Mobile data turns on when wifi turns off? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've noticed that whenever I turn off my wifi connection, the mobile data connection automatically turns itself on. This is quite annoying as I usually have it turned off to conserve battery.
Is there any way to disable this?
Thanks in advance.

No as the Desire is a smart phone which always needs a connection to the Internet to update - it's working as designed

Well if the user specifically wants to turns off the APN connection and keep it off until manually turned on, I don't see why that's such a big ask. I only want to have control of my phone, not the other way around.

I use Honolulu Team's Extended Controls to switch both wi-fi and mobile data off when not required.

I also use this, but if I have wifi turned on for example (with mobile data turned off prior), when I turn off the wifi the mobile data immediately activates without my say so.
There must be some way to disable this automatic connecting.

Data Button can't be selected

The Data Button (#5) in the Comm Manager can't be selected to turn it on most of the time. After I turned the data (EDGE) off to use Wifi it can't be turn back on.
Anyone else having this prob?
bumpity bump
You shouldn't needity need to turnity turn it offity off.
If Wifi is connected you will use Wifi... And if the data button is grayed out it means there is no data connection anyways.
Wifi is not connected and I do need to turn data on. The Wifi could be turned off and it still does this.
i think it will only turn on when you use a program that uses data. i could be wrong, i noticed that to but didnt really pay much attention to it.
I could be using Opera Mini and the Data section can't be selected.
A data connection, eg GPRS, will be turned on automatically when connection manager determines that it is the 'cheapest' connection to use. No ROM that I've ever tried will let you turn it on per say using the GUI. If you are having problems using a data conneciton, it's probably best to check the defaults selected in the connection settings or in the registry.
To turn it off, the GUI should work, but sometimes it's a bit slow to update, i.e. to realise that there is a data connection present.

Anyone can answer about data connection?

When I read the HTC Desire user manual, it said that I need to turn on the "Data Connection" setting to have internet connection.
Well, this is understandable ... but, does it has automatic connection on demand?
On Windows Mobile, I dont have to specifically turn on data connection. Whenever an app is trying to reach the internet, it will turn on the data connection automatically.
And of course, it will turn-off the data connection automatically as well, when there is no internet network activity.
Does this also the same in Android?
It should turn on automaticly when you try to use online services...
But you can turn it on in Wireless & Network
You have to option to turn mobile data off, that is why it specifies that you need a data connection.
If you do not turn it off, apps that require internet access will use it with no further interaction.
By default MENU -> Settings -> Wireless & networks -> Mobile network was off on my device, meaning it would not connect to internet via 3G (I could still make/receive calls). However, I chose to use WiFi for set-up when I first started the phone, so maybe that's why.
Anyway, I guess that is the setting they are talking about.
Thanks for your information, but that raise a question:
When I switch off the data connection and also switch off the background data option.
Will the HTC Weather widget (and other similar widget) still work with auto-updating periodically?

NO... they need either 3G or WiFi connection to update...
So, that means ... those apps cannot wake up (turn-on) the data connection automatically if needed (on-demand) ...

I do remember the old days of the HTC Hero which had the option of background data usage. I think that was more to do with the version of Android than anything else. I recently had the Nexus One and on the new 2.1 version of Android, you can either switch data on or off, no automated connections on data usage.
When the phone is sleeping (screen off) nearly everything is powered down anyway, even if the data connection is 'on'. Apps will wake the device (an power up radios as required) to do their updates when they need to.

The whole idea of being able to turn your mobile data connection off is to disable mobile data completely. This is a very good option if you are roaming in a foreign country or don't have a fixed data plan.
If you leave the mobile data connection to enabled, applications will "turn-on" the data connection if needed (on-demand). In other words, if the mobile data connection is enabled, the mobile data connection will be in standby, waiting for applications to request use of the connection.
Hope this clarifies it for you, as you appeared to misunderstand my last post.
Ok then
I think it has different meaning compared to the Windows Mobile.
In the COMM MANAGER, there is "Data Connection" toggle which normally is OFF. And this does not mean that the device cannot use 3G data connection.
While on Android, its data connection toggle setting means to enable or disable 3G data connection completely.
I think that is the difference, if we look from Windows Mobile point of view.
Thanks.

[Q] Auto switch between 3G to wifi mode

This is a feature I was trying to use with WM6 in the past but it wouldn't work. My question has to do with Android in general and with either Desire or Desire HD.
Let's say that I use a 3G data contract and sometimes I have wifi available as well (but not always in reach). I want to save my 3G data because I pay per kb and prefer to use wifi when available. Is it possible for Android to automatically connect to WiFi when it is in reach and when I move out of its reach, to revert to 3G?
If not, what is the way to handle this? for example, do I manually enable/disable one of the 2 and try which works?
I just turn both data and WiFi on and leave them on. That way as soon as I am in a WiFi zone like at home, it will automatically connect to WiFi.

So, to make this even more clear: you have them both turned on (3G and WiFi) and WiFi will take priority? and revert to 3G only when WiFi is unavailble?
and we are talking about which model? or maybe it'a all Andreoid the same?
I think its the same with all Android phones. If both 3g and WiFi are on WiFi will take priority. I am at work and have both turned on...as soon as I go home, the phone will connect via WiFi automatically.
By the way I have a desire too.

Thanks a lot. That means that desire will do for me. I don't know if that has been resolved with WM though, maybe it will be with WP7 but I think that Android will e a better option for now.
Hi, you can also save battery/money with softwares that automaticly close 3g/wifi for night. I use "data on demand" and "settings profile lite" to close both for night and also close wifi when my location is not home.

nice. are most of those software free for Android or you have to buy them? similar to WM?
Hi, both are free, just install through Android Market.

[Q] WiFi hotspot issue on Desire

Hi,I've noticed that once the WiFi hotspot settings is turned on on my mobile, the phone itself tends to consume data at the same time as the other WiFi enabled device is accessing the data connection.is this a normal thing? Or is there a setting that'll prevent the phone from accessing data at the same time as my tablet or laptop.Cos with both device using the hotspot, more data tend to be consumed which means I'll have to top up my data plan earlier than expected. Thanks in advance.
The way in which it works is that your phone gets used as a modem. Since when you enable hotspots, the phone can only do 1 thing. Either be a hotspot or have a wifi connection, not both. So when you enable hotspot it disables the wifi and uses your mobile data instead, thus your phone being a modem... so to speak.

[SOLVED] WiFi not working properly? 3G/4G stays on due "My Account" App

Also cant use the web or do anything like that but just send and receive text/calls.. and reason to this? maybe i have certain settings on that i don't know about? If i remember right, my wifi worked properly a few days ago.. but i cant remember exaclty. Help please? Thanks
no one knows?
Power cycle your router?
I've been having a different wifi issue. at home I have only edge coverage but I have petty good cable internet so obviously I want to use my wifi but for some reason the phone connects to wifi yet still uses the mobile network unless I turn off mobile data. My wifi sleep policy is set to never btw. Any ideas?

Edit
Also if I turn off mobile data while connected to wifi then turn it on while still connected it stays on wifi fine. Its like the mobile radio is preventing the wifi connection from fully initializing or something
Same issue!

I am having the same issue. I have to go into airplane mode, then turn on wifi to actually be able to use it... otherwise seems to default to mobile radio...
I have the same issue..this is what i do to work around it though:
1. Go to Settings>Wireless and Networks>Mobile Networks
2. Uncheck packet data, and then check it again.
Once i do this, my wifi works again, let me know if it works for you.

yes, does seem to work, but agree it's frustrating.... Hope they fix this soon.
Got this from the battery thread. This actually fixes the wifi issue on my SG2
The program is called Llama and can be downloaded from the market. I deleted all the default events and just added these 2. Hope this helps for all of you with this issue.

Try freezing "my account". It toggles data even with WiFi is on. Try it and let me know.

Actually saw this tread and had Llama installed with these 2 profiles added and was till getting this issue... Going to try Freezing My Account to see if that helps... I know it helped with my wifi issues on my G2x.
Update: Nothing seems to work now. Can't have Wifi and cell radio on at the same time... can get calls but nothing else...
I've seen it occasionally as well. I haven't needed to reboot though. It usually recovers after I toggle WiFi on and off and mess with some other things.

Same here. I have to toggle wifi on/off and sometimes reconnect through wifi settings to get it back.

Yes, either return or warranty exchange for a new one, I have not noticed this issue with my device at all.
I've been having the same issue and it definitely causes excessive battery drain. Sometimes toggling wifi off then on works. Other times it requires toggling mobile data off then on.
I had it happen just now and tried freezing 'my account' in titanium backup as suggested and my 4g indicator immediately turned off. Sweet! It seems that 'my account' is the culprit!
Edit: I really wish this topic wasn't merged...I think there were a couple 'wifi problem' threads talking about different issues. To clarify, my problem was that while on wifi my 4G indicator would sometimes turn on and consume more battery and (sometimes) force all data to use 4G instead of wifi. Really annoying!
