I got a notification for an OTA update couple of days ago, I didn't click on yes because I was afraid to lose my root. Anyone know what the update was about? And would I lose my root if I update?

Thats funny because it true!!
Also, be friendly with the development section, a rooted version of the new ota has been available almost as long as Stock.

I guess questions should be banned from this forum, since you can pretty much find anything on Google.
I suppose came straight to experts for answers was a bad idea.
Are troy talking about the 2.2 update from couple of months ago?
This update notification I only got it from about 2 days ago though.

There was a new OTA recently with the FPS unlock, and yes, chances are you will lose root if you download it.
You can download any one of the dozens of custom roms that are built on the new update or flash the rooted version of it

Thanks for your help. I really appreciate that.
Also might be worth mentioning that rumor has it that downloading the OTA's
from Sprint (2 in my case), and then flashing them separately is also possible.
However, there is still the risk of loosing root. But it's fairly trivial to regain it.
This is the method I'm going to attempt within the next couple of days.

I have 2.2 froyo anybody have a clue as to when gingerbread will come to the evo. I mean 2.2 works fine for me I just like to keep things current. That's why i went with Sprint "the now network". Lol but seriously, when @[email protected]

This is stuff you can do without a rooted phone. In fact, it's the de facto way of doing it period, rooted or not. Lol, we're talking about Sprint and HTC's over the air (OTA) update to give us Gingerbread without having to root.
Forgive my dumb question, I've just been on XDA reading posts and learning how to customize my phone for a few weeks now. I'm totally new to the idea of rooting my phone and am still trying to figure out how it all works. What is the difference between the 2.3 Gingerbread version from the previous version on the HTC EVO? Also, where is this "thank you" button?? I haven't seen it yet. It's not to the bottom right of anyones posts that I've read yet. Thanks!
Ok! Nevr mind on the Thank you button. I refreshed and they appeared....... ~)

The difference from the stock EVO froyo and stock EVO gingerbread isn't much. It was a half ass update if you ask me. The only good thing was the developers getting more tools to make more stable roms for us root users. If you do decide to root, I would suggest mikg 1.03. Great Rom and it has sense 2.1 and the cool parts of sense 3.0
EDIT: you also lose the ability to access n signal wifi with the ota gingerbread update, but if you are rooted than you can just flash the modified kernel the awesome devs cooked up.
And the thank you button will show up when you hit 10 posts...
So, Verizon decided they didn't want to deal with me and my lack of mobile web issue, and is sending me an Inc2. It should be here Tuesday. So, being the super sluthe I am, I've been checking out all the posts about rooting, and roms, and themes and apps. Is it really that easy to root this phone? Really??? There's no problems with voodoo and non-voodoo, and flashing the wrong kernel with the wrong cwm???? Seriously????? OMG! I'm going to love this phone! I think I've been able to use my fascinate for about 10 days out of the last 30 because I flashed a voodoo kernel on a non-voodoo rom and bricked my phone. I had to go back to eclair , and now I can't root it again. I can't wait to get this phone!
Peace!

Oh yes. Coming from the charge this phone is a piece of cake to root and flash

Great. This is not only my first rooting, but my first android period. Now I'll be afraid to move to another device, not that I want to right now. Probably never leave htc anyway.

I came from an Incredible which was rooted and running CM7 for about 8 months. Now that I had the Incredible 2 I felt underwhelmed because I couldn't root it. That has all went away since I am rooted.
I dont see how this phone is easier to root? SuperOneClick was pretty straight forward. And the Fascinate was pretty unbrickable. This phone isnt.

Gotta agree here. Just came from the Fassy myself. Was pretty simple as long as you knew what you were doing and followed directions and not flashing voodoo onto non voodoo I felt better knowing it was virtually impossible to brick my device with Odin on standby. I just rooted my inc2 last night and I havent flashed anything yet but I am researching the better and stable roms in the dev section to try and pick one. They all look great so its hard to decide. Lol. Think I want a Sense 3.0 rom though. Anyone have any good suggestions? Preferably one that is bugless and everything functioning correctly.

Yeah. I just got the phone today for my wife and it updated while it was charging before I could root it...which sucks since rooting it played a HUGE role in the decision to get this phone.
I'm guessing I could really break something if I just tried the unrevoked/alpharev/revolutionary approach regardless of the fact that I now have hboot 0.98 huh?

****, I was afraid of that. Now I wonder if I should try to return it and try again...damnit.
Is the update going to try and force itself or will it does it have to be a manual update?
Also, if you are running a custom rom will this still effect people, or just people running stock root?
Unless things are different from my Original Droid then custom roms don't need to worry about it since most of them have OTA updates turned off.

If it is a stock based Rom without OTA removed...then yes it prob will...and you will lose root...you can remove the update service yourself with a root explorer app

For some reason the curious side of me wants to down load. Can't be that big oh a change. Right???
How long for the exploit on 2.3.4 since we already have 2.3.2 done.
Sent from my ADR6350 using xda premium
My crystal ball says it will take 3 months and 9 days to find the next exploit, and 4 months 15 days for the next patch that kills it.
It seems that one of the biggest benefits of custom roms are freedom of forced updates. I guess this is the answer to all the people concerned about getting s-on for the event of a return.
Sent from my Incredible 2 using Tapatalk
Wow, this thing pushes through without user consent? Holy crap am I glad I'm running CM7.
Just a thought - would users who have received the update against their will have the option of flashing the previously released gingerbread RUU? I'm guessing that even if they could, they'd still be stuck with the updated hboot and therefore unable to get s-off. I'm not really sure how all that works though. Anybody smarter than me have any thoughts?

The new OTA is pushed to your phone but it offers the option to accept, postpone or reject.
I am rooted (stock rom) and made the error of accepting. After the update my phone would not boot completely (erred with white triangle, yellow exclamation point, blue android). You can follow Conduitz's fix found in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1233267
NOOB Question
If I want the update and could wait for Root (have root now), how does one go about getting S-ON again? I used the alpharev method.
thanks in advance.
Can I root this as I would older builds such as LBJ & MA6??

I'm unsure overall. And don't worry there's no chance it will already be mb1 lol. If new out of box, it will at a minimum be at LJ7. Ma6 and mb1 have been released in the last week. The phones in box left the factory months ago and haven't been updated since maybe in a few months the new in box phones will have the mb1 update so just get ready as if your LJ7 or a previous version.

Update to mb1 before rooting otherwise you will have to root all over again.
Root will work on mb1.
I used the team epic root process mentioned above.
In my case I was rooted with ma6. Got the ota update with stock recovery. Then had to re-root.

I really do not know. I went to MA6 from whatever was previous on my phone(4.1.1). then I rooted then next morning OTA MB1 and rerooted all in less than 48 hours. So i have really no way of knowing what changes were in between MA6 and MB1. There were some minor changes I noticed after updating to MA6.
Google Settings appeared in the App drawer. I think there were some keyboard modifications where there is a separate heptic feedback switch to turn on or off.
Other than that I think everything else was behind the scenes type stuff and bug fixes.

Just wanna make sure. Regardless of which baseband I'm on, any rom should work, right? Sprint roms of course. It's just that on the Note 2, some baseband versions wouldn't play nice with certain roms (cause errors, etc.). I'm seeing some roms in dev section saying, "based on ma5" or "based on ljc." Does that mean I HAVE to be on that baseband to flash that rom? Sorry for all the noobish questions but when you bounce around devices, you get confused

A brick is NOT in my future. Look I respect the fact that you've been around a while and have helped many out but just because I ask a noobish question doesn't mean I'm a noob. I've owned an OG Evo, a EVO 3d, the EVO 4g LTE, the galaxy nexus, the sg2, the gnote 2, and sg3 and many more I probably can't remember right now. I have been a "flashoholic" for quite a while, flashing roms, radios, mods, etc. I've even helped devs build flashable zips to install mods. I HAVE NEVER BRICKED A DEVICE. Maybe my question wasn't clear but it doesn't matter cuz I already updated my baseband to mb 1 and I've flashed several roms, all without incident. It seems to me that all roms work regardless of what baseband your on (as long as they are for the right device). I respect you and others on this forum and I just didn't appreciate the tone with which this came across.
