Will xda support the cr-48? i know there aren't any netbooks on xda currently but this is the first of its kind. The cr-48 has a developer mode so unsigned packages can be loaded, like other operating systems... i have applied for one here http://www.google.com/chromeos/#utm...launch&utm_medium=ha&utm_term=chrome notebook and it seems as though 60,000 people total in the U.S. will be getting one. Many average users have already received their notebooks and i hope to get one for myself soon! For those of you who have already applied a tracker has been made so you can check to see if one is being delivered to your zipcode http://addicted-gamer.com/cr48-tracker/
i just recently got one of these too! writing on it now! Will there be a section for the cr-48???
XDA-Developers is the largest phone development forum and part of that is keeping our focus on mobile devices. yes Notebooks are in some senses *mobile* but we deal with cellular devices.

The CR-48 is a "cellular device."
It comes equipped with built-in CDMA 3G technology, for free (from Verizon) and there are already hacks and instructions on how to use T-Mobile GSM sim cards in the CR-48. It's definitely designed to be a cellularly mobile device out of the box.
I won't argue whether or not xda should have a forum for it (but what's the harm?); but I'll take issue with denying the OP's request because the CR-48 is not a "cellular device." It's as much a cellular/mobile device as a lot of the things that have a forum section for them (Nook Color, Dell Streak 7, Galaxy Tab, etc, etc).

I know its technically a "cellular device" but I mean we work with devices that fit in ones pocket (tablets included) or run android/windows phone/windows mobile, dont tell me you have cargo pants in the end the CR48 is a laptop

By that logic, then we would have to incorporate tons of other notebooks and netbooks into the forum. The CR-48 is not the first notebook to come with cellular antennae. The last two notebooks I've used have had this capability from the factory by Lenovo (IBM). All I need is to insert my SIM card for GSM service, or purchase the CDMA PCI adaptor for CDMA service. Just because the laptop connects to a cellular network, that doesn't mean it should be considered for use on XDA. This is a mobile device community. I'm kind of shocked that they have tablets on the site, but I guess that's because most of them are using mobile operating systems like Android.

Tablets don't fit in the pockets of anything I wear. LOL.
I'm not advocating a CR-48 section, I just found that particular justification for not including one amusing.
I've got a CR-48, which is why the thread caught my eye, but I was just passing through looking for the Thank You Button thread. I won't lose any sleep over the lack of a CR-48 section, but if one were to show up, I'd read it.
Peace!
Notebook section is not needed for the fact that there are many forums already on that one device, and there are new phones coming out in 2011, so we shouled have space for that, rather than it being crowded on here

Don't forget Bada
But yeah.. xda is a phone/tablet site, not really a netbook/laptop site
And yeah tablets don't fit in your pocket but they run mobile os's which the phones are these fora already use,
still be cool to see if devs do anything with the cr-48 and can make it better just like a phone os.
I would also love to see this.

So I noticed this article, basically, it comes with windows mobile 7 and supports both EVDO and HSPDA, it supposedly has a different chipset to. It's obviously going to cost more to. Can anyone tell me if this is worth waiting for?
http://wmpoweruser.com/?p=3664
Windows Mobile 7 isn't developed yet. Microsoft just finished 6.5.
So I think it will take some time untils Microsoft will realease WM 7....
yea it says not at least until quarter 3 the phone will be released
The slides were leaked in march, but there's no indication of when they were MADE. It's entirely possible that it is the Touch Pro2 we know and love, but that things have changed since the slides were made and/or the early product slides contained some errors (as was the case with some ATT slides on the HTC fortress).
I wouldn't consider waiting for it until I knew for sure that it existed. With that said, I assume Windows 7 is the selling point for you. Personally, I never like getting an OS brand new. Too many growing pains. I let other people adopt it first, iron out all the wrinkles, and then 12 months later, once they're done paying extra for the privilege of beta testing I get the finished stable product for less.
Everybody's different, and especially if there's a specific feature in a new OS someone can't live with out, it might be worth the hassle of early adoption. But I would encourage people to not automatically assume the newest version will be the best for their needs.
Where do you get the Idea, it's not the rhodium? I don't see much of a diffrence. I've seen this pics before and at that moment they did represent the touch pro 2.
It's probably a typo.
Probably should read 6.x, possibly .x as it'll be either 6.1 or 6.5

3.4" screen, winmo 7. Chipset looks like "7600", although it is scrunched a bit. @Phil, I don't think we're looking at typos so much as early/sketchy drawing board specs. If this sheet were made last year before OS delays, windows mobile 7 might have seemed doable.

I think your probably right actually, it's probably an old spec sheet.
Considering HTC are probably working internally on devices that they plan to release in the next few years, have them completed at least several months before release (time to test/finalise specs/release to manufacturing) and probably announce them to networks way before we find out about them so there is time to negotiate sales contracts etc chances are that's all this is.
That's the Sprint version of the Touch Pro 2. It's based off of the Rhodium nomenclature but is built differently. Also Windows Mobile 7 has been taken off in favor of 6.1 upgradeable to 6.5. The device is EVDO Rev A and HSDPA for 2100 and 900 bands only which means only usable in Europe and Asia. As far as I know, it's still sporting a 3.6" WVGA screen since the size is almost the same as the current GSM Touch Pro 2 except slightly thicker. This is actually pretty old news. HTC has a separate code name for this one except I have to take a look at the presentation I have somewhere in my files.
the device does exist, here are the device infomation taken from my device:

I think this is the touch pro 2, just an old document that is now outdated, I doubt that they would make two phones with the same code name, and also the phone in the picture looks like the touch pro 2 but has a smaller screen and less ram so in some ways it seems worse than the touch pro 2, so if ti is a real phone i would say no

What does this mean for chances of W7S on the HD2? I'm a complete noob here. Please don't bash me too bad if this is a dumb question. It seems the i891 meets even fewer of the WP7 specifications than the HD2!!!
Sorry, cant post links
Now that's creepy. Microsoft better not be playing a bunch of people. If Windows can run on lower-grade devices, it better be released for them too.
That may be true- but I think its going to be optimised over its life before its released so it will be a different device.
WM7 is more about standards, and things have to have lots of stuff to be allowed to use it- which makes sence.
Is it possible that Microsoft are shunning HTC because they've focused more on Android than Win Mo in the past year?
i think its the same body as the i8910 HD but they might have updated the internals. i.e. processor, RAM, ROM ..

OR maybe it's HTC wanting to provide phones for the business end of the consumer spectrum and thus staying far away from WP7 and instead going with android.
The device in question is a prototype that will NOT go on sale; I wouldn't draw too many conclusions from this.

A prototype using existing hardware for an OS that should not run without a magical "video scaler"...good going M$. What a nose dive. It's all about pushing over priced phones now. Where did the pda concept go? You killed it.
I guess my point is, if it can run on this phone, why not the HD2?
The phone is hacked, the screen size is obviously different.
the fact that they look the same doesnt mean that they are the same
first of all, the bottom part of the phone shown at mix is longer
second, the distance between "samsung" label and screen is obviously bigger
they just put the hardware in a shell just to have something to demonstrate.
its like taking your hard drive and sticking it into a case to make it portable

Because they can make more money with new HD2 + new hardware buttons + 7 Series OS (this world has bad sides I know)
I accepted that the HD2 will not get 7 Series, because there really are a few good reasons. The HD2 does not meat at least 3 to 4 requirements.
BUT, then I see this...
Anyway, I am moving to Android in April/May.

The HD2 has no search button, no hardware camera button, no dedicated power button, half a gigabyte of flash memory when the minimum requirement is 8GB, and has an SD card reader which is banned on WP7S devices. In addition there is a significant question-mark over whether the touch-screen is capable of registering the necessary four independent points of contact, and some doubt as to whether it has the necessary non-GPU-based hardware image scaler.

The first PDAs (Personal Digital Assistants) originally did not have any radio hardware. Soon they had bluetooth and infra-red connectivity but they did not evolve into "smartphones" until they got given radio for telephone and 2G data modem. So, O2, the British network provider (now part of Spain's Telefonica) contracted HTC to build such a device and so released the XDA (i.e. a PDA with the "X Factor" - telephony and 2G data hardware); hence the XDA was born in 2003.
I didn't get the XDA because it had a great big antenna sticking out of the top. I waited and got the O2 XDAII (aka HTC Himalaya) in 2003 http://www.gsmarena.com/o2_xda_ii-697.php.
There's a lot of love on these forums for HTC because they were the original pioneers of the smartphone.

there is more if you speak about the history!
before o2 devices there was a period when win phones were on the market. when xda was introduced by o2, competitors (like tmobile, etc) had MDA (mobile digirtal assistant), VDA (vodafone digital assistant) and others probably. first users on this forum did not knew that they are using the same devices (in terms of producer) and this is how xda-developers appeared.
my first phone was a qtec (htc) unbranded, with windows ce - a test device from a friend, microsoft emplyee.
this forum was started when the need of the community appeared. it used to be a great forum! without the need of sayign something, I was simply searching for info, find it and use it. now... even if I am a member since 2006 I have to post some useless thoughts to have the right to read the forum posts! I started coming across this site, via internet search, as far back as 2004 but never became a member until I needed to download stuff and contribute posts. The membership count was going up uselessly because people were registering just to download stuff. Now, I believe, you can download from the forums even without being a member. This makes the membership numbers a more true figure.
The 10-post rule applies to development forums only, I think. You can still post on the device specific forums but in the Q&A and General sub-forums. The intention is to stop people from asking questions, not related to development, in the dev threads.

My story begins when I took a visit to a t-mobile store and purchased my first smart phone: a my touch 3g slide. I learned a lot from that tank of a device. I think I spent 8 hours or more reading xda before I finally gained root access.
I love android for way too many reasons than I can list here. But my top reasons include:
Not being locked down to what some corporation says I will enjoy.
Having a sense of community on XDA with like-minded individuals.
Having the freedom to truly make my device mine.
Getting a new hobby which I'm constantly intellectually simulated and challenged.
Being able to perform tasks that usually could only be performed on my computer on the go.
To say that Android has changed my life for the better would be an understatement. Not only has it made my communications easier, is made a lot of my daily tasks either automated, faster or streamlined.
I can't think of any mobile platform that can currently accomplish everything android can. At least not so effortlessly. Many have made the claim but anyone who does their research knows that the claims are false.
I love android because it let's me make my phone the way I want it.

^^^Isn't that breaking the rules of the contest? LoL
Why do I love android?
I love android because of the freedom it offers. Its not limited to one phone, released by one company, released once a year. Android hasn't really changed the way I look for a smart phone, but XDA sure has.
How I came to Android and how it has positively impacted my day to day routine?
Well, like many others, I was an apple fanboy at one time and I had that one friend that had to rub in my face how much better his android phone was than my iPhone 2g (my favorite iPhone of them all...seriously). I got tired of my friend showing of his android phone (the original droid with the keyboard) so I traded my iPhone 2g for a Mytouch 3g with the 3.5mm headphone jack. Oh my god, I fell in love with android, being able to add widgets to the home screen blew my mind. Ever since I've had nothing but android devices (I played with an iPhone here and there, couldn't resist). Android has not positively impacted my life in any way, shape or form. It made me discover XDA and then I became a flash-aholic (may need a 12-step program lol). To be serious, android has positively impacted my life, it made me realize how much more I can do and allows me to do with a phone.
Android Superior?
Yes and no. Without the Devs and helpful members here on XDA, I think I would be on the borderline of switching back to an iPhone. The main reason I like iphones is because of the battery life and the stability of the OS. Without XDA, we would be stuck with whatever Google and the OEM gives us, which is fine for average user who just texts, uses internet, play games and make calls as well as download a home screen replacement and a few widgets, but most of us here on XDA are here for a reason. In some ways Android is superior to other OS's, but in other ways the other OS's are superior.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney)
Even if you power off your cell phone, the U.S. government can turn it back on.
That's what ex-spy Edward Snowden revealed in last week's interview with NBC's Brian Williams. It sounds like sorcery. Can someone truly bring your phone back to life without touching it?
No. But government spies can get your phone to play dead.
It's a crafty hack. You press the button. The device buzzes. You see the usual power-off animation. The screen goes black. But it'll secretly stay on -- microphone listening and camera recording.
How did they get into your phone in the first place? Here's an explanation by former members of the CIA, Navy SEALs and consultants to the U.S. military's cyber warfare team. They've seen it firsthand.
Government spies can set up their own miniature cell network tower. Your phone automatically connects to it. Now, that tower's radio waves send a command to your phone's antennae: the baseband chip. That tells your phone to fake any shutdown and stay on.
A smart hack won't keep your phone running at 100%, though. Spies could keep your phone on standby and just use the microphone -- or send pings announcing your location.
John Pirc, who did cybersecurity research at the CIA, said these methods -- and others, like physically bugging devices -- let the U.S. hijack and reawaken terrorists' phones.
"The only way you can tell is if your phone feels warm when it's turned off. That means the baseband processor is still running," said Pirc, now chief technology officer of the NSS Labs security research firm.
This isn't easy to accomplish. It's a highly targeted attack. But if you are really concerned about the government's ability to reawaken your phone, here are some things you could do.
Recovery mode. Put your phone on what's known as Device Firmware Upgrade (DFU) mode. This bypasses the phone's operating system. Every phone has a different approach for this.
It's fairly easy (albeit cumbersome) for iPhone users. Plug it into a computer with iTunes open. Hold down the Power and Home buttons for 10 seconds (no less) then let go of the Power button. Wait for an iTunes pop-up. That's it.
For Android users, recovery mode varies by model. Android Magazine has a great tutorial here.
Create a barrier. Use a signal-blocking phone case. You can buy them (Off Pocket, HideCell) or even make your own -- assuming you have the patience to do so.
Pull out the battery. Without a power source, the phone can't come back on. This is the best, most surefire option. It's also, annoyingly, no longer a choice on most top-of-the-line smartphones. The iPhone, HTC One and Nokia Lumia don't have removable batteries. Luckily, the Samsung Galaxy and LG G3 still do.
Silent Circle, a company that enables top-end private communication, kept these issues in mind when it co-created the Blackphone. It has a removable battery. It uses PrivatOS, a stripped-down version of Android that reduces tracking.
And because spoofed cell towers can target its antennae too, Blackphone's makers are working with chipmaker Nvidia to develop their own custom, more secure baseband chip.
Silent Circle CEO Mike Janke, a former Navy SEAL, said they designed the phone based on revelations that the NSA can find powered off phones and the FBI can tap their microphones.
You probably don't need to fear that the National Security Agency is using this strategy on your phone, Janke said. Those spies are focused on hunting down a specified list of terrorists and foreign fighters. But he noted that the FBI is using these kinds of surveillance tactics in the U.S. for all sorts of crimes.

Your baseband and various other sub-systems like PMIC are always on as long as you have the battery connector. AND the WiFi is still receiving network info even when you think you have WiFi OFF, which is why chainfire developed Pry-Fi. This is what makes it so easy for NSA to attack you device.
