Home screen reboots after returning to it or pressing home button - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Lately everytime I pressed the home button or returned to the home screen the home screen reboots with a "Loading..." box and no inputs are accepted except dragging down the notification bar. Any ideas? Memory issues?
I've tried uninstalling a few apps to free up some memory, but nothing seems to really work. Also checked if my task killer was "killing" the home screen in some way but didn't see anything wrong there.
Currently running LeeDroid 2.2f Desire GSM
Any help would be appreciated!

Ideas anyone??

Boot in safe mode and see if it happens again.
If it doesn't it's a third party process that is causing it.
If it does, you'll probably need to reflash, but first you may try to erase cache and data of the "htc sense" system process.

By "safe mode" do you mean recovery or bootloader or what is safe mode?
Tried clearing data on HTC Sense process but all it did was erase my home screens, still has to reload the sense UI everytime I exit a full screen app.
I guess I'll try to reflash sometime, maybe I'll give cyanogen a try.

To enter safe mode you need to power on your device while holding the menu button till the home screen shows up.

Are you rooted? Try clearing cache and dalvik cache? I used to have that problem and clearing the caches helped (I have sense moved on to other roms though)

Tried safe mode and cleared both caches no apparent difference.
Will try updating to Cyanogen and see if the problem is persistent. Will update with how this goes!

Let me know how this goes, I recently flashed LeeDroid 2.2f and started to experience the exact same problem.
Flashed to 2.3b yesterday, so far no homescreen problems but we'll see how it goes.

Just flashed most recent Cyanogen, S-OFF, custom MTD partition, Firerat's a2sd, with launcher pro plus and quickdesk.
No more homescreen reloads!
But I must say this is the best configuration I've used thus far! Love the Cyanogen features compared to the more simple LeeDroid feature list and I can configure launcher pro to work the same as Sense but better. also have a lot more space for apps as well.
For those who dont know what quickdesk is TRY IT. IT IS AWESOME. Works swimmingly with any homescreen launcher.

Hmm, might give it a try then!
Is that Cyanogen or DeFroST?#
Cheers.

Cyanogen. I don't see anything in the features list in DeFroST that Cyanogen doesn't already have.

blank screen - Launcher not resopnding

Hi all,
For past few days i have been getting the strange issue. When i turn on my phone nothing would come and only black screen would show up. Then after few seconds i get message saying "launcher is not responding"...
I have tried both stock and nova launcher but same issue. I reflashed stock rom again and still same problem.
My Rom: ICS 4.0.2 Stock and stock kernel.
I want to keep stock rom so what is the solution? Why does this happen? Thanks

did you at any point between flashes, factory reseted the device?
did you try clearing app data/cache?
concerning nova launcher, you should post this under its related thread
concerning stock launcher, you should try and reach [email protected] groups
people flash all kinds of stuff but one ANR (application not responding) comes along and all hell breaks loose. get adb logcat when you're booting up/entering Android UI.
i can't wipe data or cache as i have stock recovery.I don't have CWM. i will upload the logcat soon. Thanks

if you press up (or up+power) on stock recovery, it will give you a recovery menu if i'm not mistaken (i may not recall it correctly).
and i was talking about the app data/cache that you clear in Settings > Apps as well, not just the ones in recovery.

Here is the Logcat. I already wiped everything when i flashed stock rom 4.0.2 with XXKK6.
Launcher not Responding
I'm getting a similar problem with my new Galaxy Nexus. I'm running stock ICS 4.0.1, kernel 3.0.1 on the bell mobility network. I've installed a few apps, but nothing which seems too unpopular. Here is the list I had installed when the launcher was performing flawlessly:
Swype Keyboard
Draw Free
Bell Mobile TV
Volume+
Here's what I've installed recently since launcher has become unstable:
Flashlight v. 1.3.0
Skype
StumbleUpon
TED
Sudoku Free
Here's whats been installed since:
Tip n Split
Antivirus Free
RealCalc
Quite regularly I am getting the "Launcher is not responding" message with a request to wait, report, or close the launcher. The home screen will lock up temporarily and none of the buttons will become usable. I've checked the ram usage, and it is holding at around 400mb. Clearing a bunch of apps from the cache or running screen does not change the frequency of freezes. I have also tried resetting the Nexus to factory defaults without any new apps, but it only took about an hour before I got the 'Launcher is not responding' message.
Anyone have any ideas for re-stabilizing ICS?
Thanks!
There is a part in the logcat talking about a channel that is unrecoverably broken... seems 1 of the fc's, power outage or something else left a file half written in your system.
Try performing a factory reset (which will wipe all userdata and give you a clean system)
if this doesn't work and you've had your phone unlocked reflash the system, boot and recovery again (using fastboot) (how to do that is explained here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1391881 )
If you have not tempered wit the system in any way (not rooted, no custom roms and no custom recovery) send it back to the store and get it fixed under warranty. When you can't or don't want to contact your seller proceed with reflashing your system at your own risk.

Everything force closes.

Using Titanium backup I removed Voice command and installed s voice and started playing around with it working flawlessly. I went to market and started updating my apps (Just got the phone a few days ago) and tried to take a screenshot. I forgot what the command was (Power and home?) and I held power too long not knowing it's a force restart, and my phone well, restarted.... I turned it back on and it got stuck at the samsung loading bar screen and it hung with a small chunk left. Thinking something was wrong I rebooted into recover and wiped Cache. Phone booted fine but I couldn't reset my clock settings via No-frills. It said it stuck but I didn't see a change. Next thing I know everything was force closing including process.acore.
Restarted again and same thing, it got stuck at the loading bar, so this time I wiped cache and Dcache and it hung for a little, but finally finshed and rebooted, only this time it keeps saying "Unfortnately, Swype has stopped." and I can't switch keyboards.
Stock JB TouchWiz with root using TWRP. Pretty much barebones stock rom with a few safe apps disabled and the one Voice Command removed.
Help?
Which version of TWRP? 2.5.0, 2.4.4, etc. For me to get the JB roms working I had to use thederekjay's Darkside cache wipe after install. No problems since then. You can find his super wipe and cache wipe on the interwebs, he isn't hosting them on xda anymore.
2.4.4, I was unaware there was a more recent version.
This time I tried fixing permissions and still, swype is unresponsive and keeps crashing. Could you maybe link the cache wipe? My laptop is old as hell and would take me the rest of the day trying to just navigate away from this page.
I sent you a PM.
OMG TY SO MUCH. Idk if it was the wipe script or that I shut the phone off for a little bit, but it fixed my problem. TY TY TY TY TY. Thumbs up are totally going to you. If thederekjay is still here, I'll try and thumb him up too.
NP, the scripts have saved my ass a couple times!
tdj scripts have been updated by infamous here's the link

[Q] How to Log What Apps Run and Startup

Lately my phone has been locking up at boot then rebooting. The exact symptoms as far as I can tell is the phone boots like normal but something that's running in the background causes the phone to freeze if I start using it too soon (to say check mail, surf the web, start google music etc). The screen freezes then after about a minute or so the phone reboots.
I'm sure there's some way to get a log of what's running at startup and ideally identify which app is causing the lockup. You anybody have any ideas?

Have you tried any of the following:
Clearing Cache and Dalvik Cache (in a custom recovery)
Fixing permissions (in a custom recovery)
If neither of the two above work, try clearing data with a factory reset (again, in a custom recovery).
Tried as you suggested and it didn’t make a difference.
On the subject what does 'fixing permissions' do? How would that help?
As for the factory reset, that's my last resort if I can't find some way to log what apps are running at boot.

Well, Rom Toolbox Pro has the "Auto Start Manager" which allows you to analyze which apps run at boot and to disable the items which might cause lag. It looks a lot different than the Windows msc.exe menu and I honestly don't know anything about how this works and it seems that a lot of them are widget-related (which makes sense).
Fixing Permissions in Recovery basically takes the apks in /system and gives them read/write access. This is needed for system apps to run correctly. It typically isn't useful unless you're pushing apps to become system apps, then it helps to fix permissions. I was a bit doubtful that it'd help in your case, but I know that is some system apps are force-closing, fixing permissions can help.

[Q] [URGENT HELP] Nothing is working!

I have a HTC Wildfire S, rooted, with an AOKP rom.
One day, my phone was running slow, so I rebooted into recovery and cleared dalvik cache and system cache. I rebooted the system and absolutely NOTHING is working. after I unlock the phone, a bunch of processes stop working. Pressing the home button makes Nova Launcher crash. I have since uninstalled it, and still nothing is working.
I can't even turn the phone off using the power button. The only way I can shut the screen off is by removing the battery manually.
EDIT: I tried a factory reset, and it's still the same as before. NOTHING is working. I can go into Settings, that's about it.
A list of apps that stop working:
Link2sd
facebook
outlook
yahoo weather
google.process.gapps
nova launcher
swiftkey
superuser
ETC..
I have attached pictures so you guys can have a sense of what my problem is. Sorry if the pictures are blurry, I had to use my Ipod touch to take them.
Sorry If i have made any errors in this thread. I am new here, I just created an account right now so I can find some help to solve my issue.

Thanks @Guitarfreak12 and @aWFSuser
I did what you guys said, and I reflashed the same ROM and everything is working fine. The only downside, although, is that I have had to re-install all my apps again.
Also, would you guys know what caused the problem? I'd like to know so that I can ensure it doesn't happen again in the future.

Did you had a lot of applications installed and linked along with dalvik to sd-ext?
Then after clearing the cache on reboot the dalvik files will regenerate in the /data partition if there are a lot of apps and the /data overflows then your apps will stop working without the dex files. And clearing the dalvik cache usually doesn't help in increasing speed.........next time you should go into link2sd and use the "clean dalvik cache" option there.........

This actually happens because Link2SD can also link dalvik cache files as well, what the recovery must have deleted would be the symbolic links that the Link2SD script creates, so next time if you want to clear the dalvik cache, use the option found in the Link2sd app
Alright so it seems, instead of using the dalvik cache cleaner on recovery, I should just use the one located in Link2sd. I'll be sure to do that next time to ensure that no problems persist.
Thanks for all the help!

[Q] Home button not working on 5.0.2

On a 2013 LTE Nexus 7 with the latest 5.0.2 installed, my home button doesn't work. The back and recent apps buttons work fine, but the home button doesn't do anything. Like the rest of the buttons, it responds to touch with an animation, but it doesn't take me home, ever, and it also doesn't launch Google Search on hold. I've read in other posts that there should be a "Home" menu option in Settings under the Device section, but I don't have that either. Another oddity, quick settings pulldown from the status bar isn't working. I can pull down the notification tray, but cannot pull down the quick settings above it.
Doing some tinkering of my own, I can tell you the following:
Wiping the data partition resolves the problem, but I'm trying to keep my user accounts, home screens, apps intact, hence my continued search for solution
Using a different launcher (Google Now Launcher via Play Store), the home button works fine but I'd rather use the default system Launcher
Reflashing the factory system image doesn't resolve the problem
There are no force close error messages
Clearing data/cache for the Launcher app doesn't resolve the problem
Clearing all cached data (through the storage menu option within settings, for each user) also doesn't resolve the problem
I have been tinkering (root, multirom, etc) but right now I'm on a fresh, unrooted factory system image, but with my "dirty" data partition (I'm trying to keep my user accounts, home screens, apps intact)
Any ideas of what might be upsetting the Launcher app? Next steps?
Same here.
I haven't tried your entire list, but I've done a few of them. Oddly, when i hit "recent apps", i can then hit "home" and it works. But that's the only time. And my notifications seem to be dead, as well as quick settings...
Background: I'm all stock. I got a system update notice for 5.1.1, which i was pretty sure i already had. So while checking my current OS version, I ended up verifying that i was up to date already. Shortly thereafter, the home button stopped responding and the tablet froze up. I can't remember if it rebooted by itself or if i had to long press the home button to get it to turn off. But when it came back on, it's like everything went factory reset (all the homescreens returned to factory), but all my apps are still there in the app drawer, but they all act as if i just installed them. I have to go into them and re-login to all of them and change all their settings to how i like them. And the homescreens will need to be redone. And the "home" button and notifications still don't work. Tried Nova, but that doesn't fix any of the issues for me. I may try the Google Now Launcher next.
It looks like ahoyboyhoy has tried flashing factory image and it doesn't help, so i'm not going to factory reset if I'll be stuck in the same situation in the end.
To follow up on *my* experience with this problem, I ended up having to format the data partition, so basically a full factory reset. After that, everything was back to normal and I restored apps from a backup.

Thanks for the update! Were you stock? If so, what was the best way you found to do a backup/restore of apps? Did it handle app data? I tried using Helium a few years ago on an HTC device, but I ran into problems that couldn't be overcome. Does Android's built-in backup option work well? I never have had good app data recovery with the buil-in option...

I was stock rooted and I think I used My Backup Pro. Not sure if you need a paid version or root access to backup app data, but I was able to back up apks+data and although it wasn't as seamless as a TWRP backup, it was better than doing things manually.
