Ok so I just got my phone fully rooted woah took awhile hit some speed bumps but thankfully trucked through it!
Ok here is my information I used toasts 2 part method
So is this all correct am I good to go start playing with custom ROMS or no?
Firm version
2.1 Update
Base Band
1.39.00.05.31
Kernal
2.6.29-a2443432
build number (dont think you need this do you?)
software
1.32.651.1
Also how do I get apps that are not from the market the apk files I googled it but didnt reveal much
thanks
well, to test that your nand is unlocked you can use terminal emulator or connect to your pc, use adb shell and use this command: remount rw
if that works your nand is unlocked and yes you should be good to go.
As for the apk files, which ones were you looking for?

well bad news I opened the command bar on my pc typed in
adb shell
remount rw
it said error damnit what did I do wrong
Everything went like the IDIOT proof guide said lol
anyway apk files I dont know is there a place to browse them? Or whats good how do I find some?
sorry still learning trying to learn fast
thanks again!
so do i have to unroot and re root again??
or?
also if so how do I unroot?
sorry, when you are in adb shell type:
su
remount rw
As for the app's.... I am still a little confused what you are asking, but all the apps can be browsed on the phone from the market app. I dont think you can browse the market from your pc
I just heard there were different apks out there that are not in the market? I dunno I can search that later though.
ok so i pulled up adb
typed in
adb shell
su
(it copied su)
remount rw
remount rw
:remount not found
I thought it was
Code:
adb remount rw
Try that. If it works, you are ready to flash ROMs. You don't have to have NAND unlocked to flash ROMs, it prevents errors with certain ROMs though.
that would make sense! I was working from the terminal emulator on my phone

P.S. Thanks!
P.S. I was looking at a different ROM and it has a different base band does this matter for me to use it or not?
you will just have to update your radio to match the baseband. There should be a link in the post to the corresponding radio or something.
Flashing a radio is just like flashing a rom, minus the wiping. So if you can get the rom to flash you should have no trouble upgrading the radio

Yeah I followed the link for the radio and it said it was the latest one clearly there is an update I did a search but cannot find any others ones.
Can someone point me to the right direction?
Also I followed Part 1 and 2 so my NAND should be unlocked/rooted right?
I really want to get rid of those dumb sprint things.
Thanks very much cant thank you enough for helping me!

No problem.
What you did was remount the protected areas of the file system to be writeable. You can delete, write, or move system files and such in this mode, so if that worries you you can always just
Code:
adb remount ro
And there you go, it is read only again.

almost all custom roms will remove these. Its only the stock rooted roms that leave them in

If you flash a different ROM they usually come back.
A handy way to remove Sprint .apks is to use Titanium Backup or Root Explorer. If you want to use adb, just remount it as rw and do something like this
Code:
rm /system/app/Sprint_TV.apk
Sprint apps include:
Sprint_NASCAR.apk
Sprint_Navigation.apk
Sprint_NFL.apk
Sprint_TV.apk
Sprint_TVWidget.apk
Some ones you may need to keep are:
Sprint_VVM.apk <- Voicemail App
WifiRouter.apk <- Sprint's HotSpot Program (Replace it with Wifi Tether in the marketplace)
Just make sure you don't remove anything you need.

1) Here is a link to the latest radios.

They should all flash correctly.
2) There are so many great custom ROMs out. Baked Snack is nice, and it is themed. DamageControl has so many features it is mind-blowing. Fresh is a good ROM, too.
You can flash one a day until you find one you like. It is really up to the individual.

I feel dumb now what is winmax?
wimax is for your 4g
yes, when you can switch between roms, although you always make sure you wipe! it is very important so you dont get weird errors or boot loops.
Have you heard of nandroid backup and restore? In the example you mentioned, if you were trying a new rom and you might want to go back to what you had previously, you could do a nandroid backup then flash the new rom, and if you didn't like it then you could do a nandroid restore instead of re-flashing the previous rom

yes very little I think I made 3 how do I delete them sense we are on that topic now LOL
Im kinda iffy on how to create on though
They are stored on your sd card. Its super easy to use, when you are in your recovery just choose the option backup/restore (or something similar) and choose which you want to do, and that's all there is too it!
If you are sure you are not going to need the backups, just go the your sd card and there should be a folder called nandroid or the like, and you can delete the folder inside corresponding to your backup. -- Although for best practice you should keep one backup from an image you know worked, just in case you ever mess up you will have at least one restoration image.
Hey guys I have a quick question. My buddy has the Samsung Epic 4g and was running from store stock DK18 build. He recently updated to DK28 using the leaked update.zip method. So far his phone is working fine with the exception of the gps not working. I dont own a samsung and after reading through all this info im super glad cause I see nothing but problems from what I am reading. Things are so much easier with my OG moto droid haahhahahah. He wants to root his phone and install a custom rom.
But most of the roms I look at say you need the dk28 modem installed first. Was the DK28 modem installed with the DK28 2.2 update zip? Or it wasnt included with that? How can I tell on his phone if he has the DK28 modem? Is the only way to get the DK28 modem on his phone by flashing it using odin? I find it hard to believe that there is no update.zip for it by now. If anyone can help me out with this or point me in the right direction I would appreciate it. Would much rather just find the update zip for the dk28 modem so I dont have to mess around with odin since I dont own a samsung.
There are way to many threads on here regarding this issue so its kinda hard to sort through them all. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
Go to Settings=>About Phone. This will tell you you're baseband version. If it says DK28 at the end you're set...otherwise read on.
I just flashed Bonsai 2.0 and the modem was not included. I used the signed modem update afterwards from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=861341
Without the DK28 modem you won't be able to get a signal through the cell radio. Wifi worked but the device was switching airplane mode on and off every half second. Flashed the modem AFTER the rom...I don't recommend this... and all is well.
I was also coming from DI18 and stock rom with a modified kernel.

Ok ok awesome I was thinking that about the baseband version but wasnt sure so figured I would ask. So he does have the dk28 at the end. Thats good. One less step he has to take. How do you like Bonsai? I was actually looking at that one for him. That will probably be the first one he will try.
One more question. How did you root the phone? Did you use the z4root app and then download rom manager and flash clockwork that way? Or did you use one of these one click root programs that I see in this forum? What do you think the easiest way is for him to get root and clockwork recovery on his phone?
Thanks for all your help Zetter I appreciate it.
The best way to root is to use the one-click. It will give you root, recovery, and the recovery redirect.
Rom Manager will not flash clockwork without a custom kernel and z4 doesn't install recovery or the redirect.

For one, it allowed the use of multiple recoveries. For example, for a short period, many of us were running cwm 2.5.1.0 AND 2.5.1.2 since one only supports rfs and the other only supports ext4. Booting into recovery via the death-grip brought you to 2.5.1.0 and the redirect allowed you to reboot into 2.5.1.2.
I believe the redirect is also what allows programs like quickboot to reboot to recovery mode without using the death-grip.

Awesome thank you for the info Digi. We used the one click root method and now we have root and when holding the volume , camera and power button we go into clockwork recovery 2.5.1.0. Is there a special button or combo you need to hit for the redirector to work? Or it reboots you into the correct clockworkmod automatically depending on what filesystem RFS/EXT4 you are currently using? Sorry to be such a pain. This stuff is kinda new to me since I dont own a samsung. I really appreciate your help though.
Ok I after reading the bonsai rom thread I found the new oneclickroot with clockwork3. So I tried that one now and was able to reboot into clockwork 3.x.x.x
and install the bonzai rom. Had a problem after the install completed. The phone wouldnt boot up just got hung on the black samsung screen. I know in the Bonzai thread it said not to wipe but after the phone hung I booted into recovery and and did a wipe then installed the bonzai zip again and the phone booted up. GPS still doesnt work so that kinda sucks. But I guess its all trial an error. I will keep reading. Thanks for the help.
Is there a way to check on his phone if he has the ext4 filesystem or the rfs. I am guessing since he has cw3 and was able to boot into the new ext4 bonzai rom he converted to the ext4 FS but would like to know if there is a way to check.

Like you said, by installing CWM3 you have automatically converted to EXT4...BUT if you really want to check: from adb you can type 'adb shell mount' without the quotes. Or you can type 'su' (enter) then 'mount' from terminal emulator. You should see EXT4 as the fs type for /system, /data, and /cache.

I've tried and I've tried, and I've tried and I can't get the newest clockworkmod to flash so I can try to taste some gingerbread. I've looked a lot, and I've tried to use the "easy way" that's stickied at the top of this thread and I've tried to push through terminial as well but it tells me the image isn't found. So, please do not tell me to search and what not because more than half the time I do in fact search, considering I am an active member of this forum I know all about it. Idk if I'm naming the file right, or if I'm suppose to extract files from the zip or what not, but nothing seems to work. So help a brotha out, and tell me what YOU did to get it to flash with step by step, detailed if possible steps. I appreciate you taking the time to read, and possibly help. I know its annoying, but I would love you for ir

post the steps you took, perhaps someone can glean an operational error from that. my guess is you need to navigate to the proper directory or rename the file
I flashed it using terminal from phone and recovery on sd.
I have heard ppl getting issues with that image not found thing, some other files have to be copied to allow the flash_image command to work but cant remember where.
What might work,..... use rom manager to update your recovery if you havent used rom manager before. Then check where rom manager places the downloaded recovery. Then rename ur recovery v3 to the exact same name as the 2.5 and place in the relevent folder, then try to get rom manager to flash it, like tricking it.
This method was reported to work a while back.
Worth a bash?
If fail, drop me a pm, ill have a look for that flash_image binary stuff when i get home tonight pal.

Have you tried this method?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=902493
The main plan I was trying to do was replace and trick rom manager into thinking it was the original but it is really 3.0. So I replace thr image and rename and flash clockwork and when I go into recovery and its a no go. Then when I try to flash it via terminal it says the image isn't found when I know it is on the root of my card. Do I need to unzip the file and take the imgage out and place it on the root of my sd card, or put the zip on my sdcard and try to flash it?(doing it via terminal). How do I need to rename the file? I've also read somewhere that I need to have the correct rom binary, is that correct? I'm running a virtuous sense rom right now. What does that mean?

I was having similar problems with flash_image, and I managed to get 3.0.0.5 on there by:
1. Flashing back to stock and starting fresh (did this with a pc10img via bootloader)
2. Rooting via the gfree -f as on the wiki
3. Downloading CW Rom Manager from the market
4. flashing the 2.x recovery that comes with that
5. Use Rom manager to download and install Cyanogen 6.1.1 clearing data and cache
6. Use flash_image instructions linked above by raitchison to install CWR 3.0.0.5.
Probably the long way around, but helped me get a grasp of what all was going on with my phone, and gave me a clean slate to start with. Haven't upgraded to CM7 yet, but now I know I can when I'm ready.
I know it doesn't help you now, but...........
Just read a tweet from koush that he is going to be releasing the CWM Recovery 3.0.0.x officially very soon, he is just waiting on cyanogen to finish running some test with it, so for people having issues with flashing CWM recovery 3.0.0.x you should see some official support from koush real soon.
It actually does help because I can wait a little more for the convicence of flashing. Thank you sir.

I got it to work just flashing the reovery through terminal. Turns out since I was using a sense before hand, and not stock of a cm 6.1.1 I didn't have the correct binary for the rom. So I flashed cm6.x.x and then flashed the newest cw3. Its all good.

there is also a "how to" on it. But if you know how to copy and paste when your SD card is mounted to computer its pretty simple

+1, I don't even mount to my computer though. I do it all through Astro. Easy breezy.
that does work, but the only reason it wasnt working because i didnt have the correct rom binary because i was using virtuous sense.

So I installed CWM recovery, and installed the rmk root setup zip. Before I installed it, I wiped the cache but not the Dalvik cache. When I rebooted, it hung on the white HTC screen. I went back into recovery and wiped dalvik cache, cache and even data and settings, then installed the zip again and it still hangs. can somebody help me? Honestly at this point I just want to be able to use my phone again.
Thanks in advance
Did you install the root zip that included the froyo stock kernel? I made the same mistake. Just have to adb a compatible 2.3 kernel into your sdcard and flash it.

i'm pretty sure this is the zip i used. if thats what you're talking about, then how do I fix it?
You cant use that .zip because it uses the Froyo kernal which is incompatible. You have to push jcase's GB kernal to your sd card then flash that.
I'm sorry for the stupid question, and thank you so much for your help, but where can i find that? and what commands do I use to push the kernel to the phone?
Have no fear as long as you can get into CWM then you are still good.
How long does it hang, sometimes it takes a few minutes for that HTC screen to go away, especially if you wiped data. you might want to wait, a little bit.
You can always download a stock rom(jcase plainjane rom), get into CWM, and then mount your USB to be able to install from your computer, and then flash the new rom.
Did you make a backup before you flashed the update, you can always recover.

If you can get into CWM, look for Mounts/Storage and mount your USB so you can access your Phones SD card from your computer, then transfer the file from your computer to your phone.
or use adb if you are familiar with that.
you did get S-Off first right?
yes i have s-off, no i did not make a recovery (i wasnt aware i could do that before i rooted but i have come to terms with the fact that I lost a bunch of data).
okay, so i put the file on my sd card and... what? is it a zip file? where can i find it?
just so i understand, once I get this rooted kernel, i will be rooted and i will be able to install the cwm app and go from there?
and i don't necessarily want the stock rooted... i guess i could go from there but for right now could i download a 2.3 kernel with a different rom? are kernels bundled with roms or do i need to install them separately?
sorry, i'm a new user so i keep having to wait 5 minutes...
Kernels, can be rom specific or bundled but currently for the dinc2 there arent a lot so make sure it doesnt say it belongs to a specific rom otherwise it might not work.
Jcase has a stock kernel and rom he put up a while back for gingerbread.
They will be a .zip file and all you have to do is using recovery choose zip file and run it, since you already deleted everything.
When you install a rom, it will add su and busybox, and root your phone. You need your phone rooted to be able to do anything, after S-off.
if you have recovery installed then you have CWM and really what you want is Rom Manager to do backups.

you'll get bootloops if you flash it on a sense rom.

Yup!
Good Luck!
I flashed 6.1.1 of ARHD, enjoying it now . Is it that after you flash it, it will override CWM recovery and give you back the old white bootloader, or am I doing something wrong. I have Eng S-OFF and Radio S-OFF, so I flashed both the radio and the rom. Thanks in advance.
I don't thing you should get either back. Im not sure on this one.
Or maybe I should phase it in this way. Should I redownload Rom Manager to get back CWM Recovery after I flash ARHD and its recommended Radio?
The superwipe script for ARHD flashes 4Ext recovery. Theres not too much difference between Clockwork Mod Recovery and 4Ext as far as i can see. But im not looking too hard lol. If you want Clockwork Mod back you will have to install Rom Manager again and reflash the recovery. But do you really need clockwork mod and is it really worth the effort?
Edit:Oh youre not doing anything wrong. Just use vol + and - to navigate to recovery option in bootloader and it will take you to 4Ext recovery
the boot loader remains. its from there you have to select recovery ,and if you have flashed arhd then you now have 4ext as you recovery and there is no need for you to get clockwork mod back as 4ext does the same job and kinda works the same way too in terms of navigating through the options
Thanks guys for the help. I found it already.. Guess it was called clockworkmod RECOVERY for a reason.. So if I want to flash a battery (framework) mod, and they say use CWM, I just need to use 4xt instead?
Edit: if I flashed the radio before the rom, will it be wiped due to the full wipe script.

No the radio will not be affected. However make sure the Rom contains the matching ril. Otherwise you will have to flash the correct ril.

I guess I will stick to my current theme.. I'm scared that I might brick my device.
By my reckoning, your more likely to brick your DHD during the rooting process than flashing a new Rom. I'm changing my Rom daily at the moment trying to find my favorite and I've had no trouble at all

Maybe tonight I should try flashing a theme. Changing roms is irritating in a way that I have to backup and restore my contacts again, and I haven't got the hang of using TB.
Sent from my ARHD powered, HTC Desire HD
Someone feel free to chime in, but I dont think TB backs up your contacts. If it does, it hasnt been for me. Anyways, just get a contacts backup app off the market. SMS&Contacts Backup works well for me. I dont use the SMS part of it though. although there are plenty of others available.

I just realised that you could use the Backup options in People App, if you just want to keep the contacts.
Just flashed a none compatible lockring yesterday, luckily I had my backup of the rom done haha...

You should probably create a new thread here, as this does not attract answers for your question as this is about CWM Good luck though, this 6.1.1 I flashed from stock, so I cannot help you .

How do you restore that APK? I restored my backup when I had the same problem as you, just to realise that that backup was the one I made, when I first flashed the ROM. Then I was like NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

assuming you made a backup of the apk itself, its pretty easy.
what i did was boot the phone up normally (I sincerely hope you have USB Debugging enabled before you altered that file...), opened a command prompt then i did the following:
Code:
adb devices (make sure my phone is being recognized by adb, if it is, it'll show
"List of devices attached" and then show the s/n of your phone, if not,
it'll show "List of devices attached" and then be blank)
cd c:\droid (this is where i had the backup of Idlescreen_base.apk so i dont
have to type the full directory when i push)
adb remount /system (mounts /system so i can mess around in there)
adb push Idlescreen_base.apk /system/app
adb reboot
when i did it, i didnt know about the reboot command, so i did a battery pull. you asking me how i did it made me dig around a little bit because i couldnt remember exactly how i did it, i could've SWORN i did it from either hboot or fastboot, but when i tried just now to send a txt file to /system i couldnt get the phone to even be recognized by adb. I'm glad i verified everything i did instead of just start rattling it all off, because it would've been wrong as hell lol. hope this helps you out, any questions, just ask

OMG, you deserve many thanks for that man! The problem, is, how do I know which .apk I have to backup. Do I open the Flashable zip to check everything inside, then backup all the apks in my phone. And which apps to you use to backup? You used a file manager to navigate in your phone then copy the files to the memory card then to your PC?

thats exactly what I did.
I was trying to remove the icons from the lock screen, and that only required me to mess with one file, Idlescreen_base.apk i'm not sure what file the lock ring is in, maybe ask one of the themers?
EDIT: downloaded a random lockring zip, looks like the only apk's it flashes are Idlescreen_base.apk and fusion.apk (thats the 2.3.3 lockrings), the 2.3.4 lockrings only flash fusion.apk which are both located in /system/app
alternatively, why dont you just download a compatible lockring and flash it? that SHOULD fix your problem as well. What version of GB are you running? also, lets take this to PM, we're WAY off topic right now
