[Q] Cyanogen 6.1 Stable or wait for the official 2.3 Gingerbread build? - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I love Cyanogen's work and was waiting patiently for the stable build for my G2, but now with the announcement of 2.3 I am torn whether to wait for Gingerbread (which should hopefully be soon) or to take the dive into Cyanogen's custom rom.
If I do go with the custom rom, that means I will likely have to wait longer for a Cyanogen stable Gingerbread build. Cyanogen does have many sweet features, even on the 2.2 base. I think the only two features I will need to port over before the custom rom is Swype and QuickOffice, everything else should be there right (like WiFi calling)?
What does everyone think? I welcome all feedback!
Thanks!

Dive and flash CM. 2.3 OTA update will take a while, my estimate is around Jan to Feb. Or maybe longer, if T-Mo/HTC is being lazy.

That sounds about right. Hopefully not after February but I wouldn't be surprised.

agreed, besides within a month we will prolly have cm6.2/7 that will be based on 2.3

You'll definitley see a CM 2.3 build before youll see an OTA on the G2 just flash 6.1.

I second that!

Thanks for the feedback!
Appreciate the replies everyone, think I will dive into cyanogen's stable rom this week.
Am I correct that all I will need to backup and then restore is Swype and QuickOffice? From what I read WiFi Calling will be there and goodies like FM Radio, better quick key and led notifications...just want to confirm before I dive in.
Thanks!

Ya you have to restore swype. There's an app somewhere around here that'll do that. I didn't realize that quickoffice was gone. I can still use it by opening a file but I can't go to it from the app drawer. Make sure that you don't delete that first backup. I just labeled mine do not delete.

There is also a file in /system/lib/libSwypecore.so that you need to back up as well. After flashing, you can adb push them back where they came from.

Swyperestore apk is the one that I used, found here:
http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/...over-your-swype-after-installing-cyanogenmod/
Note that you will need a clockwork backup with Swype installed; it basically rips it out of the backup and restores that version onto your new cyanogenmod.

Hell there's no reason NOT to flash. Why wait? If you eant to switch back a nandroid only takes a couplr minutes. There's no risk as you can make it look as if you have never rooted your phone before and not risk any reprocusions from tmobile. As far as I'm concerned, flash everything at least once to see if its your style. Ya dig?

Did it!
Again thanks to everyone for the feedback, I flashed Cyanogen's rom today and it does indeed rock!
That SwypeRestore app did work quite nicely and I found a thread about getting QuickOffice back here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=837599
But I did not back it up before I flashed the new rom, does anyone know how to pull the apk out of a clockwork backup? I suppose I could restore the backup first and pull it out and then restore the new rom first but that seems like quite a long work-around.
Also one small quirk I keep bumping into, since the trash-the-icon is up top, I keep throwing away icons down below, like before, but now that action replaces the app drawer with the application and there does not seem to be a way to restore the app drawer.
Does anyone know of a quick way to restore the app drawer if it is replaced with an app shortcut? I tried to reset/restore the adw.launcher and that did not work, so a factory reset/wipe seems the only way to get that app drawer back in the center dockbar. I've done this accidental action twice now and I dont want to lose all of the customizing work I've done on the new rom anymore.
Thanks again, love XDA!!!

To restore the App drawer:
long press the home screen to create a widget
select custom shortcut/pick your activity/launcher actions/Open close App Drawer
press OK and drag the new icon onto the task bar

If you want to extract an APK from the nandroid backup, use unyaffs on the system.img which is stored on your /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup folder somewhere. I think the timestamps are in GMT 0 time, unless you restored from rom manager, then I think it is in local time.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=4474956
This assumes that you have some familiarity with linux... otherwise restore, extract, re-restore, install. The file will be in /system/app/

[Q] Interesting situation with CM6.1

OK so this is the deal. I flashed CM 6.1 and wanted to check out the Dark Froyo theme to see how it works. Turns out it doesn't, anytime I attempt to add a new account I can't get Gmail in there, Market/Gmail app don't even open at all. So I reflashed a fresh copy of CM6.1 after doing a data wipe/dalvik wipe and still appears like elements from the Dark Froyo are in there i.e. the black and white icons for gmail and market. Still can't get gmail to open or market to open. Any suggestions?
Nobody has any info about this? I haven't been able to find a relevant thread
Try doing a factory wipe from HBOOT.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
CM themes save an xml on the sd in the folder /CMThemes
If you delete that file, I think the theme and its options will be gone.
Dont forget to "apply" another theme in the CM Settings first...
I did the factory wipe from Clockwork, and mounted the SD to my comp to make sure I deleted it and the thing is gone. I moved to a different ROM for the time being, which is unfortunate because I really liked Cyanogen. I'm just giving Ultimate Droid a test drive for now.

I had the same thing happen with the iNexus theme. The only way I could get back to stock CM 6.1 was to an earlier nandroid backup. If you didn't run a backup before installing the theme, you will have to do a new install.

What do you mean new install? I downloaded the CM6.1 zip and put it back on my memory card and the flashed it again if that's what you're referring do. I mentioned that in my OP.
EDIT: I suppose this is all irrelevant now seeing as the speaker appears to be shot. Looks like I have to call in for a replacement.

CM7 Final - Many Force closes from Launcher Pro

Hi, I'm running cm7.0 stable and I used titanium backup to restore my apps+data when I flashed this rom. I am continuing to get force closes quite often. I did uninstall and reinstall launcher pro once to see if that would help and it didn't help. I was running WidgetLocker homescreen and disabled that for a bit and it didn't happen as often. Is there anything I can do to correct this? I had read somewhere when installing a fresh rom to not restore data or possibly even apps? If I flash cm7 again over my current one will all apps and settings stay untouched?
I also just read about cm7.0.2.1, should I download this? I do eventually want to step forward as stable releases come out. Will I have to wipe anything again and if I were to download and install the rom through rom manager would all my apps and settings stay untouched?
I noticed Rom Manager also has an updates feature for premium users, is this the nightly updates and not the stable versions? Or is it the same as the stable versions but just updates it rather than flashing the entire rom? Thanks in advance for any help received here!
I was having this same problem earlier today. When restoring with Titanium Backup, you can't use the batch feature to restore any apps...you're going to have to go to the Backup/Restore tab and restore each app you want individually. For some reason the release can't handle the data (which I suppose makes sense because of all the irrelevant system files). (So don't worry about LauncherPro or WidgetLocker, they're not causing the problem.)
To fix it, you're going to need to reflash the ROM (or recover a backup if you made one before you recovered your apps through TB), and then when you want your apps, what you'll end up doing is going into TB, hitting the Backup/Restore tab, and go through the list of apps >> find one you want to restore and click/touch it >> hit "Restore" >> hit "App only".
Also, I would download 7.0.2.1 -- it's the latest release, and as far as I know, it is extremely stable. If you're unsure about certain releases, ROM Manager does have a comment/rating section with each release, and you can get a good idea as to how stable it is there.
I'm not too sure about the ROM Manager/updating question, though, and would be interested in hearing the answer, as well.
Let us know if you have any more questions!
Each rom is different so if your trying to restore system apps from one rom to another it usually will not work especially if your going from say a sense rom to gingerbread. Uninstall the apps that fc and try just restoring the app minus data.. good luck
As long as your using a rom manager supported rom it knows what rom your using and will give you updates for your rom 7.0.2.1 just fixes camera and is stated stable nand first and if you update w/o wipe and it messes with anything just restore and wipe before update
I have a feeling that its more of a permissions issue. Running Titanium backup and restoring your apps is not a problem at all. run the batch then select restore all apps with data. Once the list of apps comes up make sure the radio button that says "App only" is the one that is selected. If you restore the data that could cause issues.
I forgot to mention I did fix permissions with Root Tools. Anyone know about ROM manager and how it updates. If I go to 7.0.2.1 and there is a 7.3 does it install over the last one? And the update feature for Premium Users only to get access to the nightlys?

Yes it does install over the other one and you can keep all of your existing data without having to restore it. I'd suggest not using ROM manager, but I do believe the nightlies are for premium users in ROM manager.
Thanks for the help guys. I am going to install cm7.0.2.1 very soon and restore only apps without the data. It's a pain because I have so many! But I'll do it right this time. One last question, the google apps zip (gapps-gb-20110307-signed.zip) I used to install after cm7.0 stable, can I use the same one for the new version? Or did something change?

Thanks everyone for the help! I wiped my phone and successfully installed the new version of cm7 yesterday. I manually installed all of my apps again and got it setup and configured once again without any issues or force closes. My phone is running very smooth now!
I get the same thing sometimes on my phone. Launcher pro is force closing because its waiting on the sd card to finish mounting. In gingerbread it takes a hell of a long time for the sd card to mount, just let your phone sit for a min or two and you shouldn't have any problems. Also if you hit wait instead of force close it'll start working right after. No need to reflash the rom or anything else.

[Q] Gingerbread swap

Hi guys,
I am starting to get a lot of force closes on my phone. I have no clue if it is the phone, the apps or the ROM (SLIDE-Reloaded v1 which is the basics of the original just without the junk ).
I was thinking of getting rid of what I have now and installing CyanogenMOD7. Would this be recommended? I have Recovery: Clockworkmod 2.5.0.1
If so, can I get a brief explination of how to go about the swap. I know I have done this in the past but it has been so long I honestly can't remember.
Cheers!!
AB
Its simple, just open rom manager and go to download roms, hit cyanogenmod and download cyanogenmod 7.0.3 w/ the google apps addon (optional), and after it downloads, rom manager should automatically pop up asking if you want to wipe and and backup rom, BACKUP ur rom dude just incase u dnt like CM7 and it saves everything, mssgs and all, just in case. Flash the Rom and ther u go. Other than experimentation with some other roms to support my fellow devs, I hav benn using CM since the 6.1.1 build! I highly recommend it!
-also, it wud be in your best interest to probably flash up to the latest recovery, which is 2.5.0.7 if I'm not mistaken)

Do I need to download the GAAPS? If so, I am unable to from the site provided on the ROM bible thread.
Backup - check =) First thing I did was to back up SMS' and current ROM
EDIT: It just clicked to me, so I do not need t download the ROM to my computer and then transfer to SD? All I do is run ROM manager and choose a ROM from the list?
UHHH 0_o i have no idea what you mean by rom bible to be honest, but when you download CM7 from rom manager, it should be a popup on the screen that says addons, then below it is gapps or google apps, whatever its called, you can choose whether to or whether not to download it, but i strongly recommend it because gapps has the Marketplace in it, CM7's actual rom does not come stock with the android market! so download it!
-and for the second question yes it automatically does that for you!!
WOW that is great! I can't wait!!! I just can't do it right now because Market is giving me a "download unsuccessful" message I am upgrading the ROM manager to the premium.
I followed the troubleshoot steps and no luck.
As far as the rom bible, this is the site i was refering to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=924793

The only thing I cannot figure out is how to get to phone to sync only. I have the HTC Sync program to sync my outlook contacts and calendar and when I plug my phone it used to always sync automatically.
Now I cannot find the feature to choose the option of sync via usb... any ideas?
Solution: Download and install Myphone Explorer on both the phone and computer. once installed on the computer go to File > Settings > Sync and choose from the options on the right VOILA!!
What are the DSP Manager and spare parts for exactly?
Last question, I installed Launcher Pro but I have a feeling this rom comes already with it. is that so (I don't have the icon on the apps list)?
Ok so not exactly last question... how do I get swype?

To get Swype: just sign up for the Swype Beta on their website: http://swypeinc.com/
I believe the 'H' is for HSPA+. The Slide is not technically a HSPA+ phone, but it does get faster speeds from the "4G" HSPA+ towers. (You should see faster speeds when the H is on top vs when there's 3G at the top)
Cramill thanks for answering my questions! =)
I am still in doubt about the LauncherPro not appearing in my apps and when i go to the markewt the option to "open" is greyed. This just happened with another app I just downloaded "advanced clock widget"
On a semi seperate note, where can I download this app (image)? I can't seem to find it on app market (the app avail is what seems to be a fony). I had this same app on my sense rom and love it cuz it has the alarm, world clock, timer, weather, etc options.
THANKS for helping in advance =)

I believe that is the Sense clock applet and you'll only get that on a Sense ROM.
what about these apps being greyed out out and not appearing on the app list?
All to strange... I rarely had do many issues with my previous ROM and since I installed CM7 it seems that there are all sorts of little things here and there popping up... Is this normal?

I can only relate my own experiences, I know there are many using CM7 and love it, but for me I just couldn't accept the limitations and bugs it presented on my phone. I'm using a rooted version of the "official" Froyo 2.2.1 ROM (espresso_signed_040511_005057.zip) which still has HBOOT 0.52 and using DarkTremor's a2sd moving apps and cache to an ext3 partition. This combination gets me loads of free memory for apps, has all the nice Sense UI enhancements, is stable and pretty snappy (I am using a Class 10 sd card).
I have to agree, CM ROMS have their audience. I am not sure why it is but I like sense roms better.
I ended up reinstalling CM7 and that fixed the problem with no sound when receiving text. The problem now as many others (so I have read) is my Wi-fi not connecting.
I am going to leave CM7 for a few more days and see if the love comes around, if not, I am going back to a sense rom =/
Fuzi is the rom you have installed on your phone located in the list of Roms in Rom Manager or did you manually instal?

I had the wifi issue in the very beginning, turns out, it is a rare bug that happens often accidentally, the wifi is not a permenant issue, simply backup once more, and then reflash! Easy as pie! Also, CM does NOT use Launcher Pro. It uses ADW Launcher to give the phone the gingerbread look. Launcher pro incorporates both Sense and Gingerbread and is far more advanced! Other than that like I said for me CM is one of the greatest Roms I have ever laid eyes on. However it is in your best interest to use LauncherPro if you want the freedom of CM w/o havin to flash a 2.2 Rom. I recommend the Plus version of LP as it has the Sense widgets, etc. Good luck and jus to let you know I hav absolutely no probs w/ CM as of my latest installation (CM 7.0.3).

When I saw this, I though, "Your'e crazy!" But I tried it anyway...yeah, I'm crazy too...Amazingly, it actually works!! It's pretty slow (and the camera preview goes wonky just like the stock JB camera app), and video recording is broken on this ROM currently (Pons CM10-Unofficial-11-01). But the 4.2 camera actually works.
I copied the files over manually and fixed permissions (I used X-plore, but Root Explorer or adb would work as well), that way I could back up all the files I was replacing in case things went ugly. I quickly found:
The Problem. There's not enough room on the system partition for this newer (bigger) camera app and for the extra libs it requires. SO it will fail if you just try to flash the .zip. The easiest way to get it to work is to use Titanium Backup to uninstall some stuff. First to go is Gallery (we're replacing that), then I uninstalled Email, Exchange Services, Setup Wizard, Google One Time Init, and Trebuchet (make sure you have another launcher installed before you remove Trebuchet). THen, it was just a matter of copying the new files into place, fixing their permissions, and rebooting. But if you clean up some space on /system, you should be able to install the .zip from recovery and be good to go.

I did exactly what you put and it WORKED!!! you have no idea how excited I am thank you so very much!
Just by way of confirmation, it does work (and is easier) to install the 4.2 camera this way:
1. Install your favorite JB ROM and gapps; boot the phone.
2. Using Titanium, uninstall gallery, and a few other things as mentined in post #2.
3. Boot into recovery again and install the 4.2 camera zip. (the one that's patched to work on non-nexus devices, procured elsewhere)
4. Boot the phone again and enjoy the goodness!
If anybody figures out a way to get anything useful out of photosphere on this phone, let me know.

All good advice, and uninstalling unneeded system apps is prudent with JB Roms. But to short circuit all this - I simply use the Camera360 app, which I find to be much better than the native camera app.

Except this thread is about the 4.2 camera which has Photosphere it in, not the stock app itself.
Well photosphere seems to be pretty much a functional failure on the Dinc, but the new gallery app is pretty cool. It's fast (it took some time to 'settle in'), plus the photo editing features are pretty neat. I'm liking it!

The 4.2 camera being discussed in this thread had been ripped from the Nexus 4 and patched by Android Police (I believe) to work on other phones. I don't have the link handy, but I'm not sure it would do you any good anyway. What are you trying to fix? The camera (except for video recording) works on tiny's CM10, works better than the 4.2 camera actually because the camera preview goes nuts sometimes on the 4.2 camera, and tiny's CM10 uses the legacy (ICS) camera which does not have the preview issues. If you really want the 4.2 camera, an easier way to get it is to flash tiny's CM10.1, but like I said, this will have the preview issues. The only difference between the default CM10.1 camera and the patched 4.2 camera is Photosphere, which does not work on our phones anyway.
If you're looking for a camera 'fix' for CM10, the only thing that needs fixing is the camcorder, and for that you have two options:
1. Low-quality video recording with VideoCam Illusions, free on the Play Store
2. Use a Gingerbread (or older) ROM.
sorry for misunderstanding, I've been looking everywhere to figure out the issues I'm having with this dinc. I can't get the camera working or Netflix running tinys cm10. I don't think it's the Rom but I can't figure out where I've gone wrong. I've been lurking these forums for a while and have been able to troubleshoot the three other devices pretty good with the amazing info on here, but this one is getting the best of me at the moment. bought this dinc reconditioned, it was running 2.3.4 and I followed a tutorial to downgrade to 2.2 and root and get s-off with cwm. I upgraded to the latest cwm recovery and have flashed this rom 3 times trying to make sure it was clean. just keep getting a black screen when I try any camera app until it force closes. when I play a movie on Netflix everything works but the video is a black screen, even the sound plays. I realize this is in the wrong place but I can't post in dev yet, maybe I should start a new thread?

Netflix is broken on this device past gingerbread. I've yet to hear a single user report video on Netflix as working.
Do you remember having a working camera when you first started using it? It could be hardware failure for the camera. Also which gapps file did you flash? If you flashed the wrong one it could cause funkiness. If you didn't flash any, the camera should be working. I know that doesn't make sense but try to answer these questions as best as you can.
I followed the link to the gapps from tinys cm10 thread and downloaded jb 20121011 signed. I'll try without gapps tomorrow to see what that does. I hadn't begun to look into the Netflix issue yet so thank you for saving me the time on that. if that's not the right gapps then I'll try another, I appreciate the help, thank you. thanks for an awesome Rom btw, I have yet to find one this nice for any other device I'm using. Happy New year!

Q: SMS app from MIUI

Hi guys, is there any possible way to get the apk file of the SMS app from MIUI
I love their sms app, but the ROM keeps crashing and reboots and then gets stuck at the bootscreen...so not really usefull because i have to flas the PCIMG again, then root it againnand...yeah, that is pretty annoying :/
So if anyone could manage to extract this apk file it would be great
//EDIT: Found a way myself, but now is the question: why don't i have the same functions on a CM ROM as on the MIUI ROM although it is the same message apk
Could anyone explain it to me? Because i really liked the SMS style of MIUI but these ROMs keep crashing like mentioned above. On what does the style of the message depend, and how can i get the MIUI style on CM?

No one able to explain it to me?

MIUI is based of cm and their .apk may work in similar android versions (never tried myself) but if they changed a lot of framework then you would need to do a lot more then just install the apk
On a side note, if you phone bootloops because of a bad app, you don't have to unroot and reroot, just flash a new rom. wipe may be needed so you may loose data, always nandroid before doing new things for situations like this a nandroid is key

I tried to wipe and flash, but even the CMW crashes after about 10-15 sec. So i had to reroot it anyway
Well, the apk worked to install, but it still looked like the stock message app from CM so in fact there is no difference between those two, so the problem has to lay in the ROM layout.
This is what i don't really get though

Then there are other issues as this should never happpen, I would suggest updating to 4ext recovery (if you don't know how : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=27796375)
You may need to ask someone more familiar with miui as I don't run it that often, I couldn't tell you what exactly to add to get their messaging apk. My assumption is that it is an overall theme applied ontop of cm and you can't take individual apks and move them to different builds expecting them to look and act the same.
Maybe ask one of the developers who have ported/built miui roms?
