[q] not sure to how to unroot using unrevoked3 - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just curious on how to unroot my evo after rooting w/ unrevoked3. The S-On shows in the reboot mode, im not even sure that i downloaded the (2) required downloads. i tried to download the PC36IMG and its saying that its not valid. i have no idea what im doing, i tried to install the new update 3.7 and my phone showed the android, w/ a triangle w/ a yellow exclamation point in the center....i had to take the battery out because it just froze up. i really want this phone back to the way it was when i bought it, im not good at things like this, im desperate for some help. i just want to go to sprint and see if maybe there might be someone to help me but im afraid to go that far just yet... another thing, there is this that shows up on my sd card:

Since you mentioned your phone shows S-ON, all you could do is place the PC36IMG on the root of the SD and then boot in the bootloader. Power + Vol Down and then apply the update. Try to relax and take time to read thoroughly. As long as you can boot into your bootloader, your phone should still work.

i hope this works...like i said im not good at this, and if this helps i will thank you alot.....

yeah, that didnt do anything but show me a bunch of blank pages where nothing would load and one link actually opened and it was all in a foreign language, anymore ideas??

am i supposed to upload the rapidshare file?? and if im supposed to what are the next steps in regards to unrooting my phone. i need step by step instructions if you will please, i cant afford to ruin my phone...

Can you log onto Gtalk? I will send PM you my screen name.
Just sent you a PM. Check it out.

the pc36img.zip is invalid.....i wonder why?? how can i download the pc36img w it being fully functional, and if that worked i dont understand where this root is on my sd card, ive searched high and low and come up empty handed.....is root a folder or sub folder, if so i cant find it, i didnt mention this before but i attempted to root my phone using unrevoked3 and the 1st attempt failed and then i got excited, i think i extracted the 2 necessary files they asked me to and so the i tried to root the second time and it said it was a triumph.....and then magically my phone was rooted.....please dont give up on me.

dont get mad at me, but what is G talk?? i have a gmail account is that kind of related?? im at work im about to be off, i can be available in like 30 min to be free from everything if you still want to help me...

Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
You need the 0.76.2000 bootloader. You can find a thread on how to change from your current booloader to 76 in the dev section. Running the .zip found in that thread will likely leave you in bootloops/fastboot, so have your rom on the root of your SD. Reflashing your rom fixes it.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
So I have to change the bootloader, is there a thread for that? And do you mean move that.zip update just to the main folder of my sd card?
Thanks for the help, learning as I go....

So I found a few of the threads guess I just don't understand how to run the zip file from recovery or is there another app I need?

Help Possible Brick - Unable to install recovery or launch Android (No shell)

I am running a new EVO which came with the new update and HBOOT 2.02.
I was able to get S-OFF
I am able to get into the bootloader and fastboot but that is all. I cant boot into the android OS I have not installed a custom recovery image because I get the following error when running adb shell
- exec '/system/bin/sh' failed: No such file or directory (2) -

Im really stuck here and without shell I cant think of anything I can do to fix this. I have even tried running the RUU software in windows.
Best thing to do is make a video, upload and post the link so we can see what you are talking about. It's hard to picture the issue without visuals.
What was the result when trying to run the RUU? If you can get the phone into Fastboot the RUU should work. That, of course, will bring you back to stock at which point you can start over.
That said, since you are at S-OFF did you try to putting a PC3IMG.zip on your sdcard and letting it run? Depending on the root method you used, there are a few floating around here but certainly worth a shot.
Do a search for toastch's How to Root the EVO Part 2 and try that one. The worst that could happen is you'd get a "Main Version Older" error and have to try another or take a different approach.
if u have s-off go ahead and flash the eng bootloader. then fastboot amon recovery.once there wipe and flash a custom rom.
everybody listen to toast. He is the rooting master. I tried everything, then turned to his tutorials and past comments, and instantly found my answers. Thanks for helping me finally root my insurance/refurb evo.

Thanks everyone for all your help, I will do the above suggestions and let you know. If anyone has any other ideas then post it and I will try it as soon as I get to work.
thx guys, I really appreciate it..
Update - I got to work and ghosted a desktop, to get a clean start and was able to run RUU in fastboot. Now that I have a new start with S-Off, I will follow toasts guide and let you guys know.
thx again for the fast response.
Ok I ran RUU 3.29 to get a clean start. Then followed toasts guide and after PC36IMG.zip is installed via bootloader there is an error "partition update fail."
I reboot and it hangs on the HTC screen, I waited about 15 minutes then had to pull the battery. I then had to run fastboot and RUU just to make the phone usable again.
Any clues

I wonder if there is a slight difference in hardware to other 2.02.0000 builds. I'm willing to try anything so let me know if anyone has an Idea.
Thx again guys
A shot from left field. Rename the PC36IMG.zip but do not delete it.
Keeping the original renamed PC36IMG.zip as a place holder, load a new PC36IMG.zip onto the sdcard. See if the error is reproducible.
If the error is gone or moves then the problem is the sdcard.
Yeah I tried that. I pulled a PC36IMG.zip from a few other tutorials and it didnt work.
But I just now ran unrevoked on RUU 3.30 and it was finally able to install a recovery, now let me see if the Roms work. Be back later.
Edit:
This is odd...
After I installing clockworkmod via unrevoked I was able to get back into the OS.
So I decided to do a nandroid backup via clockworkmod. After doing the backup I clicked "reboot system now" and the phone goes to the white HTC screen then boots back into the recovery image. I Pulled battery and reinserted it but it continues to loop back to the recovery image.
When I tried to do a nadroid restore I got the followign error.
Error while flashing the boot image.
Now Im going to try doing RUU again and redo unrevoked. But if it doesnt work does work does anyone else have any ideas? Has anyone seen this before?
Thx again
man i hope it works... Im biting my nails for you..
man i think i get it! you have bootloader 2.02, which isn't allowing you to switch bootloaders, causing a fail. try running sprint lovers newest (in pc36img.zip format) and see if you get better results. good luck.
I have modded many android phones since the G1, but this one goes against most of the common knowledge that I have read on here.
I flashed to RUU 3.30 again
Then ran unrevoked again.
At the end of the procedure unrevoked came back error free but clockworkmod told a different story. (I will include the log in my next post.)
I rebooted and still had access to my ROM i downloaded a terminal APP from the market place to check for root. Lowe and behold I am greeted with #.
So I rebooted to the recovery menu to do a nadroid backup.
After the backup was done I was stuck with the phone looping from white HTC screen to the recover menu.
I am now going to try all of the above steps again, but this time I wont do a nandroid backup, instead I will attempt to install amonra recovery image.
I have gotten 3 messages from people having the same issue as me getting out of S-ON then getting the recovery installed. It is a little odd
I will reply after my current test

man i think i get it! you have bootloader 2.02, which isn't allowing you to switch bootloaders, causing a fail. try running sprint lovers newest (in pc36img.zip format) and see if you get better results. good luck.

Will try that now.
I'm stuck in almost the same spot. I wasn't successful in getting the s-off...so I'm still in S-ON mode...but the pc36img.zip install failed. Now I have no installed rom, and I get a red triangle with the exclamation mark. Can anyone help me out with an option to recover? Hope I'm not thread jacking...just trying to get moving, and my search of the forums hasn't born any fruit....
O.K. n/m had the answer all along, just had a "blonde moment"...sorry.
When I pushed the sprint lovers newest pc36img.zip I was able to boot into the OS, but when I tried the nandroid backup. It created the same loop issue as before.
Ok so I was at pretty much the same spot and when I re-flashed the PC36img.zip my phone rebooted (kind of), when it turned off it never came back on. It will not turn on at all. The computer will not recognize it and the light does not come on when I try to charge. I was rooted running Myn's and was running perfect. One day it went to the white HTC screen and would go no further. Any ideas? It seems to have no power at all.
You need to use this it will get you going: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829045
Hboot 2.02 is a whole new animal. The traditional root methods are obsolete.
Ok try this flash Sprint lovers the install Rom manager and download amon RA Recovery and flash through Rom manager. MAKE SURE IT IS THE UPDATED AMON RA FOR HBOOT 2.02 and let us know of that worked

thanks..
Are you using the most recent version if CWM? If so, then yes, perhaps flashing RA via rom manager would help you.

It means to check your log file lol.
Issues that can cause that error though are a battery under 50%, no space on SD card, or USB cable plugged into phone while attempting to restore/backup.
ok ill charge it, make space, and unplug phone and let you know!
this is what it gives me

Sorry for wrong section again but thanks if you can help..
So you no I'm on RA
did you try formatting the SD card? What about using a lower version of RA?
Well that version I used worked before.. nd no I havnt formatted it.. can that make a diff??
Do you have more than 500 megs of space on your sd card?
Yea I have 1.58 gb free
Did anyone bother to actually look at the log????
Code:
Dump of the misc partition suppressed.
.mtd: MEMGETBADBLOCK returned 1 at 0x002a0000 (errno=0)
You have a bad block present which is causing the backup to fail. What to do? Not sure.
First off, what options are you selecting when you perform the backup? Looking at the list of option here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=482096&d=1294329601 - I don't even see an entry to misc, unless misc is something that gets backed up when sd-ext or .android secure is selected. Are you selecting either of those? If you are, is there actually a sd-ext partition present, and/or are you making use of the .android secure folder?
Normally, the misc partition is not touched during a backup or restore.
Edit: Never mind, the line in your log - /sdcard/nandroid/HT06SHL10661/BCDEARS-20110112-0011, tell me what you're backing up, and it would appear you have everything checked.
All you really need is Boot, system, data, and wimax if you haven't saved that before.
I’m having a similar issue but my backup hangs while making the boot.img file. It never completes, just keeps making the file larger and larger (over a gb). I tried formatting the card and even using a different card. I’ve used clockword recovery and amon ra, nothing works.
I could really use some help here. I'm afraid to do anything without being able to do a nand! Thanks in advance
log file??
The nandroid process never actually stops so I have to manually reboot the phone. Once I do that I can’t find where the log file is stored. I tried /cache/recovery but it’s empty. I also did a search in root explorer, nothing. If I go back to recovery and move to SD card it’s a log of the new session and not the failed one.
You need to do it while it's actually backing up. Connect to usb and use adb to copy it to the sd or just PULL it to your current folder on the pc.
Got it. I’ve not used adb before but I’ll install it on my home PC and post later tonight. Thank you so much!
Read the first post here, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=705026 , he's got step by step instructions on obtaining the log (under important notes).
I got the logwhile it was doing the nandroid. This was after about 10 minutes or so and the folder grew to almost 2GB. I'm not sure why the time and date are in the future:

The time is in GMT time. What's strange is the log doesn't even show the initiation of the backup process..
What options did you select to actually backup?
Boot, system and data.I got a successful wimax backup separately. The files that are made in the nandroid folder are boot.img, data.img and system.img. The data is the one that gets really big.
I'm not sure why it's acting up. You may want to post in this thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=705026 - the author may be able to help. Make sure you include both log files, and what you were doing when they were created. The more detail supplied, the more likely you'll get a response and/or fix.
Will do. thank you for your help

Now, if I power off the phone, then power on, I see the White HTC splash screen then it immediately goes to the bootloader..
it looks like you never made a backup with amon-ra. did you backup with clockworkmod? bcuz they aren't compatible. i think you at least need to move folders around. baisically, if you made a backup in cwm, restore in cwm. same goes for amon-ra.
Its saying it cant find the backup. But, why would it then bork everything else from loading?

I have only made backups via Amon RA.
I made a backup of my Sense ROM then renamed the "top" folder, so I could tell which was Sense and which was AOSP. But, I figure that wouldnt effect anything.
I didnt touch anything within that main folder.
no idea. but did you make the sprintlover's backup with cwm? if you did, just flash to cwm and restore
Could I just flash a new ROM? I have one on my SD card still.

All backups were made with Amon. Amon is the only recovery that has been on my phone.

Turn off your device, remove the SD card for a few seconds and then reinsert it. Afterwards, reboot into recovery and try to nandroid restore again. If that does not work, reflash amon RA.

Yes, you could, but let's make sure your recovery is okay and see if we can get that nandroid restore going. Still, it is your device so if you want to flash a new rom, go for it.

It is possible. It happened to me once and all I did was remove my SD card, reinserted it and booted into recovery and all was well. I wasn't using v2.3 when it happened. At least, I don't recall using it.

Do me a favor if you have the time, boot up to your homescreen and using a file manager, go into your nandroid folder and rename the nandroid you're trying to restore. Make sure there is no spaces or special characters. For instance, rename adbc-20110404-1234 to something like MynsRLS5. Afterwards, go back into recovery and try to restore the nandroid backup you just renamed. If that fails, assume your backup is corrupted and simply flash a new rom like you wanted to do in one of your previous replies. Also, I would reflash amon RA to be on the safe side as stated by dkdude36.

i dont think he can boot. maybe flash a rom, boot, see if nandroid is there, and then figure out what to do.
I can access all the files on my desktop via the USB-MS feature. I will rename a folder.

So this is the naming scheme I have...
Folder: Restore
Subfolder: BDARS-20110403-0429
Within the subfolder is a "Android Secure" ZIP, plus boot, data, recovery, wimax, system, nandroid md.5
They are IMG and MD5 files
Retrying restore did not work.
Was wiping cache, dalvik, data then running Calk's format all prior to running the Nand restore a bad idea?
