Google Mapps application v5 download is available now
Vectored maps and offline caching works fine too. Head to market and update
love the 3D maps... shame I don't live in New York though (no 3D buildings in London)
one issue - Tilt/3D action works fine by dragging two fingers down the page, but I can't get the rotate function (two fingers and then rotate them) to work on my Desire.... user error or limitation of Desire functionality?

Bastards... maps updates always not available in my region
Truly one of the greatest updates in 2010! I have been waiting for this. Oh, and Zürich is available with 3D buildings. Thank god Google has some major Labs here
Even Oslo has 3-D buildings , too bad we cannot rotate.
I have tried to get the rotate by compass function to work, but I guess it is map rotating itself which is disabled, not the multitouch gesture.
You have to touch twice on compass, it works fine for me.

Tis good!
Google really seems to me kicking a$$ This is like a huge upgrade over the older version and quite unexpected too! Microsoft really seems to be losing out to android in a big way....
The annoying bug in pinch and zoom is now fixed.....earlier it used to suddenly zoom out like crazy or zoom in abruptly....it never used to smoothly zoom in/out...!
Great job google!
Can't see it in Romania...

Sorry, but what market fix do you have in mind ?
My problem is, in spite of having downloaded an update mid-December (and "About" reads "version 5.0, build 5014"), it still shows no sign of vectorized rendering.
So if there's some market fix to apply, I'll gladly do!
(For information, the Androïd Market upgraded itself at the sametime without any problem, and I have a International i9000, German firmware)
didnt notice that. Thanks
how do you know its not vector based
Well, the vector feeling just isn't there. It's still the same sequence when zooming: blurry zoomed bitmap, then grey grid, then tile by tile redrawing (downloading of bitmaps) at the new resolution. When using fingers for zooming (or shrinking), the zooming (shrinking) movement I initiate is carried through until it reaches the next zoom level.
Other reasons that make me think something is wrong with my 5.0 version:
According to the google help page about caching and offline reliability (www google com/support/mobile/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=1079238 - sorry no URL yet) I should have a "Cache Settings" menu item; all I find in the "More" submenu are "Labs", "Help", "Terms, Privacy & Notices", "About".
I never got anything from dragging down two fingers (which should "tilt" the map somehow)
Compass mode is not there either (first, tapping on the compass button to center the map on my current location, then tapping on it again to activate compass mode)
Funny thing is I've already had a google maps upgrade, and that was successful (what it changed, mainly, from the original version shipped with my device was that the "compass" button used to be a Lab feature, and was streamined in that version. I also think that the Google Places integration was much more comprehensive in that version).
Thanks for any help,
Hal'
What GPS oes evryone use? The google navigtions seems ok but I know there's gotta be something better... I tried the Aura but didn't like that I had to download differnt map paks for each state. Plus it didn't seem like there was a way to set it as default gps app... for instance if I googled an address and long clicked on it I never got an option to use Aura. I did like the diferent voices though. ( hate google voice) What GPS do you guys like?
* I'm just sayin......
I don't think there is anything out there better than Google Navigation. Not even the standalone GPS units LOL.

I have to agree. The looks and function of Google Navigation are excellent. Far and away, better than my standalone Garmin Nuvi. If not for the fact that a data connection is required for Google Nav, I would probably not be using the Garmin at all anymore.
If you want an app that has maps loaded on the SD card, CoPilot is said to be pretty good by some folks on these forums. And reasonably priced, as well (at $5). But I have not personally tried it.
Ye the google navigtion is great and I know its kinda petty but I just hate the voice.. (I know I could turn the volume down but I thiink they should include a way to change it)

Just get a new voice. I have the UK Victoria voice and it's a LOT better.
I believe the GPS will work now with or without data. It was a new feature with the latest release along with the traffic rerouting.
Also, you may want to check Navigon. I use them as my standalone gps and they only focus on mobile gps now. I have heard good things about their mobile apps but as for their standalone gps, I swore by it until google came on board with their latest one.
Copilot is pretty good. Been using it for a couple mths already nice ui extremely smooth, what's best is that everything is on the sd so u can use it without using data to co.stantly render maps

i don't think so
For offline nav, i've tried igo and sygic. Igo was ok, a bit slow and buggy. Sygic has been great so far: maps by tomtom with free updates, nav still works with screen locked for those of us on motorbikes, free trial available in the market, and it's not restricted to the US. That last one was the big one for me.

i use iGO and vary pleased.
Is there any GB rom that has the compass working correctly?
I've tried several different radios with leedroid 3.06r2 but with no joy
Thanks
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
I think no at the moment
perhaps with the official release there may be a fix
I fail to see the importance personally, but that's because I don't use any apps needing it. Google Maps would be handy but meh, I have a sat nav so rarely use that as it is
I do use google navigation, do a spot of geo caching to keep the kids interested when we are dragging them on country walks and I just don't like stuff not working.
Looks like I may have to downgrade until its fixed.
Have you tried CM7.0.3?
I found the compass and orientation sensor working correctly in 7.0.3 on my Desire.
Compass is a general bug in Gingerbread. It has been reported to Google and they have to release a fix.

im using co-pilot premium which works fine on mine, sometimes closes immediately but upon re-opening it is fine
my copilot 8 works fine for me.
I had issue with Navigon 4 which they refunded me because it wasn't yet compatible with ICS.

Dear S,
Thank you for contacting CoPilot Technical Support.
Please be aware that at the moment copilot is not fully compatible with the ice cream sandwich OS, we are working to release an update very soon through the android market..
If you have any further questions, or feel that this incident has not been resolved to your satisfaction, please do not hesitate to bring this to our attention.

Google doesn't have Navigation. It is avalible only for USA and few other countrys also it spend your data and this can be problem if you have limited data plan (100MB) like me. 100Mb is more than enought for me because in office&home and other places I use WiFi...

No "travlel via" or "avoid road" or "alternative route" options. It always tries to put me on M60 around junction 9 during rush hour. It's a no go zone at this time and there is no way to tell it to your google navigator.

Hi,
I just installed "NAVFREE".
I did not had a chance to proper test it just for a few miles. it is working but 'i did not liked the roots it took. just a bit of extra miles when rooting.
hope navigon will make a good version for SGN.
Navfree isn't great.. told me to take the 4th exit on a couple of roundabouts that only have 3 exits, and I needed the second :/

Try the free ones from MapQuest or Waze.
If you are following Sygic official tweeter, they said Sygic 4.0 will be released before the end of the year. It supports ICS.
In fact, you can go to their support forum to try the beta version.
I am using 3.0 version 11.2.2, it is a very good app. It has problem in the past with stability, but the latest version fixed it. Tested last weekend with 300 km driving, flawless.
Cant wait their ICS version!
It seems that Google decided recently to yank the +/- zoom buttons in the Navigation app that would appear briefly when you tapped the screen. This has made using the app much more of a pain for me because I frequently like to have the view slightly zoomed out so it would show road traffic conditions. The pinch method is not a suitable alternative because try as I might, I can't seem to find a way to do this while driving that doesn't "unhinge" the view from following my current position a large percentage of the time because the pinch motion must be completely equal between both fingers.
Am I missing a simple technique to do this?
And before it gets mentioned, the traffic button is not a direct replacement because it zooms WAY out, and I still want to see the close level of detail...

If you hit the menu button in maps, go into settings and choose labs. Inside, there is an option for zoom buttons. Enjoy.

Thanks, but that is ONLY for Maps. I'm talking about Navigation which is what I use in the car (whether I'm actually routing to an address or not). That is its own app that does not have this option unfortunately.
I have the same issue, you are not alone but it seems not many people used this feature I used it more to zoom out a level or 2 so I could overview of side roads in order to manually re-route when driving in congestion..and there's always damn congestion! Pinch zooming isn't practical while driving! Hope they return, but I fear the worst!
You try just tapping the screen to zoom?

Thanks, but that zooms in. If you read what I'm talking about- it's the ability to zoom OUT from the default zoom level. Try doing this while driving, keeping the view "stuck" to your current position, and see how it goes

I'm really surprised this isn't an issue for more people. Regardless, it's such a no brainer to me and unobtrusive to the people that don't care about it.
Feel free to star the bug report I just created to try to get google's attention. (I'm not too optimistic...)

Unfortunately no. The best I got was a response from a google employee on the support forums that they would forward my request to development. My fingers are crosssed it will make it's way into an update at some point, but who knows...
It was a frustrating exercise in finding the appropriate channels to get my voice heard. I didn't realize that there was no bug-tracking system for google apps, so the two attempts I made to create an actual bug were closed.
Thanks for the swift reply
It's a shame as it spoils the whole app for me.
