HTC Desire - Hard Reset when USB Unplugged (Mains Charger Only) - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey,
Wondering if anyone has come across this problem before... whenever I plug my phone into the mains charger it charges fine but when I unplug it, it causes the phone to hard reset. If it's charging from USB on my laptop then the phone does not reset. It doesn't appear to be ROM related or charger related as I've tried two chargers and it occurs on both DeFrost and Oxygen.
Only things I can think of at present are a recent Radio Update, AlphaRev S-OFF and N1 Boot Table (or a hardware fault). Anyone have any ideas?
Mike

maybe it is a battery issue. before excluding, you can try with another battery. after that you can always try official rom to exclude hardware and in the end if it actually is hardware you can take back for warranty,

Thanks,
Just identified the RUU I need to bring it back to stock, was wondering if you could answer a quick question on that though. As I've done S-OFF and installed the N1-Boot Table, will I need to manually switch the N1-Boot back to normal boot table?
Pretty sure the S-OFF will revert back to S-ON when I flash the RUU although please correct me if I'm wrong.
Thanks again!

yes you rather do it manually before proceeding because actually it will fail if you don't do so. N1 table is to small for sense roms either way. as you have done it already it is really easy to do so. just double check MD5SUM.
i included a really small file to check MD5SUM in windows.

i think you will get it now

Any update on this issue? My desire has started doing the same thing, reboot when unplug from mains charger
I also have S-OFF with n1 table, can anyone help fix this problem?

I've had a similar issue, can't say if it will happen to you, but shortly after my desire started rebooting when i unplugged it, it developed more serious problems.
E.G. bluetooth wouldn't work and I couldn't connect the USB to mount the SD Card to a PC
I had S-OFF but with the default partition layout.
I'd say it's a hardware fault, but thats just me.
I managed to update my Desire to the latest RUU and have sent it in for repairs, should get it back later this week.
Finally, what recovery are you using?

Actually, i think I solved the problem, it appears it was caused by a bad flash, which led to the USB-BRICK, which has been mentioned elsewhere on the forums (i just hadn't actually tried to mount sd-card over USB)
Anyway I followed the instructions to fix the USB-BRICK (i.e. flashing misc mtd0.img) and now my charger is working fine again, so glad I didn't have to send my desire off for repair.
btw. I am using CWM recovery

Major Issues, need help please.

Hi all, I’m having a major issue.
ROM is CyanogenMod 6.0.1
S-Off
Radio 2.15.00.07.28
I left Dinc in a hot car, direct Sunlight, 100 degrees, 8 hours, on the charger.
When I returned to my car, I had an orange LED and non-responsive phone.
I pulled Battery and held the phone to the A/C for a few minutes and powered it on, the phone entered a reboot cycle. Pulled battery and drove home.
Once home, I booted into recovery and reverted to my last backup. When I booted the phone, it locked wile mounting SD Card. Pulled Battery and booted into recovery, cleared cache. Boot into “Getting Started”, locked up. Next I did a factory reset.
The phone seems operational and stable at this time, but I have yet to sync or try to restore my Titanium backup. As a matter of fact, I’m thinking I may go back to stock Sense. I haven’t seen the 2.2 update, and the blogs are full of reports of things to come. I don’t want to give up Root…
… as I was just researching going back to the stock ROM / Radio I noticed my phone was locked up. So now I turn to you guys...
Help?
Well if your able to get it to boot then Its not completely bricked thankfully.
Also since your S-off You can flash the 2.2 RUU. Once that is done you can then run Unrevoked 3.21 and get root again.
I do worry about your phone locking up though. What hboot version do you have?
You should have
Hboot Version: 0.92.0000
I ask as if you don't already have this then you will end up being flashed with the RUU. I would hate to see your phone lock up while flashing the Hboot as that would be instant brick.
Also your phone may be damaged from being in the heat like that. I know my phone gets stupid hot when plugged into a car charger and have had that blinking orange light. If running the RUU does not resolve the issue of the phone locking up then you're going to have to call your carrier and possible get them to replace it.
Baseband is 2.15.00.07.28
But HBOOT is 0.79.0000
I begining to think the issue is the SDCard but I have loaded it on my PC and it appears fine.
Try running the phone with a different SD card for a while and see if it still locks up.
If you run the RUU your going to be updated to Hboot 0.92.0000 but as stated in my reply above I would hate to see it lock up while flashing this.
Okay, let me see if I can find the 2.2 RUU and a install guide. I have the 2 gig SD card that came with the phone someplace...

I would recommend reformatting the 2GB SanDisk card to the FAT32 format before using it too (no idea why it's just FAT by default). Probably wouldn't make a difference in what you are doing, but it was a hang up for me when trying to upgrade manually from 2.1-update1 to 2.2.
Okay, downloaded the RUU and HTC Sync.
Installed HTC Sync
Connected the phone over USB and ran the RUU.
Wile the RUU was running, an additional driver installed, and required a reboot. RUU error out with "Unable to communicate with the device"
Pulled battery from the phone, restarted the computer.
RUU can not connect.
Uninstall HTC Sync, reinstalled HTC Sync. Reconnected phone, ran the RUU... same thing... driver starts installing mid way through, request a reboot of my windows box, RUU reports unable to communicate.
Any ideas?
Got it... I know you guys where freaking out as much as I was.
I had to change the driver for the boot loader... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=776056

[Q] [Problem] Reboots after disconnecting phone from charger/USB

Hey guys,
I have a very annoying and reproducible problem with my Desire. Everytime I connect the phone via USB (no matter if dock, laptop, wall) it reboots ~2 seconds after removing the USB cable from the phone.
I have had this problem for about 2 weeks now, across 4 or 5 Custom Roms (Sense and Non-Sense) and right now I am on CM6.1 Nightly 214.
It just annoys the crap out of me, for example when I got the Desire in the dock next to my desk and I receive a call, I can only accept the call handsfree, because removing it from the dock would cause a reboot and I would lose the call...
Please give me some kinda advice, I just flashed the latest radio and it worked twice without rebooting and now I'm back to square 1.
All the best,
Paul
Sounds like a faulty battery or some kind of defect at the power supply.
I suggest you try this with another battery, maybe from a friend.
You should check the usb connector on the phone too for some sort of deformation or smudge.
I thought that it could be the usb cable you are using, but since it does the same with the dock, it's not it.
The easiest and the most not likely way to fix it is with the calibration of the battery, if you have luck maybe it's just the OS that errs.
Thanks for your thoughts on my problem. Right now I am waiting for an important call but I got a spare battery from a friend of mine already and will later check and see if the problem occurs with the spare battery as well.
But the other point you mentioned was a calibration of the battery: how exactly do I do that? Just AmonRA Wipe Battery Stats or are you talking about another method?
Cheers for the advice!
this is for the calibration of your battery.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=755903
Hi, hope it works with the other battery, otherwise you'll have to send it for repair.
The battery thing I mentioned, has a minimal chance of working, but at least when I am desperate I try things that have even the smallest chance of fixing it. So in essence the process is: charge untill full when powered on; disconnect charger (which will automatically reboot your phone in your case);
don't let it boot, enter hboot for example and turn it off; then charge till full again; now boot into recovery wipe stats; and finally just boot into android.
Another thing worth checking I think is the pins where the battery connects to the phone, they should look clean (I wipe pins with rubber for a pencil) and intact.
Edit:Well seems like Marios already posted a link but mine is specific for your situation
did you solve the problem?
i have the same thing... very strange.
calibrating the battery didn't help.
No, I still haven't found a solution. Strangely though, it doesn't reboot anymore if I charge it via USB on my laptop. On my desktop and via the wall charger it still reboots every time I unplug it. Sorry I can't be of more help
my phone reboots when disconnecting from my laptop too.
even when in recovery, very strange...
have you tried to try the unbricking process with the misc.img?
Actually, I haven't tried that one. Can you give me a link to what you're talking about?
IT WORKED!
http://android.modaco.com/content/h...com/309939/usb-brick-rickrolled-b0rked-fixed/
just flashed the update.zip and i can copy the files to/from my laptop using the usb cable.
and it doesn't reboot when unpluging too
Got the same issue, tried modaco´s workaround, same thing... it started happening after i flashed CWM3.0x wich reovery do u use?
gonna try flashing Ra again and see what happens....
Solved It
Like i said, happened after flashing cw3.x finnaly i got home, flashed RA-desire-v2.0.0-CM again, then flashed update.zip from modaco´s thread, and for now it stoped....
just gonna see what happens when the battery get fully charged....
EDIT: Fully charged 4192mV removed it, and.... nothing happened...
Unfortunately it didn't work for me. Now my phone freezes every now and then when I unplug it
EDIT: IT WORKED, IT WORKED!!!
congrats

NICE....
How did u solved it, u never know.....
I tried all things listed in this thread and some more, too.
But, it still reboots when removing from power supply (pc connection works now).
Perhaps you tried some things not listed here?
I am not sure when the problem started for me.
I installed cm7 nightlies with no reboot-problem, also switched from alpharev1.5 to alpharev1.8 and from cwm2 to cwm3.
All in a few days.
Somewhere along these days the problem appeared.
Btw.:
I got reboots on both kinds of usb connections (PC/power supply).
Debugging connection (adb, fastboot) worked.
Accessing the phone as usb storage device worked, too.
So this may be a little bit different from the cases described in the thread.
To solve the issue, I tried several things:
First I restored older backups (versions of cm7) with no success.
Then I restored my last backup of cm6 nightly from just before cm7, and it didn't work either.
As I was 100% sure that this worked before, I now concentrated on the remaining parts, recovery and boot loader.
So I first tried downgrading to clockworkmod2.
Then I tried updating to a newer alpharev1.8 (as it was a little bit newer than my installed version).
After finding this thread, I became a little happier again...
I applied the fastboot oem ... thingy (hmm, what does it do exactly?).
Then I calibrated my battery, which seemed to work well, as it shows 99% now, which it didn't before.
And at the end I installed the fixmisc-update.zip as linked above.
Between each step I checked if the issue disappeared.
Nothing of those steps completely solved the problem.
However, when disconnecting from PC, the reboots don't appear anymore, so at least something has changed.
So, powlemann, ferreinf and others being successful with the steps above, which configurations do you use now?
Can you tell me which change solved the issue for you?
Do you use alpharev1.5 or 1.8 (and the later from which date) or none of them?
Did you install cwm3 again after solving the problem and did the problem re-appear?
Good News for you, hg42!
I am 99% sure you can fix the problem when first flashing AmonRA recovery and then do Mocados Usb Brick rickrolled.
Do you know how to flash a different recovery?
I fixed it with modaco's zip, that was very annoying!!

USB Issues

I was running Leedroid on my Desire and all was fine.
I seen these Sense 2.1+3.0 ROMS and decided to give one a go.
I tried to get into recovery before doing anything to take a NAND Backup, but it just refused to go into recovery. I finally got it in there and tried to apply to update.zip but it kept saying something could not be found, I forgot what, and failed after 10 tries.
I booted mu phone up and I'd lost all my data. It's like the phone had been wiped.
I tried reseating the SD Card and checking it was all ok, but then I got stuck in a bootloop. In the mean time, my Alienware Laptop decided to die, followed by my backup Dell laptop! lol
I messed around for ages trying to get various things to work, but couldn't do it. In the end, I downloaded the old root method and flashed Cyanomod 7 which seemed to work and I got it booted, but I couldn't mount the SD card and it would rarely pick up that the USB was connected.
I then flashed AceSMod007 which also seemed to go well minus 2 things.
The first, Text messages seem to show my contacts picture, but also it only shows their Number rather than the contact name. This is VERY annoying and I can't find a way to resolve it.
The second issue, and possibly the most worrying is that it won't pick up USB connection AT ALL. This includes when it's plugged into the Wall to charge.
I tried the USB Brick fix, but that didn't work at all.
I shutdown the phone, removed the battery, plugged in the charger, inserted the battery and booted up the phone and it started charging, but as soon as I unplugged the charger and put it in again, same problem.
I'm currently trying another ROM to see if that resolves the issue, but I suspect that it won't tbh.
Has anyone came across this before and/or knows how to fix it?
Other things I've tried:
Wiping all data, cache and Battery data.
Using different USB cables
Thanks
UPDATE:
Flashing a different ROM didn't seem to resolve it.
Quick update.
I flashed Insertcoin rom onto the phone and it's resolved my text message issue.
Also, when I plugged the phone into the PC, it didn't give me any options for mount SD or anything like that, but said it was charging. However, an hour later and the battery had only gone down.
Since charging by USB has always been slow for me, I plugged in into the wall socket for an hour but it wouldn't pick up that I'd plugged it in. I turned the phone off and I got the LED to say it's charging.
Left it, then booted it up and still has the same battery level.
I don't expect it's the battery otherwise it would pick up fine when plugging into the PC.
Could be an usb brick:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=691639
Cheers mate, but as I mentioned, I've tried the USB Brick fix a couple of times and still experiencing the same issues.
Can you switch on blue tooth? Does it stay on?
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA Premium App
Actually, no. Its says Turning On... Then just goes back to off.
you DO have USB-Brick
you gotta fix it
if S-OFF do:
fastboot oem enable qxdm 0
fastboot oem eraseconfig
if S-ON there are a few threads on xda on how-to do it, if you still get no USB-connectivity you just didnt do it right
good luck
Ah, I did try it a few times. I'll just keep trying then.
Cheers
Are you S-Off or S-On and are you still ROOTED?
This thread for USB Brick
See for my post here
if you are S-off or tried to flash a RUU and lost ROOT!
This thread has a flasher with built in USB Brick fix
I'd already followed the USB Brick guide and it didn't help.
Now, is I were to have missed the step that says to run '/data/flash_image misc /data/mtd0.img', I'd be a bit of a tit.
So let's just say that I tried the guide again and now I have full USB functionality back
I was going to S-OFF my phone, but I'll hopefully get a Sensation soon and I don't want to fubar anything in the mean time.
Thanks for the help and pointers though guys. It's nice to be a member of some forums that aren't full of people who want to cry at you for not understanding everything 100%.
Cheers again
just use the thanks button
glad we (or at least I) could help.

[Q] [HELP] Desire messed up after alpharev

Hi there,
I had a very nice trip with my rooted desire with a miui rom on it for now maybe, 1 year smthg.
Recently, i bought a new µSD and wanted to prepare it for my phone ; i downloaded rom manager, and tried the "partition SD" functionality, which told me that i would have to update my clockworkmod, which i tried with the "update recovery" in it, which failed.
After a while, i found that i forgot to S-OFF my phone, and that was the reason why i couldn't update the recovery. So i decided to S-OFF. Unfortunately, my phone didn't went to the last step, and stayed stuck at the boot screen until its battery died, maybe an hour after.
I began a long journey trying to figure out if my phone was bricked or not, since i wasn't able to boot it up ; only the hboot was responding. I tried MANY ways, MANY posts, i tried to flash with a nand backup without success ('access denied'), i tried to flash just the recovery (same or 'signature failed'). I tried to put a PB99IMG.zip file from alpharev into my phone without any success...
BUT. I succeed in recovering my phone with putting a stock PB99IMG.zip from shipped-roms and it boots up very well on a crappy sense rom.
From that, i tried hard to root it again since i want to try again to S-OFF it, and after that, return back to my beloved miui rom. I'm stuck because of a mysterious problem into my phone. It looks like it doesn't like the third step which (i guess) requires a boot script. So nothing happens to it, it freezes to the bootscreen, while unrevoked says "waiting for reboot..." endlessly.
I succeeded once (only) in passing this step, but then unrevoked said to me something like : "Internal error: failed to unlock NAND flash?" which seems crazy since i'm in a 0.93 HBOOT (since the RUU reset). I hadn't any Superuser app nor signs of rooting ("su" command failed in terminal).
For now, i'm trying to root it via the Visionary app, but i don't think it will work.
If anyone has any suggestion in making things better, i'll be pleased to hear !
PS : I'm writing this post because i feel it could be full of useful infos for anyone else stuck with a "bricked" phone.
use this guide to S-OFF, install custom recovery and root.
read all the instructions, several times.
oh and rom manager is often not recommended for this phone as it can often cause usb bricks. once s-off you can flash different recoveries via fastboot or android flasher.
use gparted or 4EXT recovery to partition your sd card.
Unfortunately, it seems like the time for me to change phone has come.
While i was doing an other time a RUU reset because of loopboot created by an unrevoked related bug, my phone decided to stop, and die. The battery is still charged — i can feel the fuzz with putting my tongue on it — but the phone just doesn't turn on ; it doesn't show the charging led when i put it on charge...
I'm currently looking for an other device, such as the Desire S (because of the size, mainly ; others blockbusters are too big)
If someone has an idea to make my Desire turn on again, anything i can do, i will do.
Thx for the answer, the guide link, and all !

don't just go flashing RUU's randomly, you may get amoled/slcd incompatibility for instance, which is what this might be.
try reading the troubleshooting guide, you can probably save your phone.
read carefully before you do anything in future...this situation could probably have been avoided
Thanks a lot again
I should be more patient when trying to do things, but it's kinda annoying not to have it working...
Btw, i wasn't acting *that* randomly (at least, for me) : since anytime i was using unrevoked was blocking the phone onto the boot screen, the only way i found to restore it was flashing it again. But yeah, maybe it was done too randomly though...
The guide you gave me is full of good advices, but the only thing that could be matching for my case is a bad RUU flashing ; this doesnt look to be my case, since even if i put my phone on charge, the charging led doesn't turn on. The phone doesn't warm after pressing the power button... It looks like there's something related to electricity inside that have been broken somewhere... Don't you think so ?
[EDIT] I found some guys having my (new) problem here : http://www.htcdesireforum.com/htc-d...h-on-or-respond-to-a-charger-what's-happened/ I'm quite relax since it's not a "0day" problem : lots of people are talking about it, so i have some solutions : wait and pray, if not, try another battery, or let it dead.

that problem sounds different as that was posted ages ago, and they weren't messing around with rooting and RUUs...
i don't think you should 'wait and pray, try another battery, or let it dead'
can you get to recovery/bootloader/fastboot at all? please post more details. if you can then it's probably not bricked.
i'm unsure of whether you've actually tried anything in the troubleshooting guide. try [2] advanced boot problems, S-ON. create a goldcard and try the WWE RUU
if none of it makes sense ask directly in that thread
and if you get the RUU to boot, don't use unrevoked...follow my 1st reply...
I stopped all the things i was doing when i had your reply, trust me !
As i said, i can't get the device to be powered on ; since, i'm not able to have any access to hboot, fastboot, nor adb. The phone does not charge when plugged to a charger neither to a computer. The led stays black, and the battery doesn't get warm (which normally does when charging).
Since the phone doesn't turn on, the guide you gave me is useless (but i learnt a lot from it, so thanks for that). The only section which *could* have been useful was the one talking about wrong RUU flashing with SLCD off ; but since my screen was working, and the symptoms are different (my phone is not recognized by the computer), this is not describing my problem definitly.
Be sure that if i can boot that phone once again, i'll follow your 1st reply and won't use unrevoked on it ever...
I'm trying now to find an other battery, to know which from the battery xor the mobo of the phone is dead. If battery, i'll just buy a new one ; if mobo, i'll buy a Desire S, since my phone reached the warranty limit, and i would have to pay to repair it...

[Q] Desire wont charge , works on mains

I am having a really weird problem with my HTC Desire
It wont charge although sometimes it does.
if I plug it into the mains it may charge but only up to a maximum of 21% and then whilst still plugged into the mains it will discharge (while it is discharging the orange led is on solid as if it is charging)
If the battery reaches 0% the phone stays on when plugged into the mains.
I have the original battery and a new one i bought off ebay about 3 months ago. I dont think its the batteries as the exact same fault is happening on both.
I have also tried 2 different mains charges and usb charging,
This all seemed to start after i s-offed the phone and installed the lastest ICS Sanvold 0.7 ROM (which i found a bit too unstable) so I installed CyanogenMod CM7 Official (this is when i noticed the battery charging problem). Thinking it might be ROM related i installed the Oxygen 2.3.2 ROM which is one i used to use a while ago but I am still getting the charging problem, so i guess its not that.
Anyone got any idea? i still like my desire but i cant go on much longer like this and might just have to splash the cash and get a new phone.
I think the only way i can get it to charge is just to leave it charging for hours or switch the phone off and charge it upm but again it never goes above 21%
I have done the reset battery stats in ClockworkMod
Im running
-Revolutionary-
BRAVO PVT1 SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT-6.93.1002
RADIO-5.17.05.23
and
Revolutionary CWM v4.0.1.4
Any ideas?
Can you try a different usb cable? I had a similar problem with a damaged one where the connector was broken.
Get back to S-ON and install the official RUU for your phone. See if the issue persists.
That test would demonstrate whether it's a hardware or software issue, and from then on, you can make your own conclusion.

Do i need to go back to s-on before i can reload an offical RUU?
I just tried to run the official ruu there but it told me i need 30% battery but unfortunately i can only power the battery to 21%
You don't need to S ON, but that would be the most efficient way to get it back to "Default"
The RUU from within windows gives a battery error? Try extracting the rom.zip from it and do the PM99IMG.zip flashing. Don't quote me on this, but it may bypass that error.

Section "[7]: RUU WITHOUT USB CONNECTION"
cheers
I managed to do what you mentioned above but all it did was downgrade the bootloader to s-on hboot 0.80.0000 , it failed on the rest ie downgrading to stock rom files etc
It wouldn't boot either but i did manage to get into recovery and flash a CM7 rom zip file i still had on the SD card, so i managed to get that on and the phone booted.
Is there anyway i can go back to stock using Recovery?
In the RUU Stock Rom.zip file there are loads of .img files, can i manually flash these somehow?
My phone is now up to 24% but wont go any higher
Yeah those .img files can be loaded with fastboot
"fastboot flash system system.img"
then do a delete user data from the recovery..
did you try another battery by the way?
