Hi everyone!
My Desire is unrooted with T-mobile banding running Froyo. I use o2 as provider.
The phone tells me that there is an OTA update 2.12.110.4 and let's me download. However it is not being installed. The respective zip file is only downloaded and saved to "/sdcard/download" - rebooting does not help... opening the zip does not help.
Searched the forum and many others. Only found solutions for unrooted devices. Any ideas on this?
Thanks a lot.
All the best...
Dennis

Hi everyone,
I tried that...
I renamed the file to "update.zip" and moved it to the root of the sd card.
When I highlight recovery and press power to select the phone searches for the file on sd but does not seem to find it.
Then my Desire automatically turns black after probably a second and a half and starts to boot where it hangs until I take out the battery.
Then I can boot normally...
Also tried to rename the file in the sdcard/download folder to update.zip... also copied it to a "clean" sd card...
It's like the file is not recognized...
hmmm... any other ideas?
Regards
Dennis

You should wait for phone to search SD (not pressing or highlighting anything) and only then:
- Highlight recovery and press power to select
just dont rush.
Tried that as well. It's quite fast, but if I read it correct (when the phone checks) it says that it does not find an image...

I tried with different SD cards (1 GB, 2 GB, 4 GB, 16 GB). I also tried it with the card I usually use (16 GB). Tried it with the card that originally came with the phone (4 GB with all original data on it - out of the box). Formatted the 4 GB card to FAT32, FAT, NTFS... nothing seems to help. Also tried it with SIM card and without SIM card... so basically I tried lots of different combinations to get this running.
But still no progress. As soon as I select recovery and press the power button the phone restarts and I get a pinkish small pic (probably due to the T-Mobile Branding) and nothing else...
Stayed on that screen for at least 30 minutes. Nothing happened. So everytime I try that I'll have to take out the battery, place it back in... just to get the phone started again - just to get the reminder from my phone that there is a system update ready to be installed.
I hope this helps to understand my phone's problem.

Hi,
Are you actually rooted or unrooted? Not 100% clear in your first post.
If you're rooted, you shouldn't really be running OTA updates.

My understanding was that he used to be rooted on that phone, then unrooted to get some old update. But I could be wrong - why would he possibly do that?
My Desire is not rooted. Never been rooted.
Just the T-Mobile Germany branding... out of the box.

Right, do you have the OTA file renamed update.zip?
If so, make sure its on the root of your SD card and once you load into HBOOT and it can't find a ZIP file, highlight 'Recovery' and press power to select. Once at the black screen with the red ! hold volume up and press power and select 'apply SD:update.zip' and follow the instructions
Job done
Would you want to debrand the handset to get rid of the orange bloatware?

You will have noticed you can't 'fastboot boot' the recovery image again for rooting or using the new recovery image.
However:
You can use flashrec to flash the patched recovery, from where you can do all the usual stuff (and even put the old hboot back on if you want!)
Notice:
flashrec is using an exploit that isn't patched yet in the current kernel used by HTC, however if/when HTC patches this, flashrec will stop working.
So for now it's ok but a next version might have patched this, so keep this in mind !
Thanks for the original headsup by Magnus and Modaco, adapted from here
Quick Howto:
1. On your phone, goto Settings, Applications, and make sure Unknown source is checked ON.
2. On your phone, goto Settings, SD card and phone storage, and click Unmount SD card.
3. Then click Format SD card (it should automatically remount after this).
4. Plug the phone into the compuer via USB, then pull down the notification bar and click on the SD card notification. Then click mount.
5. Download this APK and recovery image and save it to your computer:
flashrec-20090815.apk
Cyanogen’s / Modaco Hero Recovery Image
Update: updated flashrec here
6. Extract the cm-hero-recovery.img out of the MoDaCoPatchedRecovery-1.0.zip and put it somewhere on your computer.
7. Save both the cm-hero-recovery.img and the flashrec-20090815.apk to your computer, then copy them both to your SD card
(do NOT put them inside any folders on the SD card, just put them in the root of the SD card itself).
8. Unplug the phone from the computer once they are downloaded to the SD card.
9. Goto the Market and download Linda File Manager or any file manager program if you do not already have one.
10. Open the file manager and goto SDCard and then find the flashrec-20090815.apk file and click on it.
If asked, tell it to use Package Installer to open it. It should automatically install the apk.
11. Open the FlashRec program and click on Backup Recovery Image and wait for it to finish.
12. Once done, click on the empty text box in the FlashRec program and type:
sdcard/cm-hero-recovery.img
Then click on the Flash Custom Recovery Image button and wait for it to finish.
13. Turn off the phone and turn it on into Recovery mode by holding down Home and Power to turn it on
(keep holding until the recovery screen comes up has a bunch of text on a black background).
As long as that screen comes up, you have done it correctly and can now go and load other ROM/hboot/whatever.
Excellent, worked perfectly! Thanks!
I flashed the new official update from HTC, but i do got a nandroid from before when my phone was rooted, do you know if restoring that will make any changes to the hboot? And will i get root again? Or is this method that you posted over, the only way so far?
Root
I did all this with the orginal 2.73 update and booted in to the recovery mode (worked fine..) but i still dont hav root
I tried the other method from theunlockr.com to but still no root..
I followed this excellent tutorial, then I just ran the root tutorial again. Worked flawlessly.
Worked fine - thx m8
Is it possible to make this without a sd card?
Because my phone doesn't detect my sd card. Now i have the problem that i can't do anything on my phone because i can't get into recovery mode...
Anyone who knowes a solution???
Thanks in advance.
works perfectly, many thanks !
I get this "downloading 'boot.img'... FAILED (remote: not allow)" when i type "fastboot boot cm-hero-recovery.img" any one know what is wrong ?
you have uploaded the recovery image by that apk, be sure to boot your phone holding POWER+HOME NOT power+back, then you can continue to root your phone, hope i could help you
Ok, But what to do when i boot up with power+home ?
then you have to root your phone again like it is described in
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4257045&postcount=38
i would recommend you to make a backup with nandroid (just select it and push the track ball) and then continiue with

When I followed the instructions, everything worked, until I have to restart with Home button pressed.
I see the HERO word on my screen, but nothing else happens.
Has someone some suggestions?

SOLVED:
In the first page there is a link to flashrec-20090815.apk. That did not work for me.
I used http://code.google.com/p/flashrec/ to download the file.
Thank you for your interest in reading my post.
First of all, I'd like to thank chlinkchlink for finding out about some rooting instructions on XDA.cn. It has been a pain in the nuts to root this thing but it seems like the chinese folks over there were able to crack it. I am not the author of the script, I'm just putting all this together for everyone to enjoy. Also, thanks to the people of XDA.cn for their work.
I know GingerBreak works on some roms, but recent firmware versions have been fixed to not work with GingerBreak, one example is the Bell Canada firmware variant.
So far this method works on:
Stock European ROMs (tested by sammyke007)
Bell Canada ROMs (tested by me)
Asian ROMs (tested by XDA.cn)
T-Mobile ROMs (tested by Tera Tike)
Requirements:
A Wildfire S with unlocked bootloader or S-OFF. If your bootloader is still locked, head to HTCDev.com to unlock it.
A PG76IMG.zip file (custom recovery UI). Attached to this post you will find a custom UI by XDA.cn. Alternatively you can use ClockworkMod Recovery from this post. Whatever zip you use, is fine, but I would totally recommend ClockworkMod for its great features.
A root.zip file (the root script). Attached to this post.
A microSD card on your phone formatted FAT32.
What does it do?: The script will install the su binary, busybox and superuser on your phone.
NOTE: There is a newer easier methot to root your phone called Unlock Root. Its a one-click root. Read this post for more info.
Step 1: Flashing the Custom Recovery UI by XDA.cn
Again, make sure your device is S-OFF.
Again, make sure your memory card is formatted FAT32.
Place the PG76IMG.zip file into your phone SD card.
Disable Fast Boot from your phone settings (Settings > Power > Disable Fastboot)
Turn your phone off.
Hold down the "power" button and the "volume down" button for a few seconds till you see the HBOOT screen.
Don't press anything. The system will scan for some files and it will prompt you for an update. Move the cursor to OK (volume up) to start the flashing process.
After it finishes, press the "power" button to restart the system.
Let Android boot and delete the PG76IMG.zip file from your SD card via USB.
Congrats! Custom recovery has been installed. Process to step 2.
Step 2: Flashing the rooting script by XDA.cn
Copy the root.zip file into your phone SD card.
Turn your phone off.
Boot into recovery: Hold down the "power" button and the "volume down" button for a few seconds till you see the HBOOT screen. Let it do its thing and then select "RECOVERY".
At the recovery menu, use the volume buttons to select "install zip from sd card".
Then select "choose zip from sd card".
Then find the "root.zip" file on the list.
Select "YES".
Let the script do its thing till you see "Install from sd card completed".
Select "Go Back" on the menu till you find the "power off" option and select it.
Turn your phone back on and let Android boot.

That's it. Superuser will be installed on the phone along with Busybox and the su binary. You will be able to allow access to applications needing root permissions now.
Troubleshooting:
Q: Superuser force-closes when an application requests for root permissions.
R: It will not FC when the 1st app requests permissions, but will FC when a 2nd app does. It happened to me on the Bell Canada firmware. It can be fixed by clearing the Superuser application data and then running Superuser from the app drawer. It will request an update of the 'su' binary, and once installed, the error wont ocurr anymore. You can also download the latest Superuser application from the Android Market.

Since two weeks my wifi has got her Wildfire S.
And sadly it didn't came with a already S-Off Hboot.
So we where and still waiting for a soft s-off.
Yesterday i e-mailed the dutch HTC department with the question if they are going to unlock old phones.
Well, today i got a mail with there reaction and they say that they are working on a OTA update to unlock all HTC devices.
I'm still waiting for a answer when this update is going to be released.
But this is good news, right.
Edit:
Just got a answer, time of realease is onknow :-(
Think that might be August-September time as that is when they are releasing the other unlocks.

Dear Friends,
After my hectic work load I was trying to concentrate on solving the Camera problems when I submitted Aroma based Rom following "bgcngm" of his " [ROM][03-08-2013] ZTE V987 (MT6589) custom ROMs (JB)".
It met with difficulties of Camera problem when was trying to fix it. In the mean time I experimented with several other Rom that has the same board features of MicroMax Canvas 4 -A210. Though many of them are booting but they had one or other problems. Then I copied the required ediiting by copying and pasting in the stock rom to make the phone booting with all its stock performance. All these days, most of them might have used to do with the stock version, I retained the stock version and build the ROM in the other way round.
The Rom is up loaded to Google Drive and the url is given.
TUTORIAL:
PLEASE BACK UP / PERFORM NANDROID BACKUP YOUR ROM BEFORE FLASING THIS ROM FOR SAFTY
Some time you loose your IMEI, kindly back it up using the Mobileuncle mtk tool.
1. If you are not used for Smart Phone Flash Tool(SPFT), then you can directly flash using the flash tool facility provided in the phone. Put off your Phone. Wait for about half or one minute or till the phone vibrates. Hold simultaneously the Volume up/down button and Power button and touch the home touch key. Then the phone displays two option.
Recovery Mode - Volume up
Factory mode - Volume down
Press the volume up and 3 option will pop up and in the middle you can find the Fastboot Mode. Pressing volume down you can get into the Fastboot Mode. Now open the folder "direct cwm flash 5.5.0.4" and double click on the file "fastboot flash.bat". Now you have installed the CWM Recovery 5.5.0.4 into your phone.
2. If you are on stock version of the ROM or in custom ROM, just copy the XXXmicMAX.zip file into your external sdcard.
3. As the rom is only partially rooted it is necessary to Root the phone externally. I will upload a rooted version in couple of days. To Root the phone I have provided the UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.65.zip. Copy this file to your external Sd card.
4.By pressing volume up/down, power and touching the home key get into the CWM recovery mode.
I. Choose install zip from sd card and then choose zip from sd card. Select the zip file XXXmicMAX.zip file you have just coped and install it. Wait for about a minute or two.
2. After the Update is completed again you go to the file UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.65.zip and install.
3. After installation of these two file you reboot your phone.
The phone will boot with screen showing Android is updating.
Enjoy.

Enjoy.

Dear brother,
You install it and see the functioning. Even I have installed the Xposed Installer in my personal phone. Install and enjoy.
I already informed. I copied many required files into the stock files to make it working with the trial and error procedure. Just put some files into the bin, some files into the lib, some files into the vender some file into Xbin and experimented. It is simple copy and past that suits to the system of the phone to get the boot and stock performance. We can not say the the stock performance is all that bad. You can install camera FV-5 also which i have in my personal phone.
Just give me some ideas to improve. I have not beatified my presentation which is not important.
Please suggest some improvements to increase the performance. The battary drain has stopped to about 30% in my phone. But it depends on individual usage. I am only a learner in this game and as a hobby I pass my time peacefully.
Thanks.

Fantastic!
Great news!
Thanks for the instructions. Can anyone confirm if this works on the Find 7 X9076?
Just tested and it works great [Find 7 X9076].
Recovery and root access. Done!
Thank You. :good:
I can load the recovery, but as soon as I press Volume + or - within the recovery I have the following error message:
E:touch_calibrate: EVIOCGABS failed
From there on, if I initiate the touch screen UI by touching any part of the screen, I can no longer use Volume +/- and Power button combination properly. as soon as I use any of those button, it just automatically launch the first option that is on whatever the recovery menu is.
Am I the only one having this issue?
Thank you. This worked. (Find 7 X9076)

ok thanks, at least that is consistent between phones. Unfortunately i m not smart enough to do any fixings, hope this get highlighted and resolve in the future version of the recovery.
Yeah, it's still early though. Just glad it's working this well.
Hi,
Worked fine for me, thanks for the clear easy to follow guide. I noticed the error E:touch_calibrate: EVIOCGABS failed on the screen but all movements in the recovery seemed fine, I used physical keys first then tried the touch screen and that worked too.
At the end of the process it asks if you want to prevent the ROM from flashing the default recovery, I choose yes. Might be worth adding that for completeness as some people might be unsure.

Just been back into the recovery to do a backup. Which ever button you press you get the error but all the buttons work fine. This sounds like a daft question but you are not getting the buttons back to front are you. On the Find 7 the volume buttons and power buttons are reversed to a lot of phones and it's easy to press power instead of volume.
Sorry if this is not the case. It's just it seems to respond to everything for me and that might explain why you were entering on the first option. Could you double check?
worked for me too
Works great on X9076, thanks OP!:good:
after that we must return to stock recovery if we want to update via ota?
No. I received an update yesterday when I reverted to.colorOS but kept the gummy recovery

Worked on the X9077 too but it didn't recognise my exFAT formatted external card...
Also, like TWRP, it's half size.... Which proves it's not the size but how you use it that matters...

I think it doesn't like exFAT, FAT32 seems to work ok but that seems silly to me to have a kickass hd screen and not use it with hd movies...
Stock Recovery
How can I backup my Stock recovery image before flashing this. Or is the Stock X9076 Recovery already available for download?
Can official Oppo Stock Roms (ColorOS 1.2.1i for example) be installed with this recovery?
Fasboot not working
which system did you use it?
- I tried to Windows 8.1 x64 with USB 3, and I could not find the find 7 (x9076). No detect the phone.
Do you have any idea, how I can use it?

Use Win 8.1 64bit too.
Make sure you are going to fastboot on the phone by pressing up volume +power until Oppo logo appears, release power but keep holding up volume, you should see fastboot on the screen...
Using the ADB files, make sure you open the files until you can see the .exefiles, it helps to have the file you wish to flash in there too, and hold "shift" key down while right clicking on white space in the window. Choose "open command window here".
Connect the Find 7 to the PC & type "Fastboot Devices" in command propmt. You should get a serial number and device found or something, if you don't try a new cable or usb port...
Once the phone has been detected type "fastboot flash recovery "the file name of the recovery.img", to make it easy, the file needs to be in the ADB file and after you type the 1st letter of the file you want to flash, press "tab" it will autofill the filename (just make sure you have different names for the files).
Then you can follow the other instructions with Supersu to get root....
I'm a newbie with this.. I got my Nexus 5x a few weeks ago. With the instruction of someone else i unlocked the boot loader and rooted my phone. then i had an issue with boot looping after some customization on my phone. so i attempted to wipe all that stuff off my phone is TWRP and i accidentally checked system. Now what do i do? Now i don't really know what a rom is or adb side loader or something like that.. i need some simple and clear instructions to get my phone working again. preferably without having to root all over again (that was exhausting and quite difficult, lots of trial and error).. but if it won't be rooted anymore, it's better than nothing. Please help!!

You only removed system you should still be able to get into bootloader.
Turn phone off, hold the volume down button then power button.
Should go to a screen with a android man laying down and it saying fastboot mode in red.

@starlitserenity, I can help you get an OS back onto your phone. It's very simple even though you may be a NOOB. It's OK. As long as you have access to a PC and Internet you are OK because you can still access TWRP. Here is a list of steps:
1) go to forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-5x/development
2) scroll down to the ROM labeled
"Pure Nexus"
3)In the first post (Original Post), scroll down and click on "Downloads & Changelog" You will be redirected to AFH (Android File Host) to download the ROM/OS
4)Scroll down just a little and you will see a Green Box with files/ROMs. Click on the newest one labeled
pure_Nexus_bullhead-6.0.1-20160407.
After you click on the ROM file, a new screen will appear with a Green Box that says "Begin Download".
5) Click on " Begin Download"
Once you click the "Begin Download" box, you will see below another Green Box that says "primary download". Click on the " Primary Download " box to begin downloading your new ROM/OS.
6) Go back to the Pure Nexus original post/first post and click on the link labeled "Highly Suggested Gapps"
You will be redirected to Android File Host again to download your Gapps(GoogleApps). Scroll down just a little to the Green Box again and select
PureNexus_Dynamic_Gapps_6.x.x_4-7-16.zip and click on the link.
7) A new screen will appear with a Green Box that says "Begin Download"
Click on the "Begin Download" box and just below another Green Box will appear that says "primary download".
Click on the " primary download " and this will download you Gapps.
8) Once both of your files have finished downloading onto your PC, boot your 5x into TWRP and connect it to your PC and let the drivers install so your Nexus is recognized by your PC.
9) Now that your 5x is recognized by your PC while booted into TWRP, you will need to move the 2 downloaded files from your PC's download folder to the internal storage of your 5x.
10) Now that you have moved both downloaded files to your Nexus 5x internal storage you will need to reboot your recovery. Select the home button in TWRP, select reboot, then select reboot recovery to reboot TWRP. This will all TWRP to recognize the two new files that were moved to your Nexus internal storage.
11) Unplug your Nexus from your PC. On your device, go to the TWRP home screen and select wipe, then swipe to factory reset. Now you are ready to install your new ROM and Gapps
12) Now that you have wiped the 5z again, select the TWRP home button. Next, select "Install". Navigate to your SD card/internal storage to locate the two files we moved to your Nexus from your PC. Select the file that says
pure_nexus_bullhead-6.0.1-20160407
Once selected you will be directed to a new TWRP screen and you will see a box to click on that says " Add More Zips" Click this box and navigate to the SD card/internal storage and select the 2nd file that says PureNexus_Dynamic_GApps_6.x.x_4-7-16.zip. Once you have selected the file you will be directed to another TWRP screen with a swipe button to install the ROM file and the Gapps file. Swipe the button to begin the installation.
13) Once the installation is complete, you will see a box that says wipe cache/dalvik. Select this box, wipe cache/dalvik, then select reboot system.
14) Once your device boots you will proceed to the setup wizard just like when your Nexus 5x was new out of the box. Go through the setup wizard to setup your device and once completed, reboot, and you will be back to normal with a pretty sweet custom ROM called Pure Nexus.
