weird memory card problem - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i just got a kingston micro sd 8gb class 4 card
previously i ran a 2gb unbranded card and it worked fun.
ever since ive started using the new card, the phone is hanging and it gives i/o errors in windows. its file systems are also corrupted sometimes. ive used all roms on it from miui to leedroid to rcmixhd, everywhere there is the same response
and with the 2gb card it works flawlessly
i checked the card with hd tune pro and it looks fine in the test
let me know how can i check the integrity of the card

Run a checkdisk with repair option.
Another way is to backup all the data from it and then run a full (not quick) format.
Also install h2testw and test it with it.

2GB card in my exec not working?

hi, new to the forum! i have just bought a sans disk 2GB card but im having trouble using it. i tried it in a friends card reader and managed to put a couple of mp3 albums on but then it makes the system freeze up until you take the card out, i have formated it and tried again but the same happens, similarly when i put it in my exec the phone works fine and can see the mp3s but when i try and load one it freezes. iv been looking for the answer to the problem and found some info on 2gb cards in hp's something about this fat/fat32 thing, is this the problem iv got and could someone enlighten me? also will i be able to format the card or whatever while it is in the exec and synced with pc as i do not have another card reader, although my friend has a pc one if i have to do it that way...
many thanks in advance.
Check your OS
This thing happens only when
you have initial ROM (update it wth latest ROM)
Card is not formatted on the same media (format it on your universal)
Card media is + technology which is not compatible with your mobile. (try to change it to SD instead of MMC)
I hope above may help you
sorry if im being dumb but how do i format the card on my universal?
simply format it in windows... I got a 2gb high speed card from samsung and I am using it without any problem without formating it even once
it could also be that the card is incompatible or your universal is faulty. try another card and that same card in some other device
the card iv got is a sandisk one, i read that it was compatible with the xda II so presumed it would be fine with the exec?
I think it's broken.
I had a 2GB from Transcend, and it had the same symptoms.
I returned it for RMA, because I read that someone else ad the 4GB version was working perfectely.
Before you do return it, buy another card reader. I had 1gb cards that corrupted seemingly, except a newer SD reader formatted them fine and they have been fine ever since.
Not all readers can handle the big sizes.

SD card corrupting

I'm currently using an 8gb Transcend card in my Desire, and a few days ago it suddenly wouldn't mount, either in the phone or when phone was connected to the computer. The ext partition was fine, most of my apps ran ok still (except for some of the games which store some data on the fat partition).
I removed the card from the phone and put it in a card reader and ran a disk check on it using Windows XP, and this seemed to sort the fat partition out mostly (some data/music/photos have disappeared).
My question is this - how can I tell if my card is to blame? It is a couple of years old, and was previously in my old Dream where it did get a hammering due to use with a swap partition. I can buy a new card, but I want to be sure that this will definitely solve my problems. Is there a way to check the old card for damaged/worn sectors?

Issues with a bigger SD Card

I bought a Transcend 16Gb Class 6 sd card for my desire.
Because the phone is rooted and running A2SD+ i partitioned is using Gparted: 1st partition 15GB FAT32; second 1GB EXT3 - no swap.
Used this in my phone. All was fine for a while. Then i started having apps disappear on me. When i tried to re-install the apps the phone would just reboot.
Proceeded to go back the stock 4GB card, no issues.
So i believe its an SD Card problem. However in my pc, i dont have any issue reading this card.
Anybody else experience similar?
Should i get a replacement card?
Anything i might be doing wrong?

The reason it reboot is that part of the app is still stored on internal memory so when you try to reinstall it it will reboot as it cannot install part of an app.
You don't need a replacement card all you need to do is restore a nandroid backup which then adds the data from the SD-ext partition to the new card and then it should work if you haven't got a backup you will have to re flash the Rom and reinstall all the apps via the market or with titanium or my backup
Hope this helps
Sent from my HTC Desire
I have done a full nandroid backup and restore from the working 4GB card to the 16GB. Did this a few time over as I experimented with different EXT3 partition sizes, thinking that a 1GB partition might have been too large.
I didn't have the reboot issue, but apps would lock up, and in some instances the phone would say the SD card is read only.
downloaded an ran a program to test the card (http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/System-Miscellaneous/H2testw.shtml). It came up with no errors.
Any other checks i can run?
My 4Gb card works flawlessly, but the 16gb has so many issues. Really confused.
Example: When viewing pictures, in the gallery (nexus gallery) the pics take a long time to load on the 16Gb, no issue on the 4GB.The force closes. The apps disappearing, and then phone rebooting when reinstalling.

SD Card Issues

I have been having problems switching from a 4gb sd card to a 32gb sd card in my htc one v. The 4 gig runs perfectly fine in my phone but I need more space so I switched to the 32gb card.
The problem I am having is almost instantly after putting in the 32gb card my phone starts lagging on just about everything. Load times take longer, the phone has more graphical glitches etc. I tried formatting the card to nfts and running paragon software to use that file type. Still no hope. I also partitioned the card to 16gb and free space for the other half and still no luck really. Though I did see some improvement.
Is it just that I got a bad sd card? Note that it works with my laptop and also in my pc perfectly fine, the phone just seems to not like the card or larger file size. Has anyone else gotten a 32gb sd card to work in their htc one v?
Thanks
Derek
Yes my 32 gb transcend class 4 works perfectly,no lags, try formatting it with fat32 with the help of your pc like I told you once before.

I have an ADATA 32gb class 10 card. I will try that
Edit: Ever since I tried partitioning the sd card with MiniTool Partition Wizard the card won't show up on my pc. The software says that it is a (Bad Disk). Note that I can use the card perfectly fine on my macbook pro and the phone also recognizes the card. If I put the card into my phone and connect with USB it works fine.

External microSD Card Slow in LG G3, Fast on PC

I had a 128GB microSD card in my LG G3, a 128GB Samsung EVO Select microSD card. After only a year I was seeing slow read/write benchmark speeds (using A1 SD Bench) & was also seeing some lag so I replaced it with a 128GB Sandisk Extreme Pro. But the speed for the Sandisk is the same.
The app A1 SD Bench shows them both doing Read: 42MB/sec, Write: 38MB/sec. I've seen others that see speeds of 70MB/sec and higher. Both cards are formatted exFAT.
I'm concerned that maybe I've made tweaks using Trickster Mod that might have slowed the card down? Or could there be another reason? Thanks to anyone that can help.
I don't know what's causing that. I also had a problem with my LG G3 851 and the SD card. Basically the SD card died and I can't read anything from it nor reformat nor anything. It was a 128gb SanDisk, one of the faster ones, running Lineage OS 16.1. I ended up just figuring I didn't really need the SD card in my case. I'm sorry your's is running slow. All I can say is try to factory reset the phone back to stock and see if that solves the problem.
Factory reset ("saying a prayer") is too drastic a step and rarely solves anything, but I did solve the problem.
Using Desk Genius on my PC I created a single partition on the microSD card (Most people just format, you must create a partition first). Then using Windows 7 disk format I formatted the microSD card for exFAT, 128K cluster size. Now the microSD card flies!!!
It took me a full weekend of testing to come up with this. I tried using various tools to partition, and various tools to format, all with different cluster sizes. This gave me the best performance.
Tools included Disk Genius, EaseUS Partition Master, MiniTool Partition Wizard, Windows 7 built-in tools, and a lot more.
EDIT: I forgot to add, after formatting you need to go back into Disk Genius and do a 4K alignment check (it's in the Tools menu). Alignment to 4K boundaries prevents extra read/write cycles and improves performance.
If it fails 4K alignment then you need to partition and reformat all over again.
That's awesome! I'll keep that in mind if I go get another SD card some day. I didn't realize that the format could mess up the read/write speeds. I wonder if a wrong format made my SD card die. If I do get another SD card, this time I'll keep the receipt in case it stops working again. I had a PNY SD card die on me in my Surface 3 as well.
It's not just the reformat, you have to repartition as well. And I forgot to mention you need to check for 4K alignment too (I edited my OP).
