Upsides/Downside of custom ROM? Recommendations? - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey, so Im kind of a noob at Android and I was wondering if I should install a custom ROM. Will I need to reinstall apps? Will I lose my data on SD/internal 8GB? Etc.
Thanks in advance

You won't loose anything on your SD card, and you can backup your apps with Titanium Backup (there're free and paid versions in the market). I'm running SkyRaider Sense (link in my signature) and I love it, super stable and it has some very nice features (reboot options, toggles in notification bar) and there are several nice themes a tweaks so you can get it just how you like it.

Well I looked at SkyRaider but it didn't seem like it was too much for me. So I'm downloading myn's warm two point two which brings me to my next question: what does wipe data/cache/dalvik do?

Factory reset basically its important when flashing a rom

Ah ok. If I don't wipe data is it ok?

It depends on how heavily the ROM has been modified, the further it is from you current ROM the more important it is to wipe. With that said I would suggest that you wipe, it's just cheap insurance.

I personally use my backup pro to restore apparently after a wipe it can do data like texts and what not as well

K 1 last question. How do I do it?
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App

K nvm it gives the option in ROM Manager. Thanks for the help!
EDIT:
myn's Warm Two point Two is now successfully flashed and I'm restoring data through MyBackup Trial and Apps through Titanium free as I type

Fresh Rom...somethings not right...help plz

ok new guy here..well not that new i used the how to that toast made then did the various AmonRA-sp updates all the way up to fresh 3.0
heres the problem (so far):
1.market opens then immediately closes, though this isnt a force close...?idk?
2. my contacts are there but they arent: people isnt working it force closes on me and i i cant recover any phone numbers through google or my sdcard backup.
well those are my problems, again im running the latest Fresh rom used Amon RA and did the apps2sd(the right way)
im really at a loss here fellas, i dont know what to do but im not gonna do anything until i can get some insight into this debacle.
thanks in advance
easy answer.... do it all again
or
dont use fresh
use Evio 1.1 or 1.2
i have tried most of the popular roms and this is by far the best, including the best battery life, stability, compatability, etc.
screw the havs and crap.. i tried those and got the worst battery life EVER from those. 6 hours tops... Evio i can go 2-3 times that, true... i get far farrr better battery life out of a pseudo stock rom than i do all the custom "stuff"
just flash with another rom... fresh is unique in itself and doesnt always play nice with certain other add-on's (from what i have read)
that is why in other threads you see custom builds for people using "fresh roms"
why mess with something that is so unique it requires its own builds for certain things.
so do i have to do apps2sd again
Just wipe your cache and davlick cache
have you tried wiping your cache & dalvik-cache and flashing gapps?
no not yet....gapps? where can i find that...forgive me i dont use forums ever lol
okay tried wiping both caches....same results.
how do i flash gapps? i searched the forums and all i get is the Fresh 3.xxx thread titled GApps and no source on the file itself.
OP of CM6. Just flash from recovery. You shouldn't need to wipe anything. But if you're gonna, just cache and dalvik.

okay that was what i was searching for...where is that download link located? searcdh function seems to not be helpful
It's in the CM6 OP just below the rom download link. Should say something like gapps8172010.

nope didi all three and still no market and com.w/e.people still force closes.
i dont have time for this so im flashing back to 1.0.1
thanks for the effort

[Q] ROM Install, Data Recovery

I was getting ready to install my first ROM and wanted to make sure that I had everything ready to go. I searched but wasn't sure on a definitive answer.
I'm on a Droid Incredible, Rooted, Titanium Backup installed, ClockworkMod updated to 3.0.0.5 using ROM Manager. I created a CWM recovery and backed up both data and apps with Ti Backup. I planned on flashing to the Incredibly Re-Engineered ROM using ROM Manager. From what I understand I will flash the stock ROM off and it will install the new ROM. What I'm not sure about is how I get the backed up data/apps reinstalled after the new ROM installed. Also, does the ROM flashing delete all data on internal/SD memory or only the ROM data?
Sorry if this has been answered already. I've read everything I could find on rooting and installing new roms and still not sure on this last step.
Thanks,
It's not a good idea to restore data from your apps once you install a new Rom..... if you have backed them up with titanium just restore apps not the data......

Will pictures, texts, contacts, etc all be flashed? Mainly trying to determine what I need to pull and what can stay on internal/sd card
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Pictures should be fine, as long as the SD card and EMMC don't get formatted. Texts however will all be deleted, as they are located in the system. I use SMS backup + from the market, it backs them up to GMail. Works perfectly.
For contacts, I would export them to the SD card (menu - export), but I always have all of mine sync to Google. That way they always auto restore when I flash ROM's.
But as always, I would definitely back up any important pictures you have anyway.
I have contacts synced to my Google account. I think I have a pretty good handle on how everything will react. Thanks for the help

Also, you really should upgrade to CWM 3.0.0.8, in Rom Manager scroll down to all recoveries, and choose 3.0.0.8. 3.0.0.5 has some wiping issues that can cause a lot of problems. That way when you wipe, it actually wipes
Also, your not flashing the rom off, your flashing the new rom over the old one and that erases it
Sent from my LiquidLight using XDA App
ok. So after I do a data/cache/delvik I'll Flash from CWM and be good to go. Thanks for the 3.0.0.8 tip. got it taken care of as well.
Yep, your golden. Just curious, what rom are you flashing?
Sent from my ADR6300
Flashing a new Rom won't touch your SD card unless u specifically format SD. With cwm 3.x I usually wipe data/cache 2-3 times as there was an issue with it not wiping properly at one point. Supposedly its fixed but I like to err on the side of caution. With titanium I think its generally ok to restore data on the items in green but not any in red. I have yet to have issues doing things that way ymmv.

I was going to try incredibly re-engineered. Looked like it was extremely stable and I like the sense calendar/social integration while being able to theme. Any recommendations for others to try?

Some more details would be spectacular, such as which apps you're trying to use that give you that error. Do any other root apps work? What method did you use to root? Do you have the 'super user' app installed on your phone? When you boot to the bootloader, does it show Ship S off or Ship S on? What method did you use to flash the rom? Did you do it manually in recovery, or did you use ROM Manager?
When I boot to recovery it shows s-on. I don't remember the exact app name but it was used to manage power and cpu usage to boost performance. I used unrevoked root method found on xda.

I flashed rom from sd manually via zip

Okay, you should be S off, not S on. Since you have custom recovery installed, you need to download the unrevoked forever s off tool, and flash it in recovery. Then boot back to your bootloader, and be sure that you're S off. At that point, I'd boot back to recovery, do a full wipe (data/factory reset, cache, dalvik cache, and flash calkulin's format all.zip), then reflash your rom. See if it works after that.
Much appreciated friend. To be continued.

Not a problem. And if you are on the newest version of clockwork recovery, you may not be able to flash that Calkulin's Format all.zip. You may need to flash King's format all zip instead, which I will attatch for you. Just remember, that after you flash either of the Format all.zip's, you need to flash a new ROM before you boot up. Once you flash the Format all.zip, everything geti's wiped, and you won't be able to boot up.
So instead of calkulins use kingsmod? Now.I don't wipe again one I use kingsmod do I?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Nevermind. Flash the format all.zip then flash rom.

That is correct. Don't try to boot after flashing format all, until you first flash a ROM. Let me know how you make out

Correct, they both do the same thing, except king's is edify compatible, which makes it gingerbread and clockwork 3.0+ friendly.
Also...kings black titanium is my first flashed rom. I like it...but I don't want to miss out on something better. I am sure I will try other roms ...but in the meantime...any suggestions for performance and stability roms. I've seen screenshots of overclocked phones....the response of my current rom is great...but I am into full customization. Any ideas from those who know?

...sounds like you should try CM7
I recommend CM7. You just need to download and flash the latest gapps with it.
Someone wanna give the pros and cons of cm7? I have heard it plenty of times. Same type of thing right? I can flash cm7 straight from. Zip on my sd card?

When u say gapps that's foreign to me...I am still noob. Is this a cynagen rom. I see alot of screen shots with people clocking their androids way ocmver the stock 1 gig. How do they accomplish this. Sorry for all the questions.

http://goo-inside.me/gapps/latest/7/universal/ < gapps [google apps] you flash them in recovery after flashing a new gingerbread rom, its so that your market, gmail, ect installs and work. And CM7 offers a lot of customization, plenty of themes, ect. You can overclock your phone using setcpu or from settings > cyanogen mod settings > performance > cpu settings. The only real con is a few select apps don't have gingerbread support yet, like juice defender, I believe. And if you want to update your PRL, you have to flash a sense rom, update, flash back, but that's easy.
Okay so that zip file is the gapps for cm7 rom? Now is the cm7 fast and responsive and is it a gingerbread based rom? I've been doing this replying back and forth from my phone...havent done the research yet.

PERFECT!!!
Okay now I am S-OFF. Thanks for the help guys...also...i was peeping in on mikifroyo 4.6, if i can get another lead on flashing roms...first data/factory reset, then wipe cache, then wipe dalvik, then i can flash new rom? Or do i need to flash a format all.zip first?
im running myns warm 2.2 i love sense i've been to cm7 and back a hundred times that with netarchy's 4.3.1 kernel is nice fast pretty decent battery life too but ya gotta give it day or so to see better life and lots of mods for myns too. id rather wait for gingerbread til someone other than cm to come out with one

[Q] Nightlie help?

Alright guys so forgive me if this is a double post but I can't seem to find the answer anywhere. I've been looking into Nightly roms and I've found that I really like the concept. However, I've been flashing these Nightlies as if I've been flashing an entirely new Rom. What I mean is I've been doing full titanium backups then boot to cwm and wipe data factory reset and wipe dalvik and finally flash new nightly and reboot. I hate having to wait for titanium to reinstall all my apps and data though. I mean titanium is a neat idea but not as a nightly restorer as it just takes way too long. So I feel like I might be missing something but my general question here is can I get away without doing a full data wipe when moving to a new nightly? And will this ultimately save all of my apps and data? Thanks for any help guys

If its same rom just an update, as in nightlies, u just wipe cache + dalvic. Full wipe not necessary. All ur data will b there. I never fully wipe unless it's a new Rom.

Cool thanks man. I've never wiped a cache before at all though....what's the point?

Its the same thing, except his apparently doesn't wipe dalvik [from what I heard], and his isn't edify compatible, i.e. won't work on CW 3.0+.
I use ra but can I back up with mybackup root and restore after or just start all over I mean the settings and home and all I got it all set up already I would hate to do it all over again.

deodex: easier to tweak, lighter on ram, heavier on space.
odex: easier on space, tougher on tweaking and ram usage.
Personally, I'd go with a deodexed rom if you're using sense.
