[Q] Memory Issues - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi there,
the official HTC Desire specs say it has 512mb internal memory, but mine says it has only a total of 148MB in the corresponding settings page. although i install all apps possible on the SD now i have a lack of memory... only 10MB left and i get a permanent icon in the status bar saying theres only little spacy left. and i dont have many apps installed and did a full wipe 2 weeks ago.
what can i do? did i maybe get a broken phone?
thanks in advance!

No your phone is fine, do some searing for A2SD+ or Data2sd.

i have App2SD installed! but having skype and stuff which is only installable on the internal memory uses almost all the space i have. most of my apps are on the SD though.

Not A2SD but A2SD+, this uses a ext partition instead of the froyo version.

Correct. I agree with TheGhost1233, for the moment, it's best to use A2SD+ and not FroYo A2SD. Data2ext is still in development and isn't completely finished yet. You still may find that not 100% or app data can be placed to the SD card because of developer restrictions (not all apps will move as they need to be modified by the developer).

cool stuff. thank you for your help! i will try it tonight after work!

FYI the official specs say the desire has 512mb rom not internal storage, rom includes all the partitions on the desire, boot, system, cache, data, recovery, radio hboot. blah blah blah

ok, so after a lot of months i managed to root and s-off my desire correctlty. i installed sandvolds android 4.0 rom with a built in a2sd script. im not exactly sure which one i chose, but it was "apps and dalvik on ext" but i still have the memory problem in install 5 or 6 apps and then i get the message that no free space is left to install more apps. i dont get it, arent apps supposed to be installed on the ext partition i chose during the installation? heres a screenshot of the memory status:

So, as you see here the applications i`m RESTORING using Titanium Back up aren`t being installed on the App2SD ext but rather they are all going to the Internal Memory then i moved them (one by one) to the SD but the internal memory is still the same and the SD partition decreases but the ext partition stays as empty as ever,,,, So can anyone help me?
Note: i WIPED everything before installing MIUI!! ("Wipe data/factory reset")
There is none :] I emulate it with a Folder i've put into the dock.
Miui places ALL applications on multiple pages on the device. There is no actual app drawer unless you place all apps into a folder and move it to the dock. Are you positive titanium backup was sucessfully installed? Try doing a reboot on the device.

Any Dev who can help
Anyone HELP me guys i flashed a new ROM to get a free space and a fast phone!!!
Problem is still here!!
I think your question may be a bit specific for the 'Desire General' section.
I think MIUI specific questions are best off in the relevant 'Desire Android Development' threads.
Just a thought.
PS
I think there are several flavours for the App2/wherever of MIUI -you'll have to follow the threads to get the full picture.
Same thing
Did you select the option, ''Force move to same location'' or something in Titanium preferences?
I too had the same problem when i was trying out a MIUI based rom. I thought it was a problem with the A2SD or something. So i reinstalled the rom, manually installed all my apps using appbrain and it was ok. The apps mostly went to A2SD partition like its supposed to.
I think its something to do with Titanium itself.
I read on miui page to use in a terminal emulator:
su
a2sd cachesd
I solved by this way..
have a look there

[Q] Is 320 Mb of internal storage enough?

Arc/Arc S has 320 Mb of internal storage (user available, at least)
So, I am asking how many apps (not huge ones, like HD games) can you install before phone memory gets full?
with Root and link2sd app you can download as this much

but without root I can geruntee that you can download about 100+ if you exclude the hd games and used the native app2sd
I had 140 apps installed and 80MB free, just used native App2SD.
Now I cleared out the Junk and have ~100 Apps or so left and 100-105MB free memory

Thanks, that shall be enough for me.
I'm planning on installing ~50 apps (+some games) so I guess there won't be any problems.

yes you are right, root+link2sd is the best way
what is Link2sd ? I'm sorry but I'm still new to the android system. Is there a way lock my download files onto the SD card and not onto the phone memory ?
Link2sd is a app that can move your aplications/games to a second partition created by you on your SD card.

Yes, it is, just follow this guide
Remember*
Arc/Arc S can read EXT3 using link2sd.
I'm using it and i fell a lot better than with FAT32.
Another app to free internal memory is APPS2SD. You can very easily move your apps to the SD card.
Not every apps can be moved. I mean by app2sd.

I use Link2SD and a 32GB Class 10 memcard with 1GB EXT3 partition All apps (games, other apps + system: like google maps, flash, etc.) moved to Ext partition This is very best solution for me
I have in the phone 265MB free space and 595MB free on EXT3 part.
I also wanna know. Also I want to know a RAM management app coz when I quit heavy games like FIFA 12, GTA III, Asphalt 6, Backstab the icons of my home screen restart. Due to RAM
Xperia Arc (rooted)
I have around 40 apps installed (including few HD games) and 130 Mb free.
None of my apps are on SD Card.

Link2SD with [ROM/4.1.2] [Dec 01 2012] CM10 | Jelly Bean 4.1.2 - v2.7

I love link2sd and would like to take it with me after I upgraded my Desire from CM7.2 to a CM10mod.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1945441
But even after erasing the A2SD Scripts, I get a message telling me ext3 is not orking with this rom, giving Fat32 a try is recommended.

You think it's worth the try to format the 2nd partition in FAT32? Or do you have another clue what could be the matter?
It says that sd-ext2 isn't working, because you probably don't have a second ext partition, and you won't need it.
Try going through settings and stop the app from searching for a second ext partition.
Hey - thx for your reply!
I was running link2SD ith CM7.2 before. So my SD should be still parted into a main partition for all my mess and a 2nd ext3 partition for link2SD to store the apps.
That's why I wonder why link2sd it is not finding it...

So, you have a fat32 main partition with all your stuff, and an ext partition for apps. Link2sd is looking for a second ext partition, as if you had 3 partitions on your sd-card. As yoy don't have a third partition, it gives that error.
Ummm - a second as if there were 3? That's confusing me. Why can't it find the ext as before?
And how could I point it towards that one?
anyone left who'sgot an idea?
Is the ext3 not found?
Is an ext3 not working with this ROM?
thx!
Ext3 work in this rom, in the developer thread an user use it.
First ics based rom i installed give me some trouble due to wrong partition alignment, previous working on gb. Can you check partition in your recovery?

[Q] Re-partitioning option

Hello, I have spent all day looking for this answer without any luck so I am hoping someone can answer my question here.
I wanted to upgrade my SII to the latest Cyanogenmod I did the following:
1). Downloaded and used Odin to install StockCWM-EL26.tar (CWM v5.0.2.7)
2). Using my SD card upgraded to CWM v5.8.1.5 (newest version I could find)
3). Factory reset and wiped everything.
4). Using my SD card installed the latest version of Cyanogenmod cm-10.2-20140330-NIGHTLY-d710 (Jelly Bean v4.3.1)
Everything booted fine and worked fine however I quickly ran out of app space. I noticed that my App partition space is 2GB where my S3 phone running the same OS (factory version) has the entire phone's space available for apps (16GB). I figured to fix this issue I just needed to re-partition the phone using a PIT file but I can't find this anywhere. Am I missing something or am I just stuck with a 2GB App partition and no chance of anything larger?
Thank you very much...
Taran.
There is no "option" to change partitions for this phone. Or any device anywhere haha. Its more of a procedure. Anyways a lesson in terminology doesn't help. But yes you are "stuck" with 2 gigs. But I've installed literally hundreds of apps before having this problem. You should look at app2sd or something. No need to partition anything. Good luck ^ ^

oh...
Thanks for the quick response Linux guy. I am sad to hear I can't re-partition the phone but at least I can quite looking around for a way to do it...
I've moved all my apps using the built in "Move to SD" function in the system app menu but still almost out of space. I'll check out App2SD.
Thanks again,
Taran
Here's something else to do. Go to settings>apps and click the menu button to sort your apps by size. I bet you have an app that's being a hog *pictures*

Ok, time to start house cleaning and saving for a newer phone.
Thanks again.

Check the apps that use any type of avi/avatar image...Twitter, Facebook tend to Cache images and sap storage as well, each app selected will show you the cached size
Bashing away at my HTC Desire C
Thanks again for the replies. After a bit of looking around I ended up using Link2SD by Bulent Akpinar. So far that has solved all the issues I was having with space (seems to work a lot better then the built in "Phone to SD" did).
Take care...

Confirm amount of built in ROM and RAM

Hi all,
Hi All, I bought the US Version 64 GB/4GB phone. How do you test/confirm the amount of ROM and RAM on your zf2? In Titanium Backup I see the following and wondering if this is a cause for concern. It shows ROM at 2.34 GB is this what others are seeing?

So what you are looking at is the system rom partition (closed system that can be accessed by root), your internal storage and your external storage. There is no mention of RAM there...
You need to check with some other app to find out your RAM...
ROM is your system partition, which is were you "system.img" goes, ram is around 3.7GB which is completly normal since the gpu takes ram and system runtime, and after that "user available ram" which is 1.4GB or so depends on how many apps your running etc...dont be concerned those numbers are completly normal.

Any suggestions on an app that does that? And whats the point of having 4 GB of ROM if it's partitioned and the OS can't even access it all?

Thats a safety measure in case the manufacture needs more space in a future OTA update, and you "can" access it with root, like i said stop worrying about rom partition size, sit back and enjoy your new phone.

With a 64GB Internal Storage, it wont make much difference
As for the app, look on the play store for a "Hardware Checker"
