I've recently rooted (unrevoked) and flashed my HTC Desire with Cynogen 6.1.
This worked for the first couple of days until my phone suddenly turned off. Now I cannot get it to boot past the white HTC bootscreen, unless I flash it again with a custom rom (tried Cynogen again, OpenDesire and Miui) with a complete factory reset. Then it will boot once into Android, but after a reboot the same problem occurs.
I've been reading numerous topics on this and similar problems and it seems I have to unroot my phone. Is this correct? On some sites there are warnings you should not root/unroot with a certain hboot version. Is this still the case?; because the unrevoked method states that it rootes no matter what the hboot version is.
So I'm planning to go back to stock now by following the unlocker.com unroot tutorial and flashing a htc europe stock rom (I have the HTC Desire from T-Mobile Dutch).
I'm posting this topic to double check, because I do not want to brick my phone completely
Thanks in advance.
You are right, just flash a stock rom and start rooting again. It doesn't matter anymore which boot version you are using. You have a go
Ok, thank you, will do and will post my results here ;-) I understand from you answer that unrooting and rooting again may fix this issue?
It's possible, you could also try a different SD card. Maybe that is also causing the problems, but unroot first and if that doens't solve it, try switching your sd card. Make sure you use at least a class 4.

Hey all,
I decided to root my HTC Desire today, via unrevoked3; everything went alright.
I later installed ClockworkMod Recovery, and flashed the ClockworkMod recovery image. I tried to make a backup from inside the ClockworkMod Recovery app (ROM Manager). The phone reset, loaded the ClockworkMod recovery image, but then failed backing up, complaining about "failed signature verification". (I should mention at this point that my phone could still boot up.)
I searched the forums a bit, and someone suggested to just select backup/restore from within recovery mode. I did so, and the backup completed.
After that, the phone reset... but now, it sits at the white HTC screen and won't go any further. Every 30 seconds or so, the screen goes black for a bit, then the white HTC screen comes back (phone restarts, I assume). Also, I should mention that I can still get into the bootloader & recovery mode (Clockwork), if that helps.
I wouldn't mind reimaging my phone via one of the Desire RUU packages, as I was planning to upgrade my rom/radio anyways...
Anyone have any suggestions? I'm rather new to the android community, so help a newbie out!
Thanks in advance.
If I were you I would first try to clear data/restore to factory settings from recovery.
Failing that I would restore the backup you made.
If that didn't work just flash a custom rom (clear data again).
If all of that still fails flash the RUU.
Hey, thanks for the info & reply.
I ended up doing a factory wipe, and flashing a custom rom (MoDaCo)
Everything seems to be working order... thanks again!
I have a question / issue somewhat related to this. I have the USCC version of the HTC Desire. I have it rooted via unrevoked forever. I created a goldcard following the guide on modaco. I placed the rom I was trying to flash over to on the root of the SD card (leeDrOiD in this case). The rom flashes over successfully, but it will never boot up. It stallsl at the white HTC screen. It will never go past this. I did a wipe before hand as well. I have hboot 0.98.0000. That's the only thing I can think of that is different from the other forums I've seen. My radio is 2.05.10.06.29. I have tried several other roms as well. I can easily flash back to a backup I made of the stock rom, but I really want to use a custom one to get to 2.2. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Hi everyone, I've come into a strange problem with my G2 and I bet someone here can help me out! I just got a refurbished G2 because my last one had display problems. I tried to root with one with gfree (05) and I ran into a couple of errors so I rebooted my phone and used the rage method. Anyway, I downloaded rom manager and flashed CWM 3.0.2.4 so I could flash that leaked gingerbread build. It wouldn't work for me, so I flashed xborders' version and it's all good. I went to flash the stock rom (to go back) and when it reboots it stays stuck on the HTC splash screen. The same thing happens with CM7, or any other rom I've tried recently. I let CM7 flash when I went to sleep, when I woke up it was still stuck on the HTC screen.
I'll explain what I do:
1. Flash superwipe g2
2. Flash the rom in recovery
I accidently deleted my froyo nandroid but I have one from xborders rom so I at least have a usable phone. Could my sd card be messed up? I've tried it on the two I have.
I had this problem with my other phone too, no matter what I tried I couldn't get CM7 to work. Now it seems like no roms are working.
After I do flash a rom, it doesn't say reboot system like I think it should? I have to hit back to go back into the recovery menu.
Ended up fixing the problem, thanks to anyone who looked at this!
Care to tell us how you fixed in case someone else comes to this thread for reference?
He probably didn't root the phone properly or the partition table has been messed up. To fix something like that just flash a stock ROM that you know works on the phone and from there you can use any root method to get SuperCID, Permanent ROOT, an unlocked HBOOT and ClockWorkMod. Then any rom designed for the G2/DZ should be flashed just fine as long as the requirements are met.
Hey mates,
would be cool if you could help me to understand the connection between recovery and flashed rom...
This is why I'm asking: I rooted my desire a couple of weeks ago (by applying the unrevoked method). Since then I flashed a couple of custom roms. I wasnt very happy because the most roms caused my mobile phone to crash. I thought it was because a broken sd card therefore i bought a new one today. Sometimes when my phone crashed I wasnt even able to enter recovery anymore. And sometimes it did just nothing... I couldnt even enter hboot (it just didnt boot - like it was briked - only the charging led was on when i plugged the charger in). In this case I had to remove the battery a couple of times or plug in the charger. Usually I needed to do this many times. This is btw. why I'm fed up with custom roms but maybe its just my mistake. And now finally my question:
Why can I enter recovery sometimes and sometimes not? Does this depend on the rom? Why do I have to remove the battery etc. to make it run?
I know flashed back to the rom I of which I created a backup after root. But it seems that my phone is more unstable since then (even if its just my rooted stock rom)
Thank you for your answers...
What rom are you on? Maybe your recovery is a bit messed, have you tried reflashing it? Btw, s-on right?
If your not able to get to your hboot then there is something wrong with your phone. It will most likely be able to do with your hardware. You can use an ruu to restore everything back to factory default. You could then root again and see if that will help. But it does look like to be a hardware/corruption issue.
Swyped...
Your Desire maybe being one of the new PVT4 new nand would might cause this. I know that the latest version of unrevoked and Clockwork recovery can't be used to root the PVT4 new nand. I had that problem and the fix for me was to use an earlier version of unrevoked and flash Amon Ra recovery instead. There's a thread around the forums regarding this. Check first if your Desire is of the new PVT4 model. Can't post the link but there's a thread that explains how you can check if your Desire is PVT4 new nand. Would post the link but can't yet, but a quick search should take you to it.
hey guys, thank you very much for your fast answers. The desire is s-on. I'll try an official ruu. If I'm brave enough I'll root again . The strange thing is that I can enter recovery but not always. A hardware issue would be awful. I'll let you know how it went. I hope it is ok to just use ruu to update a rooted rom. It flashes a new recovey too, doesnt it?
Ok, i tried to use ruu to unroot my device. It told me that my bootloader was not compatible and canceled flashing. But it also broke my rom. I couldnt boot the system anymore and i couldnt boot into recovery. I dowloaded a ruu image (with my radio) to flash it via hboot. Everything seemed to go fine but after the first restart i'm stucking with an update sign (i guess its the recovery menu) - a mobile with green arrowrs. I think its frozen. Do i need to do anything else?
Hey, just to keep you up to date. I successfully unrooted my device by flashing a stock ruu. Now its booting (but not always) but it often freezes after a few minutes after the boot progress. I guess I'm going to send it back.
Thank you all for your help anyway.

Yeah best to send it back, it sounds more like a fault with the device
I've tried to root my phone, it didn't work, so I want to go back to my 2.2 stock, can anyone describe a quite detailed guide for me? I'd love you forever. =D

explain a bit more what is with your phone, what you did in what state is,rooted or not s-off or not and so on
If you tried rooting your phone through alpharevX but were unable to (that is your phone is not rooted) and now when you try to turn it on it goes into a sort of blocked state showing a phone with a triangle next to it or you want for whatever reason to get your phone back to 'brand new' state (factory settings)..... (beware this will only work if you haven't flashed your phone with some other ROM) all you need to do is turn it back off, then push the volume-down button and the power button (volume button first, then keeping the first still pushed the other)... now go to clear storage (use volume buttons up and down to navigate and the power button to confirm) so push the power button then the volume up button that's it....
Mind you if you have an PC49IMG.zip file on your sd card you are gonna have to delete it before doing this.
Thanks for the replies, but I've managed to instal Cyanogenmod so I don't longer need to go back to FroYo. =)

Lol, own.
Any idea if floating around there is a base ROM for the HTC Wildfire so as to restore to its out-of-box system ROM.
Ideally something I can use from ROM Manager.
I'm asking because twice I've used the stock RUU restore prog and it has un-rooted my HTC Wildfire

Check Safe Flash RUU's in Point 5 of 1st post of this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1029318
They are untouched stock ROM's, offered as a flashable ZIP.
Problem
I have nearly the exact same situation, except my phone(when turned on) gets stuck at the boot screen(telstra next g) i think i will use the stock 2.2 RUU to get back to the stock un-rooted ROM
I gained S-OFF with alpharevX beta and used gingerbreak to get root. I tried to get into clockwork mod, after using root toolbox to install it, to install cyanogen mod 7 but it would not load. HTC Wildfire, 2.2.1 Froyo,
Did you perform a full wipe before flashing the Cyanogenmod ROM file? Not doing so leads to bootloops, as you have described.
I did not even get to flash cyanogen mod. I cannot get into recovery. I chOose recovery but it goes to fast boot please help
I tried to use the stock RUU for 2.2 but it would not find my device, i tried twice. Once while it was stuck at the boot logo and the second time at the fastboot menu. Please help! I tried a clear data (htc wildfires take on hard reset) and it is still just stuck on the logo
i found a fix! i went into fasboot and ran the RUU on another computer with HTC Sync installed and it worked perfectly! i have now got clockworkmod installed and working excellent!
I am a newbie in this rom flashing land.
I managed to root my Desire this morning using unrevoked 3 method. It was successful. I then installed Rom Manager (free) from Market and tried to make a backup. It ran smoothly until the phone rebooted. The reboot looped at HTC logo.
After searching around, I go to Recovery and restore the newly backup image and the phone went back online. I thought I had bricked my Desire already. .
I have the following questions, please enlighten me:
1) What might cause the shocking loop?
2) In the unrevoked 3 program, I notice that the "Disable Security" was checked when I managed to root the Desire. Does that mean I have S-OFFed the Desire as well in the process? If it is still S-ON, how can I tell and if I download a ROM and try to flash it (I still don't know how), will there be any undoable problems?
Thanks
1. Probably ROM Manager - use the flashed recovery - it works all the time.
2. Unrevoked3 does not S-OFF your phone, you need alpharev for that. To make it sure turn off your phone and reboot to bootlader (Holding VOL- and POWER keys). For the ROM part, check each ROM's thread for requirements to avoid problems.
Hi nqk.
I have only been looking into rooting for a couple of weeks and had the very same experience as yourself. (and the security off bit too). Bricked already!!
Before I had S-Off I tried both CM7 and oxygen, they both worked ok, but if your reason for rooting is the gain memory with the desire I would certainly say go down the alpharev road and use a new HBoot.
The stickies on the development section really do explain it well for us "noobs".
Currently I am running Oxygen 2.1.4, Alpharev oxygen r2 HBoot and S-Off running a 1GB ext4 partition.
Just so giddy with the amount of space available!!
I flashed new custom rom with s-on and stock hboot. Everything is fine so far.

few times when I have rooted using unrevoked3.21 and run a backup from Clockwork recovery 2.5.0.8 (?) it has stuck on the htc screen... not a great problem as I have usually flashed it straight after - but still annoying

It happened to me when it was still connected with pc via usb cable. You can try removing that.
