[Q] how to turn off vibration of menu/back/home/search buttons ? - Defy General

Hi,
I don't know if this is possible because I have not found any setting to deactivate this. At least for me is a lil annoying... does anyone know how to do it?
Thanks!

At the moment you cannot turn off Haptic Feeback for the keys at the bottom of the phone. Motorola says it's a bug. Maybe it'll get unbugged soon.

chmod 0444 /sys/class/timed_output/vibrator/enable
would totally disable the vibrator.

What does that mean?

I think if you don't know what it me, you shouldn't try it ^^.

"How to"
In order to turn off keys vibration, you need to
- Have root on your defy (you can use z4root application, use google, download apk, install it)
- Have explorer that is able to view/edit system files (f.e. Super Manager from Android Market, remeber set "use Root" in this app settings)
- Go to the folder /sys/class/timed_output/vibrator/ with f.e. Super Manager
- Create file called "enable", and then change this file atributes (chmod 444 - read, read read) for this file with super managers, and thats all.
Regards.

headblow - your instructions work brilliantly until the phone's rebooted, and then the vibrations come back. Any way to make that stick so it's not reset every time?

Can u plz make an update zip file.

Sent from my MB525 using XDA App

Found a couple of interesting things on another forum:
There's an app someone has cooked up that will make the permission changes to the file for you, so you don't have to hunt around in Super Manager or similar file explorer.
There's no way to make the change permanent, because you're not dealing with a physical file on disk. There's an app called Autostart than runs a script as root on startup though, so adding something like:
chmod 444 /sys/class/timed_output/vibrator/enable
into that script should always turn off vibration on startup. Haven't tried it yet, wife's phone is with her at work.

Worket for me
but how ever here is just temp when i get reboot the vibrate back , but i have a bug the call is to disable vibrations and for the call vibration is neccessary , i wish disable only for the butons

I''m disabling vibrations globally with application Streak Vibrations. Vibrating during unlocking device and button feedback drives me mad.

Hi,
I have a defy (stock 2.1) since some months now ... and I have got the same annoying issue...
Because I found nothing to answer this problem, I coded an app for myself some days ago ... but if it can help someone else ...
However, you must to be root for a full using of it.
This app stops the vibrate totaly (with a 0444 on /sys/class/timed_output/vibrator/enable) but switch it to enable (with a 777) when a call.
The app can be started at boot.
Fits perfectly for my usage ... but I'm aware if you have suggestions to improve it. Sources are shared on a SVN if someone wants them.
(I can post the url later when I have enough rights to post a link on this forum).
(sorry for my english and for the crap icon for the app : I'm not a designer )
EDIT : link for downloading is removed because a topic about VibraFix is created here.

is the problem still present on android 2.2 ?

yes on my defy with official update (Android2.2.2 / 34.164.3.MB525.Retail.en.FR).
I still using my app ^^

Freakin' awesome! I've been trying to get the haptic to stop. This worked perfectly. Maybe you should post it in the apps thread, and/or Market? Or is it there? Either way thanks so much!

Nope. I think I will not pay for publishing a fix for the Defy ...
The only thing I will do one day : change the icon because I don't like it and enable vibrate for SMS/MMS.

[N2E][1.0][1.0.1] TouchNooter 1.6.24

This will officially not work for 1.1
What it does:
Enables ADB via uRamdisk
Installs su and Superuser.apk
Installs Busybox
Installs Button Savior
Installs Go Launcher
Installs NookColor Tools (To Enable Non-Market Installs)
Installs Gapps (Gmail, Market, Youtube, Others)
System Files that get Modified:
/system/build.prop - Enabling Google Check In
packages.xml - Allows Gapps to install properly.
framework.jar - Should allow a proper Android ID to generate.
Changes:
June 24, 2011 -
Removed: Multitouch Permission
Added: Modified framework.jar
June 22, 2011 - Fixed: Script not running at boot.
June 20, 2011 - Initial Release
Before you begin:
You must already have a registered Nook Simple Touch
You must have a Gmail/Youtube linked Account. IF you used a Gmail account for B&N Registration you should use that one for this process.
You must either have dd (Linux) or WinImage (Windows) software.
You must have an external microSDCard reader or this will not work. Do NOT use the Nook Simple Touch.
You must have enough intelligence to follow instructions.
Let's get started:
Download TouchNooter from here: touchnooter-1-6-24.zip
Linux: Unzip and use dd if=touchnooter-1-6-24.img of=/dev/sdcard
Windows: Unzip and use WinImage to "Restore Virtual Hard Disk Image" to your SDcard.
Windows Alternative: https://launchpad.net/win32-image-writer/+download
Power off your Nook Simple Touch.
Insert TouchNooter SDcard into your Nook Simple Touch.
Power on your Nook Simple Touch.
You should see the screen "Rooted Forever".
It will boot like normal and you should be asked to select a launcher now. (If not use Button Savior to go home. This will bring up the launcher chooser.)
That was the hard part, now to the simple stuff.
Upon boot unlock your screen.
At the Android Welcome Screen skip Sign In.
Enable Location Services when given the option.
Connect to Wifi and launch Youtube from Go Launcher's App Drawer (Or the App Drawer of your Choice).
Click the Menu button (The right one in the middle of the status bar).
Select "My Channel" and Login using your Gmail Account.
Exit Youtube and Launch Gmail from "Extras".
Sync your Gmail Account and Exit. (If it fails to sync that is fine.)
Open up Market and Accept Terms and Service.
If you made it this far your nook should be successfully Rooted. Go Download an App to make sure.
Enable Non-Market Installs by running the NookColor Tools App.
If your Youtube fails to launch Uninstall and Reinstall Youtube from /data/app
Go to Settings > Device Info > SdCard > UnMount > Format
Thanks To:
Arnold Snarb - modified framework.jar
nemith - helping me figure out getting it to run at boot.
JesusFreke - For getting root.
MrMuffin - For the original Market Hack that we're using.
Currently Working On: TouchNooter 1.11.x
I've probably screwed up, but perhaps not too badly. Tried to follow all the steps and got the system files copied to media, and then to replace the main system files, but there I got confused. I ended up rebooting without attempting to install the youtube app, which I didn't find in the download. Even now, a lot looks like it is working, but I can't even attempt to sign in to google cause I can't get a keyboard to come up to allow me to enter my user name and password. Is there any help for me, or am I a total dunce needing to start over? thanks!
EDIT: I see I am screwed -- no keyboard is coming up for me anywhere. I guess I can go through a major reset but if anyone has a suggestion to just get the keyboard back I will appreciate it.
EDIT2: Well I got past that, simply chose multitouch keyboard instead of Gingerbread in NookColor Tools.
EDIT3: But now I am stuck again as I can't sign in to a google account... says can't establish a reliable data connection to the server, even though my wifi is fine. But at least at the moment everything else is fine, though the keyboard isn't working very well (but it does work; lots of ghosting)
An .img file is being uploaded for TouchNooter 1.6.20 It'll do all the copy and edit stuff, the only thing it can't do is create an android ID.
In the "GappsAndMore" there was some keyboards which were from the NC it was just a raw pull from AN. This is more refined with things that could cause issues removed. (Like Keyboards, Framework.jars from the NC, etc.)

I'd suggest a wipe and running TouchNooter... GappsAndMore had Keyboards and stuff in it and removed the stock keyboard =\
is a wipe in the nook touch holding down the power for 20 seconds?
No you need to do a complete wipe by triggering recovery, but I don't know how to trigger recovery yet.
oh well the perils of early adoption. I'll follow the thread with anticipation!

You could try 8 failed boots. Basically you power it on and then power it off before it fully boots. Do that 8 times and it might trigger recovery.
Confirmed this works great. I'm going to find a fix for the calendar.

This doesn't seem to work for me at all... I tried restoring the backup image and starting from scratch and it still will not work. I tried enabling Google Apps manually and it won't work for me either.
I think I'm done, if the 7th time wasn't the charm then I'm giving up for now...

I did a reset of the device back to the out of the box experience, registered with my BN account, shut down and followed the directions to the letter. I had no luck at all. It just shows the Rooted Forever screen, then boots normally is if nothing happened.
Sorry Guys and Gals. Entirely my fault. It seems a combination of my own forgetfulness and bad scripting (I forgot proper codes and methods used in AN) caused this just to do nothing. I'm uploading a version as I'm typing this and will remove "BROKEN" from the title when it's up.
Still broken. init.rc isn't running it's script properly.
Script can be ran manually with:
Code:
adb shell sh /sdcard/nooter/tmp/scripts/Nooter
Will be working on getting it to trigger properly

KH3/KG3/KG6 E-Mail APK for device-administratorless Exchange access :)

Hey guys,
just thought i'd share this with you. For those who don't like corporate control.
This Email.apk should pretend to the exchange server that device administrator is active, while not really enabling it.
While configuring your Exchange account there will be a message that device administration will be enabled.. If you press OK you would normally be shown the permissions needed by the device admin and be prompted to confirm them. This screen won't be shown anymore. You can also check "Settings/Location & Security Settings/Select device administrators", which will show an empty list now.
Have fun.
EDIT: KH3 version added
EDIT2: For all those curious guys in here.. The patch is that easy actually.. I'm too lazy to make a diff so..
The file that needs to be changed is com/android/email/SecurityPolicy.smali:
You need to find this method signature and change the first boolean constant:
.method public isActive(Lcom/android/email/SecurityPolicy$PolicySetZ
.locals 12
.parameter "policies"
.prologue
const/4 v7, 0x0 <- just change this value to 0x1

That's it.
Fantastic thank you
But how do I push this on to my device? Tried to install via ASTRO but Email app already installed and can't reinstall over the top!
Any help appreciated!
You need to place it manually in /system/app after removing the existing Email.apk AND Email.odex. I have to look into making a CWM-package.. Until then you'd have to place it there manually using a mobile terminal app or ADB.

Unfortunatelly, doesn't seem to work.
I used the older 2.3.4 email.apk with bypassed security before this one, and it worked fine (replaced in root explorer in system/app/, no odex as I'm running Cognition 1.31).
Upon creating account, asks for security changes, I click Accept (or activate), it asks me to create a password. No way to choose "None" for security settings.
Email doesn't update, says error connecting to server due to security settings.
EDIT: FIXED. Weird though - when renaming Email.apk in Root Explorer to Email_Orig.apk, it kept the reference to it, and when setting up account, it didn't use the new Email.apk, but still used Email_Orig.apk (even after reboot).
Complete uninstall of Email.apk, reboot, copy new Email.apk, then setup the account - worked.
Worked for me using Root Explorer (moved stock apk and odex, copied new, rebooted, reconfigured Exchange account, done).
Thanks!
Yes.. You need to completely wipe Email.odex and Email.apk, place my file there and reboot. Or if it doesn't work out, better reboot twice (After deleting and after placing the file there)..

You may need to reconfigure your email accounts.. If you delete the apk in /system/app and reboot afterwards Android would possibly wipe the userdata for this app.. Not my fault

[Q] How to delete downloaded system update and prevent future updates/notifications?

Im still on KitKat and want to stay that way, but my N7 has automatically downloaded Lollipop and has the notification to install. How can I remove this notification, delete this update to free up space, and prevent it from happening again?
I know this must have been covered someplace else, but Ive spent the last 20 minutes searching and havent found a definitive answer....
Thanks!
I got this from some thread here.
Depends if you are rooted or not.
If rooted, you need to disable 3 receivers. To do so use one of the apps:
Autorun Manager, or
Autostarts (free in F-Droid).
The 3 receivers to disable :
service:com.google.android.gms.update.SystemUpdateService$Receiver
(this will run on boot competed).
com.google.android.gms.update.SystemUpdateService$ActiveReceiver-
(this will check for OTA on connectivity change).
com.google.android.gms.update.SystemUpdateService$SecretCodeReceiver
(this will check for OTA when your phone "handles" the secret code).
.........
If not rooted, I "think" you can go to
Settings / apps
Go to All tab
Select "Google Play Services" and unselect "show notifications".
This second method has some disadvantages but I don't remember what they are.
Hope this helps.
I'm in autostarts and seemingly have all of these disabled (I am rooted) as seen in the screenshot, but still getting the update notification (as also seen in the screenshot).
Thoughts?

Bump for an answer. Would like to know this too
I found this yesterday:
Download System Tuner, free from google play (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ccc71.pmw&hl=en)
Open App
Click Startups
Navigate to Google Play Services - If you do not see this in the list, press add in the bottom right hand quarter and navigate to it
press and hold over Google Play Services
Press Open
Press Details
Press Activities
Navigate to update.SystemUpdateActivity and uncheck it
restart phone
This did the trick for me. I am unsure whether this also removes other notifications from google, but it certainly got rid of the annoying "system update downloaded" notification.
Or better still if you are using xposed framework download the NotifyClean module. Let the Update System notification appear after a reboot and then select it in NotifyClean to get rid of it. Brilliant!

Unless I'm mistaken, all this is doing is hiding the notification. While that's great, the notification currently says "System update downloaded", so my assumption is space is being taken up by this download which I'd really like to clear up.
With the issues many have reported running Lollipop on the N7, I'm really surprised there isnt a common, well known process for this.
Then try my message #5 above.

How to disable carrier-check for native WiFi Tether (no root)

*EDIT* This appears to only be working for people with NON-unlimited data plans. I apologize for the inconvenience...
Saw this over in the AT&T subforum, originally posted by @ExTREmE99 , just reposting here.
This will disable the carrier check on your Verizon G4 and allow you to use the native WiFi tether - no root needed!
1. Enable developer mode (Go to Settings -> About phone, and click on the build number until the developer mode is enabled).
2. Enable USB debugging under Settings -> Developer options
3. Connect the device with a USB cable to a computer with the Android SDK platform tools installed
4. Start an adb shell: adb shell
5. In the adb shell, run these commands one by one:
settings put global tether_dun_required 0
settings put system tether_entitlement_check_state 0
reboot
When your phone comes back up you will have a fully functional native WiFi tether
i must be doing something wrong because i still get the "you need a subscription" popup
Worked for me, thanks! Needed this a few days ago and couldn't use it n was like "F***, wish I had root" hahaha. Oh and also shouldn't this be posted in General?

don't use the hotspot app - in fact, disable that one.
You want to use the built in functionality to tether (not technically an app)
Go to settings, More (under wireless networks), then "Mobile Hotspot". You can setup your SSID and password in there. Also, you can create a shortcut in your notification bar by scrolling over to the right side, clicking edit, then checking the box next to "Mobile Hotspot"
Hope that helps.

Could you try disabling the verizon hotspot app? Mine was disabled way before I discovered this so I may need to add this step to the instructions. you may want to go through the steps one more time after that to ensure everything is set correctly. Don't forget to restart either. It works great on mine so it should for yours as well - unless you took the update a week ago?
Let me know - Thanks!

I've been very careful not to take the update. Is the hot spot app have a weird name or something? I can't seem to find it in the app manager or using rom toolbox

hmmm i think I'm confused. My Hotspot app is apparently still in my app drawer. When i click on it it just takes me to the native hotspot functionality.
Honestly I'd attempt to run those commands again. It would help if you took a screen shot of the command prompt window after running all of the commands. After each command it should pause for a second or two then jump to the next line with no errors or responses.
Is your USB debugging on? Also, are you in MTP or PTP USB mode when plugged into your PC?

Should it be? I assumed stuff like this went under the Help section since it was helping people. Maybe I'm wrong. If a MOD would like to correct me and maybe move the thread, feel free.

Tried multiple times and could not get it to work. adb looked successful but after reboot I still get a subscription check.

Have not taken any OTA.
This unfortunately doesn't seem to work for me either
I had to put my device in PTP mode in order for ADB to show the device, after the device was confirmed with adb devices, I issued the commands this is the output
Code:
C:\Users\NOTIMPORTANT\AppData\Local\Android\sdk>adb devices
List of devices attached
VS986931(changed the last four for security) device
C:\Users\NOTIMPORTANT\AppData\Local\Android\sdk>adb shell

When I attempt to enable hotspot I am greeted with the "Use of this service requires a subscription..."
FoxFi seems to work, I just HATE having to change my lock screen in order to use the damn thing!
I'm willing to run further tests and commands if you would like, please just let me know.
I have NOT taken any over the air update. I used the Debloater tool and blocked/hid the app.

when do you see the subscription message?
try typing:
adb devices
you should see a string of characters listing your device. if it shows no device, then you need to double check that you have your device drivers installed

Here's a screenshot of my terminal window:
I'm using the native tethering just like everybody else (Settings, More, flick the tethering switch to On and receive the service check). Haven't taken the OTA and have the service disabled via debloater tool. I appreciate the help!
At this point I'm not sure why some are reporting that this works while others aren't. I added a message on the original post warning that this isn't a for sure thing. I'll be sure to update if/when I find a fix or what is going wrong, but for now I think I have enough info to look into this. thanks for your help everyone and I hope that I can find a fix for this. Worst case - we have to wait until we have root to enable this.

Viper4Android not working right on stock ROM.

Having a problem with V4A on build .139. I am rooted, have Busybox free installed, and bought SELinux.
I use the stock music app, because I don't know how to sideload the info for other programs. Total newb here, first time rooting. Anyways, as I start the music app, V4A is not active, and I have to go to the EQ settings, then it starts. Then after about 5 min., playing with screen off, it shuts off. I have tried both Normal and Compatible FX settings, Compatible renders the driver useless. I have V4A set to force start, but that does nothing, and I've installed the latest version 3 times now, doing a driver removal, reboot, app removal reboot, redownload, re-install, setup etc. It still happens. Is there something I'm doing wrong. I've disabled the "Music FX" app that comes with the phone that is the basic EQ on the phone, so that's not interfering. I don't know what it could be. Does anyone else have this problem, and how did you solve it?
Much appreciated for the responses.
Check if you are using the Asus auto start manager, allow viper and uncheck cleanup in suspend option.

I am using Asus auto start. I did what you said, and I'm running a test now. It would usually run for about 15 min, then shut off. So, I'm doing the 15 min. test, then I'll try the music app shutdown and restart, and see if your suggestion worked. I hope so, it's been driving me nuts all day.:good:
I know, it drove me crazy too. What i did was change something in the "audio.conf" file. You have to erase some lines.
With this, android uses viper audio for everything.
for the audio conf thing look in the sticky posts, thats where i found it

Well, the 15 min. thing worked out. It seems to run no problem now. But when I shut the music player off, and restart it, I have to Force Stop V4A, then go into the EQ of the music player, then it kicks in.
I'll look for the "audio.conf" file, but how do I implement it, or write it on the phone. I'm not a user of ADB, and frankly, using developer tools scares me, as this is my first time rooting a phone. So, something straightforward would be great.

Just checked it: the file name is audio_policy.conf on /system/etc/.
Its the 7.2 on this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/zenfone2/general/asus-zenfone-2-flashing-recovery-mode-t3096596
I used a file explorer like "ES File explorer". Just edited the audio_policy.conf to erase the lines of it using the text editor. I dont remember which text editor i used though, i think it was the one built into the es file explorer.
By doing this i dont have to restart V4A anymore. I use spotify app, but i think its the same thing.
just remember to do a backup if anything.

Grrrrrr. I downloaded ES File Explorer, but it won't let me erase the lines of code you showed me. It just keeps telling me there's an error. Even though I gave it root access and all, it still won't do anything.
Download Root Browser and set audio_policy.conf rw-rw---

Root Browser won't let me edit permissions.
nvm. Didn't give it root access.
Okay, I screwed up. I changed the audio_effects.conf file permissions to rw-rw---, and now I have no sound. What's the correct sequence for that file?

Okay, now im trying to get PowerAmp working, and I've done everything suggested, and V4A refuses to start in it. It would be nice to get it going, as I can use the bluetooth connection in my truck, and I'm sick of the gaps in playback and other failings of the stock player. I've shut down the EQ and tone controls and limiter in PowerAmp, and activated the Music tweaks part of the app. If I long press on it, V4A comes up, but it's not working. Any help would be appreciated.
