WP7 Calendar v Birthdays and Holidays - Windows Phone 7 General

WP7 Calendar v Birthdays and Holidays
I’ve noticed that (unlike WM6.5) anniversaries and birthdays from “People” do not populate to the calendar in WP7 (Samsung Focus). This seems to somewhat defeat the purpose of entering said events in the people profile. Is this normal?
Also, these events, as well as Holidays, do appear on my Hotmail calendar, but unlike appointments which I enter manually, do not sync to the calendar on my device.
When I view the monthly calendar on my device, days on which I have appointments appear as a small line, so tiny I can barely see it. This is in contrast to the nice triangle in the corner on previous models. Is this normal?
Thanks in advance.

I hope i can help you. I have a google account with all my contacts and calender entries. I added my google account to my mozart, activate contacts, calender and e-mail under settings.
After syncing i have all my contacts, calender entries and my mails on my mozart.
Sorry for my english.
I hope this is usefull for you.

whats the best way to manage contacts?

Hi folks,
couple of questions around contacts.. both my wife and i now have the desire.. she just couldnt keep her hands off mine so i bought her one over the weekend..
She's keen to have her contacts in one place, set up calendar events for birthday etc.. Is that best done in gmail and then sync with the phone?
Also why can i see my facebook picture in messages (and can i get rid of it?) but i cant see my wifes when i get a message from her?
How do you get the contacts from the phone book into gmail?
Cheers,
Mick
It took me a while to figure out that there are 3 types of contacts
- phone
- google contacts
- facebook
Your phone contacts do not synchronize by default.
Google contacts are synchronized with your Gmail contacts (both ways).
Facebook contacts don't need an explanation
You can create all 3 types for one person and then link them (although you may experience some inconsistencies) so you will have one entry per person.
I myself have all the contacts saved as google contacts and I can manage them either in Desire or via my Gmail account.
so if you have phone contacts.. can you export them to google contacts?

Yes, you can. I exported my Phone contacts to the SDcard and imported them to my Gmail account.
Thanks - and in gmail then can you set up birthdays etc.. and the phone will then pop up reminders?
cheers for your help

Yes, you can manage your contacts via Gmail and sync them to your phone.
And about the birthday reminders - they do pop up (sort of).
I don't find the birthday notifications good enough. The phone reminds you 7 days in advance (which is too soon in my opinion) and only by showing you a little green sign in your phonebook. No sound, no vibration... nada.
I ended up creating an appointment for all my main contacts (using Google calendar, so it wasn't that big of a deal) so I would not forget them.
cheers - it would be nice alright if it would give you a pop up for appointments.. i guess the calendar is the way to go.. with gmail - can you set up appointments there.. and sync them with your phone? or do you use the phones calendar to set up appointments?
thanks,
mick
The synchronization works both ways. You can add/remove appointments on your Desire and they will be added/removed to your Google calendar (and vice versa).
EDIT: Desire can also show all your shared calendars as well (with corresponding colours). For example my wife shares her calendar with me (so I don't have to ask for the millionth time when some of her appointments are due) and I can see her entries marked in a different colour in my Desire's calendar.
The calendar sharing must be done from Google Calendar itself.
As for the notifications... I was trying to find an application which would extract birthdays from your contacts and either set them as appointments automatically or manage the reminders from the app. Unfortunately I was not able to find a working one.
My Favorite is using Google Contact method. So our contact will auto Sync with Google.. this is seamless backup solutions for me
Just bought my Desire
I wanted to start out clean, so I wiped out my Google contacts and calender.
Now I'd like to pull all of my FB friends to the phone and to Google Contacts, including birthdays into calender.
I've set up the sync to FB, and when going to People -> Online Directories -> FB I can see all of my FB friends, and can even call which ever of them has a phone number available on he's details, but for every contact who's details I want to see, the phone has to connect to the internet to retrieve that information, meaning it's not stored locally on the phone. Also, there are no contacts at People -> All.
Also, birthdays now appear on the phone's calender, but after syncing the phone calender with Google calender, I don't see any of that on there, meaning it doesn't sync ...
Another glitch is that although birthdays now all appear on the phone's calender, events which I have marked as attending on FB don't appear at all on the phone's calender.
Basically what I'd like is to copy all of my FB friends to my phone's memory as well as to Google contacts, and keep them linked and auto-synced.
Also to have all the birthdays that I already have on my phone's calender appear on my Google calender automatically, as well as FB events.
Is that too much to ask? :-X
Help would be much appreaciated...
So no ideas how to get it done... ?
Solution for birthday notifications
Go to a contact (any contact) and then go to the events tab (with the circle arrows). Press menu, go into settings, and there is your holy grail.
How does that help ... ? :-X

[Q] Why is one of my calendars suddenly toast?

Hi
I have seven calendars being synced and displayed together on my phone calendar application (HTC Desire Android 2.2 stock). One calendar containing my University schedules is suddenly toast, meaning that all regularly occuring events won't be visible anymore on my phone.
On calendar.google.com, as well as on my other calendar clients Windows Live Mail and Outlook 2010, my calendar seems perfectly fine. The calendar I'm talking about is linked to my primary Gmail Account, as are three other calendars. What did I do, and what can I do to fix this?
Single events are still visible...
Thank you in advance.
It just happened again! I lost all my recurring events on one of my calendars; my phone won't display them anymore. On calendar.google.com everything is still visible. Just like in my mail client.
Why does this keep happening to me?
Solution: I just found a quick workaround. In the HTC calendar app, just remove the calendar, then wait for synchronization. After that, add it again and synchronize again. Everything's displayed. I guess it might be a software bug.

Calendars, iCal subscriptions, and WP7

Have been delving into the murky world of online calendars a fair bit recently.
I've discovered that there are lots of cool online calendar services, and have availed myself of some...
Facebook - you can export all your facebook events as an iCal and then subscribe to it in Hotmail and/or Outlook
Tripit - the travel website that creates itineraries for you automatically when you forward them your booking confirmation emails. It can also publish the itineraries as iCals to add to your Hotmail / Outlook.
Icalshare.com - has loads of iCals, such as moon phases etc.
The great thing about these iCals is Hotmail/Outlook synchronizes with them, so, for instance, if you attend a new facebook event, it will automatically appear in your calendar without you having to do anything.
Herein lies the issue, though. When you add your hotmail calendar or your google calendar to your WP7 device, you only get the default calendar, i.e. the one you manually add your own events to. Your Tripit, Facebook, Birthdays, Holidays, Moon Phases and any other calendar feeds in hotmail or Gmail will NOT sync to your phone.
I've been trying to find a service that can aggregate all your calendars into one, so that you can set up WP7 to sync it, but with no luck thus far.
I'm hopeful that WP7 will soon be able to sync multiple calendars from one hotmail/gmail account, which would solve all my problems.
But until then, there doesn't seem to be a workaround, other than manually copying all the calendar entries over from the feeds in Outlook into your hotmail calendar, which is a pain. It's OK to do a once-per-year copy for holidays, moon phases etc., but things like Facebook Events and Tripit journeys update far more often.
There is a site called mashical.com which does indeed aggregate all your calendar feeds into one, but how on Earth do you get that onto your phone?
Maybe someone needs to write an App to present an alternative Calendar on your phone, together with a live tile, that can show your mashed icals.
food for thought eh?
I definitely agree. I've read of people using separate calendars with multiple hotmail accounts to sync but I don't want to have to log in to 4 accounts to sync my calendars.
In the meantime.. I had to manually add all my calendar events to one Google calendar until resolved, which is a pain.
Hoping for a fix also or an improved 3rd party calendar app.

Thing is, multiple Windows Live accounts doesn't work, as you cannot make a subscribed calendar the "primary" calendar for a windows live account, and it's only the primary calendar that gets synced.

It won't be the primary calendar. However, if you have 3 different hotmail accounts, (assuming a calendar with seperate events in for each account) you can add all accounts to your phone and chose the option to sync each individual calendar..All the events would show under the one calendar in your wp7
For example, I added 1 hotmail account, 1 live account, 1 google account. Each Account has it's own calendar with its own data in it. In my wp7...all the events from all the calendars sync to the one wp7 calendar. Crude method but it works.
On you wp7, it will simple show as Live Account 1, Live Account 2, etc. regardless if it was Hotmail or Live. If I misunderstood your reply, I appologize in advance.
On google calendar, you can import a ical or excel calendar file into your main calendar and merge them.
sorted.

Yes but it's a one-off import - any changes to the subscribed calendar do not make it into your main google calendar. So if you get a new Facebook event through, you would have to manually add it to your main calendar, which kinda defeats the point of icals - it's supposed to be an automated service.

Yes but you would end up with just multiple primary calendars, and primary calendars cannot contain ical entries, so that doesn't fix the problem at all, sorry!

Hi, I had the same problem. If you create an alternate Google calendar account there is a solution. Export your secondary calendar (school or work or whatever) and import it into youralternate Google account. Then via the alternate Google account, share that calendar with your main google account.
Add the alternate Google account to your wp7 phone and set to sync only calendar. Now your phone will have multiple calendars, and you only need to access your main Google account since the calendars are shared. I have 3 calendars working on my hd7.

This has already been suggested. The import is a one-off, so updates to the ical DO NOT go through into the primary google calendar. So new Facebook events, for example, would not get imported from the facebook ical into google. That's why it's a no-go, sadly. We need a way of integrating icals without having to do a manual one-off import. Importing is OK for icals that don't change (such as moon phases) but for dynamic icals like facebook and tripit, it's pretty much useless.
Hey Jim how about this?
Subscribe on outlook
download Google calendar sync
and set that calendar to sync every once in a while.
i'm pretty sure that's how i've set it up...it's been a while!
let me know how that goes
i'm not sure i understand the problem, but:
i have 4-5 gmail accounts, only sync one with my phone. the wife, the family, and a few friends subscribe to this calendar. they also share THEIR gmail calendars with me. then there are some additional iCal's i subscribe (share) to, and it's fairly simple. After someone updates an event, it shows up. I'm assuming it's like a push email ? Dunno, got me.
Maybe it's trying to use the different clients that's causing the problems ?

I can subscribe to calendars in outlook no problem, an dthey do sync automatically. Also, if I subscribe to calendars in Hotmail, they sync back to outlook, again no problem. The problem is getting those calendars onto the phone.
I'm not entirely sure what steps you're taking here, could you elaborate please?

So you subscribe to icals in google, and you managed to get them to show up on your WP7 device? How did you do that? I can get the primary calendar from a google account to show up on my phone, but not subscribed icals.

[Q] If I sync my Outlook calendar, does it sync only one or both ways?

So, I wanted to sync my work outlook calendar to my Evo. But, I don't want to share my calendar the other way. My question is if I sync my work outlook calendar will it only sync one way or expose all my personal calendar events to my work calendar?
In a nutshell, is sync two way or can I control it to be just one-way?
Thanks in advance.

I have my personal gmail account and my work's exchange account both syncing to my phone and my personal calendar stuff is kept separate from my work stuff. When I add an event to the calendar, it will default to my exchange calendar but i can chose while one it is sent to.
Attached is a screenshot from my "new event" screen. I can chose my google calendar, my wife's google calendar, a specific calendar I set up in google for work events, and my exchange calendar.
In a nutshell, your work calendar will sync both ways, but will only sync information entered in to it's specific calendar.
agreed - I've used ActiveSync calendaring with Exchange and it's bidirectional but completely separate from my Gmail calendaring (also bidirectional)

Outlook Calendar next event on Always on Display

G'day Team,
Has anyone found a way to get the Always on Display to show the next event from your Outlook Calendar?
I understand it will show the next event from the Google Calendar in Android 9 and have this working correctly however I want to display my Outlook calendar.
I've tried adding my outlook calendar to the Google calendar from within the app (which works in terms of showing the appointments within the app) but the Always on Display will only display events created within the Google Calendar directly.
I love this feature (as an ex-Windows Phone user) but use Office 365\Outlook not Google Calendar.
Any suggestions on how to get around this??
Many Thanks!
I am looking for the same, but I guess AOD is designed to show only Google Calendar events. On a side note, how did you manage to add outlook calendar within Google Calendar app?

you need to share your outlook calendar with either the google calendar or samsung calendar, you can go in google calendar, settings, manage calendar, add ouutlook calenar (put in your username/passoword) if its your personal email calendar, it will show up, if its your corporate calendar, your company would have disabled sharing of calendar for security reasons, and it will give error. check if you can share your corporate calendar to your gmail id. usually its blocked.
was able to successfully show the corporate calendar on AOD, go to the outlook app on your android, and select sync calendars, enable the toggle. it will sync the outlook calendar with the samsung calendar and it will show up on your AOD, just tried it on my s22 plus it works. after hrs of tinkering around.

Considering the Pixel 2XL isn't a Samsung device and doesn't have Samsung apps on board, he'd have to share the calendar with Google Calendar.
Not to mention that we both replied to a post that was dead and buried four years ago.
