Rooting Slide but keep the stock rom?? How to?

I have a question
How can I root the Slide to get root permissions with superuser icon without having to flash a custom ROM. I Like the Stock ROM and want to keep it, all I want is to get Root permissions to be able to do wifi teher....is this possible and if yes....how?
I have tried searching the WIKI's but all of them say something different & i dont want to brick my phone....any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, it is possible. You'll want to root your phone, downgrade to the engineering build, and then flash ChiefzReloaded's Stock+OTA rom.

yes it's possible. it's called stock rooted. just follow the root tutorial. you will be rooted. no need to flash the eng build as you're not trying to flash a custom rom.

Noob question: Other than CR's ROM having the OTA, what other difference is there between stock rooted and the ROM?
Does tethering, apps2sd (ext) and such work on rooted stock?

you guys do realize that chiefzreloaded stock+ota rom, however close to being stock, is not the oem rom. That rom has tweaks.
To get the oem rom follow the directions to root you will end up with the completely 100% oem ROM (if you follow the original root guide) that you can install some root apps (like wifi tether). NOW if you want to flash the eng rom to have the release keys and ease of going into clockwork, then you want to go back into clockwork and make a nandroid. This way after flashing the eng you can restore the nandroid and still have all the benefits of eng release but have your fully stock rom. Also with that nandroid you always have your stock rom as a backup you can go back to w/o loosing root.

i ran stock rooted for a while before flashing another rom. my first was eugene's slidemeroot5r1. the reason i switched was apps2sd-ext, starting getting the low on space warning (annoying). after fooling around w/ some other roms & making nandroids of each, i am now on the ota rom.
tethering, if i'm not mistaken, should work on stock rooted. it's been a while so i truly can't recall. but you will need to download the program. ..you will not have the option of apps2sd. however, with some of these scripts floating around (firerat & darktremor) it may be possible. don't quote me on that.

that was the ONLY thing i forgot to do. smh. it was on my list and everything. when i was in the process of flashing the eng build, i couldn't for the life of me figure out to get back to clockwork. i was stuck on the red triangle lol. didn't find out till after i flashed another rom that i had to do vol up + power. ..my biggest regret.

No bubbles on icons = not worth it!

yes and all the system stuff that is messed with for apps2d and to get live wallpapers to work ..some people just want a factory engineered ROM

LOL the bubbles are easy to push back man just get them from com.htc.resources.apk from stock rom or older slidemeroot and then put them in the the htc.resources.apk from the CR Rom .. you could just push the entire stock apk but I dont know if something is "tweaked" in there

all you have to do is root it, downgrade to the Eng-release, and just jump into the recovery mode. after that reboot your phone and you should have the superuser icon

Umm no? Just follow eugenes root thread worked fine for me when I had stock

Okay so I'm getting a lot of great feedback....I have the latest OTA on my stock rom which I believe closes the loop for rooting....I read that if you have the new ota you have to install a custom rom for complete root access?? Is that correct?....

yes, me to. Also i want Clockwork in ROM. So which Steps i have to do?
I have the 2e Recovery,
First, root the Slide with the old method and backup my Rom with Nandroid
Second install the eng ROM.
Third Step Update the Radio
The Next Step? Restore the Backup? Ist this save? match the kernel to the system?

How to UNROOT the Jelly Bean 4.1.1?

Okay, I was on ICS 4.0.4 Yakju build. I flashed it using Gnex tool kit and then rooted the phone as well. Also left the bootloaded unlocked.
Today I received the OTA 4.1.1 Jelly Bean update. I began with the procedure and it downloaded well and good but then the installation was interrupted and the phone booted into my old 4.0.4 version. As it turns out, you should not accept the OTA update if you're rooted (lucky, I got away with it). I dont exactly know what caused my installation to fail, the root or the unlocked bootloader or both. Anyway, I used Gnex Tool Kit and 'Flashed the Google Factory Stock Rom' (exactly the same way how I got the yakju 4.0.4 build in the first place) , that left my phone with just as new Stock 4.0.4, UNROOTED with locked bootloader! Just like out of the box. Then I went on with my OTA update and it went through like a charm.
Anyway, now I'm on 4.1.1 Jelly Bean. I want to root the phone because I use too many apps that requires root access. So the latest version of Gnex Tool Kit (7.4) supports Jelly Bean root. But I dont wanna Root my phone this time unless I know how to UnRoot it. Don't wanna go against OTAs. (might start using CM rom when the next android version comes out) but till then I only want OTA updates.
So, can anyone tell me how to UNROOT the 4.1.1 Jelly Bean? (without wipe or deleting all the data) It'll be awesome if it can be done by Gnext Tool Kit. If not, then I dont mind doing it the hard way.
I wanted to post this question in 'Gnext toolkit' forum but I dont have enough privileges. So please help me out

Well root and your bootloader status (unlocked or not) really shouldn't affect your ability to receive an OTA IIRC. It should still work successfully although you may lose root.
Anywho, to unroot all you have to do is delete the 'superuser' application whether it be Superuser or SuperSu and then delete 'su' in /system/bin. That should work though IMO the cleanest way to unroot is to just restore the stock images.

Well, I guess you cant uninstall SuperUser. I tried that before updating but it acts like a system app and you cant delete it, unless you have 'System app remover' software, but then again it needs Root access to work so the whole thing is pointless I guess
And restore stock image HOW? I mean can you elaborate a lil please!
Using Gnex Tool Kit, which option? (my guess, 'Flash Google Factory Stock Rom' cuz for me it works but it wipes all your data.. backup solution?)

Installing supersu and giving it root access to update such binary removes original superuser apps control you can switch just by downloading super su so it should work, cannot test myself though

Root is Gone?

So all of sudden, my rooted S3 is not rooted anymore.
I wanted to use Titanium Backup and it says
"Sorry, I could not acquire root privileges. This application will *not* work! Pleasre verify that your ROM is rooted, and try again.
This attempt was made using the "/system/xbin/su" command."
and then I tried my other root applications such as Greenify, App Ops and they are all saying my phone isn't rooted anymore.
I don't understand, I never upgraded my phone after I rooted and I never flashed a different rom and kept the Touchwiz Rom.

It isn't.
The following message pops up:
"There is no SU binary installed, and SuperSU cannot install it. This is a problem!
If you just upgraded to Android 4.3, you need to manually re-root - consult the relevant forums for your device!"

Would I lose all my data?
In terms of re flash root66, that means simply using Odin and re-rooting my phone like I do the first time right? Would it be the same instructions too?

I'm not sure if you are going to lose your data.. so that's why I said to back everything up, just in case.
And yes.. same method as before from that post.

Befoe you flash again. Try uninstalling then installing supersu again

I can't uninstall supersu as it gives me no option to do so. I can only uninstall all updates that were applied but not complete remove and then install it.

I had this happen on my Tmobile Galaxy S3.
I read somewhere else on XDA that you just had to install the latest SuperSU, in zip form, from recovery mode.
I havent posted enough here to be able to post a link, but you can find it on chainfires website.
Then reboot and it should work.

Next question if i use the the fully unroot method then flash stock recovery is that all i have to do?

That depends on exactly what you are trying to accomplish. What is your reason for unrooting and returning to stock (as it sounds like that is what you are trying to do)?

Not really trying the get back to stock, i use su temporary with a app now im finish with it i just want to remove it, i did not change no system files nothing just use it to gain access with a app.

Then just unroot with SU.
Restoring stock recovery is only necessary if you want the ability to install future OTA updates. But again, you were not specific as to your end goal.

I believe the SU app will still be present, but you can then just uninstall it.
Aside from that, not sure if any "traces" will still be present or not. If you want to be sure its fully stock, than RUU.
You say you don't want to return to full stock. But then you say you want it the way it was before you started any mods. That is the same as returning to stock.

root checker says its off, but i really dont wanna ruu lol to much work setting back up my phone, but if thats the only way to be sure o well.

If root checker says no root, and in bootloader is says Software Status is "official" than I probably wouldn't worry about it too much.

I was on stock Lollipop Dev Edition (but rooted) for a long time. Currently on SkyDragon Sense 7 v9.0.
Also, in addition to it saying "official" for software status, just restore stock recovery if you want OTA updates (as previously mentioned - but just wanted to clarify my last post). After that, you should be good to go.

You tried gpe 5.1 H6 yet, i saw some new camera files was included in the ota zip wonder if they improve it lol

Rooting questions (kinda newb again)

I have unlocked my bootloader, I have gone through the process of installing TWRP RC1, I have also installed SU 2.79 as guides have shown to do. I have also installed adaway after rooting, as well as titanium backup.
What is left to do now? I have read that if I stay on stock but rooted, when a security update comes out next month and I take it, my device turns into brickmode. I don't intend to stay on stock, I am taking the time to learn all the ins and outs of each rom that exists currently and trying to make a decision which one I like best, and especially what kind of challenging process exists for flashing the rom as well as putting TWRP back on then SU, and the confusing part about doing the vendor image. So yea, still learning. The last time I rooted and flashed anything was LGG3 days, so it's a learning curve again.
Am I supposed to be using a flash drive for anything? Or is that not needed if following the installation process for whatever rom is out there.

There is no need for a flash drive. You can easily disable OTA on stock, and there is no need for a custom rom. In fact, I am rooted on stock. Also, the OTA should not be able to go through while rooted but I have seen myself that it does work surprisingly. My guess is this is because of the dual partitions, but no, you will not get bricked if you accept an OTA. The worst that would happen is that you would lose root. I'm guessing this is due to the dual slots. The OTA overwrites the other slot and swaps it on reboot. You should be able to just get in again but without root.

And if it does fail you can download the full OTA from google and install it with TWRP or adb install it.
Turn off updates in dev options. A couple of people have gotten hit with big data bills from it downloading over and over.

I'm unlocked but not rooted. I installed Franko kernel but need to be rooted to use his app. I'm trying to figure out root yet stay stock for now.
