When the physical keyboard is enabled and I press and hold a key, like ‘c’, there’s a pop-up with some other characters I can choose from. It’s awkward to have to touch the screen to choose the character when my fingers are on the physical keyboard so it would be great if I could, after the pop-up, travel between the characters with the TAB key and select one with the ENTER key.
Anyone finds this useful?
constantly running into this problem..

hi guys , i know this might seem a strange question but like most my stylus is loose in the holder and i sometimes need to use the keyboard to do most things on the unit and i cant find anywhere that activates the start option on the screen. I have done it by accident once but nothing since. i have checked the manual and it mentions it no where all operations seem to be around the stylus?
does anyone know what key combination it is ?
I have a 02 phone and unlike tmobile which has a one of the 4 buttons on front setup to do this as one of the defaults.
cheers in advance
It should be ctrl+escape on a full keyboard. It might also be enabled by the windows or context menu keys, not sure what your keyboard looks like.
You can use my VJKeypress to get this as well. I think it's keycode 91, not sure, check my website.

Why not assign one of the hardware buttons to do this, each one can have a duel function assigned either a tap or hold, according to the phone, in reality this doesn't work (unless anyone knows different - latest O2 ROM - not messed around with), whatever you set for a tap is also carried accross to the hold function, go to settings and locate the power buttons icon select it, then select the button you want (ok for example) then assign the <Start Menu> from the drop down box, press OK, the device might want a soft reset (mine did when I just tried this), when it comes back up hit the assigned button, and use the four way thumb control to navigate through the menus, it saves sliding out the keyboard and it becoming loose - Mike
cheers for this when i tried to reassign buttons before like the camera it wouldnt let me change them ..i hate the camera button getting accidently caught same as the record one as well.
cheers for the advance will do that would just like to know for my own peace of mind as well how to use the keyboard to do it, it should be possible.
Hi,
Has anyone managed to find a way to get the i780 to be able to select text without touching the screen?
I cant hold my shift key and scrub my optical DPAD and select text, and the only way i can select text is by tapping on the screen which is highly infuriating!
What do you guys do?

Yes. Heres the trick.
while in the texting window,
1. turn ON 780 cursor
2. double press the UP arrow key on the keyboard (the uppercase key)
3. numeric keypad now controls the cursor as 780curson is on, press the 4 and 6 keys and observe that the test is being selected
Was thinking of ordering one, curious how unlocking the Xoom worked with the keyboard. Thanks!
I just checked and no, you cannot unlock with the keyboard. You can switch the screen on duration to fit your needs.

Actually, yes you can. if you have a keyboard with the "menu" key (usually on the right side of the keyboard near the Ctrl+Alt keys) it will work. I tried it last night and from sleep, one press takes to the unlock screen, one more unlocks the Xoom. Even without the Motorola Android specific keyboard, I found a lot of amazing shortcuts on a normal keyboard, do a google search, there are a lot, from opening Gmail/the browser to composing e-mails, etc. Just typing on the home screen brings up the search, which is great, and you can navigate most things, including going between home screens with the arrow keys. It convinced me that using the Xoom as a mini laptop replacement is relatively possible.
Hmmm, I tried every key on the moto keyboard and it will not wake it. Interesting that a generic keyboard would have that function.
I really do like the official keyboard however, I wish there was some way to map some of the keys. Its not really optimized for 3.0. Some of they keys do nothing and I haven't found a way to access the app drawer. A bit disappointing.
I think you modify the keylayout file so the button you want to wake has the "WAKE" attribute.
any idea on how to modify the keylayout on the motorola BT keyboard?
Half-way there
Actually, you can bypass the lock screen by hitting the "settings" button (or whatever it is called) 2 keys to the right from your spacebar on the Moto keyboard. However, I still can't get it to actually wake via a keypress.
Edit the /system/usr/keylayout/Vendor_22b8_Product_093d.kl file, assuming you are rooted.
On line 99, add the word WAKE beside MENU like this:
key 125 MENU WAKE
Save it and reboot. Be sure to make a backup of this file first in case you have any issues. Press Menu button once to bring it out of sleep and a second time to unlock it.
Thanks. I'm actually not rooted. Maybe I'll give that a try as well...
this worked perfectly! thanks very much
I have gotten my Xoom to wake up by pressing and holding the power button on the keyboard. It doesnt always work. It seems to depend of if the keyboard is awake itself. I have gotten them apps menu to open using the keyboard as well - its not an easy task. It depends on your ability to navigate to the top line on the home screen. Pressing enter will allow you to see if you have selected the top line (the top line is the row with the apps button, text and voice search, and the plus button). I can press alt+tab to select row, and then can cycle through the 4 options using tab. It is really hard to know which option you are on since it does not highlight as you cycle through. You simply press enter when you think you have it right. I think its much easier to just start typing the name of the app you wish to use and allow the xoom to search for it.

Is there any way to find out what file will be used for a keyboard? I bought a generic BT keyboard from eBay that has lots of Apple-specific keys. I wanted to remap them to take advantage of Android commands. I got the scancodes for each key and modified the Generic.kl file. In this file, however, it recommends to create a separate file for each device but I have no idea how I would make HC aware to use the specific file. Any ideas?
Hi guys this post is mainly for everyone using a livedock with a keyboard...just now I've been playing with the keyboard trying to figure out how I can bring the notifcation bar down via keyboard as I have not got a spare mouse. I come across these shortcuts. Hope they help:
1) The windows key or the home key takes you back to the home screen
2) enter key selects highlighted app or buttion
3) pg up/pg down acts as it does on windows I.e. scrolling up or down
4) the little menu button next to the right alt and right ctrl brings up the menu of android...I.e. on the home screen pressing this key will bring up the shortcut for adding widgets changing wallpaper accessing settings etc
5) holding down the windows key will bring up the recently open apps
So far this is what I've found. If I find anymore I will add to the list. If anyone comes across anymore shortcuts feel free add

Does anyone know how I can change the settings of the physical keyboard? Prior to using this ROM (which I think is fantastic!), I liked how the keyboard was. If I wanted to enter a special character or a number, I would just tap "ALT" and then click the corresponding key, and "ALT" would just go away after that one hit. Same thing for capitalization, just tap the up arrow once and only the first letter is capitalized, whereas if you hit it twice, then it will be in all caps.
However, in Mimicry, you tap it once and it has the effect of tapping it twice which locks in either alt or caps lock, which I don't like. Can I change any settings? Thanks!
Are you using SwiftKeys 3, if you are that's been a known bug for a while on it.
