have More:
It seems I have to run a couple mortscripts in a session of coding. My test app, a windowrecording utility, another app or two. I want to click one app from my start menu, and be in my environment.
More, not Less:
Now I am in my environment, editing is now possible. But I can do more with the clicks I saved, what else? Handy access to your photo browser, registry editor, and screenshot taker (Moves your screenshots as well).
Less, not More:
But wait a sec, can't we just open the text file editor on the phone and start there? Maybe. In the first place, wow, I try and use the best editors on the market on my phone, but they all seem to have very annoying limitations. Some editors can't remember which files we were just editing, no recent list. Some editors have such a terrible document loading interface I was unable to browse for my document at all. This goes for Osymo Textpad as well as Orneta's Notepad. Not to mention, half the apps I tried don't have a close/exit option.
But irregardless, this is not just a launcher of convenience. It is also a launcher of utility.
The Mortifier will be bridging the limitations of working in a tiny mobile environment.

Features:
Quick access to prior scripts:
Keeps a library of your prior script edits. Script Modes: Spy run, Select script, Directory search.
Internal Registry Browser & Paster:
Browse the registry, choose the Key you want, and it will be pasted into your Mort code. Edit values. Search could be added to a future version.
Watched Folder Sync:
Bluetooth Sync - Select a destination directory and then you can transfer intended files over through bluetooth transfer. It will move those new files into the destination folder, as well as extract zip files as a directory in the target folder. Storage card sync will be next (As soon as i can connect). Maybe it will keep track of prior target directory in a later version?
Windows install folder cab copier
Window/App Recorder:
Records window titles and application processes, very useful for knowing process names and window titles!
Support for VJTrayLaunch. If you have it installed to the phones main memory, when you run The Mortifier it will put a quick launch to the tray. After you exit The Mortifier you can just click the Tray launcher and it will re-open The Mortifier.
Future Additions(?):
Mortscript Language Code Dictionary:
Browse to the Mortscript command you want to insert into your code and select it. Internal support for Orneta Notepad, but any text editor will work.
Personal IIS web updating. Who needs to wires or BT to update our scripts/cabs/docs/jpgs etc.

HK is a bit vague,
so i plan to explain the power of what hes doing.
This SOB will allow you to run mscr, because it scanned it.
But the power IMO is the ability to edit your mscr files on the fly right on your handheld!!

couldnt u do this with a regular text editor?
Glad u ask.
This does not replace the functions of a text editor on your mobile phone.
It is a front-end tool. I will list some of the limitations of coding on a mobile phone.
howdykeith ,
I like the idea. When are you planing on getting this out?
Primary release quite soon.
For a couple of the bigger things, like the code dictionary, will follow in the next couple days. Lot of text I will need to reformat, I will.
I've paused working on my other apps so I can get this done and start using it myself.

Right you could, but whats the process of doing that?
Either open the file, and then select all files, then open the mscr file...
or rename the mscr to a txt file, then open edit resave.
i have a demo version of this now for ppc.
and talk about slick.
heres some screen shots of it
All i do is run the app, select the mscr file, it auto opens it, you edit it press save, and your done.
Hi y'all.
So things are progressing real nice.
I was kind of concerned I was going to have to deal with passing a lot of arrays but it's goin real smooth like.
If anybody wants to try it, give a holler.
Awesome can't wait, thanks for making this.
So an update .
I have finished almost all of the Registry browser. Once I finish the Registry browser path library, I will get back to the mortifier and making the script library for the list of scripts and then i will put out a release.
Screenshots:
Hi
nother update.
I look up at the edit subkey pic and i want it to auto fill the text field. i expect to be able to do that no prob.
Closing in on the finish of the registry browser.
why don't you use c++ or some other program language to develop such a tool?i think that will run more efficiently than a tool developed with a script language.the script language has its own advantage and disadvantage..for exp it's easy to write, run, read ,and modify, but can't afford to operate with numerous data(no database support) ,etc.if i had studied some program language like c c++ c# ,i will develop such a tool with that...however i really appreciate what you do

As u know, there are a number of programming environments to program in for mobile phones.
.net is a beast. The learning curve is high, and even though i have taken courses in c++, coding on the mobile phone is not high on the course instruction list apparently.
Mortscript is quite similar to c++. For certain purposes, Mortscript is just as valid as any other environment. Sure Mortscript needs to be included or installed, but keep in mind installing .net on a mobile phone takes about 6 megs.
You are correct about the lack of database access, but that would be way overkill for most Mortscript apps, as well as any other app that doesn't need database access.
How much better would any of the apps i have constructed work if they were coded in c++/c#?
That being said, I am continuing to take .net courses, and I would not be surprised if i dont have time to plug away at Mortscript any more once i am full time .net. Who knows?
That all being said, I am just tidying up The Mortifier, and it will definitely be released today or tomorrow...
Hi,
So here is a first release of The Mortifier.
Much works. Some of the more esoteric functions are not working yet, like "kill all Mortscripts".
ToDo:
Registry Find
Auto Detect Text available text editors
WindowRecorder w/screenshots
Folderwatcher
Load recent scripts
Language code dictionary
Add more scripts
Re-set text editor
& Fix what's broke
Any other features that r missing, please alert me!
Because of the re-set text editor and the additional script setter needs to be included, I will be updating the script very shortly...
So we can make menus with kvvQuickmenu. not so sure submenus would work so well. would have to either keep swapping the ini file and restart the menu, which we probly could do, or have the quickmenu exe and ini file in each separate subfolder for each menu... If we did that we could probly also just do it with 2 subfolders. Keeping the first ini intact would be a good idear.
The Mortifier v0.8
Update for The Mortifier:
Command-Line Tester: Browse to the exe and enter your command line parameters. Keeps the old exe and parameters in memory so you can re-test them easily.
Task Manager is a functional menu. If you have a different Taskmanager or one that is built in, let me know and i will have it auto set for that one.
Version 0.9 - Bluetooth Folder Sync
Hi.
Here is version 0.9
There's a couple fixes here and there. WindowAppRecorder has some added info messages. The Mortifier shouldn't leave any temp files any more.
The most major update is to the Utils section. This version adds a Bluetooth folder synchronizer. So if you run the BT Synch option, you will pick the target folder. Then you can bluetooth files over to your phone that you want in the target folder. It will move all the new files that you just bluetoothed over. If you send a zip file, it will ask you if you want to extract the zip as a folder in the target directory. It will timeout after 3 seconds, so if you just wanted to move the zip instead you would click "Move as Archive" instead.
It seems too often I can't send files over cept through bt. usually i can reboot my computer and it is fixed, but often i dont want to reboot. This utility is to bridge the functionality gap for bt transfers.
Not sure why the Auto save/Hider for BT files isnt working, but thats just xtra. Maybe a future update will ask if you want to browse the destination folder when you are done.
Hi howdykeith,
can't wait to get it in my fingers (phone) to hack it. I have to travel sometimes very long. So as the next week. I have to travel from Amsterdam to Moscow and then 13 hours with the train. And that for three days work, that can't be done on remote, aaahhhhhhh.
How uncool is that? But then i have a lot of software on my laptop. A copy of my ROM and no extra accus for my phone, but i have the USB cabel to charge my phone . Then i have the time to check your little app, also the script for ms voice command. And i hope i have a minimal signal of 3G on my phone, then i can be online. And that me, without internet, only wodka, aahhhhh
Hi thanks.
So I did update the app so it wouldn't copy over the stub apps that get deleted when the bluetooth sync is initiated.
also, i did get the Auto hide and save on BT transfer working good. The auto hide will be available on the next release of the StatusTicker app as well...
Also the bluetooth auto transfer hints to the current number 1 script directory. That works real well.
Added the function for auto cab install through BT transfer. I may add "Auto detect BT dir" for wm6. I probly will remember to add Storage Card sync to do the same as BT sync.
Added is support for VJTray Launcher.
I likely may add a VJTray Launcher Library Util.
VJTrayLaunch is only for launching a small number of apps. Don't use it for 15 etc (due to the 32 task limit on WM)

Maybe not this next release? But soon.
I am adding registry search to the registry browser, so as soon as that is done I will post it here.
Below is a screenshot of vjTray:
Hi all!
This is the PocketPC Version (Viewer) of PVD the very best program to organize your movies.
You can download the PC version from http://www.videodb.info/forum_en/.
My thoughts were: what is the best movie managing and cataloging software worth while in the movie store and searching for a title... or sitting in front of the TV and trying to remember what cool movie I could watch...
That, and enjoying to write software for my mobile phone, were the reasons for mobilePVD.
The software is published at PVD's home and at xda-developers place.
How it works
First of all, you have to get PVD and enter your movies. After that, make a XML export. This writes a file containing the movie information and a directory containing the pictures. Take both and copy them onto your device. I recommend to copy them onto the SD card in a sub directory PVD.
Download mobilePVD and install it on your device. When starting, you will have to select the XML file by clicking Menu->Open DB. Your can select other languages and other skins (if someone makes them ).
When going to a sublist in mobilePVD (i.e. viewing the movie details or selecting directories) and you want to get back, just slide with your finger over the list from left to right...
How to translate
In the program directory on the device is a sub directory called "Languages". Within you find the language files. I deployed English and German so far. To make own translations just copy a file to your desktop, open it with any text editor and translate. Please publish your translation on either forum, so I can build the next version with more supported languages.
How to skin
also in the program directory you will find a sub directory "Skin" with all the images I use. The images in "Manila WVGA" are for a resolution of 800x480. If you like you can take those bitmaps and change them to fit other resolutions and other colors. Don't forget to adapt the settings in the skin.ini file.
And please share your work with us and publish your skins on either forum. I will put them in the download section.
Have fun!
Obelix
Changelog:
2.1 Filtering is back and actors are grouped by first letter.
2.0 uses virtual mode to load more movies before reaching end of memory
1.1 out of memory problem fixed
1.0 Initial release
If you like my work, you can buy me a glass of wine
Version 2.1 of mobilePVD
I was hoping this allows you to enter movie info directly on mobilePVD. A desktop entry method is rather inconvenient. Would that be possible?
Does this also mean I have to re-export everytime I add movies? I took a look at the desktop version and it is very good. I can see why it is more practical using the desktop for entry of movie info.
Obelix_A, I have exported some movies and I must say it looks really nice on my HD2 although it is still not very stable, sometime I get an error that quits the program. It's only 3 movies so I am wondering if it may sow down when I have much more (2,800 in my collection). I would love to have Ratings and duration. It is missing after export. Thanks, this is great for movie lovers just like IMDB Mobile. I am just surprised that there is not much feedback yet.
I like it to a while to sort all my movies and still didnt get all the pictures from IMDB, hey ho did it manually, i need to change the skins to VGA how do i go about that im a bit of a noobie when it comes to skins?
The Actor list is huge and is close to impossible to scroll all the way down to "T" etc. Can we have a sort of filter to search actor names? trev666, use IMP plugin for movie posters. It's excellent.
@Kensong cheers mate
it works well after i restarted my phone, without changing anything from wvga to vga so im happy, thanks man not looking forward to adding all my movies though lol
Ok so i now have a HD2.... works great
great app, thanks for sharing it
here we go with Version 2.0 of mobilePVD. It now uses a virtual mode of the SliderList, what means, that it can load more movies before running out of memory.
If it runs on your devices as stable as it does on mine, we can start adding new features...
Really nice work mate
Really nice work
If you don't mind, i have share it HERE.
Please feel free to drop me a comment if you have anything else to add or in case i have missed anything. Cheers~
just released version 2.1
Filtering is back now and actors are grouped by first letter
I have installed v2.1 right now.
If I click on one of the "-" e.g. "- Actors" I get an exception:
"RemoveItem in virtual mode not allowed"
I am very interested in the development of mobilePVD since I would love to have my movie list on my phone (TD2).
Is mobilePVD a "one man show" or are you planing to involve more developers?
I will check this and fix it...
Yes mPVD is a one-man-show. you can ask my friend amirdt (here on XDA) if he wants to join the project...
Actually I wanted to ask if I could help you with mPVD
what exactly do you want to add?
the only thing I could imagine right now, is another way to read the data.
play around with PVD and the exported data (XML) and how fast you can read it.
currently I am reading with XmlReader.Read and evaluate the nodes. If you can read faster, this would help. other proposals welcome
Here is just a spontaneous list:
- WM 6.5.5 Problem with menus. The black background (when menues are displayed) does not cover the whole screen. Above there is some space visible. This is because the top bar (where the clock is) is smaller and the windows task bar is bigger in WM 6.5.5 (Sorry, cant supply a picture now how it looks like)
- Filter Actors: Add a search field also
- Add a clear button to the search fields to clear the field easily
- Add (Readd?) a ">" to the Movie list to open the movie details (I think the ">" was already there in an earlier version.
- Maybe make the UI somehow less sensitive. At least on my device it moves very quickly. E.g. I cant open the details view without moving the movie list view up or down accidentally.
- Add "Reset all Filters" menu item to the Filter Menu.
- Remove the search field in the detailed movie view to get more space to view the details.
- Maybe make the "letter lines" (+A, +B, ..) in the actors view a little bit thicker so that it is easier to open/close them with a larger thumb
- Maybe add the "letter lines" (+A, +B, ..) to the movie list also. Dont know, how large collections will be handled right now.
- Add more filters like rating (stars...)
- Add movie trailer support (e.g. prepare trailers on PC (conversion etc.) and copy them to device. Link from within mPVD to start media player on device)
- ...
So where can I get the source code to get started with it?
Regards
Al
ok, ok
I will prepare the sources and make it available for you via SVN, so we can handle developing both.
By now, the list won't move when clicking. I changed that... (but all other things from your list can/need to be done)
so, drop me a PM with your wished user name and password for SVN and give me little time to prepare...
alfish2000 now officially joined the development of mobilePVD. So let's welcome him
thanks for your support!

Hi,
I did up a home replacement for my Nook simple touch, thought I would share it. This is an initial release, no doubt there are bugs, incompatibilities, etc, you were warned. There are no checks for other devices at this point, NST only.
Thanks to the nook community for the noogie.img file, touch nooter, and relaunch for source code ideas and various threads regarding quick refresh and e-ink support.
Disclaimer: Now, what I am using currently is the bare minimum, I have tried quite a bit of the work in this forum and it works well, but I wasn't satisfied or 100% confident and I wanted less installed. So, I restored my nook to stock, used noogie and copied over a rooted ramdisk. That was it, no touchcolortools, nooktouchtools installed, adw minimal this or that, or button saviors. I am sure they are great programs but I don't know enough about them or have the interest/time to do research on them to want to keep them installed.
For me, the point is to keep things simple and maintain battery life. It's an e-reader not a tablet after all. I just want to read books, check email, check a website or two, get some more use out of wi-fi since I don't live in a B&N supported nation.
To install:adb install EPubBrowser.apk
Optional:
I also installed Email.apk and set up my gmail from there, no certificates required or a million google app files and plucking a chicken on a Tuesday after jumping on your left foot crap. No offense to those who like chicken plucking.
adb install Email.apk
Done and done.
I can do up a CWM zip upon request, but last going off I have a continuous reboot after installing the latest version and if you know enough to get the Nook's CWM installed you should be able to use adb.See attached files.
What is not working:
Since Android doesn't really know about multiple external storage locations (at least for the Nook's 2.1 and/or my knowledge of android) EPubBrowser is unable to detect when the internal storage has been remounted, there is no notification of that, just notification of external storage. So if you plug in your usb cord to the computer the list of books will be empty even when you remove it. So if you don't have an sdcard you will have to hit the back button and launch home again to refresh.
Also, B&N books are not listed, whatever is in My Files will be scanned only. That applies to internal and sdcard storage. You can still use B&N's Library to access those.
I don't have any option of uninstalling apps either. adb uninstall works fine or you can just delete files from /data/app via adb shell.
What is working:
Launch of EPubBrowser via nook's home button, without use of nooktouchtools, it duplicates how the B&N home app works.
The notification icon for resuming reading goes through the app. As long as the book was launched from EPubBrowser it can remember the last book, otherwise the main display will show up. Reason being that for whatever reason the last page read doesn't work with the B&N home screen if it's not a book bought from B&N. But if you are just using the B&N Reader app it's not a problem.
When you are prompted which home you want you can select EPubBrowser and hit default. This may not stay set and will go away the next time you reboot.
How to use:Left / right swipes to go to the next 6, previous 6 books, no indication of the current page is displayed, (e-ink and aesthetics).
Touch a book cover to launch a description of the book, swipe up and down to scroll through the description, touch the cover displayed there to start reading. Hit back button on top of screen to exit without launching a book.
To bring up the list of apps installed, swipe a clockwise circle starting at 10 O'clock. Touch an app to launch it, left or right swipe to go back to main screen. That's it for now.
If you have any ideas for improvements, bug reports, please provide as much detail as possible, and when you have done that add some more detail.
Cheers!
Updates:
2/19/2012:
Added screensaver for last read book. (Jpeg 75%) Settings->Display->Screensavers->EPubBrowser
11/4/2012:
Added src project
Looks nice! I'll give it a shot later when my Nook's charged.
Thank you for making and sharing, i am going to try tomorrow and tell you,
Improvements
First of all, thank you for creating this cool launch screen. I love the simplicity of it. Here are is brief list of improvement that you can perhaps easily implement.
-When on the homescreen with the covers of all the books, I am not sure if I am suppose to scroll down or to the right to view the rest of my books.
-When on the page with the details from the book, there is no back button to take you back to the homescreen. I end up using the button savior back button.
-The circle gesture that takes you to the apps does not feel very responsive to me.
Anyhow, great job. Can't wait to see how you plan on improving it
OW MY EYES
I installed this, and everything just kept flashing. GO Locker and GO Launcher are both broken, and the only way I could fix it was by getting into ADW and closing the task. Did I install it incorrectly? I put it onto an SD card and used ES File Manager to install it.

-When on the page with the details from the book, there is no back button to take you back to the homescreen. I end up using the button savior back button.
-The circle gesture that takes you to the apps does not feel very responsive to me.
Anyhow, great job. Can't wait to see how you plan on improving it

Hi,
Thanks for the feedback.
You swipe left to go to the previous page of books. You swipe right to go to the next page of books, assuming you have more than 6 books. Personally, I know what books I have on the device so it's not a problem knowing how many are left to see for me.
The back button should be on top of the screen in the middle, not sure why it wouldn't be there on yours. I will give it a think, maybe remove the scroll control in the book description and just use gesture detection and scroll the text via code.
Responsiveness and speed will likely improve over time, I am using the gesture library, maybe there are some optimizations there I can do.
Cheers!

I installed this, and everything just kept flashing. GO Locker and GO Launcher are both broken, and the only way I could fix it was by getting into ADW and closing the task. Did I install it incorrectly? I put it onto an SD card and used ES File Manager to install it.

Hi,
Noted, so it doesn't work with GO Lancher/Locker. Never tried GO stuff, so that wasn't tested. It was tested with ADW and relaunch, and I had all the rest of your typical touch nooter install there without problems, android market, etc.
I have run it with Home.apk renamed to Home.apk.bak and that works fine as well.
As for your other question, if it is installed it is installed, there are no configurations to modify, however you get it there it should be fine.
Cheers!
WANT
Noted that it does not work with go, will have to get rid of that first.
From the screenshots, I can already tell you put time into polishing! Good job!

I'll try it again without the GO software, but it was making everything just keep flashing, like the lock screen.
@NFHimself, any plans for taking this to github? It is very close to what I always wanted but I was also looking for:
- some kind of usage of Calibre data
- library filtering for series, highly rated, etc.
- tracking of books that are clicked to maintain sort of recent read filter
- sorting options by rating, series, and other Calibre properties
- option to display 6 or 12 (smaller) book covers.
I hope it already does use intents for selecting a different epub reader for those who have no defaults and multiple ones installed.
I know its a long list, and I have some Android experience. I am sure there would be other developers here so a combined effort might help.

Hi,
I use Calibre as well, I just connect via adb and calibre picks up the nook and I copy books over and it converts on the fly, cool program. Using Calibre data is an idea worth looking into, if I can fit it into the theme of no preferences, no extra buttons or config. There are plenty of those kind of home apps already. Relaunch for one is great, just missing a graphical front end, I was going to mod that, but decided that I didn't really need so much stuff and I wanted to learn more android API.
I did up the app using pretty straight forward epub standards (note the plural), it works with most epubs I have run across, not sure if looking for extra xml is a good functionality vs performance tradeoff. I haven't been using EPubBrowser for very long myself, so when I add more books and find something annoying I will probably make changes to fix it. I want to keep things simple, if I need a preferences menu, it is already going the wrong way.
I am not specifying any class, just a regular launch this epub file intent, so it should work with any reader. I like the stock reader myself, cool reader seems to dislike some epubs I have above a certain size, and I didn't want to deal with it.
I may github it, I am kinda time limited these days.
Cheers!

Hi,
More details are needed to figure that out. What device do you have? What do you have installed on it?
Cheers!
I just wiped then manually rooted my Nook, and this works now. Although I'm having some trouble with getting to the apps page after the first time I did it. Could you possible change how you get to the apps page? Maybe change it so you have to click the menu key to get to apps.
Edit: Now that I've added my books, it shows me two books, one empty, and another book. Now it just flashes and removes/re-adds the last book. :/
Edit 2: I found that there are a few books that just don't like this launcher and cause the entire Nook to start flashing. I've been adding my books one by one to see which work and which don't and I'll try and find similarities between those that don't.
Great launcher replacement.
Running right now, but after the second page, I get sent back to the first, regardless of left-to-right or right-to-left swiping. Ideas?
Also, any chance for a page up/down use for scrolling through books?
I took a quick vid. It looks like when I swipe again from R to L, it tries to redraw the next books, but gets confused?

Hi,
I'm busy painting the baby's room, but it looks like it is resetting, perhaps one of your books is crashing the app and it is being relaunched as the home screen. Or could be some other bug, how many books are involved, if you remove one or add one, does it go away?
If someone could open the e-pub (it's a zip file) that causes the error and paste the contents of the .odf file (it's an xml file) , that would help.
Cheers!

I've gone through and removed / added ebooks, and still the same problem.
Sorry, been kinda busy.
I need to be able to see the bug on my end to work on it. Maybe I've been lucky with the book selections I have made or converting using Calibre has set them all to have the same kind of format, vs the variety you might see in the wild from multiple sources.
Does the error happen with no books?
What happens when you have just one book?
How many books do you have on your nook? (If it's something like 1000 then yeah, maybe you'd have issues, no checks in the code for being out of memory.)
What firmware are you using?
Are there any hardware differences? (Can't imagine that being a problem, but I am using a NST, not the original Nook.)
What can I do to reproduce this error on my end? What are the steps?
Cheers!

For me, it doesn't matter how many books I have, it's just a few specific books that crash, independent of the other books in my library, and some books are more severe than others (one makes the entire Nook start flashing (all software), others make only this app flash).
I have the same problem as the people above but I can't get past the first page. I can't seem to narrow it down to a certain book making it crash. It's a shame I love this home screen, but hopefully we can get this fixed and running great.
Welcome to Part II of the basics of ROM building.
If you have not had a chance yet, please check out this link. This should be followed after all of the "files" are gotten from the first part of this Trilogy of tutorials. Okay enough Lord of the Rings, the true trilogy (nerd reference may be criticized below, I preferred the matrix until the third one lol) I digress.
So, we have the files we downloaded them, Red bull/Rockstar/Monster/Bawls, whatever your legal poison. Let's set up working directories.
Organization is critical to the development process. I mean, I only realized this after I started modifying. I mean wow, it was so much easier once I started to record notes and logs.
To begin, always go to a root of a hard drive
Create a folder called
Rom
Tools and then create a new folder called Smali and APKTOOL
Multimedia and then create a new folder called Pictures and Sounds
So we have created 5 folders, do you need 5? No. Do you need 20? It doesn't matter, do what you are comfortable with. It is about staying organized.
Take the ROM you have selected from the first Basics Rom Tutorial. I assume for (hint hint) simplicities sake you chose a DeOdexed rom version of the Sprint S3 MD4 rom. Freeza Thank you. It will be in a zip file
Called: MD4_update_FULL_DeOdex.zip
Rename it to MD4.zip, feel free to call it whatever you want (remember feel comfortable). I will refer to it as MD4 from now on for simplicities sake.
So you have 7-zip installed right? Uh Oh, check, make sure that is ready to go before we start.
I cannot go into that tutorial because....well come onnnnnnn is it really that hard to press next 10 times or less ?
Extract all the files to MD4_Version_1
Oh yeah, we will be making hundreds of versions if you want. Trust me later down the line, after each mod is good, you can just continue naming them in increments. But version control should always be implemented in case you mess something up. So the logic is:
Make 1 mod or set of mods, try mod, if it works keep using that version as your base version and keep going until you are ready to try it again. Mind you it is time consuming but the only way you truly learn this backwards art of reverse engineering.
So lets look at this disaster. I mean it's overwhelming so do not think you are King of the Hill or Any hill. Maybe a mole hill because this a very complicated system in front of us.
Let's analyze the anatomy, BTW, I do not even know what everything does or is, but by all means, ask questions and we will find out. A forum is meant to voice opinions and feedback to those opinions.
The root folder has 2 folders and 2 files
META-INF
system
boot.img
installbusybox
The META-INF folder is extremely important. It contains useful information about signatures and is very necessary for android to" say its official software" remember the idea of this folder, not its contents. I do not mess with this META-INF but there are so many all over the place down the road that we will need to know it plays an important role.
The system folder has every file that we are going to modify, we will hit this folder harder than a head crab being hit by another "delay" at Valve.
The boot.img is an important file for booting up android. We will not be touching that right now. Can you? Sure but hell, don't bother with it for this tutorial. If you know all about ROM mods like some of our bad-ass developers ( yes Cyanogen all of you are badass), Stop reading get to better pastures.
The installbusybox should be there for tools for ROM modifications. It is basically a set of functions that makes Android have teeth. I will not be using it right now but we can keep going. The best tools collected into one so do not delete or modify
Lets get to the meat, the big shabang, the wholy mole(for my Latin friends), the kabosh(for whoever knows what that is)
System
The sub folders are:
app: Contains all the apps that come with the ROM. Remember android operates by utilizing apps for different functions. Modify the files in here can be good and bad, we can make the best tweaks ever here or ruin everything. Be very careful, I have had boot hangs happen to these files
bin: This folder appears mysterious but it contains important files, the binary files. Complexity gets checked right here. This folder is extremely sensitive, I have not modified this folder just yet but when I feel like bricking my phone like a gravity gun dropping combine soldiers, I will get to this asap.
cameradata: Contains important files for camera raw data to JPEG conversion, I do not mod this folder.
csc: This is a jewel, it contains Consumer Software Customization. It has multiple XML files that can be edited and modified critical settings for various functions. Very nice to start your ROM customization here, but not the easiest, lets ease in with another folder first.
etc: This folder contains critical data storage. It has things like the hosts file which will allows you to block ads(cough cough, youtube) and many other files. This folder can brick your phone. Lets not get crazy here...yet
fonts: Pretty obvious, fonts for the ROM, oh and it requires True Type Fonts so contact your local free repository for those.
framework: This folder is an important folder, almost just as important as the app folder
hdic: Language files they are based off the first 2 initials of the language. Not affecting anyone if we are not trying to pinch each ROM's size down to the bare minimum
lib: Library folder, this has files with extension .SO, they will contain libraries of information for different functions. For example, how to take a "Best Pose" picture mode would have functions in this folder as well as other areas of the rom.
media: Contains the most obvious of sounds and a prime location for android universal sounds and bootimages. The bootimages is a touchy subject, the files are Samsung proprietary which makes them useless to us for modification, but we can make the puppet dance one way or another. The sounds, however, are key as we can isolate sounds when the phone starts up, or mute certain camera functions here, we can even make it sound like all of your favorite games(Yes I did, Mechwarrior boot sounds are acceptable, F.E.A.R. sound effects and some DOOM noises added for ambiance and of course Half life 2 noises for complete nerdgasm)
T9DB: This folder contains T9 predictive text in I believe 3 languages: English, Spanish and Korean, can you get rid of 2 of these sure, but expect problems if you decide later you need them. I mean they are not that large in size but at the same time, everyone has their own way of doing things
tts: This folder houses the Text to Speech programs. They suck. I am sorry but they do, SVOX is better, I love IVONA personally. I always like a british women to wake me up and tell me I am late. But that's me.
usr: This folder is not really meant for us to modify as it has to do with the keyboard layout, grammar recognition and customization. Realistically though, I use Swiftkey and call it a day. So do not hate me if I do not bother with mucking around here. It is useful to some I am sure but nothing I want to dabble in. But by all means, it can be useful for setting well Settings.
vendor: Contains library and binary files for certain features from the vendor, I would say camera related but I do not care for this folder just like people really hated the HEV suit announcing all of its amazing features, are you kidding me that was the best part. Yes I fell 100 feet, please let me know about my fracture and how this suit somehow repaired it. It might have well said "Oww". Nothing wrong with that.
voicebargeindata: From my understanding, Svoice related. No need to bother, that feature is about as useful as a Crowbar in a Gun Fight.
vsc: Version Software Control
wakeupdata: Acoustic and Grammar models contains several languages as well
xbin: Has busy box and Super User, a useful tool to become well super.
build.prop: Very sensitive file that is magical and detrimental. There is a lot of false promises on performance with this one. We will dig through this one carefully.
CSCVersion.txt: Should have the model number of your phone
SW_Configuration.xml XML file with more model number configuration
Please feel free to let me know what is understood or not.
This run down allows us to attack the appropriate folders for the next parts
Before we even begin with the complicated mods, let's attack the basic mods first.
The media Folder then go to audio, there is 4 folders
alarms
notifications
ringtones
ui
The first 3 folders you can place anything you want inside. They each correspond to the default ringtones you would like in the phone. I recommend using .ogg files or .mp3 files, you can use Audacity to modify your sounds. Sometimes the length of the sound plays an important role. Short sounds should be kept short for a reason. If you play a noise and its barely half a second, do not make it 4 seconds long because it will sound ridiculous longer than what is meant to sound. Taking a picture while hearing Puff Daddy's Come with Me can be quite awkward but hey its all about your ROM, your choice, your likes. Who the hell is going to tell you that you cannot have a sound of a crowbar whacking a headcrab while in the middle of a busy subway.....besides the police. This works similarly to the situation of ringtones, keep them full blown songs and I have noticed some lag. Do not be discouraged, but most modern phones end the call after about 30 seconds. This time limit has to do with how long the phone is takes to find the phone and ping it. Of course, I safely recommend 45 seconds of your song to cover yourself.
Take note that there are 3 files in these folders that are set to default (ringtone, alarm and notification). We can change that with the build.prop but that's after we mess with the ui folder that contains the User Interface Sounds.
Alert_on_call.ogg: An Alert when you are on call. This should be subtle noise
Auto_focus.ogg: Tricky one, I modified this, still makes an auto focus noise. Clearly a trick has been devised
Auto_focus_error.ogg: Same as above
Call_Connect.ogg: When the call first connects
Cam_Start.ogg: Video Recorder start noise
Cam_Stop.ogg: Video Recorder stops noise
camera_click.ogg: Camera Click noise
Camera_click_short.ogg: Camera Click noise
Camera_empty.ogg: Camera related
camera_focus.ogg: Tricksie this one is, mute and still makes noise, will discuss where noise is coming from
Camera_Timer.ogg: Timer for camera countdown
Camera_Timer_2sec.ogg: 2 Second timer
Charger_Connection.ogg: When you plug in your phone to charging port
Dialer_new.ogg: Tricky one will get to later
Dock.ogg: When you put the phone on dock, useful to distinguish from charger_connection.ogg
Effect_Tick.ogg: I have heard it whilst changing pictures but not sure
Highlight.ogg: I Silenced it, and "I dont know whhhyyy"( Can you guess which comedian said this line and if you know it say it in his voice)
HoverPointer.ogg: I Silenced it, and "I dont know whhhyyy"( Can you guess which comedian said this line and, if you know it, say it in his voice)
Insert.ogg: Google Voice Noise
KeypressDelete.ogg: Default keyboard, I do not use this
KeypressReturn.ogg: Default keyboard, I do not use this
KeypressSpacebar.ogg: Default keyboard, I do not use this
KeypressStandard.ogg: Default keyboard, I do not use this
Lock.ogg: When you press the power button and it instantly locks. This noise will play. Mechwarrior noise here
LowBattery.ogg: Doom low amm noise here to indicate I should have brought a charger becuase my battery is low
New_chat.ogg: Chat software related, I got rid of that junk but thats for another tutorial
PowerOff.ogg: Most people silence this as it is the noise that powers off the phone, I got creative here but you do not have to.
PowerOn.ogg: Most people silence this as it is the noise that powers on the phone, I got creative here but you do not have to.
S_HW_Touch.ogg: The HW indicates Hardware touch, basically the buttons and any touch screen action
S_SIP_Backspace.ogg: Backspace stuff
Sent_chat.ogg: See New_chat.ogg
Shutter.ogg: Silence this for sure if you do not want noise but really silence everything camera related here and it wont be 100%. So just do it
Shutter_multiple.ogg: Burst shot related
TW_Battery_caution.ogg: Any TW has to do with TouchWiz related actions. This one is for battery
TW_Call_Disconnect.ogg: The tricky thing is, some of these are controlled by another piece of software, this one is one of them
TW_Error.ogg:
TW_Silent_mode_off.ogg:
TW_SIP.ogg: Sounds like the default tapping sound for the rom's built in keyboard
TW_Touch.ogg: The default TouchWiz touch noise. Tricky little one this was as I had to verify there was no other location for the droplet noise, it turns out there is, so stay tuned as we dig into the apps and locate where the rest of the sounds are
TW_Unlock_Glass.ogg: Gallery Noises for file management
TW_Unlock_Puzzle.ogg: Gallery Noises for file management, not sure why I heard these exact noises in the gallery app other than they are linked
TW_Volume_control.ogg: The volume rocker button on the side, i mean logically there is only one choice, the Half Life 1 Medical Bay MedShot sound, okay maybe too annoying sure, but bada$$
Undock.ogg: Removing the phone from the dock that so few of us get because you know it doesn't fit my big case, or expanded battery or whatever. You know what, custom solutions are too expensive but trust me people do make the docks that accommodate bigger cases
Unlock.ogg: When you type in your Pin/Password/Pattern, the sound that it makes to unlock
VideoRecord.ogg: Camera video start recording noise, of course, I silenced this one as well
So this takes care of some of the noises, the problem is, Samsung software actually hides the rest of the noises. They are actually hidden away in the APK files in the system/app folder. Do not worry, in future parts of this Discovery channel special on Black Mesa, we will be investigating why they detonated a nuke in the first place if it didnt do anything to stop the invasion. I mean future parts of this series
So where do we go now? Well modify the sounds you want or add the ringtones you want. But something that I felt was important was that certain noises be set when I reboot my rom by default. No I do not want that stupid Samsung whistle! NO ONE DOES SAMSUNG!.
Lets set the default sounds on ROM start up, we will need to modify the build.prop file
This file contains an amazingly large set of instructions for the start-up of the phone and features in the phone. it is therefore, very sensitive to screw-ups. Hopefully, notepad++ was installed.
Navigate in Windows to the working directory of your ROM in our case MD4/system/ there is a file there that says build.prop
Let's open that up in notepad++, we should see some intimidating pieces of code or more like lines of text that tell the phone what and when to do something.
A caution to all, the build.prop has been synonymous with words like "increase performance", "maximize battery life" and other claims that are unfortunately sometimes not always true, for every mod someone makes to this file, someone traces the code to a Gingerbread rom that is useless on Jelly Bean, or an old reference to ICS(Ice Cream Sandwich),
I would highly suggest we not dabble too much on this. XDA has some great people who have found great information about the build.prop file. This link, user Chris_84 has put a great Wikipedia together on this so I will not try and explain each one. But there are so many other links that can show a post of good tweaks and bad tweaks and useless tweaks that I will not go into. Let's instead focus on our start-up sounds
The build.prop code we will scroll to with the ctrl+f button should be enough for us to get started is
Code:
ro.config.alarm_alert=
ro.config.ringtone=
ro.config.notification_sound=
Each of these do have a word after the equal sign, which means if you configure the correct file in the correct folder(hint hint) alarm, ringtone, notification folders we talked about earlier, all you have to do is add the name of the file exactly as it appears, please only use .ogg files here. MP3 files also work but you know just do it okay. I don't ask Alex why she never made a move on me, I just know she cant have a meaningful relationship with a guy who doesn't even say hi, that's a little creepy but you know and I know she loves Freeman alright.
As an example, just in case my rant did not make any sense,
let's say you put the following sound in the system/media/audio/ringtones folder kick_push_lupe.ogg
you would put in the code the following
Code:
ro.config.alarm_alert=
ro.config.ringtone=
ro.config.notification_sound=[B]kick_push_lupe.ogg[/B]
And that's how simple that is.
So you say you have ranted on too long. Sure I have, but that's not going to be the end here. We will be modifying the rest of this rom business in the more difficult lesson which is part III, that will take the longest because we want to have fun. And I still have some Freduian issues with my role model Gordon Freeman that I need to bring out. Anyway
Also, before I go, you might ask, how do you execute TEST BATCH ALPHA-TRON!.
Go Back to your Home Folder MD4_Version_1/. You should see the folders we discussed earlier
META-INF
system
boot.img
installbusybox
Select all of those files and right click the mouse button to get a context menu from 7-zip or WinRAR and click Add to archive. Make a ZIP FILE ONLY. You can choose to compress the file if you want, I just click fastest compression options available and proceed.
When the zip file is in hand, I take the file and put it on the SD Card root directory. When it transfers(in about 5 minutes), you can open the CWM (clockworkmod) recovery or the TWRP recovery and install the ROM. Sure I did skip some steps here on how you get these recoveries and the like but this tutorial is about ROM modification and the sort not the super basics, you need those to even be reading these. If you need to get those going, let me know in the comments and we can spool that up in part III.
I do not know how many parts this will take, but it is time consuming, i have to research this stuff and recall my notes. I know the spirit of the guide is in the right place but please be patient. I will not fail you Krypton(YES I LIKED MAN OF STEEL, let the downvotes begin, oh wait not imgur).
I appreciate all feedback, do not get me wrong, and I will work whenever I am free to add as many of these parts as I can. I do want to help anyone out who has their own twist on what they want their ROM to do. It is the least I can do to payback this great community and assist one person or inspire one idea. That is all it took for me to get going, the next part will also have a very heavy hand in taking code from other people for examples of mods. I want to say from now, I did not do any of these codes, I used common sense to implement somehow into my own rom mods. They deserve all credit as they are amazing coders/crackers/hackers/whackers/ whatever you name it they truly deserve the praise. I am just compiling their logic into our ROM that we are building together. And has anyone seen the YouTube channel Vsauce, that channel is AWESOME.
Again, thank you. Very, very helpful.
