So I am interested in replacing the stock 8GB SD card with a 32 GB model. I have a couple of questions regarding this.
1. Are there specific brand's (specs) I need to look out for when getting a 32GB card? i.e. Compatability issues?
2. I don't want to lose anything from my current setup so how should I format my new card and copy over all my data from the existing one?
Thanks!!
already bumped off the first page and no replies.
No one has any idea about this?
I think Q&A must be blackhole
I don't see why you couldn't just unmount, remove, copy the entire contents of the card, install the new one and your off running-
I'm pretty sure you need to format the SD card FAT-32, not sure what block size. I'm guessing your probably going to want a class 6 or greater, and you may want to look into partitioning it (Swap partition? linux type? for better performance?)(I'm kinda looking into that right now myself).
I could be wrong on all counts though. Let me know how you make out- good luck. wow some of the 32G cards are more than I paid for my phone!

(1) If you pay less than about $200 at this point there's a good bet it's a counterfeit card. Otherwise stick with recognizable brands - Kingston, Sandisk, Transcend...
(2) Format the new card in the phone before you copy any files to it then do as the other poster suggested (just copy your files across).
They cost a grip!
Just get a 16GB card for $40-45 for now, not worth spending 4-5x as much for 2x the capacity. Class 4 should be fine as well AFAIK ('specially if you're going for 16GB, C6/16GB can be tougher to find for a good price), C6 8GB cards are super cheap (<$20). The 8GB card that comes w/the phone is C2, FWIW.
I agree...I'd wait for the 32 to come down in price.
8G is plenty for me for now...

Where did u get the info that the card that came with it is class 2? Been trying to find that out but could not get the answer.
I just received my 16G (C6) card today from Transcend...and have to agree...gonna cost you a group to go 32G unless black market piece. Pay the extra dollars for branded hardware...this one cost around $68 and has some great specs.
This does bring up a question for me though...
I partitioned the card at 50/50 but got to thinking...why do I need 8G's for moving apps to the sdcard? Any thoughts from the group as to a good partition ratio?

Pull it out and look, it'll have a class 2 stamp on it.
So to throw another question out there, are there any critical folders I should back up? I'm getting a 16gb card ordered from frys.
I know for sure I'll want to back up pics and music, but I have a lot of nandroid backups and the such. I'm not using apps2sd so that's no real problem either.
I haven't had an Android phone before (coverted from an iphone 2g ) so any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!
Im not sure if u guys kno of this or not, but i got an email from ebay stating that people are selling fake sd cards, is that even possible?
people have always sold fake sd cards and usb drives
Thanks though! its always good to be aware!
..They are fake in the sense that they are not rated for what is advertised, i.e. less space is actually available, lower class ratings than advertised
i'm going to ask a stupid question how do you know the sd card is fake?
well, if its a 8GB card, formatted as fat32 it should be somewhere around 7.5 GB i think. If you got a fake one it would be substantially less.
As for the speed. Class 2=2MB/s class 6=6MB/s for the write speed. So take a 100MB file or so and transfer it to the sd card. you should get around your class speed. It may vary, even if you use an app to test the speed, but something suspicious would be always getting 2MB write speeds with a class 6 card
i bought a 32 gb card on ebay, wanna try to transfer all of my files from my current 8 gb card it won't go through .giving me some write disk error or something like that. It shows up as 32gb on my phone... but the files just wont transfer.. i mean some of them go tru, but others im gettin that error i stated earlier. did i do something wrong when i got the card? because i just put it in the phone and started to transfer ....
Thx 4 helpin
dont quote me on this, but I thought the only manufacture with a 32GB was san disk? that was a month ago so it probably has changed.
Heres my dumb question, did you format the card?
Yea i did. If by formatting ur reffeeing to placing the card in the phone, go to settings, then format. That is how u format, right?
yes.
do you still have a link to that auction or a similar item? what brand is it?
On the card it says microsd, hc, 32gb, then has a part number. Link to the auction is a bit difficult at the moment cuz im posting from my phone...
I just took a pic of it and attached it
I am going to go out on a limb here, but if it does not have a SanDisk anywhere, I am pretty sure they are the only manufactures of a 32GB micro sd card. I am also pretty sure they would put there name on it. That being said, I would say that you could possibly have a bum sdcard, but again I am only speculating.
Even if it is there are a few other things to try:
Try plugging the phone into a computer, choose hard drive mode and use a computer to format the card. (fat32)
Try to do a drive repair, or drive scan from the OS
You can also try some disk utilities that can be found just about all over the internet.
also, the files that wont go through (i did not read carefully at first ), ensure they are not larger than 4GB
http://www.sandisk.com/products/mobile-memory-products/sandisk-microsdhc
that is the sandisk 32GB sd card. Again, I am going on the assumption that they are the only ones that make this size card, so I could be proved wrong at any time!!!
I just looked at that pic, is that a 4 in the circle? I am almost sure they do not make a class 4 32GB sd card yet.
Everything you are sugessting i already did.. except get a drive software to scan the card. And no, the files were def not larger than 4gb per file, it was 5gb of data.. but not all in one file.
Thx for ur help, but from what we have discussed it would appeAr I have a bad card. Ill try to get u the linkto the auction if u want.
Thx 4 ur help.

thats a fake card.
It's only 2gb
In looking for that ebay link.. i found tnat the user that sold me that card is no longer registered.. that shouldanswer if its fake or not.
Do me a fav tho... do anebay searc for 32gb microsd card, and ull see a list of cards that are being sold, like mine, and people are buying them w/o complaints. Is it possible this other company also makes valid sd cards?
I actually didnt see that many listings for '32 GB micro sd card' maybe its the search term, only saw like 1 or two.
In all honesty though, I would save your self the trouble and get a legit 16GB card. You can get class 6 for like 60 bucks and class 2 or 4 for around 20 or 30... I think someone has mentioned that in this thread or another, I lose track easily Try newegg.com or something
and PS you should start your claim process through ebay or paypal now!!!
Yea. I guess ill have to do that and get a "legit" card...thx 4 ur help
remember i asked you to search ebay 4 a micro sd 32 gb...
I did the search and the same huge list of cards came up..
Take a look at
http://cgi.ebay.com/New-32GB-TF-Memory-Card-32G-Micro-SD-SDHC-MicroSDHC-TF_W0QQitemZ230496573491QQcategoryZ20336QQvarZQQcmdZViewItem
Thats one of the listings selling the card i have.. and again, people are butin without any complaints at all . the manufacturer of the card seems to HC.
See what im talkin bout?
yes, I see from the link. But that is a reasonable price 200.00
But, the HC stands for high capacity, not the manufacture
Especially because this is 190.00, you can get a SanDisk for 200.00 and that will work guaranteed. That's just my opinion of the matter.
Unless you absolutely need 32GB all in one package, I would highly suggest taking a look at something like these:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...ption=&Ntk=&CFG=&SpeTabStoreType=&srchInDesc=
here is where you can get a genuine 32GB Class 2 SanDisk:

ok so I am now about to be on my 3rd 32gb Lexar class 10 micro sdhc card. I am thinking that the first two since they were in the same shipment batch that they were just a bad bunch of cards. Just wanted to put the warning out there to you guys. My cards will just show up as corrupted and will not mount. Having to use a forensic software to pull all the non-backed up stuff off right now.
Anyone else having any problems with them?
I havent tried Lexar but I did buy a 32gig Class 10 Patriot and it has worked flawlessly so far
I have the lexar one and it works fine.
just warning you...37 days into this card and it failed....the first one lasted a little over 2 weeks.
back up, thats all I am saying
I got one coming... i'll see how it goes

Thx. I decided to try the Patriot version instead (not that it has any better reviews, but a few Atrix owners have reported success with it). Cheers.
Been running lexar since first week had the phone, no problems yet. What batch yours come out of? Also, ordered from provantage, shipped from new jersey or georgia one, will have to double check.
couldnt tell ya. I do know it was the very first shipment of them that came into our store like a week or two after CES. Im just thinking it was just a bad first batch. 3rd one is going fine so far...
I got mine through Beach Audio via Amazon. It's been working fine so far.
I got my Lexar class 10 a few weeks before the Atrix, it has been in the phone since the first boot and has worked great.
There is a known issue with micro sdhc cards with the atrix. Just like with the windows phone. Motorola is supposed to be coming out with an update to fix the issue.

What kind of prices are you guys finding on these SD cards? It seems silly to me to buy a single 32gb card for $100~ when you can get 3-4 16gb cards for the same price.

please offer even a shred of proof regarding your statements....
I know many people with Atrix and SD cards and NO issues.
Link to anything that mentions this known issue - this is nothing like Windows 7 -where the SD card slot was blocked at release.

The highest capacity model of any data storage device always has a higher per unit of storage cost than lesser models... but it also holds the most. You've got to pay to play.
If you wanted to have access to 32 gb of data, you wouldn't want to be swapping out two 16 gb cards as needed to get that capacity would you? To me, that seems silly.

And I understand that. For me personally, taking 15 seconds to swap an SD card isn't really a big deal, especially since with this phone (thank science), the card slot is easily available under the battery cover, instead of the battery itself.
But, if I can get a decent price on a 32gb card I'm all for it. The price difference just doesn't seem worth it (to me) to save the 15 seconds
If you want to carry all 32gb with you, where di you put the extra 16gb card? It gets old remembering to put accessories in your pocket.

Anyone else getting VERY SLOW transfers speeds with this card? Average I'm getting is 3.5mb/sec which is well below normal!! Therefore, it takes awhile to transfer a movie from my PC.

Like I said, it's really all about personal preferrence. I carry a shoulder bag around with me everywhere I go, so remembering accessories isn't really an issue. I always have my Lapdock, charger, bluetooth mouse, etc. with me at all times. This phone replaced any need I had for a netbook.
Still no word on prices people have got for these?

None, they're all expensive... Ball park numbers 100 bucks, save yourself money, buy a wintec 16gb for 29 dollars...best thing I ever bought, class 10 and if it goes bad or comes bad, you exchange with the given warranty, you can't lose out...fortunately my first ones been great for 4 months now
Microcenter has a patriot lx class 10 high speed micro sdhc for 69.99. I can't post a link because I don't have enough posts yet , but pretty easy to find at their site.

Check ebay.. I just purchased a 32gb Class2 from there for 40$. That was including shipping. It was brand new in box never been used. Seller reported he opened and formatted for his and buyers protection. Been using for a week and its reacts better then the original 8gb card that came with my evo.. So.. I mean you just really gotta look around..
FYI, its a cell phone you really dont need a HIGH class for it. Your not going to NEED mass data movement speeds.

Really? If all you needed was a "phone" then why don't you have a flip phone? The faster cards will come in handy when using apps you've stored on the card. If you decide to do that in the future.

Ive owned many phones. And the phone and card does what i need ty.. And i know how to look at a sellers rating on what to buy..
FTY forum rules pretty much say live and let live.. If you dont got nothing nice to say then dont say anything at all.. I was putting positive information towards the discussion. Id appreciate in the future if some people would have some common sense before posting.
Hi friends,
I want to buy a 32gb micro sd card but didn't decide to its class. As you know most of our sd cards have class 4 speed but i wonder if class 10 speeds up my desire z. I think i will move all my apps to sd. Would you buy class 10 and pay more or class 4 and pay less?
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secure_Digital#Speeds
So no, in our case, there won't be a difference between using a Class 10 vs a Class 4. It would be in your best interest if you got a 32GB Class 4 and save the cash then get a Class 10 and not use the speeds you paid for.
So which brand is the best for us? I don't want to pay more. I have searched eBay and found no brand oem cards which are cheap...

Most electronic components are all made by several manufacturers. Companies buy from them and brand it as their own. Example: all consumer graphic cards for computers are either of nVidia or AMD/ATI. When you go shopping for one, however, there is Zotac, EVGA, Sapphire, BFG, Asus, etc.. but they're all just rebrands of the original.
My point being is that there is no such thing as 'best brand'. Sure some brands give you better warranty/service, but how much warranty/service are you going to need on a SD card? Just find the cheapest 32GB one you can find and take it.

DO NOT waste your time buying a Micro-SD card from eBay. Many of them are counterfeits, and you unfortunately have no way of telling the legit ones from the frauds. The counterfeits are skillfully mislabeled to depict higher Class and GB capacity then they actually are capable of, and will even report the "wrong" GB capacity on your phone or PC. For instance, a 2 GB card will be misrepresented as 32 GB, and even say on your phone and PC that its 32 GB. But when you actually try to move files, it will be okay until the 2 GB is used up, then you will get an error.
If you look around the Accessories subforum, you will find several posts by different folks who have been ripped off this way. Stick to legit vendors. Not sure who you have available in your area. But Newegg is reliable, does not sell counterfeit goods, and have excellent customer service if a return is needed for some reason.

Your video card example is not correct. While Nvidia supplies the GPU chipset and has a reference design for the card, the manufacturers you mention almost always diverge from the reference design, and come up with their own card layout, cooling solutions, and do the remainder of the manufacturing.
And while SD memory is probably only actually manufactured by a finite number of several companies, it doesn't mean that they are all the same quality. I've used at least 3 different cards from Sandisk, with no issues, and many other Sandisk buyers will tell you the same. If you read posts from people with SD issues, its almost always from the lesser known, cheaper brands (or counterfeits bought on eBay, as I mentioned in my post above). My recommendation is Sandisk.
You can try for cheaper brand to save a few bucks, and you will probably be fine. But the difference in cost is not significant to me, compared to the potential hassle of losing my data and having to exchange SD cards due to problems. Better to spend a little more, and never have to worry about such things.
