I was having issues with my phone about a month ago. I had rooted it using Unrevoked 3. I decided to go back to stock so I downloaded a PB31IMG.ZIP file a reloaded it, loaded the 2.2 updates and loaded the last update from Verizon. It was the third time I've had to do this so I decided to keep it stock. I noticed when I would go into recovery mode that it said "INCREDIBLE XC SHIP S-OFF" on the first line. Does this mean my phone's security level is set to S-OFF? If so, is there a way to change it on my unrooted phone? I downloaded the S-ON zip file from the Unrevoked site, renamed it update.zip and tried to install it but it would give me the E:failed to verify whole-file signature error each time. I want to get my phone back to S-ON just in case I have problems with it and I need to return it under warranty. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.
The security is independent of rooting, as you have discovered. Rooting is at the level of the ROM itself whereas the security is at the bootloader level.
The only way to turn security back ON is with S-ON tool. In order to do that you need a custom recovery (clockwork)..in order to install clockwork you need to root. So you did everything backwards.
You'll have to root, install clockwork (if you have stock recovery right now). Then run s-on, then LASTLY run an RUU.
The RUU will replace the bootloader, recovery AND ROM all back to stock. You can flash RUUs with S-ON because they are signed/official.

Hi- I had my phone rooted with s-off and stock 2.1 ROM with a few mods. I have managed to flash a stock 2.1 ROM that also put back stock recovery but it would not run unless I was s-off. Now how do I get s-on? The stock recovery would not accept it.
UnrEVOked Forever now supports going back to S-ON

Here is the link to the tool, just read up on that link if you are unsure of anything.

Yes I used the s-on tool. Now I am stuck at s-on with clock mod recovery. I need to get back to stock recovery but I can't get run a stock recovery update with s-on.
Just run the 2.1 RUU stock zip again.
I tried the 2.1 RUU It is an .exe and I was told I needed HTC sync to run it. I installed HTC sync and it would not run.
How do I run the "RUU_Incredible_C_Froyo_VERIZON_WWE_3.21.605.1_Radio_2.15.00.07.28_2k4k_NV_1.50_PRL58006_release_143351_signed.exe?
I installed htc sync, got it running, plugged in my phone, chose htc sync option, then tried to run the .exe
I'll try again now on another machine.
I can extract the stock recovery and other files out of the ruu.exe file but what do I do with it. In only need the boot loader. As I said I have stock ROM and s-on.
Damn. I titles this thread wrong. I have s-on and stock rom, I need stock recovery. I also need to get this done before I leave town. I'm going to post the question with a proper title for the thread. My apology and moderater please remove this thread.

Problem solved with the PB13img file provided with Diego Mejia's 2nd video. Worked perfectly. Did not even have to do all the adb pushing of sys files since I never put in the leaked OTA. His file version was just accepted by hboot. Awesome!
I need to return my evo for repair, but I have problems unrooting my phone. For some reason i cant run ruu, because it cant recognize my phone. I tried to run PC36IMG.zip , and I have S-OFF. But once I flash S-ON zip and then run PC36IMG.zip from bootloader, it scans the zip file but doesn't let me update. I noticed that when I go back to S-OFF I can flash the zip, but since I don't have access to recovery I can't flash back to S-ON. Any idea anyone?
Try re-rooting your phone, flashing S-OFF and then loading the image.
i have been having problems with my phone and tried updating it to the GB RUU. It still had problems so i sent in for a new one and i came in the mail today. The problem is that it is still S-off and i was wondering if it could be madse S-on while not rooted and if not is there a way to root it since it is S-off
To get s-on you would need a custom recovery installed and the stock froyo radio 2.15.00.07.28 then flash the s-on patch on the unrevoked site. Since your s-off all you need to do is flash clockwork recovery thru hboot as a PB31IMG.zip. Then flash the stock froyo radio also as a PB31IMG.zip. Then flash the s-on patch thru recovery. After that just run an ruu and your phone will be complete stock again. You can find all the files you need here http://pvillecomp.com/, except the s-on patch wich you can get on the unrevoked forever site here http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/forever .
I am stuck in Stock "Firmware Version 2.1-update 1" with Software Number 1.47.651.1 and even though I constantly check for OTA updates, the phone says that there are no updates for my phone.
Here is how I got here: I got my Evo 4G a few days after it came out. I was an early adopter of Unrevoked and Unrevoked Forever (S-Off). Things were great. Eventually, an OTA slipped by and forced my phone into a boot loop. I was able to use Clockwork to restore one of my backups and then avoid further OTA's.
I decided that I wanted to go stock, and get to the newest OTA. I used the RUU method to get my phone back to its stock rom. Then, the phone found two OTA updates. I thought that it probably had to update in several steps instead of jumping right to the latest update, so I just accepted the first two OTA's that it found. Unfortunately, the phone will not find any more updates and I am stuck with 2.1 (1.47.651.1).
I also noticed that when I boot into recovery, there is no "recovery" there. I see the word recovery, but when I select recovery it takes me to a red triangle with an exclamation point in the middle. I tried to download and install the 2.3.3 OTA Rom by renaming it to update.zip and putting it on my sd card, but I got some errors and it would not install.
I wonder if having S-Off has anything to do with the phone refusing to find the newest OTA updates? Or maybe I need a new radio? But if I reverted all the weay back to stock, wouldn't all of this been taken care of during the RUU method?
If anyone can help me get to the newest official version of Android, I would really appreciate it.
Thanks very much!
You need to install a recovery, I suggest amon-ra, then download a rom and flash it through recovery. Sounds like you just don't have a recovery installed
We're comin from a pure power source.
But am I unrooted now that I went back to stock with the RUU? If so, can I flash a recovery?
Thanks!
once u get to the little evo with the exclamation point, hit volume up and power at the same time. It takes u to a stock recovery. Or just flash a custom recovery as said above as a PC36IMG.zip flash a custom rom and viola! Or the other method u can do is take it to a sprint store and have THEM run the stock 2.2 RUU, get you to 2.3.3 and you should be able to update to the OFFICIAL AOS but of course as with anything stock, you run the risk of losing full root. But I doubt it because I just rooted a stock evo with the latest 4.54 OTA update just fine. hope this helps. Good luck with any way you choose to go.
Whether you are s-off or s-on doesn't matter to run the latest 4. 54 ruu. Download it and run it. U will then have latest software. Then if ur not s-off go to revolutionary.io and get s-off'ed

I will agree with this person. Sounds easier than my post lol google-foo will prove to be a useful tool young grasshoppa -_- (goooong) no racial slur intended ppl
Kay well I just unrooted my Evo 4g and flashed the unrevoked forever zip and flashed the pg update but Once I get to boot loader it still says s-off I need help to make it say s-on or whatever it is suppose to say
You have to flash the s-on tool <---
Then you want to run an RUU <--- from your PC. I would choose the 3.30 which was still froyo, which is rootable with unrevoked. This is an .exe file and is just double clicked, on your pc, while the phone is plugged into usb, it walks you through it.
You should now be s-on with no custom recovery. As long as they don't do the upgrade for you you will simply be able to re-root using unrevoked.
