Here us the question what software number should be on unbranded dhd.
Please don't mention anything about rooting as I'm not planning to do this

As per the subject i had my HTC Desire purchased in INDIAN grey market (Desire officially not released in INDIA yet)....Received yesterday and everything is O.K....except the Chinese suggestions while typing....
Also wanted to know, What official generic update i have to choose for my device...Also wanted to know the manufacturing country of my device...HOW????

You can tell if its branded as you will have the phone carriers wallpapers, ringtones etc added to your phone. When 2.2 comes out if you are on branded you are most likely going to be the last person in the world to get the update unlike unbranded phones. Some phone carriers also like to print a logo of the phone carrier on the casing of the phone.

From your software version it's looks like you have unbranded phone made for asia region.
Yes, you should root. Recommended. Worth it.

Hi Guys, long time lurker.
I have an Orange UK Desire which I just recently sent back to HTC unbranded. It has been sent back to me with the Orange version of software on.
Before I unbrand I was thinking - as people are often lookign for the original Orange UK RUU to rebrand etc, is there any way of me ripping this to help out the community before I unbrand and root?

I would say use the htc asia india one, since youre from india ;p and you bought it there.

But the build and baseband do not match. Would it be compatible with the phone.
I do not have much knowledge am a noob.
You won't know until you try. If it fail, it would say some CID errors (your phone won't brich, don't worry) and you will need a goldcard to RUU
You are HTC Asia India. It's the .720. That tells us that. To use any other RUU (i.e not .720.) You need a gold card.
Although if the 2.3.3 HTC dev gingerbread installs, this is still under warranty anyway

I'm afraid not. Until s-off and super cid is achieved you can only run RUU's including .980 in their description. Also, you can't run one with a lesser version number than the one you already have installed.
It appears that you have the latest Optus Australian release available at present.

Your HBOOT version is important. You should find a description how to find out in the tutorials, too

Since it is locked to Vodafone it must be vodafone branded, and if it's carrier branded generally I think it might be 1.01.0002. At least that was the case with my friend, who was 3 branded.

Just wanted to make sure that he will follow the correct instructions for his HBOOT lol - But you're right - obviously - branded = HBOOT 1.01.0002 (if there aren't some exceptions).
To answered your second question, there is no way (currently) to free SIM unlock it.
Try talking to the carrier.
