I am using Desire Z (bought it from Singapore, Asia)
I followed the instructions from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834228 and i'm having some problems with my phone now.
I can't seem to get past the HTC loading screen (quietly brilliant doesn't even appear).
I managed to get into hboot and it shows that i have s-off. I tried using the Recovery option but it didn't work (black screen with triangle sign)
I've read a lot of threads but I'm not exactly sure which thread to follow (almost paralysed with fear).
Can someone please help me?
Is this thread a joke?
Someone posted the exact same thing earlier...word for word
Edit: here you go, read this I helped this guy sort his out earlier.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=871288
I did see the thread but I also noticed that he was using a G2.
I wasn't sure if the Clockwork Rom link you've posted works for a Desire Z as well.
(Yes, my new android phone)

yes it does, clockwork mod recovery is the same on both the z and the g2
I've tried the instructions you given in the thread.
I put the CWM image file in my adb folder (i assume that that's the rootsdkfolder/tools).
After selecting fastboot on my phone, there was a screen with several options - bootloader, reboot, reboot bootloader and power down. i'm not sure which to choose so I didn't choose any.
After that, I inputted the command into my PC's terminal. The error returned was that fastboot is not recognised as an internal or external command.
Am I supposed to select something on my phone after selecting fastboot?
Thank you for your help.
no, you just need to fire up your adb then run the fastboot command, your phone is in the correct screen as soon as you select fastboot.
I managed to get into ClockworkMod Recovery but am not sure what to do from there.
I figured out I need to get a rom that works for Desire Z but not sure how to go about installing it using ClockworkMod ...

download a rom from xda
mount your sd card into your pc via recovery and place rom on sd card
unmount sd
wipe data
go "flash zip" or similar, then go select from sd card find it and press yes to flash.
That worked. You're incredible!
Thank you very much for your help!!!!!

Good Morning Guys, I thought I posted this already but I can't find the post now so must of forgot to submit it before I ran out the door for work.
I sucessfully rooted my phone last night and all seems sucessful. I want to put a new rom on it (possibly the new one)
However at the bottom of the instructions I was following it then said download and apply this Recovery Image. What is this about and is this needed?
I read somewhere that it must be a certain recovery image and I am a bit worried about this part so was anyone could point me in the right direction to what recovery image I need to download and instructions how how to do it?
Thanks.
Can anyone help me????
PRETTY PLEASE
I promise to stop bothering you all once I have managed to get a custom rom on once...
You need a custom recovery to be able to flash a ROM. This can be done either by running the last part of the rooting instructions again OR using Fake-Flash (some will say just use ROM Manager but I think it's pants personally)...
Download THIS, rename it to update.zip (not update.zip.zip) and copy this to the root of your SD card. Also copy the ROM you wish to use to the SD card. Then use this to enter the custom recovery to flash a custom ROM (to get to the recovery, turn the Desire on whilst holding down the vol. down button, select recovery from the menu and press power and then when at the red ! screen press power and vol up at the same time and then select 'apply sdcard:update.zip')
or simply download the rom manager from the market its free installl it and then go into it, and at the top you will have a FLASH CLOCKWORKMOD RECOVERY and your current one undeneath, so you click on that It will ask you to confirm your phone and the allow it to access the root and wait till its done and voila and then all you do pretty much is put a rom onto your partitioned sd card (swap0 ext3 256/512/768/1024mb) and Install it via the rom manager
I did say you can use ROM Manager but I think it's **** personally - I prefer to see what I'm doing (and it's a LOT quicker)

HELP ME :-(
Ok I tried following instructions I installed the Recovery Image that went through fine. I used fake-flash with the rom in a zip on the sd card went into recovery fine loaded the fake flash which all worked perfectly. Selected install from zip on sd or what ever it says selected the rom zip file.
Took about 10 minutes cant rember if it said failed but when I rebooted the phone I just ended up with the red triangle and exclmation mark. I did a restore with nandroid (backed up before trying the rom and now its back to how it was.
I got the rom from cookandroid.com using the Official Froyo from OpenDesire.
What am I doing wrong as I am sure its me
Had another go this morning using the same downloaded rom I used last night and worked perfectly this time. After the rom installation it rebooted and of course the radio didn't work as that needed up grading so installed the radio then did a wipe on the phone and its brilliant. Haven't played with it much yet so that is what todays 'TODO List' contains
Thanks for your help.
Regards,
Max
Yep, once you start doing it, you will find out that flashing different roms is actually more interesting than using the phone...

How did you get NANDROID on your desire?

NANDROID is included in clockwork recovery which is installed if you root your phone using unrevoked
Guys, I need some help from you.
I already tried to search the tread but can't found the information I would like to get.
I tried to update my Desire rom following step on this page "(h)ttp://theunlockr.com/2010/06/07/how-to-load-a-custom-rom-on-the-htc-desire/" (note I already rooted my phone, and sorry I'm new member can't post the link correctly). Everything went well till step 7. Select Apply sdcard:update.zip.... then it fail to update. So, I rebooted my desire then it can't boot up to main screen (HTC Sense). So, I entered boot loader once again and selected Recovery mode. Now, it stuck at HTC white screen and doesn't go anywhere further than that.
I guess what cause this is "I didn't change the name of recovery package in step 1" so I might break some data? (please correct me if I'm wrong)
If this the case how should I fix it? Is there any suggestion?
Thank you in Advance
Now, I'm trying to flash RUU via fastboot. The process went well. However, after complete flash, it still can't boot to main screen. Will it help if I try to flash another RUU?
P.S. Phone shakes many time when I open it and then stuck on HTC white screen...
maybe this help you

Try unrEVOked, it will install a recovery image to your phone. Then enter recovery mode, it will be Clockworkmod then you choose install zip from SD card, browse until the .zip file and select it. Note that in clockworkmod you navigate with the trackball and select by pressing on the trackball.

I can confirm, that this should fix your problem.
I had the exact issue as you last night, but managed to finally fix it by using the unrevoked software to get recovery, then erasing cache, then flashing a new rom.

How can I use unrEVOked methode? I'm trying it and now stuck by the fact that I can't boot into Android right now. unrEVOked is asked me to enable USB debugging but I can't... Is there any way to perfrom unrEVOked without booting into Android?
Tried other RUU including Froyo one but still no hope...
I got some problems after using revoked last night.
I followed the guides on the forum and looked through quite a few threads about my problem but couldnt find anything about it.
I did the hboot usb driver first which worked.
Then i did the unrevoked root which i think worked, looks that way.
Now i'm following the unlocker guide on how to flash.
But the guide is not following the stuff i get.
When i press volume down and power i get into the boot loader.
I select fastboot, but then there is no option to recovery as the guide says. I do however have a recovery on the first page that loads.
if i use the first page recovery i get into a clockworkmod recovery v2.5.0.7
i do as the guide says, and wipe data but at that stage the screen just goes black. If i press power again i come back to the first clockwork page and nothing seems to have happened.
seems to be the same with every option i choose.
So got a few questions.
1. How can i check my phone is actually rooted.
2. As i understood it it's not possible to back up the original rom? Is this correct?
3. If it is possible how can i do it?
4. What might be the problem with the flashing, clockwork etc? Am i doing something wrong?
Hope some one can help with this as i want to test how the new android version that came out is for playing games as i'm a ceo of a new android game company
Your phone is rooted.
You can make a nandorid (Backup in recovery) now.
There is no problem you just need to use the trackpad when in recovery. Both to navigate and to confirm.
doh, thanks, had totally missed that about the trackpad ie i'm noob
Hi
I rooted my htc desire with unrevoked method and entered clockworkmode recovery and made nandbackup. After reboot my htc deisre hang with logo on boot. I can stil acces bootloader and clockworkmode recovery. Whats wrong?
This is quite common.
You can do a full wipe and restore the backup you have made.

tnx for quick reply, if i do that do i lose root i have just made with unrevoked? i rooted my htc only to remove unnecessary like wether, news etc.
No, you will keep root.
Just restore the backup through clockworkmod.

I just got an HTC Desire A8181, and it is my very first time using an Android Device. The thing is that I already know that you can do a lot of things with Android devices (thats why I swapped from iOS to Android). Now here is my point, I basically need to know:
Basics about software and OS customizing for Android.
Basic things to know before do anything to my phone.
Tutorials for root the device (HTC Desire A8181)
Want to know if it is possible to make the phone work faster in terms of Manage the Processor and Ram Usage, how to do it, and understand the process.
And any other information that could be useful in order to make my phone work a lot better (take into consideration that I'm new with the OS and the phone, so there are a lot of things that I dont know about this theme.)
I also want to know if it is possible to install the latest Android Version on my HTC Desire and make it work fast.
Thanks in advance for your help!!!
The desire comes with sense 2.3 gingerbread. Sense is HTC's skin that they overlay ontop of the android operating system. Although it may look nice (doesnt really look that good to me), it is heavy and causes decreases in performance. When you s-off your device, and install a custom recovery you will be able to flash an aosp based custom rom. Aosp = android open source project, and basically means stock pure android...nothing running on top. As you can probably predict, this will result in faster speeds, less ram usage, and better battery. I think that answers the first few questions.
Next Ill move on to how to root it (make your phone good). I honestly think the term "root" is deceiving to most new users. I see people asking "how do i root my phone", but i think what they really want is to install a custom recovery and flash a custom rom. Being rooted on stock rom is pointless to me. Custom roms are where the good stuff is at.
Post your bootloader details here and ill walk you through the process. To get these details turn the phone off, then hold power + volume down until the phone boots into the bootloader. It should look similar to this. Post all of the first couple of lines at the top. The whole process summarized is this: s-off, install custom recovery, flash custom rom
There are also some other things that i would recommend doing so that you can have extra space for apps (you probably noticed you barely have any space at the moment), but ill get to that later when i give you more instructions.
Thanks for response so fast!

Nope, just your bootloader details for now.
Please tell me that I did not ****ed my phone
Ok so here is my problem now on, I tried to flash the CyanogenMod, but I dont know if i ****ed my phone or im just missing something...
Here is what I did:
1- I followed the instructions on another thread about the HTC_Unlock_Bootloader_Tool in order to unlock the bootloader.
2- I copied the CM-7.2.0.1-bravo.zip file into the sd card manually and also by using the "adb push" command.
But now my phone turns on, but every time that I try to access the Recovery option from the Fastboot menu just gives me an icon of the phone with a red advertise sign and then I press "Volume Up + Power" and got access to some sort of recovery options... But cannot go further than that... What can I do? Please tell me that I did not ****ed my phone?
When u unlock the bootloader u must then flash recovery via fastboot commands. In my sig ul see 4ext recovery as PB99IMG, download and extract the recovery.img and flash via fastboot. U can find a fastboot guide in bortaks troubleshooting guide (in my sig also)
Thanks for your response.

Ok so here is my new actual situation, cause I went to sleep at 3.00am just to keep working with the phone...
After check within some forums and stuff I realized that there was an app called ROM Manager that can flash the Recovery and also the ROM (Cyanogenmod is the one I want to install), I started researching for another way to do it since every single time that I tried to start in FastBoot and use the recovery option in order to flash anything I just got a black screen with an icon that seems to be the same phone with a red alert sign on its corner (icon which i really did not like at all!!!), so I started checking for another way to work with this and found ROM Manager, but when the app was installed and I tried to flash the ClockworkMod Recovery but ROM Manager was giving an error related with permissions, I thought that my HTC Desire was already Rooted since it said "*** Unlocked ***" on the Fastboot menu (My fault!) but I realized that it is not Rooted after download the Root Checker app from the Store... So basically here is the case resumed: Fastboot "Unlocked" (Via easy unlocker tool), ROM Manager App (Installed but no permissions to Flash the ClockworkMod Recovery nor CyanogenMod ROM), Root Checker App (Installed and seems that my phone is not rooted)... How do I need to proceed now on???
Thanks in advance for all your help! I never thought that Android were this complicated, but I like it ****ing so much!!! So I think that it is most likely a beginner issue

Well, to root it, you need to flash a Superuser zip from recovery. To flash it, you need a custom recovery. To get a custom recovery, you do what @jmcclue said 2 posts above.

Hahahahaha yeah sorry about that but I'm working so it is difficult to be on the phone talking about Hard Drives and troubleshoot them, while trying to figure out whats going on with my phone hahahahaha
So Basically and if I'm not mistaken (hopefully not, let me know if I am) I need to do the following:
-Download and Flash the 4eXT Recovery as PB99IMG from the previous response: After download the file can I go to CMD and use "adb reboot bootloader" then "adb fastboot flash recovery PB99IMG.zip" (that must flash the recovery right?)
-Then I need to Flash the Superuser from a Zip file: By accessing the new Recovery Interface installed previously, wipe chache / install from sd card / install from zip (that must root my device right?)
-After that I should be able to turn on my phone as normal and use the ROM Manager in order to Flash the CyanogenMod 7.2 right?
Sorry that I bother all of you in this way with so many question and ****, but I really want not only to flash my drive but also to learn about the process and what I'm doing to my phone... Thanks for everything.

You don't need to go to recovery for the PB99IMG method. Only bootloader.

Yes thats what you should do. If that doesnt work you would try flashing the recovery via fastboot.
When you go into recovery right now and see the red warning thing, that is normal. It is the stock recovery, which makes sense because you havent installed a custom recovery yet. Once 4ext is installed you will no longer see that screen.

Do this:

Then extract the .img file from the PB99IMG zip, and put it on your C drive, do the path would be C://recovery.img.

Unlocked does not mean s-off. You are Unlocked, but S-on. Just flash the recovery through fastboot, like jmcclue originally said.

With the 4ext recovery y created a first partition of 1024Mb as the ext of the system but my phone does not sees it, it keeps saying that only have 140Mb total as internal

Hey pals. I have an issue with my DHD...I am running CyanogenMod 10.1 and yesturday someone messed with the developer options and chose to emulate a 1024x760, or something like that, display. The phone froze and I had to remove the battery to shut it down...However when I try to do a factory reset through CWM recovery the phone freezes on the HTC logo and when I try to boot It freezes before reaching the home screen. I realized that this phone can't boot normally now cos the display emulation i talked about earlier is causing an issue, and the situation has been complicated by the fact that I cant use CWM recovery...So I cant acces the phone completely...So I am wondering if there is a way to undo that setting without using CWM recovery...Something like maybe removing the battery or opening it up n remove something for some time etc. Any help will be appreciated.
Hey
How did you root?
Are you S-OFF?

Get a ruu to restore at the last case if nothing works. BUT. Try to go to fastboot and flash recovery http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=46369904 from there since its probably a bad install
Sent from my HTC Desire HD using xda app-developers app

After that do fastboot flash recovery

Hey XDA_h3n what is a ruu? Could be worth a try since when i go to fastboot I have 4 options which are 1. Bootloader 2. Reboot 3. Reboot bootloader and 4. Power down. So I go for he reboot option n the phone just tries to reboot n it hangs again just before the home screen...Thanks

You are s-off dont use ruu, it may make you s-on.
Press Fastboot then do the flashing from cmd cd to your your-android-sdk-folder-location-here/platform-tools/fastboot.exe like cd c:/android/ then do fastboot flash recovery.img and make sure you have recovery.img in your tools folder. You can find a .img from the thread I posted previously (http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=2317202&d=1381475742) in this example extract it place .img in the platform-tools location and rename the .img to recovery.img
Flashing a ruu wont make you loose s-off, it makes you loose root. Two completely different things.
Your issue happened when you did the factory reset.
One possible solution is to:
Flash ruu
Flash a recovery
Flash rom
As long as your phone is recognized by your pc (which may not due to having done tue factory reset - can't remember if it does or doesn't), then you should be good to go.

Unfortunately the PC is not recognizing the phone anymore...Do u think I can do it by SD card...i.e renaming the stock ROM or Recovery to PD98IMG.zip and putting it on the root of SD card? I guess the solution has to not involve USB connectivity

Sounds reasonable, but not quite sure. I can't remember if you can flash a rom that way. I would suggest to do a proper search, read and see what you can find in that regard.

Well in my research (back in 2010) to flash a ruu with a previous version you need a gold card. After you get the ruu as a PDxxxxx.zip format (look for a desire hd one as others will brick your phone) and place it in the root of your sd card. Reboot your phone in recovery and press vol+ to flash, and wait for 10-20mins and your phone should be alive.
Some sd's dont work with gold cards (in my experience, a kingston 16gb didn't work but a samsung 8gb did for some reason)
I guess the journey just ended...I renamed the touch recovery zip file to PG....zip and booted into bootloader.
