[Q] what's the bare minumum you require for a phone? - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was wondering what would be the bare minimum software required to get a working android phone?
Since LG and VMWare have gotten virtualisation (VMWare Fusion) working on an android (2 different Android Phone OS's running side by side).
Would it be useful if you had, on your phone, a fully equip ROM like LeeDrOID or Cyanogen and a "very basic" ROM that just has Phone dialler & messaging capabilities (like a "dumb" phone) that you could swap over to, to save battery life?
Or is it a "Dumb" idea?

i think custom roms can save bettery life i can get 19hours max with heavy use
Im Using LeeDroid v1.2

Custom ROM "decay": WM6.5.x vs. Android

I'm not entirely new to Android, I just haven't had a dedicated android phone for more than 3 weeks.
Coming from WM6.5.x on a Touch Pro, even the best ROMs I've installed seem to deteriorate and act weird after a certain amount of time (2 weeks or so).
Has anyone experienced the same behavior with customs ROMs on Android? I'm wondering what the differences are between SIM unlocking a WM device and rooting an android device.
With an expensive device like the EVO, I'm wondering if it's worth rooting it.
Sorry I couldn't think of a better word than "decay" in the subject.
ROM "performance" fragments over time as you write data to the NAND. While not the same, the idea is synonymous with data fragmentation on a HDD. The point is that over time, performance will slow down some, and a "fresh load" of an OS, be it Android, Windows Mobile, Linux or Windows, will always perform better than a dated install.
That said, I've never experienced degradation other than some performance slow down--never had functionality/features break or otherwise behave erratically.
Case in point, my phone batteries now decharge quicker because my screen doesn't turn off after I get an email or something like that. This is the best it's been. Some other ROMs in the past have had weirder effects on the TP, but I can't seem to recollect exactly what they were. sorry. I think mainly they've been related to Manilla.
I can second the usage of WM 6.5 (custom rom) getting worse over time. Ive got one now Im limping along until the 4th. I use SBP Clone on mine s I can reload my ROM when it gets too bad and then use PIMBackup to restore my calls/txt/emails ECT but it still gets aggravating having to do that.
Im hoping for more and something better with Android.

That's good to hear, thanks for the feedback.
ya no problem here with different roms..you probably wont see a million different roms like you see on windows mobile

[Q] So which rom do I use?

First of all hello to the people of XDA Desire HD thread.
I'm in unfamiliar territory.
I used to own a Milestone and thanks to its "awesome" bootloader there were very few roms to chose from. After dropping and breaking it I had to buy a Huawei u8500 (due largely to monitory issues) and there were even fewer roms for that.
Well now I have gotten hold of a hand-me-down Desire HD
I managed to downgrade and root it breaking a lot of sweat as I'm very unfamiliar with HTC rooting and modding. The gingerbread it came with had WiFi issues. Very poor range.
Anyway, I lost my jaw on the floor seeing the huge number of Desire HD roms on XDA and I don't know which one to use. I do not want hop from rom to rom. I just want to flash one and use it day in day out. I know you guys hear this all the time but I wanted to hear from you on a personal note which one I should use.
My priorities are:
1. Has to be very very light on battery consumption. Huge screen, a processor from Ferrari, and just 1230mah is worrying me. I need to go through each day (that's 24 hours) without having to think about charging it. The rom has to be very light on standby.
2. I don't like the HTC phone apk...after a few days of use I feel like calling someone with the Desire HD is the most difficult thing to do with this phone. All the other stuff can be done seamlessly, just not calling someone . May be I'm not used to it yet.
3. I like the new Sense UI. A rom that comes with it and other HTC complementaries would be nice.
4. Performance would be nice but it is 4th on the wishlist as my history tells you i have never had a top-end phone. I consider the speed I see in the stock rom as blistering
So what do you think I should flash?
Ive used several roms and it's all down to personal preference - BUT I can highly recommend (in this order)
1) Leedroid HD (highly tweaked fast rom, excellent, visually diff than a stock rom, less battery drain then android hd below)
2) Android Revolution HD (highly tweaked fast rom, excellent, visually doesnt appear much diff than a stock rom)
3) MIUI 1.8 ( this very light in size and battery drain and seems to be becoming more and more popular, with alot of dev/skins/mods appearing by the day - This is what im playing with at the minute)
please remember - battery drain is mostly down to the apps/wifi ect usage

Wow...I was expecting CM7 stable would be mentioned...is the CM7 not very battery friendly?
I used CM7 [Nightly] for months - changing it almost every day with each release. I've tried many of them here at XDA as have many people here.
Check out my sig for a few screenshots and ideas.
Like dayze0 I'm currently using MIUI. MIUI 1.8.26 v.2: Freshly Squeezed Edition™ 27/08/11
Some screenshots I took of it are here.
I am intrigued by MDJ's ultimate...partly because it has a regular phone apk i think. How did it fair in the consumption department?
I tried it and it was good but it's now discontinued.
One of m-deejay's latest roms is Virtuous Doubleshot v1.0.1.
You should try all or any of them and learn that way.

[Q] To flash or not to flash?

That is the question.
On a regular tablet this is an easier decision to make (I have a custom ROM on my Asus TF101) as the differences between stock ROMs and custom ones are mainly to do with performance and removal of bloatware. With the Note series though, there are apps and services that are specificly designed for use with the spen.
I plan on being an heavy spen user. It is the main reason I want to get the tablet (that and the ideal screen size).
I was hoping to get the pros and cons about going for a more barebones ROM (once stable builds become available) vs the functionality added to the OS by touchwiz and some of Samsung's apps.
I dont think i'd be fused about losing multiwindow, airview, quick command. the screen is only small so there isnt much you can fit on half of it and i dont mind losing the other small benefits if it means i can have a leaner and faster ROM.
I could take or leave S planner. I'll most likely use the google calendar anyway.
I want a good note taking app though and my time with s note has made me a fan of it. i like the ability to copy an image from any screen and append it to a note. Is this function available in any of the custom roms or apps on the older Notes?
Other than note taking, i plan on using it as a sketch pad, inking and colouring tool and may be (if possible) try and start making some smallish comics with it.
I also like the IR remote and apps.
I guess my question is... is it better, from your experience, to try a barebones ROM and add the functionalities i'm after, or stick with the stock ROM and disable the functionalities im not interested in (hoping that I may see an increase in performance and battery life)?
I will probably root and overclock the CPU either way and if a kernal becomes available that improves performance I will probably end up flashing that as well (the overclocked GPU on my TF101 kernel has allowed me to install and play games that were previously unavailable. The difference between stock and what I run now is night and day but alot of that is probably the differences between ice cream sandwich and jelly bean).
Thanks
There are plenty of note taking apps out there. I know you will lose some of the spend functionality if you use an AOSP ROM, but you don't need to go to that extreme. You can run a deflated stock ROM and free up a ton of space, and probably save some battery life, while retaining all the features of a stock Note 8. Thats what I plan on doing, just like I did with my Note 2.

Breath new life?

Hi all,
This is my first time here and feel very humble amongst you all. I come here to gain knowledge on how to breath new life into my old Samsung Galaxy Nexus.
Questions:
1) Would I be wasting my time trying to make my old faithful better?
2) Is it possible to update the firmware to simulate newer versions of Android?
3) I would like to use Android Pay, can this be achieved?
4) I understand the phone's hardware is not compatible with 4G but can any improvements be made?
5) Could I carry out any form of modifications myself with help from you guys?
BTW, I have performed a factory reset last week and the internet feels slightly quicker for whatever reason!
I'm not too bothered if anything fails as I am thinking of buying a Nexus 5X anyway but would just like to see what differences could be done.
Many thanks and I look forward to any replies given.
Thank you.

Well, I'm not a developer either but I can tell from my experience that you can breathe new life into your GNex.
I did so in 2014 when I decided to install CM11. Everything worked just fine except for one problem I encountered in connection with the
Google apps I installed as well - there was about 4-5% battery drain/hour in stand-by which I was not willing to accept. So I decided to
scrap all google apps and after flashing CM 11 without goolge apps I was back to 1%/hour (or even less) during stand-by. Apps can be found on F-droid or aptoide.
I still use it as a daily driver because it serves my needs perfectly. At present I have CM12 nightlies running and they good for daily use.
Battery life is very good; camera issues (videos used to have a small green/purple line on one edge) are gone and overall performance and stability is very good.
However, I can not tell whether Android Pay works as I do not have G-apps installed and I guess that you will not be able to do anything regarding 4G.
There are special kernel-versions that allow a higher CPU-rate; at least they existed for CM11 /Android 4.4.
I found this link on a German linux blog:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-nexus/development/kernel-fancy-kernel-r50-t2115590
Anyway, you can still use it as a daily driver and spend the money for a new device for other purposes.

New Oneplus 3 - stay with Oxeygn or ROM to andriod "pure"?

Hi All,
I have just purchased a one plus 3 after my nexus died a slow death.
I have seen a couple of post and comments online saying that i should ROM the handset and install a copy of Android "pure"? Is this best way to get the most out of the phone or should i stick with Oxygen? I've never used a phone with Oxygen so i don’t know much about it.
Would installing a copy of "pure" have an effect on speed, battery, camera etc?
Thanks
Darren
The purest android experience, paradoxically, is now offered by OxigenOS.
Most of the rom you can find here, are generally heavy modded by various teams (cyano, omni, slim, paranoid ecc..).
Instead, OxigenOS is mostly stock android with some small, fair modifications that allow you to better enjoy the device.
Moreover, with a custom rom not derived from the stock rom (like OP3Lite), you're always gonna lose something in terms of camera performance.
So, my advice is to enjoy the stock rom for a couple of weeks...
There's always time for modding..
