[Q] Desire Z - The linked contacts don't show up when trying to add to groups - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I think the title says it all.
I have all my Outlook contacts synced with the phone (so they are phone contacts). Some of the phone contacts are also linked with Facebook for HTC Sense, some with Peep, and some with both. I only chose to show the Phone contacts in the People app, so the contacts from Peep or Facebook that are not also in Phone/Outlook won't show up. This is ok and I have all the contacts I need in People/All Contacts.
The trouble starts when I want to add contacts to groups. I can only choose from contacts that are not linked with Facebook/Peep. Those "Phone" contacts that have Facebook accounts won't show up. Of course, I can manually go to each contact, edit them and add them to groups. But it'll take a long time and I'm too lazy to do that.
Any idea why they don't show up when I try to add them from groups? Is it a bug?

This has been fixed in the last system update.

All People - not showing ALL people

By default, all of my gmail contacts synced to the phone were under the "Friends" category and all showed up under the ALL category.
However, the moment I change the category on a contact, it no longer shows up under ALL. Consequently, if I change the contact to be under no category, the contact disappears altogether.
Is this a bug ? If so, any workaround ?
Hmm, some more info.
Went into gmail, and all of the contacts missing from ALL were no longer in the "My Contacts" group. Now this group cannot be added to manually, but simply adding a contact to another group automatically adds it to this group also.
So the workaround for me was to add all of the missing contacts to a new group (made up) and then immediately remove them again. Sync this to the phone, and they now show up correctly in ALL.
Sounds like a bug with changes on the phone removing the contact from the "My Contacts" group. Anywhere this can be raised as a bug to have fixed ?
I'm having all sorts of issues with contacts. For one the people app refuses to remember the settings to also show facebook contacts. Because for some reason they think some of my contacts are in fact facebook contacts and they don't show up anymore under gmail.
Really seems like a total mess to me : (
Guess it will take some time to figure out what is what with all the linking and things going on.
You are not alone by any means. Both my mate and I are are having similar problems.
You are right that all contacts get download to the phone correctly and show up under "All" as you'd expect but when you add them to another group, i.e. Friends, they do get added to the group but disappear from "All". Remove them from the group and they disappear altogether. However, they are still on the phone as you can find them through the "Search People" app.
I went online to my Google contacts, at contacts.google.com, and found these contacts had been removed from the "My Contacts" folder but appeared instead in "All Contacts". I moved them back to "My Contacts" and they reappeared on my phone.
Surely if you add a contact to a group it should still appear under "All" contacts as well as the group it's been added to?
Workaround??
Been looking into this a bit more....
It seems that you can add contacts to the default groups on the phone but they will be removed from the "All" contacts list [BUG??!! - I'm sure my wife's Hero doesn't do this]. To get them back, and appear in both the group/s and the "All" list, you have to:
1. Login to Google Contacts Manager, www.google.com/contacts.
2. Remove these contacts from My Contacts. They will go to All Contacts.
3. Sync the contacts on the phone.
4. In Google Contacts Manager, move the contacts back to My Contacts.
5. Re-sync the contacts on the phone.
...a real PITA but it just worked for me.
Alternatively, you can control the Groups directly online in the Google Contacts Manager however this only works for new groups or groups that co-exist by default. Some groups on the phone do not directly correspond with those in the Manager and vice versa so if you add a new group to the Manager of a name that already exists on the phone you'll get a duplicate group on the phone.
The kicker is that if you create your own groups on the phone or in the Contacts Manager then everything works without a hitch.

whats the best way to manage contacts?

Hi folks,
couple of questions around contacts.. both my wife and i now have the desire.. she just couldnt keep her hands off mine so i bought her one over the weekend..
She's keen to have her contacts in one place, set up calendar events for birthday etc.. Is that best done in gmail and then sync with the phone?
Also why can i see my facebook picture in messages (and can i get rid of it?) but i cant see my wifes when i get a message from her?
How do you get the contacts from the phone book into gmail?
Cheers,
Mick
It took me a while to figure out that there are 3 types of contacts
- phone
- google contacts
- facebook
Your phone contacts do not synchronize by default.
Google contacts are synchronized with your Gmail contacts (both ways).
Facebook contacts don't need an explanation
You can create all 3 types for one person and then link them (although you may experience some inconsistencies) so you will have one entry per person.
I myself have all the contacts saved as google contacts and I can manage them either in Desire or via my Gmail account.
so if you have phone contacts.. can you export them to google contacts?

Yes, you can. I exported my Phone contacts to the SDcard and imported them to my Gmail account.
Thanks - and in gmail then can you set up birthdays etc.. and the phone will then pop up reminders?
cheers for your help

Yes, you can manage your contacts via Gmail and sync them to your phone.
And about the birthday reminders - they do pop up (sort of).
I don't find the birthday notifications good enough. The phone reminds you 7 days in advance (which is too soon in my opinion) and only by showing you a little green sign in your phonebook. No sound, no vibration... nada.
I ended up creating an appointment for all my main contacts (using Google calendar, so it wasn't that big of a deal) so I would not forget them.
cheers - it would be nice alright if it would give you a pop up for appointments.. i guess the calendar is the way to go.. with gmail - can you set up appointments there.. and sync them with your phone? or do you use the phones calendar to set up appointments?
thanks,
mick
The synchronization works both ways. You can add/remove appointments on your Desire and they will be added/removed to your Google calendar (and vice versa).
EDIT: Desire can also show all your shared calendars as well (with corresponding colours). For example my wife shares her calendar with me (so I don't have to ask for the millionth time when some of her appointments are due) and I can see her entries marked in a different colour in my Desire's calendar.
The calendar sharing must be done from Google Calendar itself.
As for the notifications... I was trying to find an application which would extract birthdays from your contacts and either set them as appointments automatically or manage the reminders from the app. Unfortunately I was not able to find a working one.
My Favorite is using Google Contact method. So our contact will auto Sync with Google.. this is seamless backup solutions for me
Just bought my Desire
I wanted to start out clean, so I wiped out my Google contacts and calender.
Now I'd like to pull all of my FB friends to the phone and to Google Contacts, including birthdays into calender.
I've set up the sync to FB, and when going to People -> Online Directories -> FB I can see all of my FB friends, and can even call which ever of them has a phone number available on he's details, but for every contact who's details I want to see, the phone has to connect to the internet to retrieve that information, meaning it's not stored locally on the phone. Also, there are no contacts at People -> All.
Also, birthdays now appear on the phone's calender, but after syncing the phone calender with Google calender, I don't see any of that on there, meaning it doesn't sync ...
Another glitch is that although birthdays now all appear on the phone's calender, events which I have marked as attending on FB don't appear at all on the phone's calender.
Basically what I'd like is to copy all of my FB friends to my phone's memory as well as to Google contacts, and keep them linked and auto-synced.
Also to have all the birthdays that I already have on my phone's calender appear on my Google calender automatically, as well as FB events.
Is that too much to ask? :-X
Help would be much appreaciated...
So no ideas how to get it done... ?
Solution for birthday notifications
Go to a contact (any contact) and then go to the events tab (with the circle arrows). Press menu, go into settings, and there is your holy grail.
How does that help ... ? :-X

Facebook and sycning single contact?

What i mainly want is the facebook pic to show up for certain contacts in my phone. When i sync facebook, it starts syncing all contacts from facebook into my phone and putting them into my phonebook which i don't want.
Is there a way to just choose specific contacts in my phone and sync only those to facebook rather than FB syncing every single contact?
I haven't seen anything that will let you select a group of contacts to sync, but there is an option in the app "Sync with existing contacts: Sync data only about friends already in Contacts."
Hope that helps.

[Q] Sync Facebook details with Contacts in Oxygen 2.0 RC7?

Well? I have synced all my contacts through my account, I didn't use Titanium backup. Is there a way to sync things like Photos, birthdays into the calendar and such? I see that the facebook app does allow it but it doesn't work
You can sync your Facebook contacts with your phone contacts. If they don't link, just go into the phone contact and press Menu > Join and select the right one. You can do it manually by filling all the info out of the phone contact.
Cheers dude i just tried that and although slow as hell, i put all the main contacts i wanted to sync in Favorites and did it that way...thanks again

problems in HTC facebook sense

I have a problem on the photo sync with the facebook. Some contacts are automatically sync with the facebook once I have login thro the facebook apps and the HTC sense friendstrem. In the sms apps (original one), the photos of the contacts are linked, but many of them are missed even I have sync with fb. I need to manually solve it by editing the contacts are save it, then the photos with come out. However, may be 1 or 2days later, the photos are missed again, I need to manually do it again. May I know how to solve it? Is it my problem only? thx!!
Set facebook in settings to "sync all contacts." Then go to the settings of your phone>accounts & sync>and add account for facebook. Now sync contacts. When the name the contact in the phone does not "fit" to the name of this contact in facebook, you have to join them yourself:
Choose the corresponding accout>menu>edit contact>menu>join. Now choose the corresponding contact in facebook.
So i do it and all works fine.
Hope this could help you.
