I used Unrevoked to root my girl's phone a few weeks ago, and it turned s-off. I would try running it again. Maybe one of the processes didn't go through properly. Both Unrevoked and Unrevoked Forever turn s-off, so I can't think of any good reason why it is still on.
I ttried that once and it says unsuccessful with an E msg. And says aborted or something. I don't remem er exactly. I will have to try again later. Should I undo what is done or just try it again?
I agree, just try it again. Sometimes it just may not work... I had to go through the process twice before mine worked and came back with it rooted.
You can use one of the following methods (assuming you are on 0.97).
[ROOT] ~~~ HTC EVO - Universal Auto Root ~~~ (updated for 2.02)(12/15/10) by xHausx or [TUTORIAL] How To Root The HTC EVO ~ Part-1 \0/ by toastcfh which is what I used.
I'm not dismissing xHausx or any of the automated system builders as they do fantastic work for us. However, I think I actually like the second method better for myself as it seems I am more in control.
If you need further information on rooting or other EVO information, the Wiki has great information.

Honestly, I'm not sure. Try it again first as is, and if that doesn't work, try reverting back to stock and doing the whole thing over.

Not yet. I didn't have much time when I tried unrevoked again. I will try one of tem next.
You need to use "Unrevoked Forever". Its the next link down on the download page.
I tried unrevoked 3 times. I'm rooted but I'm still s-on. So when i get a chance I'm going to try one of the suggested roots.
Auto root just keeps telling me no device is found. And I can't get the second one to let me inter commands. I haven't messed with it much. I have super user and I flashed cyanogen mod but I can't get it to go S-off.
HTC EVO 4G
Try unrooting completely, and then run unrevoked's program again (both forever and 3)
I'm not sure if this was the problem but I cleaned out my SD card and flashed unrevoked and it worked like a charm. I'm fully rooted now just to fine a cool rom. Thanks for the help.
JUST FLASH UNREVOKED FOREVER FROM RECOVERY!!! go to unrevoked.com, click on the big evo, hit unrevoked forever, search through the lengthy wiki for the file, download, and flash from recovery like a theme. will turn s-off for all hboots and radios, will even stick through a hboot upgrade/downgrade.
I Did! 6 times and the last time it worked!!!!!
My EVO can kick your EVO's A$$!

I BELIEVE this happened when people started installing the latest OTA. You have to use a different root method or RUU to get it to work...

Just go to the link / thread that Dredge posted for simple root. All you have to do is click and follow the instructions. Don't worry about about what files you have or don't have now. Even better delete the junk you previously loaded when trying to root. Simple root will get you Root access, unlock nand and flash the proper PC36IMG. I did it weeks ago before there was a version for gaining root post OTA. If you really really need help you can watch the steps on YouTube. Simpleroot method draws on methods used by others and makes it as automatic and hands off as possible.

I was in the same exact boat you were in, but have finally rooted it and have a custom rom and it is great.
Use simple root (it works) and follow the video steps as well, its like 20 minutes long, but it lets you know whats going on with your phone.
However I don't think you have achieved fool root status yet, because you need to NAND unlock ( i think that means full user permission)
You need to follow the steps on this page, and then you will be set to flash custom roms.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715915
What the "simple root" basically does is revert your phone back to 1.17.651.1 which makes the full nand unlock possible, then follow the steps on the link above after you have rooted with simple root, and you are good to go.
It is a really easy process, thanks to these guys and this website.
I have had trouble with this before but finally got it done, so if you need help message me or just post it up on here.

Can someone please explain clearly the difference between Unrevoked 3 (.22) and Unrevoked Forever (for EVO use).
I've read both Wiki's and it seems, for the EVO, that both permanently give root, unlock NAND, and s-off.
If I root with Unrevoked 3, what exactly would be the reasoning for flashing Forever?
Please answer specifically for EVO use.
Thanks

sent from my bad-ass EVO!
Unrevoked forever achieves S-OFF, which means, even if for some reason you become "unrooted" (such as accepting an OTA) you can always go to recovery and flash a rooted rom. S-OFF is a somewhat permanent NAND unlock.
Unrevoked 3.22 includes the forever flash after the root process, however, I have noticed sometimes it doesn't flash properly, so anyone using unrevoked 3.22, should verify they are S-OFF in bootloader. If you are still S-ON, then download and flash the unrevoked forever .zip until you get S-OFF.
Thanks, but its just hard for me to believe that the whole point of Forever is "just in case" you don't achieve s-off with 3.22. It has to do something extra right?
What is this stuff I've been reading that its not permanent... or is this just old info. When I read the 3.22 wiki it says that it "now" achieves root as of 3 whereas before it did not.

Well forever was released after other root methods. So people who rooted either manually or simple root or whatever.. won't have S-OFF, unrevoked were the first to come out with that, and the forever .zip download, lets those people have it too.
Old versions of unrevoked did not reach permanent nand unlock so you'll read a lot of old stuff about how unrevoked isn't a "full root", but now with forever, it does.
Ok, so by rooting with Unrevoked 3 I don't need to flash Unrevoked Forever, right? Because now with version 3 I achieve the same things that Forever does??...
Is this correct.

In theory yes, as I stated, unrevoked 3.xx has included the forever flash, but you just need to double check that it all went through, there have been many reports (in the IRC chan, and my own experience with a replacement EVO) that people are rooted but not S-OFF after finishing unrevoked 3.xx.

As above.
op-put simply, do the unrevoked3.xx to root your phone. if you get s-off in the process then good no need to do anything else. if you still got s-on then you need to run unrevoked forever. simple as that. just because it worked for someone else does not mean that it will work for you. just do it and then verify it is nand unlock.
OK, just rooted my EVO for the 2nd time ever. Went pretty easy. However, I was using Ubuntu 10.10 64bit and it took a minute to figure out how to run the reflash program as a root user. I did get some errors about the radio not being supported and update failed. After a reboot I noticed that I did not have s-off but did have the ClockworkMOD recovery and the superUser Permission app. So, I ran unrevoked forever and viola I now have s-off (and the unrevoked splash screen). I see now why this is useful, just wondering why I had errors with my radio version.
Code:
unrEVOked forever S-OFF patch v1.1

Using the engineering bootloader, like simple root did, has unlocked the NAND (s-off) since day one. Unrevoked just figured out a way to do it with other bootloader versions
Even more questions of whether I'm truly rooted or not...
First time posting although I've been lurking for quite a while so hopefully I don't get flamed out of here on my first attempt.
First I did root my Evo using unrevoked 3, all seemed to go well and correctly as I ended up with S-OFF, superuser app, etc. I created a backup and everything, (still running stock Sense ROM.) Do I need to try using Unrevoked Forever now?
I started reading posts about backing up RSA keys and WiMAX partitions etc and when I connected the phone (yes usb debugging and charge only); opened a command prompt and browsed to the ADB directory I never get the # confirming I have root access. (I only get the $)
Now from what I'm reading Clockwork mod backs up the WiMax anyway but I still wanted to walk through the process to get more familiar with it. I guess my first question is do I really need to back up the partition and keys if I have a successful nandroid backup?
Also I installed root check and the under the basic setting it said I had no root access, and then under the advanced setting it said I did.
I tried installing Ti backup and clicking under problems to install busy box thinking that may be the problem, but I don't see the setting it describes there where I can change to install busybox.
Finally I also downloaded the busybox installer. It gives two options of where to install it in either /system/bin/, or /system/xbin/....does it matter? Will installing it this way be ok or do I need to push through ADB? If I need to push through ADB then obviously I need to get my # root access figured out.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can try and help me make heads or tails of this situation.

So I first followed these instructions to use Unrevoked to root my girlfriend's new phone, as this was how I rooted my phone:
http://theunlockr.com/2010/07/20/how-to-root-the-htc-evo-4g-unrevoked-method/
Unrevoked said it was triumphant, but when I rebooted into my bootloader, and selected fastboot -> recovery I just got a black screen with a red triangle. Apparently, there's no nandroid loaded on my phone.
So I proceeded to follow Toast's 2 part guide here:
Part 1: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=718889
Part 2: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=701835
Apprehensive about not being able to perform a nandroid backup, I proceeded anyways, but when I tried to create /data/flash_image I received an error: permission denied. So I'm positive I don't have root either.
So I went to this tutorial believing that I probably had a newer version (even though my notification bar is telling me I need to download the mandatory update) and followed these directions:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=718889
I repeated my previous steps, but was still no closer. Finally, I went to these directions:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=690762
but when I tried to update using the pc36img file, after it finished checking the file it said "Main version is older! Update fail! Do you want to reboot device?"
So I'm pretty much stuck. What can/should I do?

Pretty much what this guy said.
You're going to need to use the new method for the 2.02 HBOOT since S-ON is present. If S-OFF was present you'd obviously be ready to go to flash a custom recovery and flash your ROM of choice.
Here's a guide to get your S-OFF with 2.02, follow it to the "T": http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829045
Once you've got S-OFF and a custom recovery loaded, you'll just have to flash a ROM. Personally, I'd recommend Myn's Warm 2.2 RLS4. It's the fastest ROM I've used and looks/works the best, imo.

Bad luck you wrote the wrong root method on a new females phone. >_<
Make sure you find out the Hboot version and the S-OFF has to be there for your phone to be flashed with a new rom / kernel for use.
What everyone said, but in case you don't know. To check your Hboot version boot to the bootloader (power on + vol down) to check your version.

This is what I needed, thanks. Sorry, but it had been since the EVO launched since the last time I had to unlock one, sorry I wasn't completely versed in the nuances of hboot versions and the appearance of S-On. I'm glad someone was nice enough to simply post the correct guide.
I've searched the forums and have not found a situation that really matches mine.
I've been running on a Cyanogen nightly build for probably two months with no problems. Out of nowhere this morning my phone reboots itself (while it was idle; I wasn't even touching it) and then gets stuck in a boot loop. I get the White HTC Evo 4G screen, then it powers off and comes back up to the white screen again. Over and over.
All I can get do is hboot. Even telling hboot to go into the recovery mode puts my back into the boot loop. Fastboot, clear storage, and hboot usb all seem to work though. I've tried downloading the PC36IMG.zip file (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=780141) in that thread, but hboot loads it and tells me that it is older than my current version, and only gives me the option to reboot, or not to reboot. Doesn't load the image.

No, the app on the PC said everything was successful. The progress bar on the phone progressed without errors too.

Just the HTC EVO 4G splash screen. Over and over and over...

I asked my wife to check this thread from the car on the way to dinner. Saw the response. So I took my laptop inside with us and used the RUU one more time. No luck. I decided that it must be a hardware issue. I took the SD out and removed the evidence that the phone had been rooted, then took it to the sprint service center up the road. They just replaced it for me. Thanks for your time! I DO want to root my phone again, the ROMs are just so much better than the stock installation. Should I not install the OTA updates if I'm going to root it? Which guide should I follow for rooting?

Same deal.
Here is the post that I put in the wrong forum that I was about to post here until I saw this thread...
Wellp. I win.
I win a no expenses paid trip to my nearest Sprint dealer.
Ever since I used unrevoked to root my phone in November, I've been voraciously digging through these forums for tasty roms. I've been snorting lines of Cyanogen, MIUI, and a myriad of other, well-designed roms.
Using a on older version of hboot (pre 1 methinks) I was able to avoid the latest hassles with ClockworkMod (plus, I down(up?)graded to 2.6 via RomManager).
Tonight, as I was enjoying some tasty foodstuffs at my local foodstuff vendor, my phone rebooted. Then, it rebooted again. Then again. I once made the folly of flashing a new rom without running the appropriate wipes, and was no stranger to the bootloop. I patiently fired up hboot (my poor volume rocker is all but wore out) and ordered up the trusty recovery mode.
...then it rebooted again... and again... and again.

Fastboot gave some wacky error message when I tried to flash a new recovery, and installing via PC36IMG.zip did nothing to improve the situation. I even went so far as to install a stock image someone pulled from an RUU (with a 2.02hboot, so as to avoid wimax woes)...
Still, a whole lotta nothing. I can't do anything beyond hboot, and whatever recovery image I install (Clockworkmod, AmanRa) the machine still bootloops.
At this juncture, I've resigned to taking the phone into the sprint store and playing dumb. It is a stock rom, though I hope the attendant misses the S-OFF bit at boot. Which brings me to my proper question:
1) Has anyone run aground a similar issue and found a way out?
OR...
2) Anyone know how to turn S-(back)ON in my current situation?
Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Also, you can rest assured that I'll be rooting again whatever phone I walk away with, and the work that is exhibited in these forums is amazing. Keep churning out wonderful roms and guides.

Ack, sorry... didn't mention in previous post. I fired up windows to run the RUU (I don't trust wine to that stuff) but it couldn't detect the device.
Well i've been working for the past 9 hours trying ever possible thing i could find trying to fix my issue without any progress. How do i get back to stock so i can start over?!

I was rooted with unrevoked after reverting back from the newest OTA using a guide from the XDA forums. everything was working wonderfully but my dumbass had to try and downgrade to an ancient ENG Hboot. using thefredelement's guide to get back to ENG .76. NOT NOTICING i shouldn't try it with HW version 003/004. unfortunately my phone is HW 003. idk what i need to do to get this fixed or if i bricked my phone. I've got a warranty still so i can always just report it lost pay the 50 and restore from my backup sd card.
anyways, my computer is able to see my phone with fastboot but not adb. i get errors when trying to flash new recoveries or anything but radios (such as fail PU, image update error, data length too large, etc) Trying to do anything with adb shell just says "device not found" (yes, i have the correct drivers installed) I CANNOT get into recovery (i had CWM 5.0.2.2) it just reboots back to hboot or the screen with the three droids skateboarding when i try. sorry ahead of time if this is posted in the wrong section/i just killed some brain cells with my stupidity and lack of experience. thanks in advance for any help and advice i can get! (sorry for the double post, idk how to delete postings)

Remain calm. Let's see if we can get you fully functional.
First, let's upgrade that HBOOT. That by itself might fix you up, if it'll flash through the bootloader. Try the PC36IMG.zip attached to this post. It's for HBOOT 2.15.
If it flashes successfully, it should reboot the bootloader for you. If it doesn't, choose the fastboot option that does, and when it comes back up, try getting into recovery. If you can get into recovery, the next thing you should do is retire CWM and flash RA-supersonic.
thx capt. I actually just filed a clain through asurion, and for my $100 deductible i've getting a brand new evo3d xD so jumping the gun for the replacement actually worked out for me this time!

A shame to send back a perfectly fine OG . But I'm glad it worked out for you. Personally I like the challenge of trying to rescue a soft-bricked device. But I guess we'll never know if it was possible, now . . .
i would have loved to have found out myself. but being on probation and in the process of finding a job I just didnt have the time to mess with it i've still got it so once i get some time i'm going to attempt to unbrick it still. although its useless now that it's been deactivated lol
